NB: Roger Federer could skip this event without any penalties. The ATP made a Rule Change regarding exemptions - presumably because the guys are playing older. A player needs to be 31 years (as of January of the year) of age, 600 match plays and 12 yrs of service to receive an exemption. Fed having already reached the final two conditions, he's allowed an exemption for 2 MS1000 tournaments this year. He can skip all MS1000 tournaments next year if he wants to as he will be 31 years old in january.

Hmm - if Nadal is out of the Olympics, I wonder if he will have to withdraw from this too? Hard courts are hard on the knees.

Very little from the Nadal camp but coming back too soon would surely risk his US Open chances. I guess if he did miss this he'd then have an extra week for rest and then play Cincy only before the USO.

Id be very surprised if Rafa plays Toronto , and actually Andy may not either , if he goes far at Olympics

Im not counting on any of the top 4 being in Toronto , will have to see what happens.

I would agree with you.
Missing the Olympics must mean something serious and a week will not change that. I suspect he may manage Cinci and possibly not even that.

Agree that it must be quite serious Rafa not defending his Olympic title. We'll have to wait and see when he plays again. Though I do hope Andy plays.....he has always enjoyed playing in Canada.

I'm so mad with Rogers Cup. They have put Rafa, Rog and Djoko on all their print and tv ads leaving Andy out despite Andy having won back to back 09/10, the second-most recent champ and despite the fact Rog last won in 2006. Hmmmm. Their excuse?:

Rogers Cup Toronto‏@rogerscupto
@RoastLamb27 All 4 are 2-time RC champs. It was tough to leave one off since that's all we had room for so went w/Top 3 in rankings.

The sad thing is that if Roger, Nole and Andy are still in contention at the Olympics next weekend it's going to be very hard for them to get across to Toronto and get over the time difference and play 2/3 days later (I think they get R1 Byes). And there still seems to be doubt over whether Rafa will make it there at all.

So their advertising campaign might be a bit on the hopeful side.

I think Toronto will be very short of top players this year. Still, it will give someone else the chance to win a title.

It'll serve them right of none of the big names turn up. But I'll guarantee that if a lower-ranked player wins they won't be on the print or tv ads next year.

Hi All,

First point.

Big Andy fan, been following his career for several years.

Just to add, absolute crazy scheduling of the two masters events following the Olympics. I would not be surprised if all remaining in the Olympics will pull out of this event or certainly struggle in the early rounds.

Cheers,

If I remember the rules correctly, all the top players are allowed to miss one Master event without being penalised (they still get a 0 pointer). It's only subsequent withdrawels they get punished (fines etc.).

Oh and welcome unclebg, great to have you with us.

Not quite.
The Masters are mandatory for the top 30 - the only one which is optional is Monte Carlo unless they have a medical condition which forces them to withdraw.

There are criteria which have to be met for any of the top 30 to miss any of the other Masters without penalty (a zero pointer) and the ATP recently revised their rules for exemption.

1.08 Reduction of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Commitment
A. A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall be
reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:
1) 600 matches* (as of 1 January of the commitment year)
2) 12 years of service
3) 31 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year)
If all three (3) conditions are met then the player has a complete exemption from the
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 player commitment.
The first Year of Service shall be the first calendar year in which a player has competed
in at least twelve (12) tournaments offering ranking points.
* From 2010 only main draw singles matches played in the following events will be
used in the player’s match count for purposes of this rule.

The main draw is being done today for this event - time not specified but probably not until later afternoon our time. It'll be interesting to see if the likes of Djokovic, Murray and Tsonga (all due to play Olympic medal matches on Sunday) will withdraw?

Nole is defending 1000 points from his win there last year so would probably want to play to defend them. Andy is only defending 10 points, JWT is defending 360 for his Semi-Final place. They'd all get Byes in R1 so their first matches would be Wednesday 8th but if Andy wins Gold he has to spend Monday on Olympic duties so couldn't fly to Toronto until Tuesday ... not much time to acclimatise and play.

They all need to head across the pond next week because of Cincy starting on Mon 13th Aug.
Watch this space .....

Meanwhile the Qualifying Draw is out ......
The cut-off was 172 (Mathieu) - shame Wardy wasn't fit and around.

Andy regularly clutches at bits of his body and carries on playing regardless - he's kinda proved that over the last 2 days as never before.

But the clutching could prove handy if he needs to pull out. On the other hand he may end up being on a roll after today (quick anti-jinx required here :cauldron:) and so need to keep it up by playing Toronto. To interrupt the momentum might not be a good idea.

I can't see how any of those that played today can make Toronto. It would mean flying tomorrow - having only Tuesday to adjust to jetlag and a new playing surface - before playing on Wednesday. Just not do-able IMHO.

