View Full Version : CANADIAN MASTERS (TORONTO) - R2: Andy Caramelises Onion 6'1, 6'3

It's back to the day job after all the excitement of the Olympics and winning the Gold Medal.
Andy's R2 opponent must be sooooooo looking forward to this match up.
:tennis:
Flavio Cipolla came through R1 with a 2 sets win over fellow Qualifier Jurgen Zopp 6'1, 6'2. The Italian is ranked #97 at the moment (CH #70 April 2012), joined the senior tour in 2003 (2 years ahead of Andy), is now 28 yrs old and hasn't won a title.
The H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=C723) is 0-0 on the main ATP Tour. However, Chippy has played Andy once before - and lost 6'2, 3'6, 5'7 on clay, on home soil at the Rome 2004 Futures event.
Andy is scheduled to play this R2 match (he had a R1 Bye) on Wednesday 8th August.
He'll be joined in Toronto by coach Lendl who might want to see how Andy's game is shaping up on hard courts and discuss tactics for Canada, Cincy and the USO.
No gold medals here but any advance on 10 points would be a bonus!
:jitterbug:
I think Cipolla will probably look at this as the chance of a lifetime - Andy will be coming down off a high after winning Olympic Gold, and won't have had a lot of time to adjust to the hard courts. Still, given the circumstances, it's about as good a match-up as any of us could have hoped for - let's hope Andy can keep the winning streak going all the way to the US Open final!! :D
Take care... :)

No official source as yet but word is that Del Potro has with drawn with 'fatigue'.
EDIT: the source is an Argentinian journalist
Pablo @PabloStecco (https://twitter.com/PabloStecco) Del Potro se reĂșne hoy con las autoridades del M 1000 Toronto para anunciarles que tiene pensado no participar del mismo por cansancio.

Bit naughty 'cos he's entered into the doubles as well ...

Now I'm hearing that Juan will play ... hum ho.
Has Andy actually officially confirmed he's playing?
In every interview I've seen or heard he's been very careful with his words. It either been "I'm scheduled to..." or "the plan is..." or "we'll see..."
Sallydaisy
07-08-2012, 14:14
Well, he's in the draw until or unless he and the TD state otherwise. If he isn't going to play he sure as heck can't say so to any journalists at the moment or he'd be in a lot of trouble with both TD and ATP.
Given all the publicity over the last few days there's been more scrutiny over what he'll be doing so he's being asked a lot about Canada and has to come up with a stock answer. The same applies to most of the top guys headed to Toronto - hence the conflicting information ref DelPotro and the same is happening with Nole too.
Like it or not, and the schedule is certainly difficult, the guys need to get some matches under their belts ahead of the US Open and Toronto is Andy's only chance to play matches under the watchful eye of Lendl. They need that because apparently Lendl won't be in Cincy so there might be a discussion between the 2 as to what Andy does but no-one is likely to be privy to that.
All we know is that he could have opted to withdraw before the draw was made and didn't and he's said the intent is to play in Toronto. I think he's being cagey just to shut the journos up!
This is an extract from the Evening Standard (and in other press):
The plan is to go there and play,” Murray said in the wake of what he described as the biggest victory of his career. “Tennis has its rules and I’ll be there, for sure. Whether I play or not, I’ll have to see how my body feels on Tuesday.”With the US Open starting in 21 days time, Murray may well decide that he would be better advised to take it easy this week after playing 11 matches in singles and doubles during the Olympic tournament. Toronto is followed immediately by another Masters event in Cincinnati, where the Scot is the defending champion.
“I have to be careful over the next two weeks not to do too much and make sure I pace myself going in there, because it’s been a long couple of months already,” Murray said.
One of the reasons Murray is keen to go to Toronto, where several other top players have pulled out, is that he has made arrangements to work there with Ivan Lendl. The Scot has not seen his coach since Wimbledon, though he has been talking to him on the phone.
Just have to wait and see ..........
If he's up for it there's an opportunity to more easily bag 1000 points here than in Cincy where there will be fewer top name withdrawals. He's defending only 10 here but 1000 in Cincy so banking 1010 one way or another would be very useful.

Sounds like a good way for Andy and Lendl to get together. Even without a win Andy could get some points to cover not going all the way in cincy. Yes it would be even better if he won both :) No1 here we come...........
Madeline
07-08-2012, 17:43
I think if he tried to win both he would run out of steam for the USO. Remember the back end of last year when he played 3 weeks in a row in Asia and had to pull out of the WTF? Add to that the back problem - he said he was having injections to see him through Wimbledon and the Olympics. I'm happy to wait for that rise in the rankings.
On the other hand a thought that occurs to me is that IIRC Nole played a lot of tournies last year whilst he had the impetus behind him. I could be wrong but it strikes me that he's been less successful this year since he started missing the odd event? Maybe Andy needs to let the adrenaline carry him through.........providing the back's ok.

