View Full Version : WIMBLEDON R1: Andy destroys Davydenko 6'1, 6'1, 6'4. :-)

Andy is up against tough competition from the very start of Wimbledon 2012.
His R1 opponent is Nikolay Davydenko (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/Nikolay-Davydenko.aspx), currently WR#47 but with a career high of #3 in 2006.
Andy leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=D402) 5-4 but it's 3 years since they last played each other and the 31yr old Russian has slipped in the rankings during that time. Known to dislike playing on grass the Davy's best effort at Wimbledon has been a 4th round exit in 2007. He was still at his best when Andy first moved onto the Seniors tour but, as can be seen from the records below, Andy has had some good 2 set wins over Nikolay.
The Russian has been capable of beating the best (London ATP Tour Final in 2009) but this is not his favourite surface and his game has gradually diminished. He lost in the R128 at both the OzOpen (Cipolla) and Roland Garros (Seppi) and his best performances this year have been at Rotterdam indoors (S, lost to Federer) and Nice on clay(S, lost to Brian Baker!).
Andy is still suffering from his ongoing back problem sustained at the beginning of the year so getting this match done and won in 3 sets would be the best option for him.

Wednesday?
I thought they always play the first round matches over two days?
I thought so too Maza - I thought it was only the US Open where the first round was still being played on Wednesday.
I assume that the mention of Wednesday is in case of rain delays.

I assume that the mention of Wednesday is in case of rain delays.
Yes!!! Given what the weather has been like the last few weeks over here!!!
Showers are currently forecast for Tuesday between 13.00 and 19.00.
Andy would be fine to get his match played provided he is put on Centre Court (roof).
Wimbledon, unlike the other Slams, aims to complete R1 on Mon/Tue, R2 on Wed/Thur and R3 on Fri/Sat. This is because, unlike the other Slams, there is no play on middle Sunday.
Then they have 'super-Monday' which has ALL the R16 matches for the Mens and Ladies draw.
After that the Ladies play Tues Qtrs, Thurs Semis and Saturday 7th July Finals.
The Men play Wed Qtrs, Fri Semi's and Finals on Sunday 8th July.
Rain permitting .......

Certainly not the easiest of openers but mind you Davydenko is not the player of old and grass has never been his best surface. Having said that can't take anything for granted as it could still be a challenge in the opening round. However, let's hope Andy is in good form and gets his campaign underway in a confident manner.

I'm amazed Davy's even turned up. He hates playing on grass and doesn't seem to like either Wimbly or London. I reckon this'll be fairly straightforward for Andy.
Good luck, Andy. One match at a time. I've got everything crossed for you. Sending you positive vibes. <zen>
Looking at Andy's 1/4 of the Draw, I don't see any of them troubling him if he is well, healthy and pain-free in a 5 setter except for Ferrer who did well last week. I'm sure he is going to be up to his #4 ranking against the lot of them. Del P is carrying a knee injury. I think the "Joker" has a harder task against Berdych, Gasquet, Lu and Amalgro. Good health and luck Andy.

Good luck Andy !!! :):) I cant wait to watch him
When I saw the draw I drew a sharp intake of breath, Andy has not won a match on grass yet this year ... BUT when I think about it logically, I know that Davy hates grass and isn't the player he once was. Let's just hope he doesn't get fired up by playing a top 5 player in a grand slam ... Andy can do this and use it to kick start a brilliant Wimbledon, Go Andy :cheer::swingin:

Davydenko's record on grass really is rather woeful - he even lost to Lee Childs in 2003!!!
His career grass court record is *9W/18L of which Wimbledon 7W/10L (see below), Queens 0W/2L, Halle 2W/4L, Den'bosch 0W/2L (including losing to well known grasscourt specialist Willy Canas)

Depending on the time I may still be at work but my last day then off for the rest of Wimby :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
They often put Andy on last match so that people like me can watch after work ... here's hoping
According to Neil Harman:
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes Tomorrow on Centre court: Kvitova, Nadal, Murray. No.1 Hewitt/Tsonga, Azarenka; Roddick/Jamie Baker
A couple of good matches on No 1 but, as expected, I won't get to see Andy

what time do we reckon this is going to be on..im off work all day but do some private work between 5.30-8pm..which is probably when the match is going to be on?!!! :'( argh
I'm thinking if I get home by 4.30pm that should be ok. BBC is a nightmare - you just can't tell which match is going to be on which channel for recording purposes or on the red button for that matter (which Sky+ won't record at all - when we used our simple dvd recorder in days gone by you were able to record the red button that way )
They have just closed the roof. I hope it will be open again for Andy's match otherwise it could help the donkey.

Just got home and not read any of this thread. But, what a difference! He was a completely different player to the one I saw at Boodles on Wednesday. No sign of any back trouble whatsoever, and played really well.
Just fantastic play from our boy - well done Andy!!!!
Just looked back a couple of pages. I've read that Haas apologised to Andy, saying that his remarks were taken out of context, and reading that report of what Nikolay said, it seems to me that his remarks have also been taken out of context. I'm sure none of the players really have a gripe with Andy over this.

I'm sure none of the players really have a gripe with Andy over this.
I suspect there are two levels of player comments - one will be the dressing room banter e.g. if a player seems to be very conscious of his/her appearance, and is always preening, I am sure players will make fun of that. I suspect players may comment on the fact that Andy sometimes looks half-dead on court and then a few seconds later shows in his movement he is one of the most athletic players on the tour - we comment on how he looks during matches! I am sure they might have a joke at Andy's frequent chiding of himself.
Fair enough....
The other level I suspect is that players off camera/mic probably comment on players who are always calling trainers on, skating thin with the rules and sportsman/womanship, and who retire hurt seemingly at the drop of a hat. The players will have their own list of the players who are the least angelic, shall we say. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Andy will be regarded as an opponent who plays fairly and squarely and who wins or loses as a result of his tennis.
So no need to worry methinks!
Andy played great tennis and it was a joy to behold. I'm not getting over-excited though because, let's face it, Davydenko on grass is a bit like a rabbit in headlights. What really pleased me was that Andy had the opportunity to practise and gain confidence in some of the shots he must have been practising and he pulled them off a treat. So they should be in the armoury ready for the next round. He was moving well and looked like he was playing with intent - none of this winning a set or 2 and then ending up having to play 5 because of loss of intensity and focus. All this will stand him in good stead when facing whatever is to come.
