Heather Watson & Laura Robson's rankings jump this week could prove timely. May well end up gettin in Olympic singles if further withdrawals

Hard to say definitively that Watson & Robson are the next singles alternates but, as far as I can see, they are in with a decent chance.

At least Heather has time to zoot back to the UK to sort out her body clock, get some grass court practice, maybe have a day or so 'rest' and be ready for the Olympics which gets underway in 8 days time.
Hopefully taking advantage of any late withdrawal from the singles!

Heather will get into the women's singles if there are any more withdrawals.

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser

Reliably informed that Heather Watson is indeed the next player in if there are any further withdrawals in the Olympic women's singles.

Paul Masterton ‏@gingertwit

@stu_fraser wow that's interesting. Especially if zvonereva is still doubtful. Think hev will make it which would be awesome

Steven ‏@GBtennis

@gingertwit @stu_fraser That's good news, but how do they work it out? Singles ranking at entry cut-off for those who are there for dubs?

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser

@GBtennis @gingertwit They use the latest rankings. I guess they are not using this coming Monday's list then.

Steven ‏@GBtennis

@stu_fraser @gingertwit Oh, I see :-) But just among those already in a team, I assume?

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser

@GBtennis @gingertwit Yes. No one else can be brought in now. Which is why it was very generous of Nadal to withdraw this week.

Paul Masterton ‏@gingertwit

@GBtennis @stu_fraser singles rank of dubs only acceptances as at midnight on 20th july apparently

Fantastic news for Heather. Am I right in thinking that Laura is next on the list?

Sallydaisy
24-07-2012, 20:52
Yes! There had been rumours that Petra Martic would withdraw so initially some people thought Hev had got in because of that. But Alona Bondarenko had withdrawn to be replaced by Hev. So, if Martic does go out (and it's looking very likely) then Laura will get in as next ranked Alt. player AT the game. No country can now bring in extra/replacement players.

david1610
24-07-2012, 21:00

For anyone not clear about how the Alternates might end up in the main draw for the tennis here's an extract from the ITF website here (http://2012.itftennis.com/olympics/news/articles/london-2012-watson-gains-singles-berth-for-gb.aspx).

Great Britain’s Heather Watson has been handed a place in the women’s singles at London 2012 following the news that Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine has been forced to withdraw through injury.

Bondarenko was also scheduled to play in the doubles with her younger sister Kateryna after the pair were granted an ITF Place, but they have had to pull out of the event. Their replacements will be announced in due course.
Watson, who is already set to make her Olympic debut in the doubles with teenager Laura Robson, becomes the third British player in the women’s singles alongside Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong.
That number could increase to four players because Robson, the world No. 91, is next on the alternate list if anyone else pulls out between now and the start of the Olympic Tennis Event on Saturday.

That run at Wimbledon helped the Guernsey native jump to a career high ranking of No. 71 in the latest WTA ranking list, and it came just in time for the Olympics because it put her at the top of the alternate list to replace the next player to withdraw, which was Bondarenko.
The rules for replacing players at the Olympic Tennis Event changed over on Friday night at midnight. Since this time, any replacement must already be on-site and entered into another event to qualify. In this case, Watson was already playing in the doubles and, at No. 71, was the next highest ranked singles player. Before midnight on Friday, players who were not already competing at the Olympics could still be drafted in.

Replacements after July 20th according to ITF ("must already be on-site and entered into another event to qualify"):

Heather Watson (GBR) - replaced Alona Bondarenko
Laura Robson (GBR) - replaced Petra Martic**
Jarmila Gajdošová (AUS)
Casey Dellacqua (AUS)
Anastasia Rodionova (AUS)
Stephanie Dubois (CAN)
Kristina Mladenovic (FRA)
Shuai Zhang (CHN)

** This has yet to be formally announced.

Sallydaisy
25-07-2012, 11:46
Laura's place in the Olympic singles is still uncertain. She'll only get in if Petra Martic is unfit to play and it seems the Croatian players intends to try according to this article.
Page translated on Google (and confirmed to be the case on a couple of other tennis boards).

Petra Martic will still, it seems, according to the latest information go to the Olympic Games in London. Although our best tennis player has a problem with wrist and leg two days ago it seemed that surely will not play in London, after tonight's review appeared in Zagreb is a glimmer of hope.

