View Full Version : Just-for-fun pick'em for RG 2012

Linda

As I'd got my selections all ready for the pickem, and I expect several others of you have too, I thought it might be an idea if we just post our selections in this thread and see how we do, each keeping track of our own scores. You can post your selections any way you want, either listing them in the thread or attaching a spreadsheet or whatever. As it's so near the deadline (10am tomorrow) it doesn't seem fair to count it for CoC as some potential entrants won't see it, so it'll be just for fun.

Scores are 1 point for 1st round, 2 points for 2nd round, 3 points for 3rd round etc. until 7 points for final.

Off to type up my selections . . .

nice idea

I found that the quickest way to type up my predictions was to cannibalise Super8's WTA spreadsheet. Though then I didn't know how to attach it here (I tried converting it to a PDF but it was about 3 times the size of file allowed). So here's a link instead. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd287/Granny_Linda/Rankings/RG2012predictions.jpg (although you need to zoom to read it)

NB I've just seen that the RG site have a daily predictions comp here (http://www.facebook.com/RolandGarros/app_266251333470923) - you just have to predict a selected few of both men's and women's matches each day. I think they did this last year but I only remembered to do it on one or two days.

Think I'll just type mine out as I do for emailing to Super8 for BOTP.

So - for anyone who wants to do that all you need is as follows:-
Copy the full draw from the main thread (just adding qualifiers) or from below in this post.

List the 64 winners from R1, then 32 from R2, 16 from R3, 8 from R4, 4 from Qtrs, 2 from Semis (i.e. your 2 Finalists) and then your Winner.
Sounds a lot but copying/pasting/deleting is easy!

Here's the Full Draw - give me a couple of minutes and I'll add the Qualifiers names!

Yip - the BOTP file should lend itself quite well.

Linda - have you zipped up the file before trying to attach it to this thread?

In fact, had I kNown sooner that Steven was going to be unable to do his pick 'em, perhaps we could have done an ATP version too!

BOTP did actually start as a result of Steven not doing a pick 'em for the Olympics in 2008 - when it was done for both ATP and WTA.

In fact...

Just decided - will definitely run an Olympics pick 'em - for both WTA and ATP. :)

Doubles might be a step too far.. but who knows?

Thanks Super8 - I didn't have WinZip installed on my computer so I've just installed it. The file should attach now:

Ok..

Here's a quickly-cobbled together BOTP Predictions form for ATP!

You can either use it to put together your predictions and copy/ paste them onto this thread..

Or...

I could try to keep a wee tally, and thrown them into an ATP BOTP model.

Let me know what you think.

Would be just tables only.. but might be easier than you all having to keep scores.

There's also a thread on CC for this now - with the same file available for download.

It's last minute - so there might be no involvement. See how it goes.

I've just attached one too!!

Well, at least folk have options..

Except that mine won't work for scoring as I took out the first column and typed my picks into the second - rather than also type in all the players I wasn't picking - I didn't think :shamed:

By the way, there was something really spooky about when I then went down changing the 'W's for the next round - 'cos I was typing over the one I'd done for the WTA - I only had to change one W - all the rest of my selections were the same! The one I had to change was Federer - if I'd left all the same Ws as my WTA sheet, I'd have had Fed losing to Nalbandian. Maybe I shouldn't have changed it - what do you think? An omen?

Hey, Manaus - that's the first time that I've seen a post where someone copied and pasted entries AND uploaded their file.!

Now - I can use that to put into a BOTP model..

And lizzim is a dab hand, having taken part in many BOTPs, now..

Linda - we can cannibalise your entries, if you like. If you e-mail it over, then I can give it a wee tweak..

No problem!

It's a nice wee dress rehearsal for doing both ATP and WTA, for the Olympics..

This is still open for late entrants, btw - esp as very few of the ATP matches are first up today..

Hmm. What to do with that entry for the earlier rounds?

I'll pull all the entries together this evening, along with the WTA - then see how things stack up.

Yes, you have to work backwards from the final to work out who beat the losers.

