View Full Version : WTA Pick 'Em (BOTP) - French Open 2012
Hello,
Just to let you know that there will be a WTA predictions comp being run for the French Open.
The first time that BOTP was run was for the French Open in 2009 - so this will be the 4th time for such predictions to take place for matches on la Terre Battue.
Hopefully those of you who have taken part before will take part again - and maybe we could interest a few folk who would like a WTA element to their French Open predictions?
I shall post an entry form onto this thread for download as soon as I can after the main draw has taken place, i.e. one prior to completion/ placement of qualifiers.
There will then be another form on this thread when the qualifiers have been placed.
Closing time for entry is more or less when the first ball is hit in the tournament - which starts on Sunday 27 May - but usually there is some latitude for late entrants if it is shortly after the tourney has started.
If you have any queries about this, then please pm me - or simply post them onto this thread.

Great stuff, definitely up for entering!
Thanks Super8 - will definitely be doing this again!
I believe that you are the defending Champion - so good to see you looking to defend your title!!
Great stuff, definitely up for entering!
Excellent!
There will be an Excel file available for download, which contains the draw.
Filling that in is similar to steven's BOTB - except in this instance, you can save the file somewhere, start your predictions, and finish/ edit them a few times at a later time prior to the start of the tournament, before sending them..
Hope that this makes sense...?

Look forward to it Super8!
Look forward to it Super8!
Yip - should be fun!
Looking at the final BOTP table for this last year, I was surprised to see that you ended up in the BOTP basement - so, hoping that this time you will show more of what you're made of on the red stuff!
Thanks Super8. I'll try and do it.
I believe that you are the defending Champion - so good to see you looking to defend your title!!
Am I really? I'd totally forgotten! Although in the pick'em as well, my best results always seem to come on clay!
Well, as the qualifiers have already been placed, I had better get to work on getting a BOTP form onto this thread!
It should be here within the next few hours..
Ok - here is the BOTP entry form...
It is in exactly the same format as usual.
As ever, if you have any questions, then just give me a shout.
Oh - one thing. If any players withdraw, then I am thinking that at this late stage, we keep the form as it is.
If a player does withdraw and you want to resubmit your entries, then please feel free to do so.
Just post a new entry on the thread - or send it again to ccbotp@hotmail.com
Have sent my entry by email. Hope it's OK.
Have sent my entry by email. Hope it's OK.
Yip - all good.
If anyone chooses to e-mail their predictions, as Linda has, I usually reply to confirm receipt. :)
I can also e-mail the file our to anyone who can't download the file via the above link. Just e-mail me at ccbotp@hotmail.com to ask for the file and I will send it to you.

Yip - all good!
WTA MD news - apparently Silvia Soler-Espinosa has hurt her ankle in practice.
If that is the case, and she has to pull out, then Laura Robson will take her place in the main draw, and therefore would play Annabel Medina Garrigues.
Not confirmed, as yet though.
Entered over at cc forum :)
I was up burning the midnight oil getting mine done. I completed my form and saved it and then went to email Super8 and it wasn't there when I wanted to attach it. So I had to do it all over again.
Thanks for doing this again Super8 :thanks:

Blimey!
BOTP Report: Day 01
The Day 01 BOTP report will have to be a very brief one, as it’s been a busy day with both ATP and WTA pick ‘ems to sort out!
Day 01 Results as follows:
"100%ers"
(6) Samantha Stosur (AUS) d. Elena Baltacha (GBR) 64 60
(10) Angelique Kerber (GER) d. (Q) Zhang Shuai (CHN) 63 64
(13) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) d. (Q) Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino (ESP) 61 61
(20) Lucie Safarova (CZE) d. Anastasiya Yakimova (BLR) 62 60
(21) Sara Errani (ITA) d. Casey Dellacqua (AUS) 46 62 62
(26) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) d. Mirjana Lucic (CRO) 61 63
Mar*a José Mart*nez Sánchez (ESP) d. (Q) Eva Birnerova (CZE) 46 64 86
Venus Williams (USA) d. Paula Ormaechea (ARG) 46 61 63
Not all plain sailing for the top players, though – a few 3-setters, notably Vee’s win and Errani’s win over Dellacqua – also MJMS.
“Majority Vote”
Shahar Peer (ISR) d. Stéphanie Dubois (CAN) 62 62 (76-24)
Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) d. (Q) Heidi El Tabakh (CAN) 75 62 (88-12)
A nice number of Canucks in the draw. Seems that Shahar has stopped the rot in her form with her win over Steph Dubois.
“50:50s – Some of the Flakiest Players on the tour actually win close matches, shocker!”
Mathilde Johansson (FRA) d. Anastasia Rodionova (AUS) 57 76(6) 64 (47-53)
Irina Falconi (USA) d. Edina Gallovits-Hall (ROU) 36 63 61 (41-59)
Both Falconi and Johansson are categorically not known for their battling qualities. They both usually collapse like a house of cards when the going gets remotely tough. So, it was a major surprised to see that they both won today. It seems as if they split the BOTP vote pretty evenly, too.
“The Minority-pick Wildcards Prevail”
(WC) Irena Pavlovic (FRA) d. Chang Kai-Chen (TPE) 64 75 (29-71)
(WC) Melanie Oudin (USA) d. Johanna Larsson (SWE) 63 63 (24-76)
Well done to Melanie Oudin! Here is an interesting article about her, courtesy of the New York Times:

