Broady plays Fan-Xu in R1 of the qualies.

Konta faces Kai-Chen-Chang.

Goodall is the qualies, plays Guido Andreozzi in the first round. James Ward plays Tursanov.

Qualies draw. (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/draws/qs/r1s1.html)

Konta plays Kai-Chen Chang in R1 of womens qualies, Braody plays Yi-Fan-Xu

Womens qualies draw (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/draws/us/r1s1.html)

Didn't see Robbo or Watson names in the qualies so presumably they go straight into the main draw! Also Bally and Anne perhaps?
The top 4 British women get direct entry to the main draw due to their ranking. Heather is in the top 60, Keathovong top 70, Robson top 100 and Balty lies just outside 100.

I thought Bally had stopped playing for a while, so I wouldn't expect to see her there.

Bally is definitely not playing - see entry list in first post of THIS thread which is for discussion about the ladies side of the USO. Posts moved over to keep on topic.

Ladies Draw - R1

Heather Watson v Li Na who just won Cincinnati and reached the final of Toronto.
:hmm:

Laura Robson plays a Qualifier in R1 but could then face Kim Clijsters!

AnneK has another inform player in R1 - Angelique Kerber.

Helen40
23-08-2012, 23:41
Wow, a better draw for Robbo than the other two - that makes a change. Lets hope she makes the most of an easy R1 opponent, and that the other two aquit themselves well. I'm very interested to see how Hev does, be surprised if Anne makes an impact.

24-08-2012, 00:25
Still mainly about experience for Heather and Laura but sad Heather did not draw somebody around her own ranking. Just hope she can be competitive and take positives out of the match whatever the result. Laura hopefully will gain the experience of putting somebody in their (ranking) place in her first round.
If so, given it is Kim's last USO and presuming she comes through her first round, Laura could well get the experience of a full Arthur Ashe court evening match which would be great experience!

24-08-2012, 06:37
Certainly tough for Heather but let's hope she performs and doesn't feel too much pressure , whilst Li Na can have bad days. Anne definitely up against it too! Laura at least does have reasonable opener but would face much the same sitiation if she goes through to face Kim.

laura and heather both play on monday. heather is first game, at 11am, and laura is third. different courts, 17 and 4 respectively

Women's doubles draw...

http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/draws/wd/index.html

Hev will play with Erakovic; Laura with Peer; Anne with Anna Tatishvili.

Tough openers for all.

Hev has just started her match against Li Na. She has won the first game :)

Sallydaisy

Going with serve; Hev 2-1 up. Playing steadily according to Neil Harman.

Sallydaisy
27-08-2012, 15:46
Ahhhh. 2 breaks of serve and Li is serving for the first set at *5-2.

On Ashe - Stosur is already a set up (6'1) against Petra Martic.
Andy's match is on that court but not before 13.00 (18.00 UK time).

Sadly Heather lost to Li Na after play resumed.

Also, Sabine Lisick[16] is out;

@sorana_cirstea (https://twitter.com/sorana_cirstea) scores an upset, taking out No. 16 seed @sabinelisicki (https://twitter.com/sabinelisicki), 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. #court13 (https://twitter.com/search/?src=hash&q=%23court13) #usopen (https://twitter.com/search/?src=hash&q=%23usopen)

and Julia Goerges lost to Pliskova. So that's a couple of upsets already in the ladies event.

Jan
27-08-2012, 20:05
Been out - sad to see Hev lost, but not really surprised.

david1610
27-08-2012, 22:20
Yes, but was disappointed she lost the last five games in each set, especially leading 3-1 in the second.
Did not see it though. How well did Heather play?
PS Still feel strange posting this here and not on Heather's thread, as that is basically her "story" and this part of the story will not be present.

Linda

Goerges out will mess up my BOTP, although I got Cirstea beating Lisicki.

david1610
28-08-2012, 00:27
Laura currently 5-3 and set point for (at least) the third time. She takes it 6-3
This opponent is a year younger than Laura and ranked 393
She seems to have a very good first serve though which Laura has taken some time to work out. Tight first set though 38 v 32 points.
C'mon Laura!

david1610
28-08-2012, 00:38
Slack from Laura. She was 0-40 with three BPs oN Crawford's service. Let them slip and now 0-2 in the second set. She should know by now you cannot give a lower ranked player hope!
C'mon Laura!
Back to 3-3 Make that 4-3 Crawford.
Crawford has a high first serve percentage and wins a lot of those points. Laura is winning two thirds of Crawford's second serves. All about getting enough access to those second serves, according to the stats!
Phew! 7-6 (8-6) in the second set tiebreaker.

Well done Laura! You defend your points from last year AND you get the (adopts US accent) "popcorn" match against Kimmy!

Hope it is a night match with a full house on Arthur Ashe and you love every minute of it!!! Well done!

