Match Format
All matches shall be the best of three sets except for the men's singles final which shall be the best of five sets. The Tie-Break shall operate in every set except the fifth set in the men's singles final and the third set in the other matches (except mixed doubles), when an advantage set shall be played. In the mixed doubles the third set shall be played as a match tie-break (10 points).

Points/Prizes
In agreement with the ATP points will be awarded for the Mens and Ladies Singles events.
No points are awarded for the Ladies, Mens or Mixed Doubles events.

Gold: 750, Silver: 450, Bronze: 340, SF: 270, QF: 135, R16: 70, R32: 35, R64: 5
WTA Ranking Points
Gold: 685, Silver: 470, Bronze: 340, SF: 260, QF: 175, R16: 95, R32: 55, R64: 1

There is no prize money awarded for the Olympic events.
Olympic Medals are awarded as follows:-
Gold = winner
Silver = losing finalist
Bronze = winner of the play-off match between the losing Semi-Finalists.

Qualification for the 2012 Olympic event - ITF and ATP announce Olympic agreement (News Article)


The ITF and the ATP today announced an agreement to award singles ranking points for men at the 2012 Olympic Tennis Event in London at Wimbledon. This is the fourth successive Olympic Games where men have received ranking points.

As a result of the agreement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will allow nations to receive up to 4 entries into the men’s singles and 2 entries into the men’s doubles, with a maximum number of 6 men per country on-site.

The ATP rankings of Monday 11 June 2012 will be used as the basis for determining the 56 direct acceptances in the 64-player men’s singles draw, subject to a maximum of 4 players per country as well as existing eligibility requirements.

6 of the remaining 8 singles places will be selected by the ITF’s Olympic Committee taking into consideration a player’s singles computer ranking and a geographic distribution of nations entered, as well as 2 Tripartite Commission Invitations decided by the IOC, National Olympic Committees and the ITF.

ATP rankings will also be used to determine the 24 direct entries in the 32-pair doubles draw, subject to a maximum of 2 pairs per country and a maximum of 6 men per country in total. Doubles players ranked in the Top 10 can receive direct acceptance into the event providing they have an eligible partner. The remaining 8 pairs will be selected by the ITF’s Olympic Committee.

The women’s singles event will also offer ranking points, with the same entry criteria used in the women’s singles and doubles events.

Entries for the 16-pair mixed doubles event will be confirmed on site.

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “The support of the ATP in finalising the agreement has ensured that as many of the top male players as possible are able to compete at the Olympic Tennis Event. This is great news for the event and the players, and we are confident that next year’s tournament will surpass the success of Beijing.”

“Wimbledon will be an incredible stage for tennis at the Olympic Games,” said Adam Helfant, ATP Executive Chairman and President. “We know ATP players are very much looking forward to representing their countries in London next summer.”

Olympics Tennis - Seedings announced

Roger Federer has been named as the top seed in the men's Singles Tennis tournament which begins at Wimbledon on Saturday. Wimbledon finalist Andy Murray is seeded third behind Federer and Serbia's Novak Djokovic. David Ferrer of Spain is fourth, with France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fifth, while Czech Tomas Berdych, Serb Janko Tipsarevic and Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro make up the top eight.

Unlike at the grand slams, where there are 32 seeds in a 128-strong field, the Olympic Singles tournament is a 64-man field featuring 16 seeds. It's the first time since tennis was reintroduced to the Games as a medal sport (at Seoul 1988) that it will be played on grass.

World number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus heads the seedings for the women's Singles with Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska second, followed by Russian Maria Sharapova and Wimbledon champion Serena Williams of the USA.

The men's Doubles field is headed by American twins Bob and Mike Bryan, with defending champions Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka seeded sixth.

Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond of the USA top the standings in the women's Doubles whilst their countrywomen Venus and Serena Williams, the Beijing gold medallists and Wimbledon champions, are unseeded.

The draw for the Singles and Doubles takes place on Thursday. The entries for the mixed Doubles will be decided over the weekend with the draw taking place next Tuesday.

MIXED DOUBLES DRAW

Only players already in either the Singles or Doubles main draws will be eligible.
Mixed Doubles matches start on Wednesday 1st August.

It's only a 16-team draw and there are likely to be many high ranked players/potential teams fighting for places.

GBR can only nominate 2 men and 2 women and it's by ranking on 11th June (see below for ITF Rules). Colin Fleming (D#30) and Ross Hutchins (D#31) would be ahead of Jamie (D#35) for consideration; as would Andy with his #4 singles ranking at that date.

It's possible that GBR might not have a team in the Mixed Doubles event at all unless we are given an ITF place (effectively a Wild Card).

From various pages of the ITF Rules (http://2012.itftennis.com/olympics/organisation/rules-regs.aspx) for the Olympics Mixed Doubles Tennis event:-

Draw of sixteen teams, both players from the same country and not more than two teams from any one country comprising: 12 Direct Acceptances and 4 ITF Places.

Four (4) ITF Places shall be selected for the mixed doubles event. Selection will be based on the recognised international computer rankings and geographical location.

The ITF will select doubles teams for direct acceptance from mixed doubles entries comprising players accepted in the singles and/or men’s/women’s doubles events, received from National Associations no later than Tuesday 31 July 2012 at 11.00, taking into account the recognised international singles and doubles computer rankings of 11 June 2012.

A maximum of two (2) men and two (2) women may compete as teams in the mixed doubles.

Main BBC coverage - The main Olympic coverage is on BBC1, BBC3 and the internet.
BBC2 will show coverage when the news is on BBC1.

Additional BBC coverage - There are another 24 channels dedicated to the Olympics provided by the BBC for those using Sky, Virgin, Freesat or the internet and 1 or 2 channels for those using Freeview.

Tennis on BBC - The BBC are allocating 2 of the 24 channels each day for tennis until the finals, one for Centre Court and one for Court 1. During parts of the day when other channels are available they will sometimes allocate more channels to tennis.
