Hard draw for Andy is not a bad thing as he proved at Wimbledon.

Also, this can't be bad news...

@NeilHarmanTimes: It looks as if The Fed may have done Andy an enormous favour by letting Stan carry Swiss flag this time around

They must be playing on Saturday

I was certainly hoping they would get Andy to play on the first day - that's why we chose to get tickets for the Saturday!

The scheduling, I assume, is up to the BOC and I would have thought they would want to open with the top British player....

The IOC can do as they please but since the ITF is the main advising tennis body they could well be suggesting the Olympics follows the same format as Grand Slams. Depending on the venue that usually means that either the defending champion (not applicable in this case) or the #1 Seed starts proceedings and the rest of his/her half plays that day too.

I'm trying to find out what they're doing ... not much information so far.

I've just looked up some archive information and in Beijing the #1 seed played on the first day (Federer, then as now). 2nd seed Nadal and his half of the draw were scheduled to play on day 2.
As it goes rain severely disrupted play in Beijing and the OOP on the Monday was a nightmare.

So, if the ITF follow the pattern of 2008 it is very likely that the top half (Federer's) will play on Saturday and the lower half on Sunday.

However, please remember that the doubles draws start on the same day as singles and in 2008 the Murray's played their R1 dubs on the first day.

Very hard to see anyone with a chance of stopping Fed until the final, such an outrageously easy draw!!

Can someone pl tell me how these draws are made! - Federer always seems to get the easiest passage and Andy the hardest; either someone up there likes him or someone doing the draw does! Does he also walk on water?

Might be hard to believe but the draws are done at random and with witnesses to ensure no fixing!
In the case of the Olympic draw it was made in front of a bunch of journalists who'd be only too happy to report if they spotted anything remotely dodgy - can you imagine the story?

The top 2 seeds are placed #1 top and #2 bottom. Seeds 3 & 4 are drawn from 'the hat' so there's no guarantee which half they'll be in; I think they then draw the rest of the seeds and then the other players.

The Olympics does allow for adjustments to be made to ensure that where there is more than one player from a particular nation that they don't meet. So, for example, you'll see in the Mens Doubles that the Murrays and Flemchins are in opposite halves, (same for the in the Ladies Doubles where our 2 ladies teams wouldn't meet before a Final) andin the Ladies Singles Bally, Hev and Anne are all in separate Quarters. This is set out in the Olympic/ITF rulebook.

AllyB
26-07-2012, 16:41
I had thought the Olympic draw should have been unseeded in the interest of equality and it being a one-off tourney, but was concerned that Andy might be the loser in a totally open draw - couldn't really have been much worse though!

O.K. - I don't usually go along with conspiracy theories but this is happening just far too often to be pure coincidence. Fed gets the easiest draw and Andy gets the most difficult - so predictable. How did they do the draw? Did they use balls? No draw is tamper proof - balls can be weighted or marked to the touch in some way. Or perhaps it's just that Fed has sold his soul to the devil!

Linda
26-07-2012, 18:25
Interestingly, someone was telling me recently of various ways that they can rig it. One was exactly what you describe. Although the fact that they can do it doesn't necessarily mean that they do.

If you feel that strongly about it you need to write to the ITF or ATP; but without proof to back up such allegations I'm not entirely sure what sort of response you'd get back.

It is quite incredible how Andy seems to get the short straw time and time again and Fed is certainly blessed with good fortune - and maybe that's just the way life is. All the more credit to our boy for doing so well when it's never that easy.

The flip side is that perhaps it spurs him on to try harder - he certainly gave his all at Wimbledon and will do the same for the Olympics but yes, it's about time Lady Luck smiled on him. He's earned it.

It may be to do with the doubles - I noticed that Ferrer isn't playing in the singles on Sat - but he's playing his R1 doubles with Floppy. They're in opposite halves of the singles draw, so presumably it's been arranged so that they both play doubles on Sat, singles on Sun.

1930 Court 14 Fleming & Hutchins v Benneteau & Gasquet

Not so simple - Berdych (bottom half) is playing Sat but his partner Stepanek (top half!) isn't, so Stepanek will have to play both singles and doubles on Sun.

Stepanek's opponent is Davydenko - and he also doesn't play either singles or doubles on Sat - but HIS partner, Youzhny, IS playing his singles.

So basically it is random (or a mess....)