BOTP Day 01: Summary
Well, with just 14 matches played today, it of course is very early days. We have a debutante as an early leader in the form of DaveArneRiise from AM.com, taking a slender leader into day 2. An overall pick rate of 80% is a pretty decent start for all of us.

What's the website link where I can access the table and summary's etc?
There isn't one.. however there are some stats here:
The actual prediction listings seem harder to upload, due to memory restrictions of the forum. I shall have a go..
Nope.. that is far too small!!!
Ok.. here they are, for download:
I recall not being able to post everyone's predictions when we did the Aussie Open BOTP..
They are however available for viewing at the CC website:
http://www.cctennisworld.com/tennis-forum/21-fun-a-games/24658-botp-french-open-2012.html?limit=15&start=30#24891
I guess that zipping them up as above is the best workaround - then people can have a copy of their own..

Hello!
Here are the scores on the doors after day 02 - now updated to include a few late results..
Results/ wee report to follow later in the evening..
BOTP Report: Day 2 - Monday, May 28, 2012
Hello! Welcome to the BOTP report for day 02 of the French Open. 28 round 01 matches played today – plenty to report on!
100% Picks – But some lucky escapes amongst those..
(1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) d. Alberta Brianti (ITA) 67(6) 64 62
(3) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) d. Bojana Jovanovski (SRB) 61 60
(7) Li Na (CHN) d. Sorana Cirstea (ROU) 62 61
(15) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) d. (WC) Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) 62 61
(18) Flavia Pennetta (ITA) d. Hsieh Su-Wei (TPE) 67(3) 64 62
(19) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) d. Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) 16 61 75
(27) Nadia Petrova (RUS) d. Iveta Benesova (CZE) 63 63
(8) Marion Bartoli (FRA) d. (Q) Karolina Pliskova (CZE) 63 63
Well, Vika can count herself one very lucky so-and-so to squeak through against Brianti. A mishit second serve ace on break point when 0-4 down in the second set a turning point? Perhaps..
No top seed has gone out in round 01 of the French Open in the open era. Vika should have been the first, had Brianti not imploded. Mind you, there seems to be a curse of slam champs going on:
Na Li – French Open champ – loses SW19 in round 02
Kvitova – SW19 champ – loses USO in round 01
Stosur – USO Champ – loses Aus Open in round 01
Azarenka – Aus Open Champ – should have lost in French Open in round 01!
Anyway. She’s through – to the sigh of relief of the 94% of BOTPers who had her reaching the final! I guess we would have indeed been all in the same boat.
One unusual ‘100%er was this one:
(LL) Sesil Karatantcheva (KAZ) d. Timea Babos (HUN) 61 60
We all predicted this match – but had predicted that Vera Zvonareva would win it! It would appear that Sesil still did a pretty decent job.