Please let me know if anyone is missing..

I haven't had time to do eblunt's entry, simply because it would involve too much figuring out of earlier rounds - and it's already been a bit of an exercise to stitch together ones that were manually put together! Not just names of players, but a few other statistical 'anomalies' that invariably arise when doing this manually..

Hello again!

It looks as if there were 14 men's matches on day 01.

The way that I will do this is to post a table - and then follow it with the results for the day, with a wee bit of stats with those results..

So.. here is the table after day 01:

super8
27-05-2012, 20:58
And here are the results/ stats:

Sunday, 27 May, 2012

Singles - First Round

100%ers (you all picked these correctly)

[5] J Tsonga (FRA) d A Kuznetsov (RUS) 16 63 62 64
[9] J del Potro (ARG) d A Montanes (ESP) 62 67(5) 62 61
[14] F Verdasco (ESP) d S Darcis (BEL) 63 62 76(4)
[18] S Wawrinka (SUI) d F Cipolla (ITA) 63 63 46 63 62
[21] M Cilic (CRO) d D Munoz-De La Nava (ESP) 64 64 75
J Ferrero (ESP) d J Dasnieres De Veigy (FRA) 61 64 63

The Rest.. (stats in brackets after each match)

P Andujar (ESP) d V Hanescu (ROU) 61 26 16 63 61 (94-6)
F Fognini (ITA) d A Mannarino (FRA) 60 75 61 (76-24)
E Roger-Vasselin (FRA) d V Pospisil (CAN) 36 63 62 62 (82-18)
G Muller (LUX) d I Sijsling (NED) 26 75 36 64 86 (82-18)
C Stebe (GER) d J Souza (BRA) 63 20 ret. (76-24)
N Devilder (FRA) d F Krajinovic (SRB) 62 62 60 (82-18)

N Mahut (FRA) 63 63 46 62 d [26] A Roddick (USA) (24-76)

M Berrer (GER) d [30] J Melzer (AUT) 67(5) 46 62 62 63 (0-100)

So.. everyone got caught out by the Melzer defeat. And well done to those who predicted Nick Mahut's heroics! That would be Sally, VH, nevets and liam, then..

Linda

Just looking at the revised format you did of my entry - and it's considerably different from my original. Look at post #3 in the thread also post #7 - I have Hewitt, not Kavcic, and Muller, not Susling, and so on.

Actually I can see how it happened. I used the spreadsheet that already had my women's picks on it. I hid columns 1 & 2 and typed my R1 selections in column 3. You then typed all the players in column 1 but didn't change the W's in column 2 to to give the right selections in column 3 - they are still in the same places as they were for the WTA selections.

Hi Linda - can you please e-mail the correct one? I will amend your picks..

I must ask people to have a wee check of their picks, because whilst I have tried to keep things as accurate as I could, because of the differing formats, there is the scope for these things to go a bit awry..

Hi Super8 - I did email it to you originally. The one I emailed to you is identical to the ones I posted in post #3 and post #7.

My fault for being too lazy to fill all the names in Column 1. Though of course at that time I didn't know that you were very kindly going to volunteer to collate the results.

Well, was short-lived - one result should have been changed.. table updated - and all now 100% correct..

But still, very tight at the top.

Too bad for Sally, though a few of us are bunched close together! Certainly a few upsets I didn't predict though such as defeats for Nalby, Steppy and Lleyton.

Hello

Now normally the BOTP table would be very straightforward to produce

BUT

I am away from home
I am using a hotel pc where the letters are all ordered differently and I am struggling to figure anything out! Many of the commands are in a different language too

I thought that I could figure things out with this pc - but not so! It does not help that I am more used to a mac computer

I will therefore have to imrovise until I get home - which will be the weekend,

ok - rather primitive looking table for day 4 as follows

p.s. if any of you know how to create a pdf file from excel on any pc then that would be a help. I have tried online any could not find much to shed light on this...

Thanks cazza - confirms what I kind of read. Given that it is a hotel common room pc, an old one at that, and a few language barriers to boot, I may have to wait until I return to my trusty mac, I think...

