View Full Version : CANADIAN MASTERS (TORONTO), R3: Milos Raonic through to the QF, W/O after Andy pulls out(sore knee)

Andy's negotiated the aftermath of his Olympic win on Sunday, flown across the Atlantic yesterday and won his first match here in reasonable shape with a 6'1, 6'3 win over Flavio Cipolla aka Onion.

Despite the odd clutch at his body and calling the trainer on to treat his knee (probably taking a bit of stress from the court surface change from grass to hard) Andy put on a decent performance.

Next he's up against the Canadian Milos Raonic who will undoubtedly get a lot of home support

They've met already this year in Barcelona with Raonic beating Andy in 2 sets in the Quarter-Final. H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=R975) is 0-1 in the Canadian's favour.

The match is tomorrow Thursday 8th August and might be the night match as it features the Canadian player. That might not be so good for Andy 'cos his body clock is still adjusting.

Hope the team are giving him good advice and he's listening! He obviously knows on one level (as he said in post-match interview) that he needs to pace himself prior to the US Open but my concern is that he's still on such a high that he's not thinking clearly......when the adrenaline dries up, mind and body inevitably react, so PLEASE take care, Andy and listen to your body. Not worth busting a gut (or knee) if that's what it takes to get past Raonic. It's the USO that counts.

Eat some more choccie cake and chill out....:shades:.

You lucky thing, Fiona - enjoy!

Will have to record this one. Got visitors so no way I can stay up.

Marvellous - just checked and it looks like Sky won't be covering the night match. Their broadcast finishes at 11pm. What am I paying for??? Doubtless it'll be on the red button but you can't record that :grrr:

I hear it is raining in Toronto at the moment, and the forecast is poor. Andy might get some enforced rest! Not that it's much help if it is all to catch up later.

Yes thanks. The schedule has changed from this morning. Not that it looks like it'll matter.

Decided not to go now coz of the rain. I nearly bought the tix last night but decided to wait till this morning to see about the weather. It's pretty bad. No play at all today. I remember being stuck in a rain delay during Wednesday afternoon in 2008 with my two young kids, we waited and waited in the damp corridor of centre court and 3.5 hours later gave up and went home. Very unpleasant indeed. Won't ever do that again. In answer to your question you pick them up at Will Call at the gate making sure you buy them over the phone at home before you leave. Or you buy over the computer on their website and take the printout with you.

First ever QF for Milos at a Masters event (or slam). He must take advantage of it as most big names are out.

Andy Murray has pulled out of Toronto with a left knee injury. He says there is a bit of concern.

Hope it doesnt threaten participation in US Open. Not the news we wanted after such a blissful week last week.

When I heard the breaking news I posted this on this forum's Facebook page:

"If that's true, I think that was a very good call on his part - he's come over, honoured his commitment to the tournament, acclimatised himself to the surface a bit, won a match, and has now taken a sensible decision ahead of the US Open. Disappointed not to see him play, but think he's made the right call. :)"

...At this stage I have to say I'm not unduly worried - it didn't look like a big injury yesterday, I think what Andy probably wants to do is avoid turning a niggle INTO a full-blown injury ahead of the US Open. My instinct is that he'll play Cincinnati - if he doesn't, then we'll know it's a little more serious. Until then, I'm not panicking (which for me makes a change)! :)

Take care... :)

It's the result of the crazy scheduling. Andy suffered 4 years ago and it's happened again. Surely by 2016 the schedule will be amended to give Olympic tennis the prominence it deserves but it requires cooperation between the ITF and ATP. In no other Olympic sport are the participants competing elsewhere before the games have even ended.

Get some sleep Andy and then watch the boxing.

I agree with you. He's always had a knee problem (although this might be different) and normally manages it very well but the move from clay/grass to hard courts isn't easy and he probably jarred it. Better to rest it for a couple of days and ease back into practice ahead of Cincy.

I'm glad he's taken that decision, it was a wise one.

I have to admit I'm mighty relieved though I rather wish he'd pulled out sooner and rested at home. I do hope it's the usual transition problem aggravated by his Olympic exertions rather than anything more serious. Is it the same knee that has the bi-partite patella? I thought that was the right not the left knee?

Just editing to say I've just had my suspicions confirmed on the other thread - it isn't the usual problem so hope it's not a major concern and nothing that rest and treatment won't put right.

Ridiculous schedule....

Thinking about it today, it's inevitable that Andy's body would be fatigued after such an intensive stretch in the Olympics - getting to two finals must have taken a toll that in the high of the moment and the aftermath, he would not have recognised. That, combined with the switch to hard courts and no recovery time in between, was bound to catch up with his body. Tired muscles are obviously more prone to injury, but his team know all that and will be pulling out all the stops to get him in shape for the USO. Hopefully we will know more over the next few days (though Andy rarely reveals much about his injuries). If he has to pull out of Cincy too, then so be it.

Just a shame that there has to be a low after the high, but hopefully short-term. I wish he'd brought the medal with him to keep reminding himself of his glory-moment - but on the other hand how could he ever forget?

Wonder if he and Rafa are texting eachother knee-updates??

He didn't seem unduly worried about the knee in his postmatch interview so I think he and Ivan have decided a bit of rest and recuperation are more vital that points at this stage. Sensible decision - hope it pays off at the US Open

With the rain delay and the prospect of matches being played so closely together (if he'd got through) he and his team have probably made a wise decision and hopefully the knee is not a huge concern. Also pleased he didn't give Raonic another opportunity for a face off when he's at a disadvantage.

Fingers crossed that all's well and we'll see him in Cinci.

Mind you lack of grass court practice didn't seem to do him too much harm at Wimbly.

People are being overly dramatic again. There are headlines stating that he is worried about being in form for the USO. I doubt it's really that serious. He is probably just exhausted.

I agree. Sensible thing to do given the revised schedule in Toronto.

Exactly and the rain isn't really helping things either. Playing 2 matches in one day could certainly do more damage than good.