Another 100%er with a different player in the match was this one:
(29) Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) d. (LL) Laura Robson (GBR) 62 61
Laura acquitted herself well in the first set, which was much closer than the scoreline suggested.
The Americans are coming!
Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) d. (12) Sabine Lisicki (GER) 64 63 (0-100)
(Q) Lauren Davis (USA) d. (30) Mona Barthel (GER) 61 61 (0-100)
Christina McHale (USA) d. (Q) Kiki Bertens (NED) 26 64 64 (82-18)
Vania King (USA) d. Galina Voskoboeva (KAZ) 64 62 (71-29)
Sloane Stephens (USA) d. Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) 64 76(6) (12-88)
I seem to recall writing exactly the same headline in a previous BOTP, when the American players seems to be on the rise.
Well, they most definitely are! 5 Americans made round 02 yesterday, and a further 5 made round 02 today. And all of this even before Serena has even played! If she and Jamie Hampton win tomorrow, then it will be the most Americans in round 02 since 1991 (when there were 13).
Well done to lizzim and DaveArneRiise for being the only one to pick Sloane Stevens to beat Ekat Mak.
“Majority Picks”
(24) Petra Cetkovska (CZE) d. Simona Halep (ROU) 61 63 (71-29)
(31) Zheng Jie (CHN) d. Alizé Cornet (FRA) 64 64 (71-29)
Olga Govortsova (BLR) d. Romina Oprandi (SUI) 64 61 (76-24)
(Q) Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) d. Mandy Minella (LUX) 63 64 (82-18)
Chanelle Scheepers (RSA) d. Laura Pous-Tio (ESP) 64 26 61 (94-6)
Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP) d. Tamarine Tanasugarn (THA) 60 63 (94-6)
Petra Martic (CRO) d. Michaella Krajicek (NED) 62 75 (65-35)
Varvara Lepchenko (USA) d. Ksenia Pervak (KAZ) 62 67(6) 64 (47-53)
“Upsets not foreseen by many of us…”
Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) d. (17) Roberta Vinci (ITA) 62 46 63 (6-94)
(Q) Chan Yung-Jan (TPE) d. Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) 61 76(8) (12-88)
Stéphanie Foretz Gacon (FRA) d. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) 63 75 (29-71)
Well done to Liam, who was the only person to predict Ardivdsson’s shoc win over Robbie Vinci. Well done again to Liam and also to nevets, who were the only people to predict qualifier Chan Yung-Jan’s win over Kat Bondarenko.
“BOTP Bagels”
(WC) Claire Feuerstein (FRA) d. Vera Dushevina (RUS) 64 61 (0-100)
Nina Bratchikova (RUS) d. (32) Monica Niculescu (ROU) 06 63 63 (0-100)
Well, none of us foresaw these results! Both real upsets in terms of the clay court pedigree of the players defeated.
BOTP Roundup
A pretty decent day for the BOTP folk, all round. Alli and James both took a bit of a tumble, and Liam a frontrunner thanks to predicting a few upsets!
Otherwise, still pretty close, with just 5 points seprating the top 12. I would imagine that there will be further movements in the table tomorrow..

