View Full Version : US OPEN 2012, R2: Andy does the Dodig, 6'2, 6'1, 6'3

Andy made it through to R2 at the US Open after a stuttery start not quite reflected in the match scoreline against Russian Bogomolov. Win's a win; and for that our man next faces Ivan Dodig of Croatia who came through R1 with a straight sets win over Moriya from Japan.
Andy and Ivan (not Mr Lendl) haven't ever met on the ATP Tour before so the H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=D646) is 0-0.
The Croatian is 2yrs older than Andy, joined the tour a year earlier and is about the same weight as Muzzah. But he's 3" shorter, has only 1 career title compared to Andy's 23 and is currently ranked #118 (CH#32, Oct 2011).
I'd go into more detail but, yet again, the ATP website is up the swannee and turfing out 503 errors instead of telling me which surface Ivan is good on.
:grrr:
Whilst the US Open schedule bills R1 matches to be played over the first 3 days they do sometimes include some R2 matches on Wednesday - usually the night session.
So, Andy would definitely play on Thursday because that'll be the top half of the draw but he might play on Wednesday. No idea until the OOP is released but we'll keep you posted.
Oh, and hopefully by then Andy will have found his first serve ...

Perhaps, but there's a whopping great difference between playing the WR#231 and the WR#4.

Maybe I should avoid forums and stuff until after the tournament.

Dodig must be pretty good on hard - he beat Nadal in Canada last year or the year before I think.
"I hope Wednesday I will play as well good." - Dodig.
Wednesday? Is he just guessing?
I was hoping for Thursday as it would give Andy more time to rest..

I think Wednesday would be better. The weather might become an issue and the earlier he can get his matches out of the way the better.

What time is that gonna be here then? 3amish?
I had a feeling they would do that. Great - Andy will relish the atmosphere of a night match and the temperature should be eaier to deal with. The added benefit is that Andy should be comfortably through to the third round while others will have only just played their first round match. For once the schedule has worked in Andy's favour!

Ah not too bad then
Maria should do it in about 1 hour+ but goodness me if only she didn't go through all her rituals, walking to the back of court, looks across @ her opponent, fist pumping and taking all the time in the world to throw a double fault. hope she gets on with it.

Good match up this for Andy. Should have too much for the Croat.
Hopefully Andy will win this easily. I heard Dodig looked quite convincing today.
He is ranked @ 118 and has lost all previous slams in first round and the ATP 1000. I would think Andy should win this with ease unless he is still feeling under the weather with the humid condition.
Bit late but I'm going to try and stay awake for this one. Hopefully a comfortable win for Andy.

Double drat. Even if I stayed up I think I would fall asleep at the computer.
Don't underestimate Dodig, though. He has beaten Nadal, Soderling and either Tsonga or Berdych, I can't remember which. He is one of those lower-ranked players who is inclined to play out of his skin against top players.
Andy should win ok if he can get his serves in court, though!

He beat Nadal last year. (in Canada or Cincy...) I'm just saying he could catch fire. Any player could though.

Just hope Andy's serve is on song and he stays focussed and then we'll have not much to worry about. I heard Dodig say he was going to be aggressive and he also mentioned top ten players he'd played against. Seemed a really nice guy but still hope Andy wipes him off the court.:yahoo:

Not sure I can stay up for this one - we will see. As long as Andy comes out with his first serve there shouldn't be a problem.
So...all guns blazing Andy, take advantage of the beneficial scheduling and lets have another 3-setter (but with no personal service breaks) :cheer:

You could well be right - do hope you are. Perhaps as well I'm unlikely to be watching.
I have to be up at 6 in the week for work so this will be way too late for me. I'm getting too old for going to work for too many days on no sleep! Shame but hopefully I'll save my sleepless nights for later in the tournament.
Good Andy, I'm all ready. PC by bedside. alarm set and will have Eurosport on, can't stand the Commies on Sky. will follow on livestream instead.

It could be Petch and Fleming who are excellent but know what you mean about the others. Annabel has already had a snide dig at our boy in the chat before live play now. She is a witch!!:cauldron::furious:
I was just listening to Miles McLaggan and Andrew Castle. McLaggan's take on Andy's match was that you should read absolutely nothing into a first round match with the top guys. Their aim is to play better as the tournament progresses and there was never any possibility of Andy losing. Same thing with Federer - whom he also thought didn't over-tax himself. I was interested to hear that Miles is no longer coaching Baggy. He hasn't stayed long with anyone since he and Andy parted company, has he?
 Oh poo unlikely to see this as it will be 2.30am in Dubrovnik and hubby won't appreciate being woken in hotel room
