Andy Murray opens his Olympic bid with a R1 match against Stanislas Wawrinka.

Muzzah has an 6-4 H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=W367) against the 27yr old Swiss player who won the Doubles Gold medal in Beijing with partner Roger Federer.

Andy and Stan have met on grass once before - at Wimbledon 2009 so the H2H there is 1-0.
It was the British player who came out the winner on that occasion after a marathon 5 set match which ended being the first match played under the new roof. A couple of Andy's earlier losses to Stan came on clay; no surprise given the Swiss learned/trained on that surface. On Hard courts Andy leads 5-2 but one of the losses came at the USO Grand Slam in 2010 in the R32.

Wawrinka lost in R128 at Wimbledon 2012, going out in 5 sets to Jurgen Melzer.
That has been his ONLY grass court match this season .....

Day and time of the match is to be confirmed.
Not yet sure if they split into halves and if so it might be Federers half first i.e. on Saturday and Djokovic's half 2nd i.e. on Sunday - which is when Andy will probably play.
There is no 'middle' Sunday at the Olympics tennis event.

Are the men's games best of three or five sets? Has the last set in the final set got a TB?
Is the ad scoring in the dubs? And is the last 'set' a championship TB?

davech
26-07-2012, 23:14
Mens singles: Best of three, except for the final. No TB in final set.
Doubles: Last set is a CTB. Not sure about advantage rule - I assume they are playing advantage as I haven't seen anything to the contrary.

This is from the ITF Rulebook (http://2012.itftennis.com/media/111275/111275.pdf) for the Olympic Tennis Event.

Scoring System
All matches shall be the best of three sets except for the men's singles final which shall be the best of five sets. The Tie-Break shall operate in every set except the fifth set in the men's singles final and the third set in the other matches (except mixed doubles), when an advantage set shall be played. In the mixed doubles the third set shall be played as a match tie-break (10 points).

Not the easiest draw for Andy, but he seems to thrive when he knows he has to concentrate from the word Go

And maybe that flag was heavy for Stan and 3 hours standing around may have taken their toll

GO Andy GO ALL THE WAY

I just hope that the disappointment from today will not get to Andy tomorrow. He played so well and - hate to say it but - well, it was Jamie who was the weaker of the team. Andy was so animated on court and I just hope that he will be even more determined to get the gold in the singles - although I have the feeling that the doubles was his secret dream.
Ah well  I've shed my tears - onward to tomorrow and a medal

For the first time ever I think I am going to choose to miss an Andy match. I just cant bear to watch if things go wrong for him - he would be devastated.
I've never felt this way but better to miss the match and hear that he has won than sit wringing my hands scared that he will go out in the first round - not sure that he would ever recover.

Of course I wont last out, I'll have to have a peep at the score :sofa:

Come on Andy :gold:

I've made the same decision! I'm feeling very down and fragile for several reasons; my elder dog has been diagnosed with cancer over the last week ..... really needed a bit of cheer yesterday and of course didn't get it; I think I would cut my throat if I had to watch him go out today; just feel that everything that can go wrong is doing so right now so no great hopes for today. Sorry to be such a wet blanket and I hope he has massive support (not even sure about that in this miserable country) and I truly wish him all the luck in the world because he deserves far more than he gets but I'm in bits today .....

I have to say this but I always feel saddened when people (fans/commentators) stick the knife in Jamie.
Yes he was weaker, of course he was. But it was Andy's shot that went into the net on Match point.
Their energy was so good - and Andy was such an encouraging force.
I am a fan of BOTH boys, through good and bad times - and I think it's such a shame that Jamie's Olympics are over now.

Let's hope that the flickering screens debacle (along with unused tickets etc) doesn't detract from what should be a juicy match here.
Fill those seats with Brits!!!

Andy holds for 1-0.

He's getting into Stans game already and it goes to deuce.
Ad to Andy after a DF from Stan, saved so back to deuce.