Ceertainly didsn't have a great day but hopefully the only way is up! It certainly was a scare for Vika and having seen the highlights she was indeed fortunate to survive and wil certainly need to step it up to reach the latter stages.

A lot of us did probably. I think James mentioned it before. Oh well, c'est la vie. Certainly makes the tournament all the more exciting now.
Although it's good to see an underdog win, in the end it's not good for the tournament or the crowd, is it? What if they end up with 4 unknowns in the semis?
RoastLamb
29-05-2012, 19:45
I think that would be awesome!
Well, I wasn't too happy when I went to the semis at Queens and the highest ranked player was Feli (back in the days when he was ranked 30-40). And he lost! You pay in the region of £100 for a semifinal ticket and you hope to see some top players.

JAMES4578
29-05-2012, 19:52
Think they'll likely still have a few top players in the semis, though obviously Serena is a star as indeed is Sharapova even if they're not popular with everyone. I reflected on picking Serena but decided to go with the form, even though she hasn't won the French for some time. Still I never imagined she would go out so early!
BOTP Report: Day 03
Bonsoir! Well, day 03 saw the completion of all of the round 01 matches. 20 matches played today, and therefore 20 points up for grabs!
The Big Guns Roll On (well, mostly)
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. Alexandra Cadantu (ROU) 60 60
(4) Petra Kvitova (CZE) d. (WC) Ashleigh Barty (AUS) 61 62
(9) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) d. Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) 60 61
(14) Francesca Schiavone (ITA) d. Kimiko Date-Krumm (JPN) 63 61
(16) Maria Kirilenko (RUS) d. (WC) Victoria Larrière (FRA) 61 62
(22) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) d. Greta Arn (HUN) 64 64
(23) Kaia Kanepi (EST) d. Alexandra Panova (RUS) 63 63
Really, what much can be said about these matches? The word ‘routine’ seems to be an understatement. Business as usual, then. Sharpie looking particularly ruthless on the red stuff , after defending her Rome title.
”The Landslide Winners”
(28) Peng Shuai (CHN) d. Tamira Paszek (AUT) 64 63 (94-6)
Klara Zakopalova (CZE) d. Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) 62 61 (94-6)
(25) Julia Goerges (GER) d. Lucie Hradecka (CZE) 76(1) 64 (94-6)
Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS) d. Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK) 63 41 ret. (82-18)
Arantxa Rus (NED) d. Jamie Hampton (USA) 64 43 ret. (71-29)
Not quite getting the unanimous BOTP vote – but as near as dammit. Once again, some pretty routine wins. The standout performance here probably Julia Goerges destaching the Madrid semi finalist and French Open doubles champ Lucie Hradecka.
“The Brits in amongst the 50:50 Splits”
Lourdes Dom*nguez Lino (ESP) d. Marina Erakovic (NZL) 75 75 (59-41)
Urszula Radwanska (POL) d. Pauline Parmentier (FRA) 64 63 (53-47)
Melinda Czink (HUN) d. Anne Keothavong (GBR) 61 62 (53-47)
(Q) Heather Watson (GBR) d. Elena Vesnina (RUS) 62 64 (53-47)
Well, the BOTP jury was notably undecided about these matches! Well done to Heather Watson, who showed that her round 1 victory at RG last year was no flash in the pan. Last year she was outhit by Kaia Kanepi. She will have her work cut out again in the next round against Julia Goerges..
Minority Interest – wins against the BOTP grain
Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) d. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) 36 60 63 (35-65)
Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) d. (WC) Aravane Rezai (FRA) 75 57 62 (24-76)
Ayumi Morita (JPN) d. Polona Hercog (SLO) 36 64 63 (24-76)
Well, all of the matches going against the BOTP popular vote were the only 3-setters of the day. Tsveti won the battle of the slam semi finalists, despatching Wicky, and Rezai started brightly. Only to come up short against Begu. Very good win for the young Morita, who despatched the big-hitting Polona Hercog.
BOTP Bagel Alert! Virginie shocks us all
Virginie Razzano (FRA) d. (5) Serena Williams (USA) 46 76(5) 63 (0-100)
This has to be one of the most dramatic first round matches in recent times. As with Azarenka, Serena found herself staring at the abyss of a round 1 exit – but this time, somehow, Razzano got over the line in an epic 25 minute final game.
Thrilled for Razzano, who has had such a terrible last 12-14 months, but also disappointed for Serena, who didn’t play well, but battled so hard.
It is a tough result for the BOTP crowd too. 94% of us had picked her to reach the final, with 75% of us predicting that she would win it!
In fact, in contrast to previous BOTP’s, we have only 3 players predicted to win. Had Vika lost yesterday, we would have lost 2 of our 3 picks for the title. Or put it another way, 94% of folk would have lost their winner in the space of 3 days of the tournament.
However, this does mean that we are all pretty much in the same boat with that pick. Those who picked Serena will just need to hope that Vika doesn’t win her second slam, and that Sharpie doesn’t complete her career slam..
So.. that wraps up round 01. With 2 points per win in tomorrow’s games, certainly scope for the rest of us to gain ground on liam and cazza, the early pacesetters in the BOTP table..
Hello
I am afraid that the BOTP tables and reports will be quite basic and primitive for the next 3-4 days as I am awat from home, and using a pc that is very unfamiliar to me!
I will however restore the tables to how they should look when I get back home
So after day 04 the rather primitive table looks like this

This must definitely be the earliest that both Williams sisters have been knocked out in a slam, surely?
Minority Picks
Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) d. (31) Zheng Jie (CHN) 62 64 (12-59)

Bravo to James for being the only person to pick Mathilde - take a bow, James!!
And the pick of Martic was an inspired one, made only by nevets. Take a bow too!!

Sloane Stephens (USA) d. Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) 61 61 ,0-0