Ok.. another quick summary..

"100%ers"

[2] R Nadal (ESP) d [Q] E Schwank (ARG) 61 63 64
[6] D Ferrer (ESP) d [27] M Youzhny (RUS) 60 62 62
[12] N Almagro (ESP) d L Mayer (ARG) 64 61 62

"Lone Dissenters"

[4] A Murray (GBR) d S Giraldo (COL) 63 64 64 (94-0)
[8] J Tipsarevic (SRB) d [29] J Benneteau (FRA) 63 75 64 (94-6)

The only BOTPer not to pick Andy Murray, was surprisingly an aam.com member, WimbledonAce! Perhaps trying to put the reverse-mockers on him - or something like that..

And the lone dissenter against Tipsy was xenon, who opted for Julien Bennetau to win this one..

"A Split Pack"

[13] J Monaco (ARG) d [19] M Raonic (CAN) 67(5) 63 67(5) 63 64 (53-47)

Well, this match pretty much divided the BOTP crowd - and given that the match went to a rather epic 5 sets, it showed exactly why this was the case!

"Majority Verdict

[17] R Gasquet (FRA) d [Q] T Haas (GER) 67(3) 63 60 60 59-0

Well, Gasquet certainly has cult status in Steven's pick 'em. Often it is a case of picking him at your peril! However, he is bringing handy points to those who picked him this time.

I wonder how many folk picked him to win his next match though ;)

Maverick Lone Picker!

[20] M Granollers (ESP) d [WC] P Mathieu (FRA) 64 64 16 46 61 (6-0 )

Who was the only BOTPer to pick Granollers' win over PHM? SallyDaisy, take a bow! Bravo!!!

Most of us has picked Isner to win this one..

Quick Overall Review

It is really tight in this pick 'em!! Just 5 points separate the top 7, and 8 points between the top 12!! It was a good day for James4578, who moved to the top of the table, having correctly picked 6 of the 8 winners today. nevets and DAR are just 1 point behind him though, and Linda just one point behind them.

At the top, at least for now!

Well, you remain top after today's matches, as only 2 of the 4 matches were completed - and I guess that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine how many folk picked Roger and Novak to win their games..

The table after day 8 is, well, kind of similar to the table after day 7. This ATP malarky, so predictable.. ;)

super8

100% picks

[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d [22] A Seppi (ITA) 46 67(5) 63 75 63
[3] R Federer (SUI) d [LL] D Goffin (BEL) 57 75 62 64

Games carried over until tomorrow..

[5] J Tsonga (FRA) leads [18] S Wawrinka (SUI) 64 76(6) 36 36 42 - play suspended due to darkness
[9] J del Potro (ARG) leads [7] T Berdych (CZE) 76(6) 16 63 - play suspended due to darkness

So today, 8 points were up for grabs - and everyone got 8 points!

Even though Nole was staring at the abyss at 2 sets to 0 behind, there was this feeling that he might still win it in the end, and outlast his opponent..

I've got 7! Unlike on the WTA version where I've only got 3

It's weird.. there is currently a possibility that both the ATP and WTA pick 'ems will be decided before the semi finals in either have even started!!

And the reasons for this are at each end of the scale, i.e. the ATP one is in danger of being uber-predictable - and the WTA one, uber-unpredictable.

But we shall see.

ATP BOTP Report: Day 09

“The actual Day 09 Matches: 3 Spaniards and a Brit”

[2] R Nadal (ESP) d [13] J Monaco (ARG) 62 60 60 (100-0)
[6] D Ferrer (ESP) d [20] M Granollers (ESP) 63 62 60 (100-0)
[12] N Almagro (ESP) d [8] J Tipsarevic (SRB) 64 64 64 (65-35)
[4] A Murray (GBR) d [17] R Gasquet (FRA) 16 64 61 62 (76-12)

Well, unsurprisingly, everyone backed Rafa to steamroller even a top 20 player in the form of Pico. Really – what is to be said about winning 17 games in a row? Pico was actually leading 2-1 in the first set..!