I hope Andy acclimatises to the heat. It's really hot and humid here. I was hoping they'd put him on at night when it's a bit cooler but I suppose they have to put last year's champ. But having him go earlier is probably better for his time clock.
Milos played very well and beat Troicki 6-3 6-4. If Andy wins tomorrow they'll face off probably on Thursday night and I'm hoping to get a ticket if that's the case.

Ironman? Braveheart?
Perhaps the thinking was to loosen up a bit after the flight of 7/8hrs? Or just try to tire himself out so he'd sleep; although I think I read somewhere that he was hoping to sleep on the way over to Canada.
I'm glad they've given him the mid-afternoon match in Toronto; fits better with his UK body clock even though it might be a bit hotter on court than it was in London!

Hmm.... 1010 points to defend, gold medal high to come down from... Lendl there but will not be in Cincy...
Cincy is brutally hot at times... remember when Andy won his first Master's in straights and said if they had played a third it would not have been pretty...
Makes quite a bit of sense to try and maximise the others not being there and get the points this week, work out with Ivan and then take Cincy with a pinch of salt, rather than the other way round.
But if he has a first match defeat, fair enough and understandable.
Apart from missing the Olympic village and closing ceremony, all in all, sounds like he cannot lose too much either way!
C'mon Andy!

It would be understandable if Andy doesn't get far in this tournament this year, but I hope he goes on to take this match. He will rarely get an easier 90 points for one match!
I think he only gets 45 points for his 2nd round match because he had a bye in the first round.

No, he gets 90 points if he wins, but if he loses (like last year) he only gets first round points of 10. The get the points for the round they reach, but can't be said to "reach" second if they have a bye so don't get the points for second.

If Andy loses he gets 0, if he wins he gets 90 for reaching R3 i.e. that's what he'll get if he loses in R3.
Canada is slightly different this year because they've got 16 seeds with a R1 bye instead of the usual 8.
I think that is why it's a 0 for the 16 seeds losing in R2 rather than the usual 10.
(there was no explanation offered on MTF)
ATP1000 Ranking Points for Cincinnati: per round reached

KITKAT - Andy to serve next at *3-2.
Looks like the bipartite patella is aching a bit with this change to hard-court surface; no sliding as he's been able to do on clay and grass. So he'll have a bit of treatment on it at the changeover. Don't think it's a worry; he's often said how the players get aches and twinges as they adjust to playing on different courts.

Probably needs a pain killer and the ministrations of AI to sort it out. Hard courts are the worst for knee problems as Rafa knows only too well ... and Andy's having to adjust to how he moves on the hard court.

A chocolate icing finger licking interview with Andy on Sky. Andy very complimentary about the tournament and how he wants to be there but you can tell he would have liked to have had more time to celebrate the gold medal. Mr Lendl however is all about what's happening next. The knee is not a worry just the result of transition to hard court after 4 months (is it really that long?) away. He was very relaxed and he didn't take his medals with him to Canada.
Mouth full of cake and chocolate all over his hands- like a kid in a sweet shop while doing his interview!

You never know what's to come...exciting times indeed.:highfive::tennis:
I posted this on the newspaper thread but it belongs here too
Sky Sports (http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,,12611_7974567,00.html) - Andy's post match on court interview (the one while eating the cake)
video
Love it - he hacked out a whopping piece of cake including the Gold Medal.
:shades:
Marcus Buckland wasn't sure if it was the real medal - he even asked Andy about it!
Had to tell him he'd left it at home!

Photograph on twitter of Andy doing presser. He looks so weary. Perhaps someone can put it on here...I can't.
Great to see that Andy won and seemingly playing aggressively too :) Hope he can get some rest though! Needs it!
Really sweet of the Canadians to give Andy a cake (on Fed's birthday ;) ) looked scrumptious! Hoping to find a pic of Andy with chocolate all over during sky sports interview
He looked and sounded soooo happy in that interview - really relaxed and definitely not worried about the knee. Of course he had to cut a big piece of cake so as to cut round the medal didn't he ;) - and then it would have been rude not to eat it all!
Great match - played the tough points with meaning and got out of jail fairly straightforwardly on next to no sleep. Let's hope he can catch up on some kip before his match with Milos - don't want that young man thinking he can beat Andy every time he meets him.
