Fun in the Sun: Davis Cup, Croatia.

Prologue: Packing and Departure: I had made a decision. We were to take one large suitcase and two carry-ons. Clothes laid out and I started. For years SG and I have packed our own cases but gradually this has fallen to me.Not sure when he decided he was unable to do this but I now have been packing for both of us for the last four holidays. I packed the case, I unpacked the case then packed again. We weighed it and although within the limits it felt heavy. So the second case came out and I started again! Eventually by Wednesday morning I was satisfied!! We were leaving Wednesday afternoon. We left home by taxi for Manchester Airport at noon for our BA flight to Heathrow at 15.30. It was drizzling when we arrived so no surprise there. After check in we went to the Executive lounge and had a quick lunch and then made our way to the gate. Landing at Heathrow we made our way to the shuttle stops and soon we were on our way to the Novotel. We had never stayed there before but it was very nice and we enjoyed a lovely dinner, with two drinks each for about 65. Then to bed as we had an early start in the morning.Thursday morning the shuttle picked us up and soon we were back at the airport. I hadn't booked breakfast at the hotel as we had decided to eat at Heathrow. Soon after we had eaten we met Pat, James, Liz and Susan and made our leisurely way to the gate. We were on our way to Umag to cheer on the DC team and really looking forward to it.

Re: Fun in the Sun: Davis Cup, Croatia.

Thursday 12th September: The journey to Umag begins. 11.10 flight from London Heathrow to Munich. Landed at 14.15 then Munich to Trieste at 15.20 arriving at 16.30. The plane to Trieste was very small with a propellor! I am much happier in a big plane with TV, pillows and a well-stocked drinks trolley. We were given a meal of some sort of meatball on the Lufthansa flight and I had a glass of wine and on the Trieste flight we were served ice cream which was a first for us! Waiting for it to defrost was fun but it was delicious. As the plane was so small I imagined that most of the passengers were going where we were going which turned out to be the case as we boarded the coach which awaited us at Trieste airport. It was a very long journey, travelling through Slovenia and into Croatia but the sun was shining and Pat and I chatted away on the back seat while Supergramps snoozed.I am going to call him Alan from now on as indeed that is his name and I've known him a long time. I have other names for him, some I can't say on here so Alan will suffice for the rest of this blog. Now the drinks reception where we would receive our tickets from Gavin Fletcher was to be held at the Melia Coral hotel from 6-8pm and we all guessed that we would be late arriving there. We got to the Sol Umag, checked in and made a dash to our rooms to freshen up quickly and then get in the mini-bus which was waiting to transport us to the reception. The taxi cost 100 Kuna..it seemed no matter where you went the cost was 100 Kuna. I remember Susan paying. I think that she is a wealthy heiress from Edinburgh but she wants to keep it secret. We were anxious to get there as by now I think it was about 7.30. We knew we'd get the tickets but some of us were worried that they might run out of alcohol.....it had been a very long day.

Drinks Reception No 1: The Melia Coral was the hotel where the team was staying along with LTA people, press and a few from the forum if I remember correctly. I'm sure as I go along I will be helped out, corrected and even contradicted but I welcome input from fellow DC supporters in Umag. We were shown outside where quite a crowd of people were milling around, drinks in hand chatting and socialising. Going straight to the table where Gavin sat I gave our names and then had to explain we were part of the Andy Murray Fan Forum before he found the envelope containing the tickets. He then told me that one person was to collect them all for distribution. I nominated Pat Moren!! I'm not saying she was thrilled to have the honour but she did a great job of allocating seats which we kept for the three days. A young, glamorous woman approached us and asked why we didn't have a drink. Susan and I asked for white wine and Alan requested a beer. She brought us drinks, very small measures in quite large glasses and we thanked her. I'm talking about the wine here, not the beer. I then moved to a table where I introduced myself to a young couple standing there. Kelly had won the trip in a competition and was with her partner Charlie but they were leaving on Sunday. Strange prize for a three day tie but they were happy to be there.Susan and I went for a refill and persuaded the lovely young barman to fill up our glasses!! I'm not really sure we talked to many other people that evening as we had got there so late and we needed to get back for dinner. Forgot to mention that we were given free Davis Cup t-shirts. Alan said he didn't want one but when I reminded him I had promised to get Caro one he went and got his!