Ferru also in tip-top form, picked by all and sundry.

I am thinking that Almagro is may near the top of the list re: clay court wins, this season? So, on form, not too much of a surprise to see him in the last 8 too. It is however a little surprising that 35% of BOTP folk picked Tipsy to pull off a shock win.

A healthy 76% of folk predicted that Andy Murray would win - and a good win it was, too.. Richie firstly had his mojo, lost it - then Andy had found his - and the one-way traffic changed direction..

“Epic Matches carried over from day 08”

[5] J Tsonga (FRA) d [18] S Wawrinka (SUI) 64 76(6) 36 36 64 (76-12)
[9] J del Potro (ARG) d [7] T Berdych (CZE) 76(6) 16 63 75 (47-53)

Just looking at the result, it might appear that Jo had simply retained his break of serve carried forward from last night – but no, Stan had broken back to level proceedings, only for Jo to break his serve again.

It was an excellent result for 76% of BOTP folk – and an even better result for JWT, who became the first Frenchman in the Open Era to reach the quarter final stages of all 4 slams.

Now, JMDP v Berdy was a real swing match, splitting the BOTP folk right down the middle! I had actually been at their recent match in Madrid where Berdy won. But Potty had recent been getting the better of Berdy, and resumed the pattern here.

”BOTP Summary: Day 09”

Well, what can be said about the pick rate of the BOTP crowd for the round 4 matches? The average number of players that each BOTPer has got left in the draw is a staggering 6.64 out of a possible 8!

Out of 17 folk, 5 people have successfully predicted all 8 quarter-finalists. Well done to nevets, cazza, Manaus, -J- and SallyDaisy!!

In fact, apart from liam, everyone has picked 6 or more players out of the 8 quarter finalists. Please, all of you, do take a collective bow!!

As a result of these "maximum" picks, Sally bounded up the table, up 6 places to 7th. -J- also went up an impressive 8 places to 4th, and Manaus up 5 places to 3rd. However, because nevets also picked all 8 correctly, he was able to hold off a determined challenge from cazza.

A special mention to nevets, who is now top of both the ATP and WTA BOTP tables – bravo!!! Cazza also seems to be doing well in both, being 2nd in ATP and 4th in WTA..

So.. we are 9 days into a 15 day slam. 120 matches have been completed, with 7 more to go. How will they impact the BOTP outcome, I wonder?

I've got all 8 players correct just cos there isn't a proper pickem

Ditto, I always crumble under pressure during the pick em lol.

Hello!

Here is the ATP BOTP table after day 10

Not sure if I will have enough time to write a report about the 2 matches played today - here they are with stats:

[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d [5] J Tsonga (FRA) 61 57 57 76(6) 61 - Saved 4 M.P. (100-0)
[3] R Federer (SUI) d [9] J Del Potro (ARG) 36 67(4) 62 60 63 (94-6)

Everyone picked both semi finalists correctly, with the one exception of SallyDaisy who had picked DelPo to make the semi final.

The only movement in the table is therefore a wee tumble by Sally, with a few folk moving up a place in the table as a result.

The pick rate is quite a contrast to the WTA BOTP results for today, by the way..!

Well, day 11 saw the 2 quarter final matches of the bottom half of the draw being played.

Here are the results and table.

[2] R Nadal (ESP) d [12] N Almagro (ESP) 76(4) 62 63 (100-0)
[6] D Ferrer (ESP) d [4] A Murray (GBR) 64 67(3) 63 62 (71-29)

Once again, everyone picked Rafa to win. He's managed to avoid the dangerous big hitters who all seemed to be placed in the top half of the draw. Which is handy for him. Not that it would have made too much difference, I would think, but it might have mixed things up a little.

Well, the Ferru v Murray match had 29% of BOTPers backing Andy - of which 100% of those were from am.com! It is fair to say that Ferru was the favourite to win, and duly did so, to reach his first RG semi final.

