Thread: Christmas Greetings and Happy Holidays!

Re: Christmas Greetings and Happy Holidays!

Aw these memories are lovely. We used to sing Christmas carols to the Christmas tree when we were really young - it was in the "best" living room but Santa always left the pressies in the other living room ... but we had stockings on the end of our beds and I can remember waking up at 3 in the morning and opening all the parcels in the stocking then going back to sleep again!!! When we were older, we used to open 1 present each after midnight on Christmas Eve, usually when we got home from the watchnight service. Minnie was always terrified of Santa when she was little so we do the stocking and pressies downstairs and she's not allowed to come down till we're both up - of course it gets more challenging when it's Mr HFW's turn to work Christmas and it was hard on her when she was younger - patience isn't easy when you're wee! A few years ago, I had a lovely morning to myself while Mr HFW worked and Minnie forgot to wake up ... she finally appeared about 9.30! I had a lot of the meal prepared by then!

Re: Christmas Greetings and Happy Holidays!

My earliest memories of Christmas were during the 50s when rationing was still in force so we didn't have much and Christmas was a very quiet and happy family time. We didn't celebrate New Year. We always had a stocking filled with small items such as books and sweets. Nearly all our presents were books.

I remember one year when I'd asked for a bike creeping down the stairs to our dining room during the night when my parents were asleep and seeing leaning against the wall a shining new bike. I crept back to bed feeling very warm and happy and of course the next morning had to look very surprised and pretend that I hadn't seen it

Thanks everyone for sharing memories of Christmas and James for the great collection of trees.

    everyone &

One Christmas when I was about 8 , I asked for a curious George monkey with a banana .
My mom hid all our presents in a big box in her bedroom , and one day while she was out I went in and removed a big yard stick from the top of the box , opened it and looked inside to see my curious george and his banana looking back at me . I carefully closed the box and figured she would never know that I had peeked.

But of course , she had placed the yard stick strategically on that box , so she knew

We always used to leave stockings on the childrens bed so they had something to open when they woke up. The main presents were opened after breakfast. My son does a similar thing except the main presents are opened before breakfast (kids rule). They also leave a mincepie and a glass of milk for Santa and some reindeer food out on the lawn for the reindeers! Of course it all has to be gone before they get up in the morning. I love a family Christmas, will be a bit different this year but Dave will be here in spirit.

We used to leave a carrot on the hearth for the reindeer when our kids were small. That was our undoing with youngest son - one year he'd taken stock of the fact that the carrot was a strange shape - then he checked in the fridge Xmas day and of course, there it was back in the veggie box. So young Sherlock no longer believed from then on.

I used to have a pillowcase full of presents left by my bed and I often used to wake up in the middle of the night and open them then.
