View Full Version : ROLAND GARROS, QTR-FINAL: Andy falls to Ferrer who wins 6'4, 6'7, 6'3, 6'2

Andy has made it through to the Quarter Final at Roland Garros 2012; bit of a stuttery start but once he got going it was curtains for Richard Gasquet.
Now the tough part really begins; just 3 matches to the title ... 2 Spaniards and probably Nole or Fedex if he gets that far.
Next up though is David Ferrer.
Andy leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=F401) 5-4 ..... but NOT on clay courts where Daveeeed has beaten Andy 3-0.
This is going to be really tough for Andy; he's probably still nursing a bit of a sore back and if he starts slow he'll be toast. Ferrer is really in form right now and is a beast on clay; Andy needs to avoid too many long rallies that's for sure!!!!! But it's a good match up for Andy; he serves better and he perhaps has a broader game than David which is borne out by beating the Spaniard 5 times. ;
It'll be played on Wednesday - time to be confirmed.
:roland:
quite simple. win this one and its a succesfull tournement IMO
quite simple. win this one and its a succesfull tournement IMO
Most definitely. If Andy makes it to the semis, given the problems he's had, it will have been a very successful tournament. He'll certainly go into it with nothing to lose.
Hope they put it on PC court as its a faster court. Tomorrow they are putting one quarter final on PC and the other on SL.

Its going to be well heck of a match whatever happens
Andy has never beaten Ferru on clay - I shall be, frankly, astonished if he does it this time when Ferru is playing so well and Andy has a niggling back problem. Of course if he manages it I shall be delighted.

Jim Courier said its likely Ferrer will win, however Murray is a better closer of matches and if he keeps it close he could win
DaveArneRiise
04-06-2012, 21:00
If Murray peppers his forehand the way he has done in his previous matches he could trouble Ferrer. He is capable of winning a set or two, you just never know wouldn't surprise me if Andy wins this. I think Ferrer if he plays well will triumph but after the course of the events of this tournament thus far anything can happen!
RoastLamb
04-06-2012, 21:02
Ferru just likes to bash away at the baseline. If Andy can drop and lob like he did today he may get under Ferru's skin. But Ferru is a wee bit faster than Gasquet.
If you think that Ferru just bashes away at the baseline then you are seriously underestimating him.
RoastLamb
04-06-2012, 22:04
Well he's not as bad as Potty or Berdbrain but it's kinda boring watching him. (imo.) The dude's a grinder. Andy has way more game than he'll ever have.

04-06-2012, 22:17
True, although less so on clay perhaps...
I do love Ferrer though - I think "grinder" is actually a bit of a compliment ;) He just never ever gives up a ball and I love watching him play....

04-06-2012, 22:21
I respect him but I don't love him. He is cute, though. :rolling: I kinda feel the same way about Simon. I'd much prefer to watch Tsonga than him.
Ferrer is a grinder and a terrier - he never lets go. I think Andy needs to bring variety to this match - running Daveeed ragged won't work. His legs know no bounds. So far Ferrer hasn't been troubled but then he hasn't exactly had to face much opposition, so hasn't really been tested in quality or quantity of match. I'm keeping everything crossed for Andy. If he's ever to be #1 he needs to be able to beat the likes of Ferrer.

Andy definitely goes into this match as the underdog - so he has nothing to lose.
He could ..maybe...perhaps...with a bit of luck...possibly...just do it
I think we need the French crowd to be supporting Ferrer. Andy seemed to feed off the negative vibes from the crowd yesterday - he said he loved it!

I think courier gave a balanced assessment of the likely outcome of the match. Ferrer is always underestimated mainly as he lives in the shadow of Rafa most of the time. His work ethic and determination is second to none. Make no mistake even if andy goes 2 sets ahead it will still likely go to 5. Without being negative I feel an all spanish semi will be here come Friday unless Ferrer suffers a sudden lack of form. Has still been a successful tournament for Andy no doubt but David is the better player on clay.

home tomorrow , perfect timing for me :nailbiter:
I think french TV will show Rafa's match, so I've to go on the channel's official website, again...
Will Andy be booed tomorrow?!
I think 75% of people are going for David except me, now have they played a slam on clay before? or has it just been the 250, 500 or 1000. If so it's only 3sets and tie-breaks in the 3rd, this is going to be a 5 setter and no tiebreaks in the 5th. andy is just as fit as David so fingers crossed and positive thinking on this site. we have to go for Andy. Right.

Ferrer has a 3-0 record against Andy on clay. Don't think they've met at RG before though? Still though Andy is very much the underdog here so pressure is off IMO and that could be to his advantage. Everybody will be expecting Ferrer to win so the pressure is on the Spaniard.

Johnny Mac thinks Andy's got a decent chance of winning but thinks Ferru has the best chance of all the players outside the top 4 of getting to the semis.
As there are only two players outside the top 4 still in, he's hardly going out on a limb there.