Balls can be "tampered" with. There used to be this theory in Rugby League when Yorkshire teams were drawn against Lancashire teams but then in the semis they seemed to kept apart. So, for example if Wigan and St Helens and Leeds and Hull were in the semi finals it always seemed that Wigan played Saints and Leeds played Hull. This ensured a Final for fans on either side of Pennines. There was talk of hot balls and freezing cold balls....conspiracies raged. I'm not being cynical but....will now avoid libel!!

Rugby League fixing balls.... next you will be suggesting they even change the change of the round ball! :)

I can't see why - we are merely saying that these things are possible. Just as it is possible that certain players are given favourable court times - I'm not suggesting that this happens -merely that it could. All pure conjecture of course!

Any flagbearers who are in the tennis event have their R1 matches scheduled for Sunday.

However, it appears the GB team weren't given a choice ... report on the BBC now (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19013470)

Britain's Olympic tennis team have been told they are not permitted to attend the London 2012 opening ceremony.

The eight-strong squad, some of whom planned to take part, were informed of the decision by email on Friday.
A British Olympic Association spokesman told BBC Sport: "It is a choice made by each sport team leader together with the athletes.

I know the majority don't care for Fed and heaven knows I do not want him to win Gold either but is it not just possible that he actually wanted to give Stan the chance to carry the flag? After all they are friends and without Stan, Fed would not be the proud owner of an Olympic gold already. I actually think it's quite fitting that Stan gets his moment, whatever the circumstances that brought it about and he certainly looks delighted here (https://twitter.com/stanwawrinka/status/228809489103609856/photo/1)

Court 4 isn't being used for main draw play and is designated for practice only.
Here's a map (http://www.london2012.com/mm/Document/Documents/Venue/01/24/20/59/KDVENUEWIMTennis_Neutral.pdf) of the grounds at Wimbledon showing the courts/facilities for the Olympics.

Tennis will be covered on 3 channels today.

They will be Sky channels 453, 454 and 470 (these are Olympic channels 4, 5 and 21).

They are showing court 18 (Hewitt) on the BBC1 at the moment.

Apparently they renumbered the courts for the olympics and court 18 is now court 4. However the oop on the olympic site and the itf site use the old court numbers.

So, something else they need not have tinkered with ......

Same with the scoreboards on Centre Court. They've brought in those hideous orange things - which flickered on and off yesterday - and parked them in front of the Wimbledon scoreboards which work perfectly well.

But they use the new numbering system when listing the live streams on the BBC, just to confuse everyone.

I am surprised they are not using the court 3 as you can get quite a big audience in there.

Think that's cos the Wimbly scoreboards are sponsored by rolex, whereas the Olympic sponsor seems to be omega!

The other 3, Sky 453, 454, 470 are currently covering Centre Court, Court 1 and Court 2 respectively.

Anyone remember Jaziri from Tunisia at Davis Cup in Bolton?
Wardy beat him in 5 sets ...

Well he's now ranked #79 (career high #69 on 16th July) and just took Isner to a tie-break. The American came through 7'6(1) and it's into the 2nd set.

Can any of the mods tell me if there are 2 Bronze medals awarded in the Olympics tennis - or is there the hated bronze medal playoff ? (I'm getting ahead of myself, I know)

Also - why is there no 'coaching' allowed. Coaches are quite prominent in the badminton, table tennis etc and, of course, they are always allowed in the Davis Cup so it seems strange to note their absence - is it just Wimby tradition ????

There is a bronze medal play off in tennis.

Not sure about why no coaches.

There are Bronze Medal play-off matches - see the timetable here (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1227-OLYMPICS-TENNIS-29-7-5-8-2012-Tournament-Thread-Information-Draws-OOP-s&p=42646&viewfull=1#post42646) in post #1 of this information thread.

ITF Rules for Olympics say no coaching. You'd have to ask the ITF why not ...
Nothing to do with Wimbledon tradition - it's the VENUE that's being used not the AELTC rules.

I was thinking- which other Individual Olympic sports require as much effort to win a medal as the tennis?
There are a few that have 6 rounds but maybe not equivalent to 3 sets of tennis in each round. Rowing? - but they 'only' have 2-3 rounds.
Sailing has 6 races and each can be quite tough. Men's road race - one big 6 hour effort but more of a team sport?
Decathlon / heptathlon- marathon / triathlon - maybe anything that ends in "on"!
Boxing?
Can you compare mental effort in the shooting / archery with other sports?
Which ones have it 'easy'?
