Andy v Jo

Andy leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=T786) by 5-1, and the last win for JWT was in R128 at the Oz Open in 2008. Both men have a title under their belts won in the same week earlier this year - Andy in Brisbane and Jo in Doha.

Jo has come through a tricky match against Kohlschreiber 7'6, 4'6, 7'6, 6'2
Andy has just beaten Duracell Daveed in an equally tough 6'7, 7'6, 6'4, 7'6

Both will be glad to have tomorrow 'off' to recuperate their strength and gear up for the Semi-Final.

There will be some who will say 'at least Andy doesn't have to face #2 Rafa' at this stage. That would be to seriously underestimate Tsonga who has had a good year so far and is playing very well. At 27 he's 2yrs older than Andy with 8 titles to his name (Andy has 22) and he plays a good grass court game. Although Muzzah leads their H2H 2-0 on that surface.

Andy won't underestimate this guy but he knows he has the game to beat him.

One of them will reach a Wimbledon Final for the very first time .......

The match is on Friday, on Centre Court (where Andy has more experience than JWT).
We'll confirm the time as soon as we know it.

Tsonga is such a dangerous player, can blow anyone off the court if he gets it going. Does anyone remember him coming back from 2 sets down to beat Federer last year. Was breathtaking. Tsonga also had Match points in the Queens match last year.

Andy has the game to to counter his threats though, if he keeps focused and composed out there he has a great chance.

Really looking forward to it.

Should be a great match to watch if you're a neutral - but expect it to be a Murraycoaster for us!

I just hope Andy doesn't adopt a patience, careful game at the start..... Tsonga is one of those players who can just pounce on you at any time and the set is gone. Andy needs to be on top from the start!

This will be another tough match BUT i just feel it is Andy's time to shine and there will be tough times but Andy will pull through and win this. Compared to Ferrer Tsonga has more firepower and a bigger serve but will make more errors and doesn't defend anywhere near as well as Ferrer. I just hope that Federer and Nole kill each other in a 5 set marathon lasting hours.

Andy to win in 4 :) but i hope we don't need :wimbrolly:.

I think as long as Andy keeps his same attitude he will beat Tsonga. Tsonga can just play a blinder though, so he's verry dangerous, but Andy knows that. Can't wait for Friday - and no chance of the rain spoiling the fun :-)

I think that would work in Andy's favour!
a) he's not so keen on early starts although he's a lot better than he was
b) the stuffed shirts will probably leave after Nole v Fed and their places taken by proper tennis fans
c) the later atmosphere is much more relaxed precisely because a lot of the stuffed shirts have gorn home.
So, I think if he's on 2nd the crowds will be more vocal and he loves that.

Yes, that's very true but Andy has seemed to cope with all that very well in the past. All I know, from watching so many of his matches, is that I've seen him struggle far more to get going with a start before 2pm than a start after when he seems to be more at ease. And I think the crowd on Friday can be a key part of his success so if it's some of those who've queued for hours they'll be well ready to cheer like crazy.

Andy knows well what he has to do on Friday he has beaten Jo enough times to know. I for one believe in Andy, even if he gets beaten, Andy would give his all. All you have to do is believe in him and not have any negative thoughts. He has done well so far. I trust him. If he does not get to the Finals, that means it's not meant to be.

When Rafa went out I didn't get ahead of myself 'cos Andy still had several tough matches ahead of him but now I really believe he can do it!!!

If you are looking for omens for Andy Murray, Pickles the dog was kidnapped, and found again, just before England won the World Cup in 1966; at Wimbledon this year, Rufus the Hawk was kidnapped last week but has been reunited with his owner - I think it's safe put your money on a Brit winning the mens singles this yea ;)

I am not assuming anything, as we saw last year with Tsonga against Federer.
However, of Daviid, del Potro, Berdych, Tsonga, etc, Tsonga is the one I think that is the best match up for Andy. Tsonga admitted as much in an ESPN article (in the newspaper section).

So I am sure Andy will not be assuming anything, and Tsonga may blow Andy off court and at any given moment take a set off him, but this is one where, as long as Andy serves well, I think he can grind Jo down.

C'mon Andy!

I'm so glad that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Couldn't bear it if JWT went into the final and not Andy and would be equally gutted if he actually won the title, felt just the same when JMDP won the US. I know that sounds bad and I have nothing against JWT but I DO NOT want anyone else to nick a slam before Andy! My desire for Andy to win one is all-consuming when it comes to the other players and I will show no mercy :rolling:

However, I am quietly confident about Friday's match. Yes Jo has more weapons than Daveed but he is much more likely to miss, so if Andy serves well and is on fire, he should be able to handle Jo. In my mind the prospect of yesterday's quarter final was much more scary.

British men have reached 11 Wimbledon semis since the 2nd World War, and hence since Bunny Austin reached the Final in 1938, winning just 4 games in the Final against Don Budge.