So, no change with the top 4 of nevets, cazza, Manaus and James4578, who all scored the maximum 20 points - indeed, 71% of BOTPers in total picked all 4. Those who slipped down the table had picked Andy to win his quarter final match.

So.. we have the semi finals that most people expected - but not everyone with players still in the draw has picked the same players to make the final. We shall just have to see how things pan out on Friday - and how that might impact the BOTP table..

I hadn't realised RG had one.

Although they call it a bracket, it's not the same. You have to visit their Facebook account every day and predict a number of matches that they have chosen (both men's and women's matches). So more like an FTM really.

I did mention it on the TFF thread at the start of the tournament.

Ah - that one. I think I saw that but didn't get round to doing it.

BOTP ATP Report: Day 13

Well, day 13 of RG 2012 saw the completion of the 2 men’s semi finals. Results/ stats as follows:

[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d [3] R Federer (SUI) 64 75 63 (76-18)
[2] R Nadal (ESP) d [6] D Ferrer (ESP) 62 62 61 (94-0)

Well, a whopping 85% of BOTP folk predicted both finalists! I guess that this might officially make the finalists relatively ‘predictable’ – but given Nole’s tight scrapes against Seppi and JWT, this was of course pretty close to not happening.

Anyway, those who had predicted anything other than Nole or Rafa took a wee bit of a tumble. Poor Sally is the only BOTPer without a player left in the draw – which in predictions terms is an exact mirror image of the WTA side of BOTP!! As a result, Sally has taken up residence in the BOTP basement. Mojo, Alli and GenBrit have all taken a bit of a tumble too – they all predicted a Fedal final.

At the top of the table, once again it’s a case of ‘Plus ca change’. The top 9 remain exactly the same. 1 game to go. The BOTP table can still change – but if it does, then in what respects?

BOTP ATP – Final

Hello, once again!

Well, days 15 and 16 saw the final match of the ATP singles tournament being played out. Results and stats read thus:

[2] R Nadal (ESP) d [1] N Djokovic (SRB) 64 63 26 75 (carried over from Sunday) (88-0)

Well, I honestly cannot remember any WTA BOTP having such a high successful percentage pick for the winner – a whopping 88%!! Well done everyone!

There were only 2 dissenters: Alli who picked a Federer win over Nadal – and SallyDaisy, who picked an Andy Murray win over Del Potro.

Once again, given the near-unanimous picking, not much movement in the final table to report. Alli took a little tumble down 2 places to 15th equal with Liam, who moved up a place thanks to his Rafa pick. WimbledonAce and Genbrit moved up 1 place each to 14th and 15th thanks to Alli’s tumble – and SallyDaisy consolidated her residency in the BOTP basement.

Otherwise, there was no change at all in the top 12. Hardly a cliff-hanger of an ending to the BOTP – I guess everyone thought that the outcome would be pretty predictable, and were proven correct!

In fact, the top 3 have now been exactly the same for all of the second week of the BOTP. The fact that they were the only folk to successfully pick all of the last 4 rounds – the last 15 matches, right through to the winner – might have something to do with it!!

So, big congratulations to nevets, deserved winner of the French Open ATP BOTP. Well done also to cazza in second place, and manaus in 3rd place. Had cazza and manaus had similar pick rates in other BOTPs, I suspect that they would have won the competition – but the standard was pretty high for this one. An example of this was that 75% of BOTP folk picked all of the semi finalists, the finalists and the winner.

Everyone undoubtedly did well, with an average pick rate of 75%, which is incredibly high. It is also a bit of a contrast with the pick rate of 48% for the WTA pick ‘em! nevets very nearly made it a double win, finishing a narrow second in the WTA BOTP to DN by the solitary point. nevets had a pick rate of 80.6% for ATP and 51.4% for WTA. The 2 tournaments have been at the opposite end of the scale in terms of predictability!

Well, that concludes a slightly lastminute.com ATP version of BOTP. I hope that you enjoyed it. I suspect that Steven might return with rather larger pick ‘em for Wimbledon. I hope that you enjoyed this one.
