View Full Version : OLYMPICS DOUBLES R1: Murrays out of the doubles as Melzer/Peya win 5'7, 7'6(6), 7'5

Andy and Jamie have drawn Austrian pair Melzer/Peya in R1.
Let's go boys!!!!!
:GBflag:
Oh dear again, not the best draw! Whilst I worry about Andy playing singles and doubles, I know he will want to do well for GB as one half of the Murray Bros.

Hi LC - have moved your post into the match discussion thread.
They're scheduled for 17.30hrs but as they're 4th on Court 2 the match won't end up being at a specific time.

For those who can't get it on tv, this livestream is claiming to be showing Court 2 matches including doubles: http://http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/live-video/p00w2rtr Personally, I'll believe it when I see it!
Edit - except I won't see it anyway, I have to go out at about the time Andy and Jamie are due on.

I will have to find a stream for the doubles match later since I'm in Germany right now and it doesn't look like they are going to show Tennis on TV today. They haven't so far at least.
Either way, he will go into the match as the favourite.

It follows on from the Ladies match currently on Court 2 - approx 5pm per the thread title here. (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1260-OLYMPICS-DOUBLES-R1-Andy-amp-Jamie-Murray-v-Peya-Melzer.-Sat-28th-July-Court-2-approx-5pm)

Andy and Jamie could be on a lot sooner than we thought (or the organisers who forget that tennis matches don't finish dead on 2hrs!).
The prior Ladies singles match is into a 2nd set already and could be over in 30mins!
Muzzahs possibly at 4pm.

Hantuchova serving to stay in the 2nd set or if she holds Li Na will probably serve it out.
So, assuming it goes to a 3rd, the Murrays could be on around 4.30pm.

Sky channel 469 is covering court 2 at the moment. Hopefully they will be showing Jamie and Andy's match.

Castle is covering Federer so we should be free of him :)
The Radio Times does say BBC1 will be covering tennis and archery between 5.00 and 7.00 pm. It says singles though, but you never know. Maybe they will switch over to part of the Andy/Jamie match after Federer's.
I'm using the BBC website so that I can watch two things at once, one on each half of the screen (it's a wide screen). At the moment I have Fed on the left half and Andy & Jamie on the right half. Earlier I had the road race on the left half and tennis on the right half.

So close but with Jamie struggling on his serve and returns it was always going to be tight. Seeing how much it meant to Andy I hope it doesn't have an adverse effect on his singles.
Out of interest both Melzer and Peya attended the opening ceremony until the wee small hours and are staying at the Olympic village. I sometimes think there's too much emphasis put on this preparation lark, the inspiration from the ceremony might have been more beneficial. Lopez and Ferrer who won today were also there.

Jamie didn't hold one of his service games in the 3rd set. Damn. Now go Andy!!
Andy will be gutted for Jamie but he couldn't win it on his own - Jamie really didn't play well today, particularly when he was under pressure. At least Andy can now concentrate on the singles.

Yeah Jamies serve was all over the place very disappointing.
Andy has the singles though!
It's a shame that Andy and Jamie lost. :( Andy played well but unfortunately Jamie was struggling too much on serve. It was a tough draw seeing how Melzer has won Wimbledon doubles before.

I agree - Nole tweeted today about how it's an experience that he'll never forget and how he feels extra motivated for the games now. I think it's a shame that the GB tennis team weren't able to attend, especially for players like Heather and Laura who haven't had the chance to march in the ceremony before. I think it's a decision that should have been left to the individual competitors.

That's what I thought. It might even be an advantage during the later stages (assuming he gets that far), since both Djoko and Fed play doubles. Maybe we should hope they both get far. ;)
I wonder what impact this has on who plays mixed doubles. Jamie has the experience but he's not in the best form and given some of the top men who have committed to playing mixed you'd have to say Andy has the best chance (with Laura Robson) of all the available GB men if they want to win a medal, remember only 3 wins required to do so.
david1610
28-07-2012, 18:37
Given Andy's rather so-so performance in Beijing, I do not think there was any question of him attending the opening this time round.
If Jamie was under par (did not have a stream) then duty done..... and Andy is experienced enough surely to focus on the singles now.
As regards mixed doubles, given Heather's recent run of doubles' form, is it cut and dried she is playing with e.g. Ross or is she available to play with Andy?
Mind you, if (and that can be quite a big if) Laura is in a good serving mode, and she has to get balls back from her side of the next without having to do a lot of lateral running, she should also be a good partner!

Agreed - Andy was a class above big bro today and the Austrians knew that as they kept targetting Jamie. Gutted for them both but at least Andy's had a workout and can now put all his efforts into the singles.

In a way I'm not too disappointed they lost as it gives Andy a better chance in the singles. Jamie was hopeless, he kept being broken in the 3rd. Good luck Andy

Yes, they certainly were! There were two or three occasions where, despite how careful you are about not calling out during play, you just can't help the occasional gasp or sort of strangled squeak, when you think the point is over then it's not quite :)
There were some stunning shots from Jamie too, to be fair, just not enough when needed, and unfortunately he was very vulnerable on serve.
Was very disappointed - so close.

Will Andy play in mixed doubles, he would be great with Laura!
I think there's quite a few potential teams who'd have a much higher combined ranking.
it's only a 16 pair draw and can only be made from players already in the singles and doubles events.
I could see Hev partnering Colin or Ross; not sure if Laura would have a high enough rank.
As for Andy - he's got quite a task ahead to get through his half of the draw to try and win a gold medal.
What a shame yesterday, it was obvious how much they wanted it, for each other more than anything.
But the Austrians totally exposed Jamie in the third set and it was painful to watch, every serve they sent to his forehand, and everything else they seemed to just hit at him. Whenever the ball went near Andy he dispatched it, he was an absolute machine yesterday.
I really hope he's not upset today, because although stan might not be having his best year, Andy will need to be on his A game right from the off. Tense.
