Confirmation Rafa will be no 1 on Monday after Federer's withdrawal from Cincy - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/40926790

Given that it now looks like Andy will play the US Open - does anyone know what would it take for him to win back the number 1 spot or is it impossible?

Rafa didn't do that well last year, and Andy got further, so pretty tough ask.

At Start of US open with last years points erased
    1 Rafa 7465
    2 Roger 7145
    3 Andy 6790
    4 Sascha 4425

so Andy needs not only to gain almost 700 on Rafa but also half that on Roger (who is seeded 3, currently 5 points behing Andy) so it's a real long shot and Andy would need to reach at least semi final to be mathematically possible

Thanks, Roy. You never know, Fed may still be injured and decide not to play and Rafa may be knocked out early - although perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part! My real hope is that Andy is fully recovered and, if he gets a decent draw, he can play himself in.

A table illustrating what Roy posted. Win the title and Andy reclaims #1 regardless what the others do.