Alis
28-08-2012, 03:25

Konta took the first set 6-2 against Babos! Babos is now though serving for the 2nd.

Alis

Venus Williams reminds me of Olive Oil on 'Popeye' - it must be the hair I think!

DaveArneRiise
28-08-2012, 20:35
Titanic game this on Babos serve, Babos had serveral set points and Konta has had several BP... could be pivotal this game.

That game must have been about 20 minutes long and Konta eventually gets the break! 4-5 she will now be serving to stay in the set though!

Konta holds for 5-5 then breaks for 6-5! Stunning stuff this, will now serve for the match.

Sallydaisy
28-08-2012, 20:56

Round 2 Ladies Singles matches - Laura and Jo have to punch above their weight to win.
[Q] KONTA, Johanna (GBR) 205 Vs. GOVORTSOVA, Olga (BLR) 67 (CH 35, June 2008)
ROBSON, Laura (GBR) 89 v CLIJSTERS, Kim (BEL) 23 25

DaveArneRiise

If Konta can beat Babos who incidentally is a better player than Govortsova (based on rankings) then she is capable of giving Govortsova a match!

I agree about great victory for Jo and also about Sloane Stephens ( a good friend of Heather's and Heather's mum!).
She is a year younger than Heather and Heather has psyched Sloane out in their matches but I do not see that working for much longer once Sloane gets a little bit older and more experienced.
Yes, the comparisons with the Williams sisters are f not exaggerated IMHO!

If anyone had any doubts whether Laura had chosen her new coach well - the "slavedriver" - I think that just answered them!
Couple with silver medal confidence, a star is being born. She was hitting one of the top WTA players of the last decade off court at times, even someone with really, really good defence!
Better lateral defending, clearly an attempt at more composure before second serves, and after the first four or five games, probably only one game and a few shots not at a really high level.
And still the youngest player in the top 100!!!!!!!!

An awesome performance from Laura, absolutely thrilled for her! Kept thinking she maybe wouldn't quite maintain the high standard or Kim would just find something special but Laura was so gutsy and kept plugging away. Think it was key that she took the forst set from a break down and sps down at 5-6. of course pity Kim singles career is now over as in addition to being a great player she had such an engaging personality.

That was Kim's first US Open defeat in 9 years btw - last time she lost was to Henin in the final in 2003

She'd had a run of 22 consecutive wins, up until now:

2005 (7)
2009 (7)
2010 (7)
2012 (1)

It was also Kim's first loss at the US Open to a player ranked outside the top 10, going right back to her debut in 1999.

Great win for Laura but oh so sad for Kim to go out in the second round. :crying: It's one of those matches where you're happy for the winner and sad for the loser like when Rafa plays Andy.

Anyway, Chris Evert was gushing over her and said she reckons Laura will be in the top 20 really soon and then potentially top 10 and gave her kudos for picking her new coach. She also said she could give Li Na a good run for her money.

What a fantastic performance from 18yr old Laura Robson. She really did "play her butt off" and deserved that win. Shame for Kim Clijsters to bow out perhaps a little earlier than she might have hoped but in a way I'm glad she lost to an upcoming youngster. Props to Laura for her interview afterwards - showing admiration and respect for Kim's contribution to the game.

All bodes well for the future - but it might be back to earth with a bump against Li Na in her current form. (That's my spot of anti-jinxing for tonight...).

david1610
29-08-2012, 23:59
There were a lot of very exciting things to take from her performance tonight. I though Heather and Laura would be good enough to create some added interest at slams for the first few days, as Laura had always seemed to a great serve, and weight of shot, but she was too young to know just how good she might be.

Tonight showed a possible future. She has only been working with her new coach since Cincinnatti???????
Good grief.
Once she can defend well one more metre to the left and to the right and banish the second serve yips, watch out the rest of teh top players!

Bet the Fed Cup captain is also feeling optimistic for the future tonight!

Next test is to stay grounded and as a minimum keep Li Na honest.

I do not automatically think the floodgates will open now but as long as Laura avoids the post-best-win-of-career-back-to-earth-drubbing in the next match, that will do me.

Helen40

Um, I posted her petential opponents......that's why I said the final , and not win it. She's got close to even Sharapova before, and only lost it, not Sharapova win it. But even at Laura's best at the mo unless Serena is playing badly, Idon't believe she could win it.

Chris Evert just said she sees Laura as a champion. That's pretty good coming from her.

Anyway Shazza just won 6-0 6-1 so now it's Andy time. :yahoo:

Watching Shazza and DU is so boring and predictable. Kim and Laura gave us an exciting, tense, thrilling match. Would that we could see more ladies' matches like that. No wonder most of us prefer watching the men.

There are plenty of good WTA matches.

Besides, for the Sharapova match, you could easily substitute that for Novak's predictable thrashing of his own hapless opponent yesterday.

