Not sure what is going on but when Andy gives up on points half way through them....
Feli is clearly tired as well... conditions must be tough. He just needed to win two or three service games :(
If this goes to a fourth Andy might not have much left.....
Oh .... find something. C'mon Andy!

Earlier in the set the commentators were saying he was making a shot diffently than he usually does, so could this be an injury?

Feli takes the 3rd set 6-4. Andy still leads 2-1 in sets.
Andy to open the serving in the 4th.
Feli has only once before taken a set off Andy in a match but Andy still won.
Much depends on whether Andy can regroup and sort out what is clearly physically wrong - whether it's the heat or a bit of a cramp. Surprised he hasn't had the trainer on tbh.

Right Mr Murray - please win this next set.
Possibly but why not call for the trainer, he hasnt done this has he?
He could only do that for new injuries. If he has an injury that has not been made public before the match then he can't get a time out. He could only call the trainer during change of ends.

But that was shortrly after he won gold medal and was recovering from problem he got in Toronto as it takes him a while to change over to hard courts. That was nothing to worry about.

Yes it is painful to watch but I suppose that is what we signed up for.
Don't think there is much point in being negative as it is what it is. The good news is Lopez is also looking very tired and the winner of this set is likely to be the one playing the least worst tennis.

Notice how Andy is not bothering to change direction if the ball goes the other way.
I wonder if the Olympics have meant that Andy has not done much gym work. Also wondered if there is some kind of umbilical strain. he was swallowing noticeably during the first or second set.

Bear in mind that after Wimbledon he had a week off then 2 weeks solid training in the UK before the Olympics. He also had 12 days working on fitness/conditioning after he went out of Cincy and almost a week at Flushing Meadows before the US Open began.
i think the heat is affecting him quite a lot today - it's around 33/34 degrees out there and probably higher on that closed in court.
I understand that 2 juniors have had to be carried off the court in their qualifying matches because of heat exhaustion so it really isn't great out there. And despite Andy saying he likes the heat you have to think that the Spaniard is more comfortable out there today than the Scot.

I Don't think Andy had an off day, just think the heat hit him, its bound to eventually. He's had a crazy few months.
Lopez played very very well. It wasn't lights out tennis, but he just did the basics very very well. As long as Andy wasn't totally finished physically, I always felt he had a shot, because Lopez wasn't hitting him off the court, he was just playing smart and solid. One tiny criticism from Andy today, I don't think his returning was particularly great, but his very high standards.
Those two day breaks eh? I don't like them.
I don't believe Raonic has that all round game which Lopez put on show today.
Wow, glad he got through that and it didn't go to a fifth set. I'm exhausted from watching it, can only imagine how he must be feeling!!!!

Well done Andy! That was so tough but your class shone through, you're amazing! Lopez played brilliantly credit to him.
This is from BBCSport.....
Andy Murray after his four sets victory over Feliciano Lopez: "I was struggling a little bit physically and that made it challenging. I was up two sets and a break and should have done better there, but I played well in the tie-breaks and that was the difference.
"It's a much smaller court than Arthur Ashe - it plays quicker and Feliciano has a great serve. I served better in the first couple of sets and at the end.
"He played some really good stuff, served well when he was down in games, producing big second serves. He was able to dictate a lot, win free points and play well at the net.
"It's the last major event of the year and you want to push through anything physically. I will be out here in the next match giving 100%."
Well done Andy, determination and grittiness got you through in extreme conditions.:clap:

Andy has delayed his press conference for an hour, no doubt he'll be in the ice bath. Feli saying nice things about him in his PC.

01-09-2012, 22:18
Well that was a bit nervewracking but a gutsy display from Andy to clinch it and he stepped it up on most of the key points. A tough challenge from Lopez but felt Andy should have taken in 3, but Andy was struggling a but physically, to his credit he found a way through it. Missing the Miami training may have been a factor but I'm sure neither Andy or his fans would trade his olympic success! He can still excel here but obviously challenging, hopefully he will step it up as the tournament progresses, despite all the factors felt the serve was a bit inconsistent today. However he got the win, well done!

Love your opening words "a bit nervewracking". You can say that again!! I was on pins but was giving Jay updates so couldn't go pacing around as had to stay on computer which did help somewhat. Do hope he enjoyed his lobster!!!
Andy did so well to come through that match - he kept fighting, didn't get down on himself and kept his focus in the tiebreaks. Feli was overall the better player today but Andy still won which says a lot about his winner's mentality.
If Feli had been playing any other top player today I'd have been rooting for him - outstanding tennis from him.
Well done Andy, determination and grittiness got you through in extreme conditions.:clap:

Love your opening words "a bit nervewracking". You can say that again!! I was on pins but was giving Jay updates so couldn't go pacing around as had to stay on computer which did help somewhat. Do hope he enjoyed his lobster!!!
I'm so glad that I knew the result before I watched this - not only did it take the nerves out of it but it meant I could actually enjoy the tennis - amazing! Oh and my lobster was great - hope yours was too, J!

Just a question....Did anyone notice the old guy in the light suit and baseball cap hovering near Andy before he went on court? I looked and said to myself....that looks like Kevin Spacey. I was right as Andy has posted pic of them on fb. KS is looking old or is that my poor eyesight?

Wow that was a toughie. But glad he came through. :yahoo:
Couldn't sleep so watched it again this morning, still nervewracking second time around. Some of the shots were amazing and Lopez did play really well.

Andy needed all his strength and determination to get through this one. Floppy trying to prove something with Rafa absent? It was certainly a fantastic match.
Shame Eurosport online didn't show Andys match, they have not been showing any of the Brits matches and have to keep peering at the smalll screen on Bet365, half the time can't see the ball landing!

I have the same trouble with Bet 365, Pat: I asked on here if anyone had a decent livestream and was given a choice of two, both of which worked!

Well - Andy handled that much better than I did. I was exhausted, biting nails, walking around the house and just couldn't bear to watch the final tie break until Mr C called that it was match point.
I think its a tribute to Andy's grit and determination that he came through that one - a year or two ago and he would have crumbled. Let's hope he packs his serve in that great kitbag of his for the next one against Milos.
Rest well Andy - you're going to need to

match just getting underway on eurosport now
Well done Andy - wasn't able to see the match but it sounds as if it was a typical 'Braveheart' Andy performance. :swingin: :swingin: :swingin:
Hope the match against Raonic is played in cooler conditions. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Just watched it again on Eurosport and enjoyed it much more without the tension. Best I've seen Lopez play against Andy but he churned out a win and that's what counts
Just back from hols. Was able to watch the second and third sets on our netbook in the hotel but I was banned after that, as Mr P said the whole thing was far too tense and nervewracking plus I was losing my temper with the streaming which had gone a bit jerky!
Confess to creeping on here under the bed clothes on my phone at midnight (Croatian time) once Mr P was snoring, to check the outcome. Was hugely relieved to see Andy got the win.
TBH I'm not expecting much now from this tournament for Andy. I think he needs 3 things if he's to actually win it........determination, guts and desire. I'm sure he's got all 3 but whether that will be sufficient to combat the physical deficiencies in the heat I'm not sure. I think I hope he gets a night match against Raonic. Seems to me the competition havebeen/are all playing "who???"!!!! Whereas Andy seems to have a load of banana skins just when he could do without them.
It sure was a nerve wracking match but some great points and our boy came through. Let's just hope he is fully recovered for tonight .....