And here's the BOTP table after yesterday's matches (Day 07)
I have a bit of catching up to do, both on the normal WTA BOTP front, as well as ATP.
Oh - I've edited the posts for previous days to show the tables as they should have looked. They are all nice and colourful - and easier to read :)
Again, keeping the daily reports very brief - but results, and a bit of writeup for day 07 as follows:
Most/ All of us got these ones correct
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (28) Peng Shuai (CHN) 62 61 (100-0)
(4) Petra Kvitova (CZE) d. Nina Bratchikova (RUS) 62 46 61 (94-0)
(7) Li Na (CHN) d. Christina McHale (USA) 36 62 61 (82-0)
A Minority Pick - and a handy 3-pointer!
(23) Kaia Kanepi (EST) d. (9) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) 61 67(3) 63 (24-76)
When looking at the predictios, I have noticed that CC and am.com can often have similar picks as each other - mainly because people might talk up specific players in the different forums, perhaps?
Well, this is a good example of this. KK has been talked up a wee bit more at CC and certainly Caro has been talked down a lot more there! All 4 folk to pick KK were CCers, Big Al, DN, nevets and VivaHate. Well done to all 4 of you!!
Lone Minority Pick
Klara Zakopalova (CZE) d. (22) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) 63 75 (6-6)
Well, DaveArneRiise would have picked up a handy 3 points had Annie Pav won this one. However, Klara prevailed - so the sole BOTPer to gain from this was fah51. Well done fah !!
Shooting Blanks - we all Crashed and Burned with these ones!
Arantxa Rus (NED) d. (25) Julia Goerges (GER) 76(5) 26 62 0-0
(Q) Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) d. Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP) 64 75 0-6
Varvara Lepchenko (USA) d. (14) Francesca Schiavone (ITA) 36 63 86 0-65
All that I can say about the Rus/ Goerges match is that it should have been Serena..
Had CSN beat Yaro, then liam valid would have picked up the 3 points..
And most of us backed Fran to win - probbly the rest had picked Lady JaJa to win - but hadn't banked on Varvara beating both of them..
fah remains in the lead, in spite of a stern challenge from nevets and DN - who both topped the table briefly until fah's pick of Klara put her ahead again..
Moving on swiftly.. here is the BOTP table after today's results:
With the draw thinning out considerably, only 4 matches to report on.
Basically, no-one got more than 2 correct, and if they did, they did quite well in BOTP terms. These were the only 2 picks that some BOTP folk got:
(6) Samantha Stosur (AUS) d. Sloane Stephens (USA) 75 64 (76-0)
(10) Angelique Kerber (GER) d. Petra Martic (CRO) 63 75 (41-0)
However, none of us picked either of these!!
(15) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) d. (1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 62 76(4) (0-100)
(21) Sara Errani (ITA) d. (26) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) 60 75 (0-0)
Whilst Vika's defeat at the hands of little Dom wasn't foreseen by any of us, this was actually Dom's 3rd defeat of a current number 1 player in a slam. She's quite a giant killer then!
It was also a good day for the smaller players with Dom and Sara both prevailing.
nevets was one of those who did pick Sam and Angie to win their matches, and so moved up to pole position in the table. cazza and Roastlamb also picked them both, moving up to joint second (with fah) and fourth respectively. Just 4 points separating the top 5 - quite tight!
Oh - I should mention - with Vika's exit, only 1 BOTPer has a predicted winner still in the draw, and that same person is the only one with a finalist still in the draw! So, it is kind of a level playing field - with this one exception..

Whilst a few might be in the same position, not going to plan now that I've lost both my finalists! However with Vika form this week perhaps not too surprising she didn't reach the latter stages and Domi has had some scalps before. However, considering their last few matches still thought Vika might turn it around when she fought back from 2-4 in the 2nd to serve for it, however her confidence was not quite there and Cibulkova rose to the challenge. I seen Domi interviewed on Eurosport and she said was eager to win this match after what happened in Miami, when she failed to capitalise on a 6-1, 5-2 lead. Remains to be seen of course if she can play as well against Stosur in the quarters who will fancy her chances of going far in another slam. At the moment though Sharapova has been the form player, though fair to say she hasn't been tested yet. Svetlana really was disappointing against Erani today with such a poor start where she lost the first 8 games before giving herself a chance leading 5-3, before folding really even if the italian was in form. It seemed a distant memory after her dismantling of Radwanska, where that scoreline was so startling.
Seen some of the Kanepi/Wozi clash which became a nervy affair after Kaia had bulit up such a commanding lead but despite being given a lifeline a few times Caroline just couldn't take advantage and to her credit kaia found a way in the end. Wozi really has some work to do to if she wants to be a real in the majors, has slipped back of late.
Yes, I had read about Dom's match in Miami too. And KK was something like 5-2 up on Caro in the second set before Caro pulled it back to 5-5, then got the tie break. I think that Caro fought off a few match points in the 3rd set too..
I plan to write a wee BOTP report on some of the matches - possibly tomorrow. It will be quite an unusual report (I shall say no more, for now).

