We don't seem to have a thread for him and now is as good a time as any.

I had a chuckle when reading this on twitter this morning.
Carole Bouchard is a French journalist for L'Equipe

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard)
Australian woman in the lobby: "u're covering the USO ?! So who is Federer playing now?"

Me: ..."errr he lost already",

AW: "Oh noooooo!" "but against who ?!"

Me: "Berdych". "Who ?! Is he new ?"

I've laughed. Big time. Ending my piece and she's off w/ broken Fedfan heart #Sorry (https://twitter.com/search/?src=hash&q=%23Sorry)

Not sure where to put this, but Tomas Berdych clearly has a very good sense of humour!

Interesting; he certainly played better at Wimbledon until he ran into Andy.

This is a good move from Tomas. I feel like recently he has struggled to be consistent and that he could post better results than he has been doing. Anything that can help him get there has to be worth a try.

So Goran has abandoned Cilic? These coaches are so fickle :big grin:

I thought thwy split after Wimbledon. I just presumed he was taking a break from coaching because I hadn't heard anything about a new partnership. I don't know why I didn't think of berdych he approached Ivan again so he was looking

I think he needs to train harder to improve his movement and speed. There are guys out there just as taller and taller who move better than he does. So many balls he just doesn't get there in time for.

In an interview released today, Cilic made it quite clear he dispensed with Goran, said their partnership had run its course.

Sorry there is something about Berdych that riles me. After Djokovic I would say he is the player I dislike the most. It's completely irrational, but there it is. I don't think he is well liked on the tour.

JerryD
26-09-2016, 17:33
I wasn't a fan. I had a lot of ideas about him. Then last year at the world tour finals he changed my opinion. There are so many divas on tour, moaning about one thing or another, often the world tour finals show you what some players are like.

There was Roger saying if he didn't make the top 8 he wouldn't go as an alternate, practising begging a curtain, never putting time in with the fans in all the years I have been, arriving by car to avoid them or pulling out of the final with next to no notice only to be miraculous better the next day. Then Dimitrov and isner refusing to go as alternates at different a times even though their ranking meant they should. Cilic and Mardy fish constantly complaining about everything. There are more.

But there are the times it shows the good guys, ferrer and tippy and gasguet taking the role of alternate seriously. Guys putting in with the fans, win or lose. Last year Berdych was attempting to practice before a big match, other guys had been on and he was on late. His practice session had been put up do you knew to expect him, so it was pack. Not long into his practice the audio system malfunctioned and interviews happening with Barclays customers in the fan zone started blasting out. So loud you had to hold your eyes, a security person tried and failed to get it stopped. The crowd laughed as it blasted at bad moments. And Berdych missed shot after shot. Now I expected him to show the diva I thought he was. But instead He laughed and his team laughed. They gestured at the crowd and everyone had a good laugh out of. Despite the fact they couldn't really practice he stayed on for the people watching and then afterwards he signed autographs and took photos.

This year probably as a PR stunt initially he came through the queue meeting people on camera, he even helped put up a tent and took photos, gave snacks and signed autographs. He was the only one that did. But after the cameras had gone he still stayed and spent time with people in the queue. Myself and yellowlivi waited until long after the cameras had gone to approach him, and got photos with him. He was nice. He will never be a favourite of mine. But he's good for tennis, good with the fans and puts in the work. This year will be a test for him, I'd be interested to see if he doesn't make London, whether he will go as an alternate.

Yes sorry for not posting Jerry thanks for the updates though! Seeing him the times you mentioned made him much more likeable at least off court.

Thanks for that Jerry D. Like Teresa, I have always had a totally irrational dislike of Berdych. My opinion was challenged when he got involved in the charity doubles at Queen's for Elena B's academy but, even then, I told myself that he looked on it merely as a good PR exercise. It wasn't helped, of course, by him beating Andy so often in the early years. Now perhaps I will have to rethink my dislike. As you say Jerry, he will never be a favourite of mine but maybe he isn't quite as low in my estimation as he used to be. I might even be tempted to support him but only if he's playing Fed or Stan!

I think Thomas may have his good points and perhaps you don't see the real him on court, however not really been one of my favs for a while though that's partly formed by his attitude in some of the Murray matches where there can be a bit of an edge between them, obviously though that can add to the spectacle on occasions. However in his younger days when he was being talked up I was more interested in him. There was that incident in Madrid 2006 when he gestured for the crowd to shush which wasn't exactly smart but I thought some Nadal fans made too much of it. However in any case whilst a top player think he could've developed his game more by adding a bit more variety though it has been difficult for him to match the speed of the very best.

I like Tomas - he makes me laugh .... and he tweeted at me once .... answered a question - albeit with a one word answer "no" but shows he read my tweet to him!! He has some pretty funny exchanges on twitter at times, and I had a lot of sympathy for him with the appendicitis. I quite enjoy watching him play - when his shirt's are toned down :rolling:

I like him too, Jane - have never understood why quite a few have taken against him, sometimes quite harshly. He's really good humoured on Twitter, as you say, and also very sporting - when he was brutally mullered by Djoko in Beijing he called Novak's play 'God's performance', sent his greetings to Jelena etc, I think he's a nice guy. I wish he had grabbed the USO instead of Cilic, and still hope he might sneak one slam, Goran style.

I have nothing against Tomas either. He's not one of my faves but I don't really understand why so many people dislike him so much. There has of course been the needle with Andy but I don't mind a bit of spice and I would be surprised if they are not fine with each other off court. Agree with the twitter thing too, he's good fun.

Also very good with kids both in London and, I know from a friend, at the tournament in Dubai too.

