Welcome t3nnisfan.

As things stand, the relative uniformity of the ATP picks does mean that you would be able to take part.

However, based on the results so far, in order to make things a completely level playing field, I've just had to tweak your predictions ever so slightly. I've aalso had to do that for a similar late-comer at CC.

Otherwise, all good.

BOTP ATP Roundup: Day 01

Well, there is some similarity in both the Men’s and Women’s results – and the BOTP predictions pretty much reflect this! For Stosur, read Berdych, for example. The daily pick rate for ATP was 65.8%, compared with 65.9% for the WTA side of BOTP.

As with the WTA side of things, it is the picking of the surprise results that has created an early front runner. lizzim made an inspired pick of Giraldo beating Harrison – the only BOTPer to do so – and helped her into first place with an impressive 13 correct picks out of 16.

As with the WTA, only one match caught everyone out, which was the Berdych defeat. Also, SallyDaisy was the only BOTPer to pick Jaziri to beat Lu, who I think beat one Andy Murray in Beijing in 2008.

I should mention that we now have 2 additional folk taking part in BOTP – so welcome to regular BOTPer tlim and new BOTPer t3nnisfan. Thankfully it was relatively straightforward to include them, even with the shock results – for example they, along with everyone else, had Berdy making the quarter finals.

It’s a very close-knit table, with just 2 points separating the top 13 from 2nd place onwards. A bit like an early lap of a Olympic long-distance race – early days.

BOTP ATP Results: Day 02

[2] N Djokovic (SRB) d F Fognini (ITA) 67(7) 62 62 (100-0)
[3] A Murray (GBR) d S Wawrinka (SUI) 63 63 (100-0)
[4] D Ferrer (ESP) d V Pospisil (CAN) 64 64 (100-0)
J Nieminen (FIN) d S Devvarman (IND) 63 61 (100-0)
[5] J Tsonga (FRA) d T Bellucci (BRA) 67(5) 64 64 (94-6)
[15] K Nishikori (JPN) d B Tomic (AUS) 76(4) 76(4) (53-47)

BOTP Roundup: Day 02

Well, the rain certainly dampened things on the ATP side, with just 6 matches completed. So, not too much to report on, really!

As you can see by the percentage picks for each of the results, pretty much everyone got either 5 or 6 correct picks, depending on whether they opted for Nishikori or Tomic in the 50:50 match. Only 1 BOTPer picked fewer, with DaveArneRiise opting for a mega upset in the Pospisil v Ferru Match.

Even with just 6 points to play for on day 02, there was still a fair amount of movement in the BOTP table – plenty of musical chairs. lizzim remained in pole position, but now shares her lead with liam valid and Northernlight/ Super8.

But – with only 22 points out of the possible 120 on offer in the pick ‘em, and, Berdy aside, everyone has their latter stages picks intact – so categorically remains early days.

S Darcis (BEL) d S Giraldo (COL) 67(4) 64 64 (0-0)

BOTP Roundup: Day 03

Well, 4 of the 10 remaining matches had 100% correct picks – although it was close for comfort for both Baggy and Floppy! Cilic, Gasquet and Rusty Hewitt had a good amount of BOTP majority behind them. Unsurprisingly, the Pico v Baby-faced Goffin split the BOTP vote somewhat, with a good 41% backing the young protégé from Justine Henin’s tennis academy.

An against-the-grain result certainly was Grass tennis-averse Kolya’s win over RadStep – only 18% of BOTPers went for that – a handy pick for Jaysee, DaveArneRiise and NL/ S8.

Well, Blaz Kavcic’s win over Vishnu Vardhan served us a BOTP bagel, i.e. on-one picked the Slovak to win. This was unsurprising as he was supposed to be playing Phil Kohlschreiber who pulled out with a hamstring injury. Vishnu is partnering Leander Paes in the men’s doubles – has a big serve, and judging by today’s match, prone to the odd unforced error.

Moving on to the 8 second round matches played today, well all 6 of the seeded players playing won, which all had either unanimous or majority BOTP backing – with the notable exception of Gilles Simon, who won a 50:50 BOTP pick match with Grigor Dmitrov

The Istomin v Muller match did have some BOTP points riding on it, but just 18% for the Uzbek and 12% for the Lux(embourgian?). This was a handy pick for Big Al, fah51 & liam valid. The rest of us had gone for Verdasco..

The Darcis/ Giraldo match was a BOTP double-bagel – i.e. not one person picked either of these players to win this match! We’d all picked the Berdman for that one..

Overall, it was a mixed day for the BOTP folk, with an overall pick rate for the day of just 67%. It was a good day for tlim and NL/ S8 who both picked up 20 points out of the 26 on offer. tlim moved up 8 places to 3rd, and NL/S8 gained sole occupation of pole position, with lizzim just a single point behind in 2nd place, and t3nnis fan and liam sharing 3rd place with tlim. Linda and Manaus also both had a good day, second top-scoring with 19 points from 26 and moving up 5 places each to 6th equal.