I'm so glad my faith in A. Kerber has paid off. I love the pocket rocket so I'm happy she finally beat Aza. And I'm happy Caro is out too. I only wish someone would take Shrieky out.
I'm going to be bottom in this one. I have no players at all left in the top half and only one possible semifinalist in the bottom half.
I'm going to be bottom in this one. I have no players at all left in the top half and only one possible semifinalist in the bottom half.
I don't think many folk have got many picks left at all. It's that Serena's fault - and Vika too ;)
Oh, and Na Li.. and Aga Rad..
Anyway.. here is the BOTP table after day 09:

My pattern of getting off to a good start then falling from grace has continued I see.
WTA BOTP Report: Day 09
Day 09 saw the completion of all 4 round 04 matches in the bottom half of the draw. Here is how they panned out:
”Masha the only 100%er in match that that failed to live up to its promise”
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. Klara Zakopalova (CZE) 64 67(5) 62 (100-0)
I didn’t see the match – but the universal opinion seemed to be that it was a poor match, with Masha just about edging over the line in the end.
This is a real pity because both players had been playing so well up until this match, and really could have provided quite a high-quality encounter. But sadly it was not to be – and those watching who hadn’t tuned into earlier matches may well harp on about the inferior WTA. The bbc website was certainly pretty scathing about the women’s game – although I thought that them referring to Klara as some sort of Barbie Doll was pretty lame.
Anyway – minor rant over. We all picked Sharpie. Moving on.
”Petra wins battle of the youngsters”
(4) Petra Kvitova (CZE) d. Varvara Lepchenko (USA) 62 61 71-0
This could have been a dicey match for Kvitty. Not only had she played a pretty unconvincing, error-strewn match against a determined Nina Bratchikova in the previous round – and dropped a set – but also Varvara’s previous 2 matches had been big wins against none other than Fran Schiavone and Jelena Jankovic.
However, Kvitty won pretty comfortably – a good result for the 71% of BOTPers that had picked her. Maybe Lepchenko had run out of steam? Her Fran/ JJ wins had been very long matches, after all..
BOTP Bakery served – again!
(Q) Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) d. (7) Li Na (CHN) 36 62 60 (0-82)
(23) Kaia Kanepi (EST) d. Arantxa Rus (NED) 61 46 60 (0-0)
Well, what a tournament Yaro Shvedova is having! She is proving to be the woman made of iron in this tournament, having already played a staggering 11 matches so far in this tournament – 7 singles matches (3 quals, 4 MD), 1 Mixed Doubles, and 3 Doubles. It is a good job that one of her doubles matches was a walkover, otherwise it would have been 12..
In singles, the set that she dropped against Na today was the first that she had dropped in the tournament – but certainly ran out a deserved winner against the defending champion.
It was however a bad result for us, as no-one picked Yaro, with 82% of us picking SuperNa.
Of course Yaro is no stranger to maing the latter stage of a slam and confounding us in BOTP. I recall her doing exactly the same at the US Open in 2009 when she also dished out a few BOTP bagels! I believe that her having a new coach, and finally being injury-free have been key factors in her getting back to winning ways on the singles court.
Yaro and Sara Errani are also the only players in the quarter finals of both singles and doubles – whether on the WTA or ATP side.
Well, Kaia Kanepi is certainly a predictor’s nightmare. She seems as capable of going out in round 1 as she is of making the quarter finals! I think that she’s now made the quarter finals or better in 3 of the 4 slams now? Not sure if she’s done the same at the Aus Open..
In fact, her match with Rus was a double bagel. We predicted netiher player to win. Where Pironkova must wish Wimbledon were played all the time, I suspect that Arantxa Rus must wish that RG were played all the time, after her sensational run at RG last year!
Anyway, KK won a see-saw match. Had BOTP had its way, that match would have been Caro v Serena..
BOTP Summary: Day 09
Well, day 09 mirrored day 08, in that no-one picked more than 2 of the 4 matches correctly. So.. if you picked Sharpie and Kvitty, then you did well – which 71% of BOTP folk did.
As both nevets and fah51 did just that, they retained the top 2 places in the table. DN, however, moved up 2 places to 3rd, and Cazza and RoastLamb slipped to 4th and 5th respectively.
So.. not too much change in the BOTP table – and with no Serena, Vika, Aga, Na Li, peoples’ remaining predictions are looking a little thin on the ground. However, there are still some possibilities for some further twists in the tale of this BOTP..
I'm going to be bottom in this one. I have no players at all left in the top half and only one possible semifinalist in the bottom half.