Do you think so? She seemed to be pretty definite about it.
Andy is still in the draw and there are strict rules about making public any withdrawals.
IF Sam Smith knew anything she could get a ticking off from the Toronto Tour Director AND Andy's management XIX because anything she may have heard in confidence should not be made public until Toronto are ready to say so. Andy could be penalised for that sort of gaffe.

I don't think she knows tbh.
And until we hear it officially Andy will still be playing in Toronto.

Not sure how many rounds he'll manage with jetlag but it's not a bad draw for him until Milos.

Monday's draw. (http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2012/421/op.pdf) Hutchins and Marray will play on court 1 at 1 p.m. local (6 p.m. UK).

Confirming Alis's post - Andy is not the defending champ but went out last year in R2 to Anderson.
But he did win it back to back in 2009 and 2010.

I also think he's behaving like a true professional by getting straight back out there; although there's no guarantee he'll go far this year either. He's not good at handling jetlag even if it is slightly 'better' going East to West 'cos of gaining extra hours. He also has to think about conserving strength for the rigours of the USO which is potentially *7 x 5-setters!!!
I hope Kim is insisting on a holiday in September after that ... he'll have earned some r&r.

I wish Andy was having an extra day or two in London to soak up the atmopsphere and be Olympic Champion for a few days. I can understand him needing to go later this week to be well prepared for Cincy even if he did miss Toronto though.

I wonder why he wasn't wearing his medal this morning for his interviews. Surely Maggie and Rusty haven't eaten them already!!

Shame Andy can't stay in Brit longer but he needs to focus on the US stretch now and as he's going over there anyway he may as well at least make an appearance in the first round in Toronto, even if he goes out. He'll need a chance to adjust from grass to hard courts and pdq at that. Jet lag deffo shouldn't be so bad in this direction. He also needs to hook up with Lendl again asap so they can build on his current confidence and euphoria IMHO. So I'm not taking Toronto too seriously, just let him touch base out there regardless of the result and also as has been said, demonstrate his consummate professional attitude.

I'm going to Andy and Milos' match tomorrow night! Can't wait.

Loved it when the tournament director presented Andy with a gold medal cake. Andy looked seriously chuffed to bits and cut himself the biggest slice with the medal on it. I think he was really surprised.

The Canadian broadcast team, Sportsnet, have a live booth outside centre court where they conduct postmatch dissections and interviews. They had a really good one with Andy. He said he came to TO coz he really loves the tournament and they treat him very well and as he's had a lot of success here in the past he wanted to show his support. He said the cake was a really lovely gesture and that it was "massive". He also talked about how he felt during the medal award ceremnony when the flag went up and he sang the anthem. He seemed very relaxed altho' he said he was aching a bit in his joints (due to the change of surface) and he was sleepy.

I must say I was both surprised and delighted to see Andy had won so easily - his confidence must be sky high.

He could certainly do with a few free days, but I'd hate to see him lose to Raonic. It would leave a nasty H2H and that young man needs to be shown who is boss. After that he can let things loose a little

I had tennis friends who went yesterday and complained at how hot it was. Imagine playing in that heat? App. Milos and partner were on an outside court and it was crammed so full with spectators his coach couldn't find a seat. Why they didn't put them on centre or even grandstand is beyond me. They've even named Grandstand after him too!!!

They have moved the Cilic/Tipsarevic match to Court 1 (to finish) but have kept the rest of Stadium matches as they were but with a revised start time.
It might not make any difference if it keeps raining though ...... very tight schedule as it is!
Thur R3, Fri Qtrs, Sat Semi's and Sun Final.

I've seen some snippets from the presser he gave:-

"knee felt sore this morning, had some physio, did a warm-up on the bike but it was still sore".
Seems it's his left knee which he says he's not had problems with before; pain is at the side.
Didn't want to play and make it worse. Says there's usually more time to prepare for this surface, and the surface change takes it's toll.

I suspect his team also took account of the weather forecast and the possibility of playing 2 matches in one day which wouldn't help.

The next match on Stadium is already up on livescore - Nole v SamQ

On Grandstand Monaco leads 6'2, 1'4 v Fish so that'll probably go to 3.

On Court 1 Tipsy leads Cilic 6'2, 4'3

Court 4 sees Chardy v Granollers about to start.

It's a shame they didn't put this match first on Court 4 at 11am instead of a doubles. At least then there'd have been a fair chance for all the R3's to get done today.

They may yet have to play Qtrs and Semi's Sunday and Final on Monday!!!

Also, I think they were playing some of the doubles inside yesterday so it would have made sense (and been fairer on all the guys) if they could have carried on doing that.