At the other end of the table, nevets and DaveArneRiise both had a rough day, with Dave taking a bit of a tumble of 7 places, and nevets taking occupancy of the BOTP basement. He has good company in vivahate and Sally too.. for now, at least!

In spite of the movements in the table, just 6 points separate the top 11. Plenty of scope for more BOTP musical chairs, for sure!

Hello again,

Well, today saw the completion of the remaining 8 second round matches - thankfully the weather didn't prevent the tournament from remaining on track! Here are the results and BOTP tables:

Singles - Second Round
[3] A Murray (GBR)Êd J Nieminen (FIN) 62 64 (100-0)
[5] J Tsonga (FRA)Êd M Raonic (CAN) 63 36 25-23 (100-0)
[2] N Djokovic (SRB)Êd A Roddick (USA) 62 61 (94-6)
[4] D Ferrer (ESP)Êd B Kavcic (SLO) 62 62 (88-0)
F Lopez (ESP) d [9] J Monaco (ARG) 64 64 (59-29)
[15] K Nishikori (JPN)Êd N Davydenko (RUS) 46 64 61 (41-0)
L Hewitt (AUS) d [13] M Cilic (CRO) 64 75 (29-71)
M Baghdatis (CYP) d [16] R Gasquet (FRA) 64 64 (12-82)

Unfortunately I don't have time to write a daily report - and will now be away until Thursday night, so won't be able to provide further updates until then. I will be back up to speed with all 8 matches from tomorrow and the 4 QF matches on Thursday, on Thursday night..

Some very quick thoughts though..

I guess that Gasquet defeat was the biggest shock of the day? Well done to James4578 and t3nnisfan for picking Baggy though!

Well done also to Rusty Hewitt for a fabulous win over Queen's champ cilic. This was an excellent pick by DAR, Jaysee, nevets, tlim and vivahate..

And the JWT v Raonic match - just unreal.. A Frenchman and a tall North American in an epic match again...

BOTP Roundup: Day 05

Well, in the round 16 matches on the men’s side, we had 11 of the 16 seeds competing – and each and every quarter final berth was taken by a seeded player – 5 of the top 8, no less.

Those top 5 were picked pretty much everyone, so a straight 15 points there. The only dissenter was vivahate who picked Dmitrov ahead of JMDP and A-Rod against Djoko.

At the other end of the scale, only one BOTPer predicted Nishigori’s win over 88% pick Ferru – James4578, take a bow!!

Similarly only 1 BOTPer predicted Almagro to make the quarters – this time it is SallyDaisy’s turn to take the plaudits. Bravo Sally! The rest of us picked Berdych.

So – nearly all of us pretty much had the same 7 of 8 quarter finalists. The only match where opinion was divided was Isner v Tipsarevic – which was a straight 47% v 47% split! In theory, Isner ought to be such a dangerous grass court player – but I don’t think that, prior to this tournament he had ever won 2 consectuive matches on grass. However, he finally got over that barrier, this time.

So, again an ok day for BOTP folk – oddly, the ATP pick rate is lower than the WTA one – usually it’s the other way around! James4578’s inspired pick of Kei helped him to top score for the day – and as with the WTA side of things, he has picked 7 of the 8 quarter finalists, but in this case, the only person to do so – so motored up 8 places to equal 3rd with cazza99. Yay james!!

Remarkably, up until now Berdych had been the only semi finalist that anyone had lost – that only vivahate had predicted that. However, with Ferru’s loss, 77% of folk lost their first semi finalist..

All of those with 6 correct picks out of 8 moved up the table, including t3nnisfan, whose pick of Isner moved him above Super8/NL into pole position. At the other end of the scale, Vivahate was the only BOTPer with fewer than 5 remaining quarter finalists, with just the 3 picks, and thus retained his residency in the BOTP basement.

So, now into the quarter finals, and with everyone still having a good quota of picks remaining, there is still everything to play for. How will the quarter finals shape the way that BOTP develops?

BOTP Results/ Statistics: Day 06

Singles - Quarter-finals
[1] R Federer (SUI) d [10] J Isner (USA) 64 76(5) (100-0)
[3] A Murray (GBR) d [11] N Almagro (ESP) 64 61 (94-0)
[2] N Djokovic (SRB) d [5] J Tsonga (FRA) 61 75 (88-12)
[8] J del Potro (ARG) d [15] K Nishikori (JPN) 64 76(4) (24-0)

BOTP Roundup: Day 06

Many of the BOTP pick ‘ems on the ATP side seem to involve deciding if all 4 of the top 4 players will make the semis, or perhaps whether just(?) 3 of the top 4 will make it. With Rafa absent (and I think that he will be missing some of the US Summer HC swing too?), nearly everyone still picked 3 of the top 4 to make the semis – and they were absolutely right! Only 1 BOTPer didn’t pick Mr Murray (vivahate who picked Berdman), and 2 BOTPers didn’t pick Djoko (Viva and DAR picked JWT).