British semi-finalists in the men's singles at Wimbledon since Fred Perry won the title: (in that year, 1936, Perry beat Budge in the semis and Austin lost to von Cramm)

1937 (4) Bunny Austin lost to (2) Gottfried von Cramm (GER) 8-6 6-3 12-14 6-1, who lost to (1) Budge in the Final
1938 (2) Bunny Austin beat (4) Henner Henkel (GER) 6-2 6-4 6-0, then lost 6-1 6-0 6-3 to (1) Budge in the Final

1961 Mike Sangster lost to (8) Chuck McKinley (USA) 6-4 6-4 8-6, who lost to (2) Laver in the Final

1967 Roger Taylor lost to Wilhelm Bungert (GER) 6-4 6-8 2-6 6-4 6-4, who lost to (3) Newcombe in the Final
1970 (16) Roger Taylor lost to (5) Ken Rosewall (AUS) 6-3 4-6 6-3 6-3, who lost to (2) Newcombe in the Final
1973 (3) Roger Taylor lost to (2) Jan Kodes (CZE) 8-9 9-7 5-7 6-4 7-5, who won the title

1998 (12) Tim Henman lost to (1) Pete Sampras (USA) 6-3 4-6 7-5 6-3, who won the title
1999 (6) Tim Henman lost to (1) Pete Sampras (USA) 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-4, who won the title
2001 (6) Tim Henman lost to (WC) Goran Ivanisevic (CRO) 7-5 6-7(6) 0-6 7-6(5) 6-3, who won the title
2002 (4) Tim Henman lost to (1) Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 7-5 6-1 7-5, who won the title

2009 (3) Andy Murray lost to (6) Andy Roddick (USA) 6-4 4-6 7-6(7) 7-6(5), who lost to (2) Federer in the Final
2010 (4) Andy Murray lost to (2) Rafael Nadal (ESP) 6-4 7-6(6) 6-4, who won the title
2011 (4) Andy Murray lost to (1) Rafael Nadal (ESP) 5-7 6-2 6-2 6-4, who lost to (2) Djokovic in the Final
2012 (4) Andy Murray plays (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

N.B. Pre-Open era, only 8 players were seeded and between 1971 (when tiebreaks were first introduced at Wimbledon) and 1979, tiebreaks came at 8-8 rather than 6-6.

Clearly Andy has to be the favourite for this, but so was Tim for the Goran match and Muzz for the Roddick match, and look how those turned out - though both opponents then went on to give a very good account of themselves in the Final, of course.

One thing which may help a bit this time, hopefully, is that this will be the first time in 45 years (i.e. in the Open era) that a British man has played a Wimbledon singles semi-final against a player who, like him, hasn't either reached a Wimbledon singles Final or won a different slam before.

Another quick stat for you, after someone on Twitter challenged me to come up with something a bit 'weird and wacky'.

When Ivan Lendl reached his first Wimbledon Final, it was his 27th slam main draw and 3 years after he first reached the Wimbledon semis.

This Wimbledon is Andy's 27th slam main draw, and he first reached the Wimbledon semis, well, you know ...

I say this knowing full well that Lendl had already won slams by then, hadn't reached every Wimbledon semi in between like Andy has and it wouldn't necessarily be the best 'omen' anyway, because Lendl lost in the Final. But as weird stats go, it's quite an odd one!

Really hope Andy can see off Tsonga and reach his first Wimbledon final but whilst Andy is the favourite here still nervous about this match. Obviously Andy has a good record with Jo even if there have been some tough matches, but we certainly can't take anything for granted. We all know JW can be dangerous and of course if he has a perfect day with his explosive brand of tennis can be really tough, though of course he can be streaky and at times make wild errors. Hopefully Murray will be on his A game, have a solid serving day and find the target with the returns when he has a chance to pounce.

Like you, I am desperate for Andy to win a grand slam - just one would do me to shut his critics up. I feel so tired today and can't settle to anything; goodness knows what I'll be like tomorrow. If he doesn't make it, I'll be depressed for weeks, by which time he'll be back for the Olympics and it will start all over again - wish I didn't get so involved, it can't do my heart or blood pressure any good so please Andy move it along quickly and successfully tomorrow if only for the sake of your older fans!

Bother, I have't really thought this through! I had a dentist appointment at 2:00 today, and as it wasn't worth driving all the way back to Northampton afterwards, I just worked from home for the rest of the afternoon.

Why on earth didn't I think to book the dentist appointment for tomorrow so I could have worked from home then, and had the tennis on in the background!??

Edit: at least Andy's second up, so there's now another reason to hope Nole v Fed is a long five-setter :big grin:

Oh, joy. They will start it on BBC1, move it over to BBC2, then back to BBC1 just when you least expect it. I wish the remote for the upstairs tv (where I record all his matches) would work from downstairs! By the time I have got my arthritic hips up the stairs to change channel, I've missed half a game.

Praying for Andy to come out strong and sweep Jo aside quickly, so he has plenty of energy for the final. 647

Hi guys - been a bit quiet lately as I've been in Spain for 3 weeks but have seen all of Andy's matches (except the second tie-break against Karlovic where I just had to go off for a walk - couldn't stand the tension)
I couldn't believe what a tough draw Andy had but then have always believed that Andy is better when he has to focus, focus again and focus some more.
Absolutely delighted so far and have that strange gut feeling that this could be....... might be......may well be...perhaps.... the year !!!

I've packed my 'Team Murray' T-shirt in my work bag in case it needs an early deployment (but I expect Nole v Fed to be a 3 or 4 hour duel). I've got that song from the John Lewis xmas advert in my head (please, please, please let me / get what I want / Lord knows, it would be the first time), think i could be going slightly doo-lally with the pressure!

I can only hope that Federer/Djokovic match is really long but I don't want to wish a long match on Andy! :wimcry: or ........ do I just forget about piano lessons this week?????

I think that would work in Andy's favour!
a) he's not so keen on early starts although he's a lot better than he was
b) the stuffed shirts will probably leave after Nole v Fed and their places taken by proper tennis fans
c) the later atmosphere is much more relaxed precisely because a lot of the stuffed shirts have gorn home.
So, I think if he's on 2nd the crowds will be more vocal and he loves that.

They are odd. Last week on the train I got chatting to a guy and I said I didn't like Fed. He almost collapsed and said think you are the only one! I said I can assure you I am not! Lol!

I believe in Andy, he'll stay focussed and not let up, he knows what to do. Small chance here.
