Algerian rowing controversy could mean they withdraw from the Olympics.
There's a piece in today's Times ('s online) following an incident at the Duisberg World Cup.
A small and barely noticed statement of protest on the water at a sporting event in Germany last weekend may be the start of one of the biggest controversies to hit London 2012. When Nasreddine Baghdadi, a 19-year-old kayaker from Algeria, pulled up his boat in the World Cup canoeing regatta in Duisburg last Friday and refused to race, it was merely a whisper of what may yet follow: that, at the Olympic Games, Algerians may refuse to compete against Israelis.

Such a position is in complete contravention of the Olympic Charter and would almost certainly result in Algeria being thrown out of the Games. Algeria’s Olympic committee has told The Times that it cannot guarantee its athletes competing against Israelis at the Games and that their position will be decided by the national Government.
There are previous examples of Olympic athletes — almost all Iranians — withdrawing from competition when drawn against Israel. However, never has the statement been so bold as to be wrapped up as a national policy. That the Algerians are even considering this will be of grave concern to the IOC.

Britain's pairing of Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking currently going well in the heats of the women's Lightweight Double Sculls - leading the field with the New Zealand team in second.

Edit: the girls won the heat in style, and the New Zeland team suffered from an early sprint, allowing the Danish team to come through in second. So, Great Britain and Denmark go through to the quarter finals, and the current word leaders New Zealand will have to see if they can come through the repechage.

Full schedule of today's rowing can be found on the Rowing page of the London 2012 website.

ROWING (10:20-10:37): Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, women's double sculls heats

On the face of it, Britain's double world champions are as safe a bet for gold as you could find in any sport, but Grainger in particular will be taking nothing for granted.

The 36-year-old Scot has won silver at each of the last three Olympic Games, every time in more heartbreaking fashion. But since teaming up with 29-year-old Watkins in 2010, the pair have remained undefeated.

Great Britain will also be in Heat 2 of the Men's Four at around 10:50

A great result for Kath Grainger & Anna Watkins in the women's double sculls heats this morning, as they broke the Olympic record by almost five seconds to book their place in Friday's final.

The British Men's Four also won their heat and so qualify for the semi-finals on Thursday, and finally the British Men's Eight won their repechage so they also make it through to the semi-finals for that event, which will be on Wednesday.

Hmmm Canada's not looking so hot in rowing and it's one of our best summer sports. Australia looked good this morning.

    Re: Olympics - London 2012 - Rowing/Canoeing

Scotsman David Florence takes the stage in the Canoe Slalom - apparently he grew up on the same street in Edinburgh as Sir Chris Hoy - I'm not sure that will help much though

    CANOE SLALOM (13:30-14:08; 15:06-15:32 ): David Florence, men's single

Florence won silver in this C1 category in Beijing. Now, after finishing fifth in Sunday's heats, he must attempt to qualify as one of the top eight from the semi-finals to make the final later on Tuesday.
This summer, he aims to race in the single canoe and two-man canoe (with Richard Hounslow) in an attempt to become the first British paddler to medal in different disciplines at an Olympic Games.

Florence made history by winning two World Cup gold medals (in the C1 and C2 with Hounslow) in Cardiff recently. No athlete had won two different classes at a World Cup meeting before.

He started to compete in the two-man canoe in 2009 and won world bronze with Hounslow the following year. They were fourth in 2011.
