View Full Version : OLYMPICS - MIXED DBLES, 1/4s: Robson/Murray thru' to Semi-Finals after 3 set win over Stosur/Hewitt

Sallydaisy

Andy and Laura take on Sam Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt in the Quarter Finals of the Mixed.
This will probably be tougher than yesterday's match.

Stosur and Hewitt have lots of experience; Hewitt chases everything down and Stosur has a lot more experience of playing doubles than either Andy or Laura.

Hopefully the Brits with younger legs will be able to fend off the Aussies and make through to medal contention in this event.

The match is billed as 4th on Court 1 but the time is very uncertain.

Tight match but certainly a good win for Andy/Laura,well done! Hopefully Laura's serve will be in better working order today. Possibly Andy may not have much of a break after the singles though which of course could be a tough one.

Sallydaisy

Andy first has to play his Semi-Final match against Nole - 3rd on Centre any time from 3pm onwards.
Much depends on how long the first Mens and Ladies Semi's take.

He's then going to need "suitable rest" - usually an hour - before playing with Laura.
So if things run late on Centre and he's not in action until nearly 4pm for singles and he and Nole go to 3 sets then this doubles match could start as late as 7pm.
Or 5pm if everything on Centre is over quickly!!!
;)

Here's the OOP for the 2 show-courts:-

CENTRE COURT - 12noon start
MS-SF: [1]Federer v [8]Del Potro
LS-SF: [1]Azarenka v [4]S.Williams
MS-SF: [2]Djokovic v [3]Murray
LD-SF:[3]Kirilenko/Petrova v Williams/Williams

COURT ONE - 12noon start
LD-SF: [1] Huber/Raymond(USA) v Hvalackova/Hradecka(CZE)
LS-SF: [3]Sharapova v[14]Kirilenko
MD-SF: Ferrer/Lopez v [2] Llodra/Tsonga(FRA)
MX-QF: Robson/Murray(GBR) v Stosur/Hewitt(AUS)

Might it end up being held over? Not sure if that would be a good or a bad thing.

Pretty bad it it was held over I think. Andy will have 2 singles matches to play regardless of what happens in today's SF. Assuming that Laura and Andy win the QF they would have to play every day so if it was held over he would have an even more packed schedule than it already is.

I think the outcome of this match might depend on his performance against Novak. If he wins his Singles match they are likely to win this one as well. That's my prediction. :)

I'm really nervous.

Yes a lot will depend on Andy's SF but of course even more may depend on Laura's serving at the critical moments.

Andy/Laura's mixed quarters postponed.
They'll have to play 1/4's first and, if they get through that, the Semi's later.

I'm not too happy about Andy possibly having to play two matches (however short) tomorrow while Fed relaxes and recovers from his (admittedly tiring) semi.

I guess the first one could be instead of a couple of hours of practice which he'd probably be doing anyway.
The 2nd ....... just have to wait and see. It shouldn't be too late and 'tis to be hoped he's fit enough.

Don't like the way it's all panned out either - British weather!!! The rain delays forced the mixed schedule to be thrown into disarray and there's nothing to do but play on.

Might be better for Andy to play tomorrow rather than started getting fretty about Sunday?

Any road up:

Centre Court 12noon
MD-QF: Laura Robson/Andy Murray(GBR) v Sam Stosur/Lleyton Hewitt(AUS)

Court One, 3pm approx
Sabine Lisicki/Chris Kas v MD-QF: Laura Robson/Andy Murray(GBR) OR Sam Stosur/Lleyton Hewitt(AUS)

Alis
03-08-2012, 20:45
It could work in Andy's favour - there's no chance of the matches going long because the third set is a match tie break. He'll have no time to think about Sunday and if they win he'll be on a high.

Linda
03-08-2012, 21:02
Yes, it's good, because of the match tiebreak they'll be short matches - just like a practice, really.

david1610
03-08-2012, 22:10
All in all, I think this will be positive as long as it does not rain and he has to be there until late evening.
And Laura plays her part.

Oh and we cannot blame Roger because Andy decided to play the mixed doubles and he is not.

I thnk he'll be fine, he's only had a two setter today - compared with the marathon in the other match. In regular tourney's they often have to play back to back, and dubs isn't exactly loads of running.

Though if Laura keeps serving like that, it won't bother them

It was raining heavily earlier this morning and there's a whopping storm headed to Wimbledon around 13.00 according to the BBC's weather chart (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/6691839). So, precautionary but probably necessary to get this match over and not disrupt the 14.00 start for the Ladies Final.

The rain is forecast to clear away quickly.

Bear in mind that match has probably been the equivalent to his normal 'off-day' training regime.
He's not had to do much running and the points were quite short.

The 2nd match today is less convenient in the sense of tiredness but it shouldn't be played too late - 3.30'ish start is likely after the Ladies Singles Bronze match and then Mens Doubles Bronze match.

So pleased for them both - but we are getting a bit of a fixture pile-up. Whatever the result later today they will still have 2 matches to play - either the final or the bronze medal match. And since the medal ceremony cant be done until all matches are completed they will want to get them through.

Just hope this all doesn't take its toll on Andy although he seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself

I'm pleased but a bit anxious that they've won - I'd have been relieved but sad if they'd lost. If they could just play the rest of the dubs after the singles final tomorrow it would be fine. Finish the tennis on Monday instead, they always do it at the US Open. ;) I'm primarily concerned about Andy dipping too often into his reservoir of emotional energy. Sorry, I don't want to be a misery guts, I just so want Andy to win tomorrow!

Nope, it'll be just the 1 Mixed match tomorrow, as you've said it's either the final or the bronze medal match, not both. If they win their 2nd match today then tomorrow Andy will have to play the Mens Final at 12.00, then there's the Ladies Doubles Final and finally the Mixed Doubles Final.

I understand, from seeing something on twitter earlier in the week, that the Olympics must finish on Sunday at Wimbledon.