I have noone left in either half
Neither do I now.
I've also only got one woman left in the TFF - Shvedova.
Bonsoir!
Well, for what it's worth, here is the WTA BOTP table after day 10.
I believe that this is a 'first' for any day of a BOTP prior to the final!!
And the results:
(6) Samantha Stosur (AUS) d. (15) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) 64 61 (0-0)
(21) Sara Errani (ITA) d. (10) Angelique Kerber (GER) 63 76(2) (0-12)
Nothing but BOTP Bakery for all of us, then..!!
mojoworking and vivahate were the only folk with points to gain from today's matches. Had Kerber won today, they would have both picked up a very handy 5 points. Errani's first win over a top 10 player, and her first slam semi al put paid to that.
The Stosur match had been a 100% pick for Vika
The Errani match had more of a split:
Aga Rad 64%
Venus 6%
Angie Kerber 12%
Flavia 6%
Bartoli 12%
No points for anyone, then, and therefore no movement in the BOTP table.
Whilst a few of us have lost all of our picks, there are points riding on both of tomorrow's remaining quarter final matches. Maybe there will be some points to add to the BOTP coffers then?!
Bonsoir!
Well, day 11 of the French Open saw the completion of the 2 quarter final matches in the bottom half of the draw. Here are the results and stats:
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (23) Kaia Kanepi (EST) 62 63 (6-0)
(4) Petra Kvitova (CZE) d. (Q) Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) 36 62 64 (29-0)
Only 1 person predicted that Sharpie would reach the semi finals for the second year in a row. tabbles, please take a bow - well done!!
And a positively healthy 29% of BOTPers picked Kvitova to reach the semi finals for the first time. So, a very handy 5 points for those who did!
The BOTP Percentage picks for these matches were as follows:
Kvitova win:
Na Li 65%
Schiavone 6%
Kvitova 29%
Sharapova win:
Serena 94%
Sharpie 6%
So.. it was a good day for tabbles and anyone who picked Kvitova for the semis. This included DN, who moved up a couple of places to displace nevets at the top of the BOTP table. NL/S8, lizzim and mojo also moved up to 4th and 5th equal respectively, and alli up a handy 5 places to 10th equal.
So.. moving on to the semi finals tomorrow - Stosur v Errani, and a rematch of last year's SW19 finalists of Sharpie and Kvitova. With the ATP guys taking a break, they now have a chance to shine in the spotlight - which hopefully will be the case.
BOTP WTA Report: Day 12
Well, day 12 of RG 2012 saw the completion of the 2 women’s semi finals. Results/ stats as follows:
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (4) Petra Kvitova (CZE) 63 63 (6-0)
(21) Sara Errani (ITA) d. (6) Samantha Stosur (AUS) 75 16 63 (0-0)
Well, in stark contrast to the ATP side the pick rate for the finalists was a shocking 3%! The only person to pick either of the finalists was Tabbles. That is quite an unusual feat – well done Tabbles!
And now, here is what could be termed as the ‘what might have been’ section. BOTP picks for the finalists were as follows:
Vika 94%
Aga 6%
Serena 94%
Masha 6%
Ah, we were all so sure that this would be a Vika v Serena matchup, weren’t we. How wrong we all were!! A special mention to DaveArneRiise who was the only person to pick Aga to reach the final.
Whilst not too many folk will probably be that surprised to see Masha in the final – I suspect that many would have predicted her to go further had she not had Serena in her quarter – many are likely to be surprised about the diminuative Errani.
However, her win:loss stats on clay this season make for very impressive reading. They are as follows:
Singles 24-3
Doubles (with Roberta Vinci) 23-0
This includes the French Open doubles title, which she won yesterday!!
In many respects, she is a classic claycourter. The closest ATP analogy could be the equivalent of Ferru. In the way to the final here, she has beaten 3 slam winners, 2 of which have won RG in previous years. Her wins in the singles draw are as follows:
Stosur, Kerber, Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, Oudin, Dellacqua
Not exactly a cakewalk!
Errani also reached the quarter finals in singles and the finals in doubles at the Aus Open. She will now be top 10 in the singles rankings on Monday.
Also, in spite of their clay court pedigree, no Italian had made the final at RG until Fran Schiavone did so in 2010. Now an Italian has made the final for 3 years in a row.
However, Masha will of course be the big favourite for the title – to make that career slam. She also has a good record on clay this year, defending her Rome title. The smart money will be on a straight sets win for her, I would suspect.
BOTP Summary
Well, not much change to write about this time – the only movement in the table has been Tabbles charging further up the table, moving up 6 places to 9th. So – just the one more match to go!