- It made the checkup and decided to travel to London. When Peter arrives here will have all the necessary care and we'll see whether or not ultimately be able to compete - she is executive director of the Croatian Tennis Association Marina Mihelic.http://slobodnadalmacija.hr/Tenis/tabid/86/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/182081/Default.aspx

Thanks Jay and Vixs - that's wonderful news!!!

This from Barry Flatman - but I'm not sure he's right because the ITF/IOC have within their rules a note to keep players from the same country in separate quarters if there are more than 2 players in an event and playing Safarova would put Laura in the same quarter as Bally ...... so there might yet be a reshuffle of the Ladies Singles draw.
We'll see ... perhaps there's another rule to say they can change their mind.
:p

If there are two (2) players/teams from the same country they shall be
drawn into different halves of the Draw. If there are three (3) or four (4)
players from the same country they shall be drawn into different quarters
of the Draw.

Surprising news from Britain's Elena Baltacha, who had taping on her shins during a first-round victory over Agnes Szavay. The 28-year-old has revealed she will undergo surgery on her right - and possibly left - ankle after the Olympics, which is likely to end her season, and the former British number one admits she might not return to professional tennis after her recovery is complete.

RobWat are now a break up against Kerber/Lisicki having broken the Germans in game 5 and then holding their own serve.

The Germans serving at *2-4 in the 2nd set having lost the first set 1-6 to the Brits.

Sallydaisy
28-07-2012, 19:02
Despite the best efforts of the Baby Brits they didn't manage to take the break points that came their way and the Germans hold. And now they've broken RobWat.
Back on serve at 4-4.

28-07-2012, 19:51
Pity for Heather and Laura having been so close to causing huge upset. However, credit with how they took it to the Germans. Was likely to be tough once it went to the decider Obviously god it was a comfortable win for Bally in the singles and Anne gave a good account of herself even if she eventually faded against Wozniacki.

Sallydaisy
28-07-2012, 20:04
Such a shame RoboWat couldn't have held onto their serve in that 2nd set at *4-3 because it could have made such a difference to the outcome if they'd gone 5-3 up. Fair do's to Kerber/Lisicki (who are the 5th seeds); their superior experience and rankings got them through that match after nearly being bagelled in the first set.

Ah well, the youngsters need to regroup now ready for their singles matches tomorrow!!!

We tried to catch part of this match after leaving Court 2 - unfortunately it was mobbed, and we couldn't get near enough to catch more than a glimpse! At that point Hev & Laura were just about to win the first set, so we had high hopes - but I guess it was inevitable that two players of the calibre of Kerber & Lisicki were going to come back strongly.A shame the girls couldn't pull off a miracle for us, but it sounds like they did us proud anyway :)

It's very annoying isn't it? It baffles me why British commentators can't at least give their home players some credit. I know they are supposed to retain some impartiality but they mostly adopt the reverse discrimination approach.

Heather and Laura are both through their round one matches!

British number one Heather Watson, 20, beats Spaniard Silvia Soler Espinosa 6-2 6-2 to reach the second round of the women's singles, where she will play Maria Kirilenko of Russia.

Watson is joined there by Laura Robson after the 18-year-old overcomes Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to set up a meeting with Maria Sharapova.

Elena Baltacha is about to start her second-round match against Serbia's Ana Ivanovic on Court 18, and plays doubles later with Anne Keothavong.

Shazza through to the gold medal final. I hate to say this but I'm beginning to like her a little, but only on mute.

Serena is creaming Shazza. Another yawnfest. Women's tennis has been really rubbish this week. No one has stepped up to the plate where Serena is concerned.

Maria holding back the tears as she accepts the Silver Medal.

Serena is bouncing around as she takes the Gold Medal.
Only the 2nd woman to hold a Golden Slam (alongside Steffi Graf).

The Stars and Stripes has taken off somewhere over Centre Court!!!!!
Someone is going to be court-martialled for that .........

:smashed:

Oh, and I think Serena's outfit doesn't look right - grey velour top, black joggers and fluorescent yellow trainers? What happened to Team USA's Olympic ceremony outfits?
Surely it should have been Navy, Red and White???

Masha and Vika looked much smarter for the medal ceremony.

Serena's also the only woman to win both doubles and singles gold. Federer will probably be the first man tomorrow if oor Andy doesn't stop him.

Really pleased for Serena! She played fantastic all tournament and is a very deserving winner. It's so amazing what she's achieved in her career - career slams in both singles and doubles, doubles Olympic gold and now singles Olympic gold. Incredible. :)