They've messed up a bit though.
Next up is Gasquet v Fish - originally scheduled for 15.00 local (um, 2hrs late!).

Kohli/Isner only 4 games into their match and the winner is due to play Milos at 19.00 local (in the first of the night session matches) with Nole playing AFTER that. Whereas Noley's oppo are closer to finishing their match so a switch would make sense?

I think they must be moving matches around and playing them as courts become available tonight.
The original OOP is here (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1226-CANADIAN-MASTERS-%28TORONTO%29-6-12-August-2012-Main-thread-information-and-Draw&p=91681&viewfull=1#post91681) but it's a bit shot up already.

Fish v Gasquet are currently on Stadium, 3-3 first set, and it's 8pm already in Toronto.
To keep to the ticket that means Raonic/Isner next - around 10/10.30 and Nole to start at midnight.
It'd be fairer to play Nole/Haas on Grandstand as soon as they can 'cos those guys have already had a bit of rest. Isner will be shattered after a 3 setter.

Turns out Djokovic played Haas on grandstand and Milos vs Isner was on centre after Fish-Gasquet at 7 p.m. Nice of Djoko to do that actually.

Anyway, tough match for Milos. Totally winnable esp. as Isner must have been tired and he got an early break in the first set then let himself be broken back then he had chances in the tiebreak and scuppered those too. Sigh. Maybe he was nervous I don't know but he should have won this match and got into the semi where he may have been able to beat Gasquet as well. ARGH!

As for the other matches, Fish won the first set 7-5 then totally ran out of steam so Gasquet won the next two easily, 6-1 6-2. Haas gave Djoko a run for his money but Djoko prevailed: 6-3 3-6 6-3. The fans are very close to the players on grandstand and one fan was heckling him and Djoko went right up to him and told him off. The fan looked so embarrassed as well. Hilarious!

Nole will likely still be up for this and of course at least doesn't have to play Andy this week. of course Nole only played 1 doubles match at the olympics even if he did have a few 3 setters in the singles and a tough semi too! Looks like Isner could well make the final and impressive that he put out Milos in straights.

I'd normally be right into any Masters series but have only seen Andy's match thus far, though imagine I'll catch the final. More interested in the Olympics really once Andy pulled out!

I think there must be a rain delay again coz they should be playing doubles and nothing is on livescore as yet. We keep getting rain showers here. Watching the women's from Montreal but I'm finding it all rather dull. First time ever I've not been terribly interested in RC. Must be the Olympics.

Yes, it has been raining. They have moved the doubles to another court and Isner v Gasquet is expected to start at 3pm, 8pm UK time.

The dubs still aren't showing in livescore

That often happens if they switch doubles or other matches indoors; for some reason they don't switch the livescore feeds over.

Much too busy watching the Olympics to watch this so I'm glad none of my faves are in the semis.

Flashscores (http://www.flashscores.co.uk/tennis/) are showing the doubles scores. You have to scroll down quite a long way.

The Bryans won, Mirnyi/Nestor are a set down and 3 all.

The match hadn't started when I was asking about it before. Vamos Marc & Marcel!

Ritchie is a set and a break up on Isner.

After a couple of rain delays Djoko beat Tipsy 6-4 6-1 at 11:45 p.m. So it's going to be Djokovic vs Gasquet in the final. Gasquet made the final in 2006 (after beating oor Andy in the semi-final) where he lost to Federer in three sets (I wuz there!). I'd love to see him win tomorrow but I'm sure Djokovic will get the better of him. The final is in the evening rather than the usual afternoon so Djoko will be able to get more rest.

Certainly syrprised Ritchie put out Isner though hear John picked up an injury, nonetheless a great win for Gasquet! Can't see him stopping Nole in the final though.

Seemingly Isner has withdrawn from Cinci.

Djoko leading Gasquet in the final 6-3 , 2-0

3 - 2 for Djoko 2nd set now , Glad I didnt pay big money to go to this final , its rather boring.

And Novak is the Rogers Cup Champion 6-3 , 6-2

I'm glad I didn't go either altho' it looked full. I didn't even watch it properly - just skimmed through my tape.

Nice that Djoko was interviewed outside centre court at the tennis desk. They never used to do that. Gives the fans an opportunity to get up close and personal. Djoko said some lovely things about RG and Canada; he wants to see Niagara Falls but doesn't have the time - too bad, I could have given him a guided tour.

Well done to Nole for being virtually the last man standing. This must have been the least vaunted Masters ever - what a shame for Toronto!

Well Djoko had extra motivation. He didn't win a medal so was down in the dumps about that, said that when he arrived in TO he got such a great welcome it cheered him right up and gave him something else to focus on. Plus he was defending his title and he said he wanted to be number one again after the USO. So he's all juiced up.