Teresa
27-09-2016, 12:21
I think what really put me off him was "cap gate" in the US Open 2012, I didn't think that was sporting. He has also come over as desperate the way he grabs other more successful players cast offs. I also wasn't impressed with the way he dumped Dani Valvudu.

JerryD
27-09-2016, 17:44
I think the problem with the Dani Valverdu thing was the way it was reported. It's not uncommon for players to change coaches mid season. Or drop them when something better comes along. Dani didn't waste anytime dropping Delpo when an offer from dimitrov came in. In Berdych's case he made the mistake of saying that at this point in his career if something isn't working he has to change it quick. It was then assumed that he blamed Dani for his fall. I don't believe that is what he meant, more that they partnership wasn't working and that he is looking to do anything to get on track as he gets older. He seems to have been nervy in big moments a bunch of times and so I was suprised when he picked Dani. For confidence boosting and improving the mental side of the game other players have usually gone with big names and ex players. Dani to mean seems more useful for people who are looking to change parts of their game. I think Thomas is right in his latest choice of coach, I think that will give him the extra mental strength he has needed. At this stage of career he has to make any changes he thinks will give him that little extra. I do understand that. He wants a major, to climb back up the rankings. Maybe this will help him get there.

JerryD
27-09-2016, 17:56
I also agree that he seems more fun off court. But this is true of most players, lots o. Them seem so serious and even aggressive whilst playing and then off court they completely different. I think a lot of players have had their moments, times when in one way or another they have been far from sporting. I really like nadal but I still remember a match between him and djoko were a bad call was made, feeling that he would have won the point Raffa was annoyed when he was told by the umpire to replay it. Djoko immediately jumped in and conceded the point. Raffa thanked him and got the point and play continued. Not long later, the exact thing happened the other way. However even though it was obvious to everyone that nadal had no play and the call came late, replay was called again. Djoko complained and Raffa said nothing. He left it. Even though it was a mirror of what happen before nadal did not behave in the world at he thanked djoko for. They replayed the point and nadal won it. Djoko didn't fume as I would have done, he wasn't outraged. At the end of the match they embraced and chatted as normal. There is no doubt to me that it wasn't sportsmanlike of nadal to accept the first point and fail to concede when it happened the other way around. But it didn't change my view of him, I saw it for what it was. Not his greatest moment, not as sporting as he should have been. Berdych's moments are like this to me. Unlike some players it is not a pattern of behaviour, like the guy who always screams after hitting the ball even after it crossed the net. Or tomic with his multiple matches faking injury, badmouthing other players before their match ups, playing the dying fly and then recovering. And of course the famous fake challange. For me, with Thomas it's more that sometimes when playing he's not his best self. As a result there are some dodgy moments. But I'm sure if I spent my working life on camera there would be some moments in which I wasn't anywhere near my best either.

Crikey! ... that was 4 years ago! You sure know how to hold a grudge! I didn't even remember that. As for coming across as desperate, of course he's desperate! He's a talented player who probably feels he has little time left to win at the very top. If he doesn't do everything he can now, that's it, opportunity gone.

Huge congrats to Berdy for successfully defending his title in Shenzhen. He took the first set in a tie break, lost the second set tie break and took the third 6-3. He said he was very happy for the win especially as 5 weeks ago he was in hospital. He said he was feeling good, everything was going well and he was happy with the way he played.

He is playing in Japan next week

Whilst would've preferred Gasquet to win (mainly as prefer game) seemed a quality match and in the circumstances Thomas done well. Personally I've never noticed Richie coming across negatively in his manner (though sure everyone has their moments).

I have to agree that I have never seen a negative side of him. I do strongly believe that sometimes because these guys spend their lives on camera we often see the worst of them as well as the best. I've said it about Berdych. I am not always my best self at work so I can see that others wouldn't be either.

Haven't ever noticed anything particularly rude from Gasquet but he went a bit ott in 2023 at the tour finals going on and on about how proud he was to have qualified and be in the top 8 and attend such a prestigious event- but he had actually been9th in the race and was only there due to Andys absence. At no point did he acknowledge this. Most players in this position on either tour acknowledge they've had a bit of good fortune .

JerryD

Sadly Berdy lost in Japan in the singles. He is still due to play in the doubles even though it seemed he was suffering from playing too much since his hospital visit. Here is what he had to say about his loss ...

“I had some chances to break but he saved those break points and began to play much better,” said Berdych, who missed the US Open due to appendicitis. “Then at the start of the second set, my body was giving me signs that I’ve been playing too much tennis after the last couple of week.”

Berdy is in action in Shanghai next week and has a potential tough 3rd round against Nick and quarter against djoko.

While Fed's win today has seen him make his way back into the top 10, Thomas has fallen down to 12. His match against fed was a poor showing from him, I'm not sure what's going on with him but I hope he can improve. I know Goran said they were making big changes to his game and his serve in particular so it could just be that. I guess time will tell but I hope he gets back in the top 10

Berdy has had some dodgy performances lately, he is now down at world number 14. He is in action in Dubai this week but it is a strong field so it will be hard to make up many. He plays rosol 4th on centre tomorrow after the Murray match.

For those who don't have Facebook Berdy is announcing his official retirement from Davis cup after 29 matches and being part of the winning team twice since 2003. He says that at 32 he now needs to have proper rest in order to play at the highest level. That he needs to think of his physical ability and save energy for his career.

I'm sure his team will miss him but won't judge him for this. He has put in a lot of the years. I wonder though how often before the Olympics do you have to play DC. As this decision could mean he can't play in the Olympics 2020. Though I guess if so then he meant to retire from that too.