Well you certainly can't say this tournament has been predictable on the women's side! Whilst good to see some upsets ideally you would want some big names in the latter stages. Obviously Sharapova has delivered her side of the bargain and once Serena was out certainly expected her to reach the final, though maybe had an element of doubt in her match with Zakopalova. However, she certainly was impressive in her semi with Kvitova even if the Czech was misfiring somewhat. I think a match up with Stosur would have provided the better contest but Erani certainly has had a great tournament with her gutsy displays and has been having some fun out there!
If Maria is in top form can only see one winner but hopefully sara can at least have a decent day out there.
BOTP Report: Final
Bonjour! So, the final match of the Ladies Singles French Open 2012 has been completed. Results/ Stats as follows:
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (21) Sara Errani (ITA) 63 62 (6-0)
So, a career slam for Masha, and a deserved 4th slam title for her. She won titles in Stuttgart and Rome on the red stuff too this season – so her best clay court season by some distance.
Also, a fabulous 2 weeks for Sara Errani, who helped to make this a more competitive match than the score suggests – particularly in the second set. She started slowly in the first set, and could not catch up after that.
As with the semi finals, only one BOTPer picked up points from this match – and once more, it was Tabbles! Bravo!!!
As for the rest of us, the split was as follows:
Serena 76%
Vika 18%
Masha 6%
In the past, we have picked about 7-8 winners between us. This was a major exception – almost ATP-like in its small number of predicted winners – and I guess that we paid the price for that.
Mind you, with the last 5 slams producing different winners, it does make predicting a WTA slam winner, erm, a challenging proposal!
BOTP: Final Summary
Well, sadly, once again, 94% of us did not add any points to our respective tallies. This has had a big adverse effect on the overall pick rate, which finally sunk to a very below-par 48%.
Our percentage picks by round went like this:
R2 69.2%
R3 62.5%
R4 43.3%
QF 36.0%
SF 8.8%
F 3%
W 6%
It is fair to say that collectively we tailed off!
Anyway. One BOTPer who categorically did not tail off was Tabbles. She was the only BOTPer to predict that Masha would (theoretically) beat Serena in the quarters, then go on to win the title.
This made for a whopping 18-point pick ! As a result Tabbles climbed from last to 3rd in the table in 3rd days – climbs of 1, 6 and 6 places respectively! Well done on securing 3rd spot!
However, in spite of Tabbles late charge, it was not enough to displace DN at the top, who narrowly secured the BOTP title from nevets by one pont. Well done, DN!!
It was pick of Kvitova to make the Semi Finals that nudged him ahead in BOTP – and with the absence of picks of finalists by his nearest rivals, ensured that he secured the title.
At the other end of the table. poor [b]tlim dropped into the BOTP basement by default as a result of tabbles' late charge up the table. He did however have good company in DAR and Linda, who all started off pretty well in the earlier rounds, but tailed off somewhat in the middle rounds. Nearly all of us were very much in the same boat for the latter rounds!!
Well, that concludes the French Open BOTP for 2012. I hope that you enjoyed it, even if the way that the tournament panned out was certainly one of the strangest in recent memory. Hopefully we will do one for SW19 – so hope to see you then.
Thanks very much for running this, Super8! I see that it's all CC people at the top of the table - well done to them, they obviously know a lot more about WTA tennis than we do!
Thanks very much for running this, Super8! I see that it's all CC people at the top of the table - well done to them, they obviously know a lot more about WTA tennis than we do!
Perhaps.. although a few of the recent BOTPs have been won by am.com folk, so maybe CC folk had a better tournament on clay than the hardcourts. Maybe they're just a bunch of dirtballers (I'm sure they'd be thrilled to read this observation..!)
Apart from nevets, it would appear that, at the moment, the top of the BOTP table for the ATP side is full of am.com folk - so clearly the converse is true in terms of ATP tennis!
Well, I've generally found that I do much better in comps for the clay tournies - but I certainly didn't in this one!

Thanks for running it and doing all the fab reports Super8! Well done to the cc posters, pity none of us were in the running really.
Thanks Super8 - mine was a bit of a mess this time but still entertaining!
A bit late onto this one.. thanks lizzim, james, cazza and RL!
There will be a BOTP for Wimby.. thread to be set up this evening, I think..
Thanks Super8 for running this! And as for me - 'Must Do Better'!
Thanks Super8 for running this! And as for me - 'Must Do Better'!
Thanks Linda - my mistake - I put the final reports for Wimbledon onto the French Open BOTP thread - oops! I've deleted my mispostings, and put them where they should have gone in the first place..
I guess that this is what happens when there are 2 slams so close together (and perhaps the fact that I am still quite tired from the weekend away..!)
I didn't even notice that it was the wrong thread - I must be tired too . . .
