Well now we know - Andy faces Novak Djokovic in the US Open Final.
It'll be played on Monday 9th September at 16.00 local time, 21.00 UK.
Nole leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=D643) 8-6 but if you take out the claycourt wins it's 6-5 on hardcourts with Andy winning their only encounter on the grass at the Olympics, Wimbledon.
It's honours even this year since Andy has notched up 2 wins against the Serb - in Dubai in the Semi's and again just 6 weeks ago in the Semi-Final of the Olympics before going on to win the Gold Medal. Nole won at the AO Semi's and Miami Masters Final.
Sadly, it's at the Slams where Nole has the upper hand with a Final win over Andy at the 2011 AO and again this year in the Semi's of the AO.
They've played 5 Finals and Andy has won 3 - all at Masters events.
Nole has a Masters Final and Grand Slam Final win over Andy.
Time for Muzzah to go one step further .....

Whoever Andy plays I have a good feeling this time (just like at the Olympics). This is his time, I believe he is going to do it!!! :trophy:
No-one in the men's singles game has won Olympic Gold and the US Open in the same season in the Open Era before.
Rafa might possibly have done this in 2008, had certain someone not beaten him in the semi finals ;)
What about those that don't have sky or Eurosport? ;)
I read somewhere after my origianl post that sky have the rights to it (I think it was refererence why they didn't put the other semi on Armstrong), that's why the Beeb can't televise it  If you look on this site though. people tend to post internet links to streams. Hope to watch the rerun though, and follow it on the radio as I haven't got broadband.
hi niknak's mum, last night i got by with radio5live ccommentary, the 'as it happened' page from the guardian, or the beeb has one, the scores from slam website. OK you're not seeing the play, but atmosphere, tension all well conveyed.

Yes, that's what we did, though it was a little disconcerting that the live scores from usopen.org were ahead of our Radio 5 stream! It just seems such a shame when such a momentous thing as the possibility of Andy winning his first slam is happening and a large proportion of Brits can't watch it live. I tried a recommended livestream from someone on the forum last night but it had been taken down. I think I'll go for the radio and livescores again. :thanks:
Will this match be live on BBC?
:welcome: to the forum.
It is unlikely as it is Sky who have the TV rights.
Livestreams (there are always a few), Eurosport player?

For those asking about streams, just go to MyPremium.TV - they show all the Sky Sports channels and both EuroSport channels. The quality is usually pretty good.

Can't wait for this! Tomorow is going to be so difficult to get through. Andy did so well to make it through an extremely tough match yesterday. Really hope this is it for his first slam, all the best!
Also, for those without sky, like me, if you know any family/good friends that have it, ask if you can have their password and watch through sky go. Is how I have been able to watch it!

Will be tough, wouldn't expect anything less in a slam final but Andy can beat Nole. He did it at the Olympics and I am sure he can do it again tomorrow. Andy is a much better player than David on hardcourt so I am sure he will give Nole his first huge test tomorrow (assuming he gets there, looking likely though) since he has had a pretty comfortable tournament so far.

At time of rankings.

FO = won by No.2
W = won by No.3
USO = ??? (hopefully No.4) ;)
He's already N3 :)
okay I get that stats too and really hope it happens, but my 6th sense says: it's Nole :(

I just checked their H2H... Djoko is 1-4 against Andy on fast hard courts (winning in Madrid 2006). Not the worst prospect. But I'm not sure how fast Ashe actually is these days.
well it will be a very tricky match for Andy - no doubt about that. I just hope he can remember how he played at the Olympics - he CAN beat Nole, but I think we are in for a :coaster: and will definitely need the :sofa:

I know we talked about it during the Wimby final, but its worth bringing up again..
Both Roger & Novak's first slam wins came against players ranked in the 30's & 40's who'd never won a slam before, with Fed being especially blessed (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1187-WIMBLEDON-2012-FINAL-Andy-outplayed-as-Federer-wins-Final-4-6-7-5-6-3-6-4&p=82357&viewfull=1#post82357) by only playing three multiple slam winners in his 17 victories, (something Nole has equalled in his 5 slams)

Does anyone remember Puerta???
Because that is who Rafa beat to win his first Grand slam title.
Federer beat Philippoussis and Nole beat Tsonga.
None of their opponents had won a Grand Slam Title (or have done since) and although some of us might remember Mark and Jo-Wildried I suspect a lot of us are scratching our heads at Puerta* .....
;)
* he was unseeded and ranked 38 at the time of the 2005 French Open.
Reached a career high of '9 as a result of reaching the final.
Won Casablanca in 2006 but left the tour a few years ago.
Anyhow - Andy has to beat the player in front of him to win any match and whether it's the world #2 or anyone else it doesn't matter as long as he wins tomorrow!!!

