Wimbledon is pushing for a three week gap between Wimbledon and Roland Garros. About time too.

Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2161193/Wimbledon-aim-avoid-clash-clay-court-season.html)- Exclusive: Wimbledon aim to avoid dash for the grass with schedule change

Wimbledon is set to push for a break from more than 100 years of tradition to create a three-week gap between itself and the French Open.

The All England Club’s leadership want to extend the grass court season by another week to avoid clashes with other major sports events and allow players more time to adjust from clay to grass.

Response to Wimbledon story almost 100 % in favour of 3-week gap with French. Many wonder why it has not happened before.

Brad Gilbert ‏@bgtennisnation

@Mike_Dickson_DM in a perfect world we should have a masters 1000 on grass 2 weeks before wimby fact that queens and Halle are 250 is crazy?

For the best I think!

Of course there should be a longer gap but will the powers that be listen!

Its interesting that Wimbledon are pushing for it. I'd always got the impression that Wimbers did not want to move. I think the ATP used to say it was difficult to move events because of other events in the countries etc, but as the World Cup and Grand Prix now overlap there is a much better excuse to move Wimbledon back a week.

Hopefully Wimbledon's stance will make a difference, even more reason to do so now!

Interesting...not a bad idea at all.

Imagine how good it would be for the likes of Flemchins, Delgadski, J.Murray, Marray etc all great doubles players especially on grass!!!

Three week gap is a great idea - now a Masters 1000 on grass please!

Send these comments to the ATP!
How? It'd be great to have that for the grass season and the British players.

The grasscourt season just got longer ....... it'll take another 3 years though.

Wimbledon ‏@Wimbledon (https://twitter.com/Wimbledon) The AELTC has confirmed a date change to The Championships, #Wimbledon (https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23Wimbledon), effective from 2015... http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/press_releases/2012-07-19/201207191342698319697.html (http://t.co/9OK6SmUE)

Bound to be more articles on this but here's a few tweets:

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser (https://twitter.com/stu_fraser) Wimbledon to be moved back a week from 2015. Great move. Intrigued to see how the three weeks pre-SW19 in the calendar will look.

Will Queens or Halle become a Masters 1000 event? If one does, what happens to the other one? Will we see some new tournaments?

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) It will take them a further year, to 2015, but Wimbledon will start a week later. It has taken lots of time but it's the right move
Assuming the Open dates don't change in 2015, Wimbledon will finish a week before the golf, on July 12. Five whole weeks of grass. Hurrah!

Barry Flatman ‏@Barry_FlatmanST (https://twitter.com/Barry_FlatmanST) Wimbledon will officially move back a week in the calendar from 2012. Common sense finally rules with bigger gap after French Open Now we wait for the BBC (who of course rule both Wimbledon and the Open golf) to work out their tactics.
Talk amongst the decision makers was busy at Wimbledon this year with talk of a grass court Masters event. But it might be in Germany

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser (https://twitter.com/stu_fraser) Peter Dawson on 5live says that R&A & All England Club have discussed date change. 2015 Open at St Andrews immediately follows Championships

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/18913701)- Wimbledon Championships moved back a week from 2015

Wimbledon will start a week later from 2015 to allow players a three-week rest period following the French Open.

:yahoo: :yahoo: about time too

Huge props to @Wimbledon. Adding an extra grass court week after Paris (starting 2015) is a big positive for the sport & players. Well done.

great news, but do hope Queens doesn't suffer as a result.

Mark Petchey ‏@markpetchey

Excellent decision by the AELTC to move a week back. Hope Halle and Queens can find the cash to upgrade to 500's which they should be

david1610
19-07-2012, 22:09
I think Mark Petchey's suggestion of an upgrade to 500 for both is a natural step. Both tournaments should be rewarded for their support of grass and neither should suffer by one becoming a 1000.
And wasn't it Germany who most recently lost a Master's so with Wimbledon and currently the O2 finals it would be hard to argue the case for a 1000 as well for the UK.

cazza99
19-07-2012, 22:11
I should think they will put Queens and Halle back a week to make them 500s as a 500 cannot be the week following a grand slam.

If they could get the stupid tax laws changed back for GB, we might attract better players again, and have the hope of a masters here.
Another daft few paragraphs on this topic by Jonothan Overand on the Beeb website. Someone should sack him and let one of us take over. :grrr:

Certainly good news, though still a bit disappointed it not happening for another 3 years.