I just hope he won't touch his back tomorrow, or do it only when he leads, because you know what... =S People will be against him as always.
It's clearly obvious he was injuried against Nieminen, he called 3 times the physical therapist, but many people said he acted, whereas many players also was injuried or called physical therapist several times, and they say nothing about them. Andy didn't need to act to win Nieminen, he has always defeated him! BUT the difference is many people HATE Andy too much to be fair with him! He deserves some recognitions, he's not word n°4 for 4/5 years for no reason, and he didn't reach n°2 by chance ;)

IMHO you have also here explained the difference between clay courts and hard courts!!!!
Very interesting that both QFs today went to five sets (though Andy last took a set off Daveed on clay in ...... 2006! The other two matches were won in straight (i.e. two) sets by Daveed).
Will very likely miss this tommorow. Really want to watch this but I'm not free until late afternoon so maybe I'll catch the end of it. Really hope Andy plays well from the start and no giving away the 1st set. Sending positive vibes.

Gosh it's going to be tough, didn't realise Ferrer returned that close to the baseline.
Not sure i'm going to be able to see this match as i'm doing some work experience.
I'm going to go with Andy in five though. Heres hoping.
If Andy plays aggressive he can cause the upset (yes, I know he is ranked above Ferrer but not on clay). I'm just not sure he is fit enough at the moment because of his back ......
I really hope he plays well and is happy with his performance win or lose.
Am at work today but hope to catch some of the match and have recorded it anyway. GO ANDEEEEEEE!!!!

I asked Petch
@markpetchey What must Andy do if he is to trouble Ferrer? I think he should hammer that forehand as much as he can, capable of troubling DF
Petch replied
@DaveArneRiise he has to go there to the F'hand definitely and use his slice to get Ferru up the court on his b'hand and bring him in
Petch is right, basically Andy isn't going to come out on top in a baseline battle. Must seize the initiative today which we all know he is capable of doing ;)

I have not seen the analysis as I cannot open it but it is very important to consider that Andy cannot just try and hit Ferrer off court, even with a slightly more powerful forehand (use of which is not 100% though and leads to a certain no. of UEs, depending on how well Andy is playing the court and the conditions and himself).
The quote from Petchy hints at hitting the ball in unexpected places.... slicing to bring him out of position... even giving him junk at times.
In short, strategy involves brain as well as brawn! :)
Ferrer is second best in the world on clay this year after Rafa - at 21 wins, 4 losses.

Almagro 28 wins (Including 3 finals, 2 of which he won) 6 defeats.
That's 7 more wins than Dave and just 2 more defeats.
Mathematicians will say Ferrer's is slightly better taking probability into account but that's still not concrete. What is concrete is that Almagro has more wins on clay this year than Both Nadal and Ferrer!

Shevdova and Kvitova are underway on Suzanne Lenglen. Shevdova just broken for 4-2 in the first set. Andy follows this match, but I fear this one could well be a marathon 3 setter.

No not at all. He's the best clay court player I've ever seen in my lifetime. However shouldn't underestimate Almagro he is one of a few players who is capable of troubling Nadal on clay. Not saying he is going to win but he can ruffle a few feathers and wouldn't be surprised if he won a set.

Shevdova up a set and a break over Kvitova now. Which means Andy could be on soon as he follows that match. I have this feeling that something special is going to happen today. If Andy wins today I think he will go and win the tournament. There I said it. It's written in the stars.

This is a monumental effort from Andy.

Aaaaaaaargh Andy - silly boy .... :grrr:
Right, channel that anger and take the next 3 sets please.
LET'S GO ANDY LET'S GO!!
plenty time to come back
and now we know we can break him
That was a pretty close set - keep up the good work, Andy! (Interesting that Courier said Ferrer is often broken when serving for the set, and sure enough he did.)

Indeed plus Andy I think has found a formula to beat Dave out here, albeit at the cost of the first set. He can do this, it will be like child's play for Andy in comparison to his recent efforts.

Andy had a shot right at the end of that first set but just lacked the consistency. Breaks right at the start of the 2nd though, hopefully he can make it count!

Unfortunately Andy hands the initiative back somewhat, apparently it is raining quite heavily atm.
Andy getting some whistles during his shirt change , cant say I blame them

Courrier hit the nail on the head again saying Andy has fallen back into Ferrer's trap. Base line rallies flat hitting, you'll never beat Ferrer like that and Courrier is spot on. Andy needs a chat with Lendl and change of plan here. Has to do something different.

Exactly, although I'm baffled as to why he can't see what to do himself it's blatantly obvious. Tennis players seem to be quite intelligent people unlike a lot of footballers but Andy looks like a complete fool right now with his tactics

It's hard to play out of your comfort zone though. What do you think of Kakawa signing by the way mate?
dewster99
06-06-2012, 15:50
yeah although he used to do it a lot more so should be easier for him. Unfortunately gotta go back to work now mate but to be honest not seen him so can't comment. Hopefully they are right about him not just being a shirt seller

Andy needs to shorten the points. Never going to win one of those long rallies it seems.

Lendl or somebody has to work on this inability to consolidate a break.
Ferrer played well but Andy did not go for it enought.
Oh well, try again...
C'mon Andy!

Every-time he breaks he gets broken back straight away. So infuriating.

That's very true. It's very hard to play against your natural game. Hard to play out of the comfort zone. Easier said than done but Andy is going to have to do just that today if he is to win.