Indeed, Djoko/Nadal/Fed all played non-slam holders in their first slam title matches. Andy has had it tough in his last 4 slam finals and it'll be tough again tomorrow.
Really really hope he can do it tomorrow, so nervous for Andy. :nailbiter:

I classed mid-paced as fast too. I know Armstrong is faster than Ashe, but the question is whether or not Ashe plays more like a mid-paced or a slow hard court these days as it gets resurfaced every year. It was a lot slower last year for example than in previous year. It seems to be a little faster again this year though.
Wonder if they sometimes find it difficult to find threads as well!! :)

You're correct! Maybe I really meant do they also have difficulty in finding the "right words"!
Thinking about the final, and forgetting the "windy set" lost to Daveed, Nole does not seem to have had to play a match, apart from possibly the del Potro match which I did not see, where he has had many changes of momentum.
Andy will have to be really strong in the first set and see if he can create some cracks in the Nole hard court juggernaut. I do not know what the game plan should be as Nole, like Andy, can respond to different game plans. But Andy and Ivan should have some ideas.
Andy will of course need to serve and return really well.
Hope it is a classic and we all get the result we are dying to see!
Draw on the Olympics for inspiration. All the best.
C'mon Andy!

I heartily agree, but I found out that Sky have got all the rights, so there's nothing the Beeb can do about it  Let's just hope that sky don't ever bother with any of the other big tournaments. That's why they had the crazy scheduling on Saturday too, cos when they split the semis a previously, the ticket holders and Sky got really narky.
woah, too many coincidences there!

How is everyone's nerves? I am strangely calm at the moment, felt exactly the same before the Olympic final!!! Good sign, I hope?
I'm a wreck. Snapping at Mr P.......not helped when he says things like "well Andy may just have to be the best player never to win a slam".....which I think was supposed to be comforting or something
I feel sick - not sure how I'm going to eat my dinner. My appetite shut down completely for the Berdy match and by the time it finished I was only good for a bowl of cereal!
Need a spare set of finger nails too.
Wishing Andy all the very best of luck.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
This morning I was at the optician's (Andy's auntie), drove past Andy's golden pillar box, and visited my friend, who lives next door to Andy's grandparents. It must be an "Andy" day!!!

Yes, this is me too, Pat.
It's been impossible to turn my mind to anything today. I so want Andy to do it this time. Everything's crossed for him. Best of luck. x

I too feel sick with nerves and hope and pray that Andy gets his much deserved first slam tonight. I wish him all the very best with all my heart.X
Me too!!!! Just watched the olympic semi again and now feel better, would def. recommend it and if Andy plays like he did then..................:))
I believe after all the experience he has gained over the past few years and with Lendl as a positive mentor/coach, this has to be his time. He looks pretty healthy (haven't seen too much of the back-clutching) and he has so much determination and fight. He will need all that tonight and as Sir Alex said " a wee bit of luck too" and whatever the outcome we all know on here
that Andy will fight to the end and make us all extremely proud, (and probably age a few of us too!!!) Going to go for a jog about 7.30 which always helps with the nerves, then back for a
nice dinner and a little vino rojo (which also has a calming affect lol!) Good luck to you Andy Murray and may the tennis gods be on your side tonight!
So desperate for Andy not to be disappointed again.
I am in bits atm. I just cannot bear to watch the final as i couldn't face seeing him lose. Cheer him on for me everyone who is brave enough to watch. I think he will win he just has to.

Neil Harman has tweeted the following: Fred Perry won his 1st US Open on the 10th Sept 1933 and he was the 3rd Seed.
Wow! That's started the shivers already!
Wind getting up between 20 and 25mph. Nole doesn't like the wind. Come on Fred Perry work a bit of magic.

Oh I have a Mr P here too :/ but you're lucky, mine has yet to call Andy 'good'!
starting to get very frustrated as I can't find anywhere that says the BBC will be showing this final which is utterly ridiculous. Even their normal crappy coverage shows the latter stages for andy in slams. I won't be able to watch live and don't have sky so was hoping I could record it. Does anyone have any info as to whether it will be shown on the beeb?
Definitely not shown on beeb. A few radio stations are covering the final, though - 5 live and I think maybe one (or more) Scottish radio station (can't remember where I read that)
I am thinking that the delaying of the final until Monday has just heightened the anticipation, the sense of occasion. It is the only US Open match being played today - which wouldn't have been the case, had it been played yesterday.
Am I right in thinking that Andy's never played Djokovic at the US Open before?
If Andy plays with belief and conviction, then he can win this. He's got the skills, the tools, of course.. Fingers crossed that he is able to do this.

Well, I hope this doesn't sound too weird but today doesn't feel like a Grand Slam Final day.
Maybe because it's a Monday? Maybe because Andy has already sent us on a couple of coasters in the last week. But it feels (to me at any rate) like an ordinary match day and I'm just looking forward to it whatever the outcome.
I think, as ever, that Andy will give it his all and I am sure that the work he and Lendl have put in will stand him in good stead. He is, after all, getting used to this kind of match and I think more than anything that winning the Olympic Gold and the lesser expectations of that event will have helped him on one more step of the way to self-belief.
He's up against the defending Champion and another fighter out on hard courts; someone against whom he's already waged huge battles. Nole will want to win just as much as Andy and prove that he can get back his #1 ranking sooner rather than later.
Apparently the pair of them watched the Scotland v Serbia footie together the other night.
It was no score draw ... I'm hoping beyond anything that the Scottish born player wins tonight.
He may have missed the Olympic Champions parade today but I bet there's a bunch of them rooting for him tonight and hoping he can once again do himself, and GB, proud.
20mins to go - time to sort out supper!!!