Those that didn’t back Ferru to make the semis reaped the benefits of Kei taking out the Iron Man (Ferru is Iron in Spanish, isn’t it?) in the previous round, as they all predicted that JMDP would make the semi finals. Just 4 BOTPers managed this: DAR, James4578, SallyDaisy and nevets. A very handy 4 points gained – bravo!

All but 4 BOTPers therefore picked 3 of the 4 semi finalists. Poor Viva was one of the exceptions, with just 1 of his 4 semi finalists remaining. The other 3 exceptions were of course James, Sally and nevets who successfully picked all 4 semi finalists!

Unsurprisingly these 3 all made very handy progress up the BOTP table. James moved up 2 places to take top spot from t3nnisfan, with a lead of just a single point. SallyDaisy moved up 6 places to 5th, and nevets moved up 4 places to 12th equal, putting quite a distance between him and viva in the BOTP basement.

At this stage of the tournament, we have just 3 matches left. 16 points, up for grabs. Who will grab them, I wonder?

Hello!

Running a bit behind with this - here are the semi final results and BOTP table after day 07

Singles - Semi-finals
[1] R Federer (SUI) d [8] J del Potro (ARG) 36 76(5) 19-17
[3] A Murray (GBR) d [2] N Djokovic (SRB) 75 75

I think that the many movements in the BOTP table basically hinge on whether you picked a Federer v Murray final or not!!

Everyone picked at least one of the finalists, mainly because all but one BOTPer picked Roger to make the final. The sole dissenter on this front was Jaysee, who picked Ferru to reach the final.

In the other half of the draw, there was a split between Andy Murray (64%) and Novak Djokovic (29%), plus 6% for Jo Wilf Tsonga, courtesy of VivaHate. I had expected nearly all of the Andy picks to be from am.com - but the 46% was pretty evenly split across both boards!

So.. a fair amount of musical chairs - notably cazza99 and SallyDaisy moving up 2 places each to 2nd and 3rd place, maintaining pressure on James who still retained pole position. Such was the high percentage pick for the finalists that anything other than picking both finalists meant taking a wee tumble.

I will need to go out just now - will round up BOTP on both ATP and WTA side tomorrow evening..

BOTP ATP Report: Final

Singles - Gold Medal Match
[3] A Murray (GBR) d [1] R Federer (SUI) 62 61 64 (35-47)

Singles - Bronze Medal Match
[8] J Potro (ARG) d [2] N Djokovic (SRB) 75 64

Well, this was quite a momentous win for Andy Murray, becoming the first Brit to win a singles tennis gold in 10 Olympics where tennis has featured. Given that there was a gap of 64 years between the 1924 Paris Olympics, where tennis last featured – and the 1988 Seoul Olympics when it was readmitted, it made for a total of 104 years since the last gold medal, won by a certain Josiah Ritchie in the London Olympics in 1908!!

In fact, 1908 was the last year since GB won a male singles medal of any colour! A fabulous achievement by Andy Murray.

It was a fabulous achievement that was predicted by 35% of BOTP folk. 47% had picked Federer, and the remaining 18% had picked Djokovic. Given that all 3 of them were in the frame by the semi finals, it is fair to say that everyone backed a real contender for the gold medal.

Andy’s win meant for quite a change in the BOTP table. Whilst SallyDaisy finished in last place in the WTA BOTP, her fortunes were reversed completely in the ATP BOTP, moving up 2 places to claim gold medal by just the one point. Well done Sally!!

As with the ATP BOTP, the silver and bronze medallists both finished with the same points. However, splitting the two was a more straightforward prospect. lizzim’s prediction of Andy to win the final meant that she finished with 47 correct predictions and won silver medal, with one more correct pick than James, who claimed bronze. James would have won gold medals in both ATP and WTA BOTPs had Roger won in the final. However, I doubt James will be too fussed by that!

Everyone else picking Andy to win had a strong finish to the BOTP tournament. Manaus also finished with the same points as lizzim and James, but with just the one correct pick than James, therefore finished in 4th place. With just the 1 point separating the top 4, it really was a very tight finish!!

Strong finishes also for DaveArneRiise and nevets, moving up 4 places to 5th equal. Jaysee’s faith in Andy also meant a move up 6 places to a creditable 8th. At the other end of the table, Vivahate occupied the BOTP basement by some distance.

So, that concludes the ATP Olympics BOTP for London 2012. Many thanks to everyone who took part. I hope that you enjoyed it!

Well done Sally!:clap: Great stuff Lizzim too! Satisfied with my performance, obviously much happier with Andy winning rather than me! Suppose my excuse is that I didn't want to jinx things! Thanks for all your efforts Super8! Suppose the big upsets were Berdych falling at the first hurdle and Ferrer going out in the last 16. I didn't pick Ferrer to go that far but thought I was taking a bit of a risk there. Whilst I seen the Tsonga/Raonic thriller at Wimbledon I'd place the Murray/Baggy match where I was also courtside above that.