Then a great rally at the net which Stan squeaks out of and gets Advantage.
And another good rally with Andy finding the backline twice forcing an error from Stan who hit wide.
Deuce

An Ace from Stan and he's got Ad again.
Andy at his returning best to save that game point.
Deuce.

Stan eventually holds - come on Andy!!!

He looked a bit jaded in the second set - maybe the excitement from yesterday took its toil- he was very pumped up yest.

Good win against a worthy opponent - well done Andy! Great to hear the Andy chants ringing around Wimbledon - we could do with more of that.

p.s. Anyone know why I can't get my smileys to work?

Well done Andy! In control throughout. :swingin::swingin:

I like how Tim Henman basically ignored Andrew Cotter's summation that "Andy wasn't at his best" and said what a great performance it was. That is the positive of having ex-players as commentators.

I kept the stream on and notice Andy has just left the court, did he give an interview?

Well done Andy!
Could not watch. My 12 year-old was (for the first time) being threated in a young pre-teen website which of course required dad to take over from the tennis fan.

Thank you. We reported the person (she threatened my daughter would end up dead if she did not give up her password). Unfortunately my daughter has now (temporarily) deleted her Facebook account as she got a scare and she uses it a lot to chat with her friends (for good or bad). Luckily I must have done something right as a dad cos she came to me straightaway and we also had a chat with her mum (I'm divorced) to decide what to do.
She was very touched about your concern! Thank you.

A really nasty thing to happen David but, as you say, thank goodness she had the sense to tell you about it. Social media is a real nightmare for kids - they think they can cope but in many cases they can't. I think there should be a minimum age limit for Facebook.

It's tricky.... she has been on for a year or so with all her friends from school and scouts and so on and of course they all put their age as older. We have parented on the principle of "know" rather than "no", and at least this meant she understood what was happening and came to one of us. And I teach courses related to technology so have always been aware of how (1) public and (2) permanent the Internet is (once one copy is out there....). But we are all still learning... I emailed a uni. prof. a couple of years ago to ask if she had any more recent articles on a subject and a few weeks later her hubby replied that she had passed away - I had not thought about that as it is all still so relatively recent.... oh well, on with the tennis and thanks again for your support and concern.

That's awful. The one thing that always makes me wary, even as an adult is how people can tap into a real bullying persona from behind the relative "anonymity" of a User ID - child OR adult.
They think it's alright to be as rude, obnoxious, threatening as they like and believe there are no consequences.

I hope your daughter gets over the scare.

I know how you must feel. I dread the day it happens to us. So much in the American press about cyber bullying. At least people are more aware of it now and sympathetic. I always worry about FB. Don't want to look over her shoulder so I check on it discreetly. It's lovely you and her have such a close trusting relationship.

Thank you it has! A friend had invited me for a bit of lunch as I'm so down and whilst playing with the food, I resisted her requests to try and find some news on the match. When I got home I was desperate,I found the match just finishing and the result did bring a smile to my face. A friend said she didn't realise it was Andy's fate as world no 4 to win this year's US Open (following Australian won by world no 1, French by world no 2 and Wimbledon by world no 3); she was hoping for Olympic gold; I want him to win both!

:grouphug:for your daughter David. Hope she's OK. Getting back to the tennis as you said.....good match against potentially tough opponent. Thought Andy played well with not too many errors and some great serves and returns. I too noticed Tim quickly applauding Andy and ignoring the comment made re his play. Well done Tim. Well, that's his first Olympic win...here's to many more.:GBflag:

Just to say thank you for all the good wishes to myself and my daughter. I feel a bit guilty that I seem to have ended up taking the thread off topic for a while but I think everyone understands that I shared in the moment. And Andy won! :)

PS Presumably Andy is the player who has played most under the roof on centre court?

I don't really think you need to apologize :) Glad everything is ok now :)

I can't remember any other player who has been under the roof as often as Andy!
