:trophy:
"Marray ends 52-year wait and celebrates with tea"
As droughts go this one had lasted only the 52 years. Jonny Marray yesterday became the first Briton to make the men's double final since 1960 after he and his Danish partner, Freddie Nielsen, stunned the defending champions Mike and Bob Bryan.
The last Britons in the final were Bobby Wilson and Mike Davies while the last British success came in 1936, the same year Fred Perry won his last singles title.
"Marray, described as the last serve-and-volleyer left in tennis by his partner, spent his £75 winner's gift voucher on a tea set. "He likes tea," said Nielsen."

Good luck Marray! Let's make it a double!
This is quite amazing. We wait all these years to get a Brit in a men's Wimbledon final, and then, just like buses, two come along at once.

A few days before the tournament, the Wimbledon trophy took a tour outside of Britain for the first time, travelling with ESPN to the United States, where it got picked up, fondled and passed around almost like a new-born baby. It did, however, throw up something I didn’t know before. The title of the men’s trophy reads: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” Now forget about the World Series-esque ludicrousness of it all. What’s more worrying is the “single-handed” bit – does that mean Murray, with two hands on his backhand, wouldn’t be allowed to win but Federer would?!

Wow that was amazing! Is that true that they qualify for the o2?

They are being interviewed on the BBC RL - maybe you will see it later?
I saw it, thx! Hope they stay together. And that they do get to go to O2.
I think there is some rule that allows a grand slam champion a place even if not in the top 8....but I am sure someone will check.
Couldn't see it on FAQs on ATP site, but hope they can

I seem to recall Petzchner and Melzer turning up at the WTF after they won Wimbly.
That's definitely right that in the doubles slam winners get to the WTF even if they're not in the top 8 - I remember that from a previous year.
Marray was on the BBC Look North local news today. It is not up on iplayer yet but here is the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01knp4t/Look_North_%28Yorkshire%29_09_07_2012/

I wonder why Johnny Marray has never played with Jamie Murray. Are they missing a trick here?
He has played with Jamie Murray a few times and they've won a few Challenger doubles titles together:-
Astana (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Ma/J/Jonathan-Marray.aspx?t=pa&y=2009&m=d&e=0#), Kazakhstan, 2009, Bergamo 2010, Salinas 2010.
They also got to the Final at Challengers in Jersey and Rhodes.
They partnered up for most of the first half of 2010 too but posted a number of R1 losses amongst those wins including R1 at Wimbledon to Nestor/Zimonjic in 5 close sets. After that they played Bastad and then Jonny hooked up with Jamie Delgado until the back end of 2011.
this from the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/jul/13/jonny-marray-wimbledon-doubles-winner)
a very long feature but rather good; at the end he says he had a text from andy on sat night.
clipping - "Has he heard from Andy Murray since he won? Oh yes, he says, he gets on well with the whole Murray clan – he, Andy, Jamie and their dad play together in an annual football match. "Yeah, he gave me a text on the Saturday evening."
and he went to the champions ball, took his bro, and they chatted to Federer - "What did Federer say to him? "He said, 'Brilliant match lads, congratulations.'" What! Federer called him and Freddie lads, I don't believe that. "Well, probably not lads, ha ha! He said, 'It looks like I'll be seeing a lot more of you this next year.' That was a nice touch. He says all the right things – it made us feel pretty good." that's FedX, even off duty!

Heartily recommend an interview with Jonny Marray in today's Sunday Times by David Walsh. Puts his lifestyle and achievement in perspective.
A few funny lines in there. Marray: 'I mean, who would want to sponsor me?'. Most he's had are free contact lenses from the local opticians.
Marray also reveals in Sunday Times interview that he had to track down a pair of grass court shoes at a sports shop for Wimbledon.

There's a great piece in The Times about Jonny Marray and his brilliant year.
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3626152.ece
Unfortunately, you need to pay to view but here's a couple of extracts.
it really highlights how the doubles players swop partners!
Here's hoping Jonny has a great year in 2013.
This takes careful following
Jonny started the year by splitting up with Jamie (Delgado), decided to play with Dustin, had the odd match with (another) Jamie(Murray), then partnered Olivier(Marach), thought about playing with Adil but decided it would be better with Freddie, but had an arrangement to play another tournament with Dom first, had a fantastic fortnight with Freddie who then wanted to play on his own, tried out with Ross and then Treat, went back to Freddie and will start next year with Andre.
Such is the world of doubles tennis, where only blood brothers such as Bob and Mike Bryan, the twins from the United States, or a couple of decent players who speak a language no one else speaks, * la Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, from Poland, tend to stick together for more than a year. Everyone else bickers, falls out, falls back in, envies someone else’s partner and plays the tennis brand of the do-si-do.
So Marray and Delgado split and Marray teamed up with Dustin Brown, the dreadlocked German, who tweeted that together they had formed the team Milk Chocolate. “Dustin is a bit of a character who loves to be the centre of attention,” Marray said. “We played from February to April, reached the final of three Challengers and I was feeling good in myself. But he decided to play grass with someone ranked higher [Oliver Marach, of Austria], which gave them a chance of being seeded in certain events. I was in a bit of limbo and that’s when I was in touch with Freddie. I could have easily played Wimbledon with Dustin.”
Actually, Marray might also have partnered Adil Shamasdin, the Canadian, but was worried their rankings were not good enough for automatic entry into the main draw. He entered the first of two Nottingham events with Nielsen and they won their opening match 6-1, 6-1 with Nielsen playing “lights out tennis” according to Marray before losing in the final to Dominic Inglot, a Briton, and Trey Huey, of the Philippines.
A couple of weeks earlier, Marray had sought a wild card into Queen’s with Inglot but had been refused, so decided to partner his fellow Briton in the second week of Nottingham and Eastbourne, knowing that Inglot was playing Wimbledon with Huey. When Marray learnt that he might receive a wild card into the main draw at Wimbledon, he chose to team up with Nielsen. Are you with me?
Jonny Marray hoping to play for Davis Cup. Pity he's not a singles player! http://www1.skysports.com/tennis/news/12110/8321675/Jonny-Marray-hoping-to-break-into-Britain-Davis-Cup-team
Yes - it will be difficult to find a place in the team for him when we already have a very successful established doubles pair.

The retirement of Jonny Marray seems to have passed by without any comment. I can't find any announcement on the internet, but he last played in February 2017.
It was a great boost to British tennis when he won the Wimbledon Mens Doubles, so Happy Retirement!
Think he is now coaching Henri Kontinen in the doubles!
I found this Facebook post from 15 December
https://www.facebook.com/HallamshireTS/
The Academy at Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club.
December 15 at 10:37am · Sheffield ·
After his recent retirement from a great professional career, 2012 Wimbledon Champion and GB Davis Cup star Jonny Marray will be joining the team at Hallamshire
Jonny will be available for 1-1 lessons and will fit his work at Hallamshire around his travelling coaching job with World No.2 pair and World Tour Finals Winner John Peers and Henri Kontinen.
We are proud to have a person of Jonny’s qualities joining the team. He has a unique insight into tennis at the highest level and his experiences at the biggest events and greatest courts in the game are something he can’t wait to share with the members of the Club.
“I have really enjoyed my first steps into the world of coaching and am excited to start my new role with The Academy. I’m looking forward to joining the team at Hallamshire who were very supportive during my playing career”
I hadn’t realised he retired. All the best to him.
Nor me but he will always be a Wimbledon champion!
