These are the matches that are so hard... really does come down to one or two points a set when your opponent is serving well!

So glad for the rest of the tournament Andy got it done in four!

Well done Andy. He played a great and canny match. Cannot be easy keeping your rhythm and concentration against that type of player. See that Dimitrov has retired so it's Baghdatis next, which I think I prefer.

I'm glad that Andy playes Baggers next - he knows how to play him. What news of Raonic?

Jan
28-06-2012, 17:28
Raonic plays after Ward.
Can't see Bally getting on court today!

Tie-break
28-06-2012, 17:28
Raonic plays Querry on Court 1 right after James Ward beats Fish!!

Or not, sadly. Thought he could make it when it went to a fifth set, but twas not to be.

Nina

Poor James
he could beat Mardy
But Fish was good after that heart surgery..

well I have finally decided to register for this forum so Andy better not go and lose today!
from what I have seen so far I expect another straight sets victory. :) (just!)

Hello Steveo and welcome to the forum!
:welcome:

It wasn't quite a straight sets victory after all but Karlovic is so tough to break with that booming serve of his.

Don't care if Andy didn't play his best today, type of match where getting the W is the most important thing. Performance irrelevant.

To be fair to Dr Ivo as well he played excellently I thought.

I've just added the match stats to the Match Summary (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1156-Andy-Murray-at-Wimbledon-Match-summaries-and-stats&p=75158&viewfull=1#post75158) (more of a commentary today!) and something that stands out is that Andy made only 8 unforced errors to Ivo's 42!!! Ivo had only one break point chance (in the first game of the first set) which he took; Andy made 4 out of 7.

Madeline

I'm not so sure Ivo did make so many unforced errors - I think Andy forced most of them!

Does anyone else think that Ivo looks like Herman Munster - that's if you're old enough to remember The Munsters!

Yes!! :rolling: He also looks like Boris Karloff!! All he needs is the bolt through his head!!!

Andy maybe didn't play his best tennis throughout (though have yet to see first half of the match), however the important thing is that he stepped it up on most of the big points and found a way past a tricky opponent in 4. In the 3rd he was returning really well even if Ivo dipped a bit and and rose to the challenge in the 4th set breaker. Think I was relieved that it didn't go to 5. Hopefully Andy will benfit from this test in the later rounds, even though some of the other matches will be a bit different! Andy had some gems and overall proud of his performance.

Having watched all of the match I thought Andy played well against a very tricky opponent. His service was quite good and though there were shots he should have made, on the whole it was good. Very glad it was only 4 sets and only two tiebreaks so he shouldn't be as tired as I feared a 5 setter with all tb's would be. Looking forward to his match with Baggy - shouldn't be too difficult!

Although I was a bag of nerves watching parts of the match, it was good to see a match where it wasn't just 2 players hitting the ball as hard as they could (well, apart from the serves!!)

I thought Andy played extremely well when allowed to hit the ball - seemed to me he had a clear strategy and executed it. Apart from a few enjoyable points and some deft network from Ivo, it was pedestrian and if Ivo had won it would have been a travesty. The man can't play IMHO - some of his shots were downright embarrassing and Andy had no need to play his best tennis - he can save that for later. Justice was done. I just hate someone who's all serve and nothing else.

Well done Andy!!!! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

just seen on BBC Ivo having a go at the linos for calling foot faults on him. Reckons he would've won otherwise

Yes just sounds like sour grapes but obviously in a bad mood!

Thought Andy was very measured in his response to the 'foot fault' claims. I just hope now though that he can distance himself from all the 'cheating' ballyhoo.

I think he'll be under even greater pressure now that Nadal is out. The media will have a field day. Glad Lendl's around to help keep him focused.

Well done Andy!!!! :cheer::cheer::cheer: Said to husband during match that Ivo was a serve and occasional drop-shot man. You're right Pat, so many errors and wild shots from Karlovic. Glad Andy kept calm and went about his business though in the last tie-break I was like a mad woman. These players with massive serves and little else get on my nerves also. Let's just cheer for Andy...he played well and he won which is the important thing. Go Andy!!!!:cheer::cheer::cheer:

Well done Andy!!! Andy was always the better player despite Ivo's huge serve! Some sublime shots especially that gasquet like shot from the other side of the net!

Andy stayed solid throughout and weathered the storm brilliantly. Was so impressed with his service holds (apart from the daft first game), he was like a brick wall. Great thread title btw, Ivo outwitted and the better man won!

It's the first match in ages that I've watched without having a sofa moment before each Andy service game. He wasn't really challenged, so holding (apart from that first tight, nervy game) wasn't really going to be an issue. He'll have a harder time in the next round.
