Why a specific sub-forum for this?

For many - especially television companies/schedulers - it's almost as if doubles tennis didn't exist. Yet it's at the heart of many tennis communities/clubs worldwide and often the reason for many people to start playing the game of tennis. It's good fun to watch, especially when it brings together unusual pairings in mixed and other doubles events, and can provide great drama on court.

So, it's a shame that it often plays 5th fiddle to the Singles events on the professional tennis circuit.

Over the last few years there's been a lot of discussion of the doubles game on Jamie Murray's forum which was part of his official website. Following the closure of that we've incorporated sub-forums in AMFF to discuss his progress on the doubles tour and his life off court.

But we wanted to continue chatting about the world of doubles in general not least because there's a lot of successful British Doubles players to follow who are now in the top 100 world rankings.

So rather than 'lose' them in Tour Tennis we're giving them a 'home' of their own - and equal billing with the singles guys.
:)

With their third team title of the year in Kuala Lumpur, Butorac & Rojer moved ahead of the Poles for eighth in the 2011 doubles teams rankings which determine the eight qualifying teams for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. I think the final spot is the only one truly up for grabs. Indo-Pak Express are in seventh and lead Booty-Jules by 640 points. While they can certainly be overtaken by both teams, they'd really have to struggle down the stretch to miss out. The 10th place team, Isner-Querrey, is nearly 900 points behind Fyrstenberg-Matkowski and they probably aren't playing together the rest of the year with Sam trying to come back from injury.

7. Bopanna/Qureshi 3310
8. Butorac/Rojer 2670

9. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 2640
10. Isner/Querrey 1780

I've always liked Booty & I'm glad he's doing so well.Congratulations on his marriage. :flowers:

I feel it's about time Jamie settled with a partner for a reasonable amount of time.

Also I feel that he should stop relying on Andy to boost his ranking-Andy has enough on his plate.

If he worked as hard as Andy, he could get there by his own efforts

I saw them play together in Estoril and they lost and only got to meet Booty as Jamie stormed off court. That in itself did not augur well - you should enter play and leave as a team.
But who knows, as time passes and they become more mature, maybe they can reunite one day?

I doubt it - Jamie has said that he regrets that he treated Eric so badly. I can't see Eric wanting to go back for another dose - anyway he seems very settled with his present partner.

Lots of changes pending with the doubles guys; many pairs have split up and these are some probably new teams for 2012. No news so far of a permanent partner for Jamie Murray.

Peya/Marach
Kas/Santiago Gonzalez
Bhupathi/Bopanna
Butorac/Soares
Qureishi/Rojer
Julian Knowle/Kohlmann
Paes/Stepanek (but Paes will partner Tipsy in Chennai and Bhupathi at the Olympics).
Knowles with Malisse (? or Mertinak?)

Michal Mertinak plays with Fyrstenberg in Brisbane, but then with Andre Sa at least in Auckland, Melbourne, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

RoastLamb
15-12-2011, 02:14
Then if Paes is playing with Bhupathi for the Olympics I don't get why he's now partnering up with Bopanna.

I really think it's time for the Bryans to split up.

Linda
15-12-2011, 12:24
So Malisse won't be playing with Dolgopolov any more? That's a shame as they were great together.

Although I would imagine that this year players will want to pair up with players of the same nationality, in preparation for the Olympics.

JAMES4578
15-12-2011, 13:20
Certainly should be interesting next year, patnerships aren't always long term of course though can't imagine the Bryans splitting! It does seem a bit strange with Paes and Bhupathi but hat's how things go!

Olympic years are always interesting. It's going to be intriguing to see how the inaugural mixed doubles bids are decided... will doubles skills & medal hopes outweigh popularity picks?

Bryans have won five of the past six Australian Opens and reached the final seven of eight times since 2003, so it's a tough call picking against them. They also want to stand alone in first with most major team titles.

I can't wait for it to all play out!

Interesting stat from Steven:

GB now have 10% of the ATP doubles top 40, with Jonny at 21, Colin 31, Ross 33 and Jamie 39.

We also have 4 more in the top 100:-
Ken Skupski #68
Andy Murray #72
Jamie Delgado #79
Dom Inglot #82

The doubles 'excuse-me' ...

Zimonjić will play Tokyo & Shanghai w/ Berdych,
Stockholm w/ new partner Lindstedt,
Basel w/ Nestor, & have a final fling w/ Llodra in Paris.

... Zimmy must have been taking lessons from Jamie Murray!

From Tom Tebbutt's blog a few days ago: (http://www.tenniscanada.com/index.php?title=TEBBUTT:-QU’IL-FAIT-BEAU!&pid=4117)

The team of Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi will play out the 2012 doubles season and that will be the end of a two-year partnership that has resulted in two French Open titles and an extended stay as co-No. 1s atop the ATP doubles rankings.

“Max isn’t confirmed to play a full season next year, he’s a little bit skeptical about his elbow,” Nestor explained about his Belarussian partner. “It’s a little bit hard for me to wait until the last second to see what he’s going to do. So I just decided to switch.”

It is disappointing that they will no longer be together because Mirnyi got better and better over the course of his time with Nestor. The two won a total of eight titles together – four in 2011 and four so far in 2012 – including the two at Roland Garros, the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals and the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai last year.

Nestor’s new partner will be Mahesh Bhupathi, the 38-year-old Indian who currently ranks No. 18.

Bhupathi has three career Grand Slam titles, but none since Roland Garros in 2001.

Overall, he has 50 career titles (to 79 for Nestor) and he has won at least one title for 16 consecutive years.

“He’s eager and I’ve had a lot respect for his accomplishments over the years,” said Nestor, newly turned 40 and currently ranked co-No. 3, about Bhupathi. “He’s a great doubles player and he has great doubles instincts. I feel that if he can make the transition well to the other side (the deuce court), we can be a very good team.”

As far as other changes coming for 2012, Nestor said, “(Nenad) Zimonjic will play with (Robert) Linstedt and Mirnyi will now play with (Horia) Tecau.”

Bhupathi played with his compatriot Rohan Bopanna in 2012. It appears possible that Bopanna may reunite with his former partner, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan.

Mons Challenger

Delgado/Skupski lost in R1 to Lukas Dlouhy & Michal Martinak.
It was Delgy's first tourney back after injury so he's probably not yet up to match speed.

In R1 Dominic Inglot (not ranked high enough to partner Huey in Beijing)/Lukas Rosol (CZE) beat (2) Paul Hanley/ Christopher Kas (AUS/GER) 6-4 4-6 [10-6].

In the Quarter-Final Inglot/Rosol play Polish pairing Bednarek/Janowicz.

Can anyone tell me why Johnny Marray is playing with Dominic Inglot this week instead of Colin Fleming. Is Colin injured?

The last tweet I read from Colin re tennis before today was he was headed home for a couple of weeks to work on a few niggles yesterday he tweeted this
Feeling fit and healthy so its time to hit the road again. Off to London today then playing Dusseldorf next week followed by @rolandgarros!

Fleming and Flipkens lost their first round mixed doubles. Marray and Watson were almost down and out but turned the second set around to take the tie-break and it's in to a decider.

Unfortunately they lost the MTB 14-12.

Think that leaves Dom Inglot as the lone Brit.

Jamie Murray played Stuttgart last week but skips this week before going to Gstaad.

They've won 19 out their last 21 matches and 2 Challenger titles in 3 weeks.

So far this year they've won 2 Futures titles (Nottingham indoors, January and Italy in April), reached the Final of the Nottingham Challenger on grass and won the 2 Challenger titles in Recanati (Italy) in July and Segovia (Spain) in August.