As this is a fan forum about an ATP player, then it is perhaps unsurprising that most people - the 'us' that you refer to - prefer watching the men, don't you think? ;)

Over at CC - which is a non-fan forum - the split between WTA and ATP is probably 50-50. Many like and follow both, in fact.

We've debated this at CC a few times, and the consensus was that whether there is a good or bad WTA or ATP match often depends on the matchup between players. There are lop-sided, dull predictable matches on both sides. And equally, thrilling, exciting matches on both sides, too.

The matches they've had on AA so far - except for Laura vs Kim - have been short, very boring and one-sided. I feel sorry for the people who pay good money for this. And I see Fed has the night match tomorrow yet again. Honestly. Yawn.

I see Team India have also lost in the first round to Team Australia. What on earth is going on!!!

Um, I posted her petential opponents......that's why I said the final , and not win it. She's got close to even Sharapova before, and only lost it, not Sharapova win it. But even at Laura's best at the mo unless Serena is playing badly, Idon't believe she could win it.

Sorry, Helen - didn't see that.

But if you think about it, the AA matches are the top seeds versus...... the rest. The most mismatched encounters in terms of ranking. Look at the number of five set thrillers today on the smaller courts where you can get good quality players (top forty/fifty say) close in ranking playing each other, or two in-form players. Come the second week it is a different story of course!

Absolutely.

I've been to a few slams now where I've had tickets for showcourts in the first week - and have often found myself enjoying the matches on the sidecourts much more, where the matchups are much less one-sided. More often than not, I do usually get tickets for the side courts only, anyway.

And this applies to both the women's and men's game.

In terms of watching matches on TV, It has often been frustrating to see the beeb (for example) continually showing one-sided matches in an early round at Wimbledon involving (say) Fedal rather than a match on another court where the players are evenly-matched, and are bringing out the best in each other in their battle for supremacy.

In the second week, it is indeed usually a different story! Mind you, even the matches early on in that week (say, 4th round), coverage can be skewed towards the big guns and ignore the better matchups in prospect.

I've got to say that I think with the current standard of the Top 4 in mens tennis, plus Tsonga, Ferrer and a few others, we're pretty spoilt by the quality of matches.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed Lauras match last night, not just because she won, but because the quality was just so high. It was a great match up and produced a great game.

Granted I often watch womens tennis (only at slams) and i'm utterly bored within three games. But on reflection, i'm just as board watching alot of mens matches too. Particularly games outside of slams can very very poor.

I suppose if I were to watch womens tennis a little more, outside the slams in particular, i'd come to appreciate the quality a little more. One thing I will criticise the womens game on, and i've said this before, is that female players today so often seem to be more focussed on the athletic side of things rather than on their game itself, and thats made for, in my opinion, a drop in regular excitement, and perhaps quality. It would be great to see more slicing, drop shots and volleys in the womens game.

P.S. Laura, someone who naturally has a great game, has really really improved her movement in what seems like a summer. Her all round play was staggering yesterday!

I think most of the pundits agree that Laura needs to develop her fitness and her speed around the court. She is still very young and may well still be growing. It took Andy several years of work to achieve the degree of fitness necessary to stay at the top of the game.

Re: Laura. Chris Evert said she needs to get more fit and work on her movement. I'm no expert granted, but she looked just fine to me.
Me neither, but remember Chris Evert is talking about going from a "normally fit" top thirty player and a top, top player. Don't forget how much the men's top four have raised the bar in terms of fitness in the last five years as well.
The only thing that concerns me with the immediate future for Laura is that if her coach takes her up to the top, she internalises that she is that kind of player, and can stay around irrespective of coaching changes, bad patches, etc. The problem with a lot of the so-called top female players in recent years has not been getting to the top, but staying there!

1-1 Jo had to save break points in that game. Hope that puts her back on track!
Broken and now 1-4 interesting the eight games of the first set took 29 minutes and the five games in this set so far have already taken 35 minutes 41 points versus 36 points. Jo has gone from 72% first serve percentage in the first set to 40% in set 2.
Oops and now 1-5.

Well, if you'd caught the Shvedova v Vinci game today, you would have seen that in 3 sets, their number of net approaches (and therefore points won/ lost) at the net combined was 75.

That's 75 out of the 205 points played in that match.

You'd struggle to find men's matches with similar stats. As said before, it's all about matchup - Yaro and Robbie are fine doubles players - their net skills are very good.

Such a pity Jo didn't make it but the injury wouldn't have helped. Looks like it was a great contest with Kerber and Venus which could have gone either way in the end. Kudos to Angelique in coming through such a tough one whilst Venus should be able to take some confidence from the battle.

It certainly was a blood and guts contest, wasn't it!

It kind of reminded me of the Kerber v Lisicki match at Wimbledon this year. Both players really straining to get the upper hand, and Kerber somehow managing to eke out a win in the deciding set there too.
