Best poster of the lot imho.
Nadal has said his injury is getting better everyday so I hope we are in for a great and competitive major. Top performances from the top guys.

Inspired by SG and Alis, here is my poem: Ode to Rafa
There is a player from Majorca,
Who sweats more than a stalker,
He plays as slow as a glacier,
Really should be pacier,
When it comes to the rules he couldn't be naughtier.
(just kidding about, Linda :sofa::flowers:)
The sweating bit made me laugh lol
Hot dog,
and a lost racket?
Here boy.

So Rafa out early in every slam (or didn't play). Best days behind him?
So Rafa out early in every slam (or didn't play). Best days behind him?
Been saying for a while the era of a big four is finished and yes both the goat and Rafa will still draw mass adulation but neither will return to going deep in slams on a regular basis

Think this tournament has been a big step forward for the next Gen. They are not quite there yet, but now pushing to be at the very top and won't be long until one makes a real breakthrough - slam final or better. Could still happen with Pouille, but seems unlikely now... Unless Dimitrov can be regarded as next Gen, but we certainly don't want to go down that path.....

I think Dimitrov is a bit old for NextGen; I first saw him play back in 2009. Very disappointed Rafa went out last night. No-one in NextGen has quite the same aura as Andy, Rafa or Federer.

maybe they will have more "aura" when they have matured, been around a little longer so that we know them more.

This is why I wanted it too. I thought going deeper here would help rebuild his confidence. Maybe help restore some of the old Raffa

Really disappointed about Rafa still, especially when Pouille looked weak against Monfils last night. See he is down to play in DC though along with David Ferrer.
I feel disappointed for Rafa as well. I was hoping he'd go further. :pirate:
Raffa is another athlete to have his medical records released. His TUEs include intramuscular injections during his time off for injury. In his press conference last night he stood firm that he was a clean athlete because when you ask for permission to take something and are granted it for medical reasons, you are it taking a prohibited substance. He went on to say he'd never taken anything to improve his performance, only things that doctors had advised him was the best treatment for his knee. He also went on to say that it is not news just imflamatory.
I am inclined to agree that it isn't news and that he is not hurt by this "revelation" he has always pushed that he would prefer transparency and that he'd have no problem with having the results of any blood tests published. In fact he said that it should be publicised everytime an athlete gets a blood test and two weeks later, when they become available, the results should be too. He wasn't competing when he had the treatment.
It should be noted that the treatment he received was a standard one for treating inflammations, he was suffering from tendinitis at the time. He shouldn't have to defend himself for getting medical treatment during a period when he isn't even playing.
Thanks, Jerry. I am inclined to agree with what Rafa has been saying for years - that all the data should be published as a matter of course. Although one athlete has been very upset that details of her ulcerative colitis have been made public. So there is the other point that it's an invasion of privacy - would we all want details of our medical history made public? I must say that I am very surprised that they grant TUEs for medication for ADHD.
BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/37410856) - Mo Farah, Helen Glover and Justin Rose medical files released by Fancy Bears
Includes Rafa's details.
Nadal's comments during an interview in Shanghai ...
“I'm not satisfied with my performance [this season] because I got injured for two and a half months,” said Nadal. “I missed very important events. When you come back without practice and you have to compete in another important event without having practice and matches on your shoulders, it's difficult to be satisfied.
“I think if you asked me if I was satisfied during the period between Indian Wells and Roland Garros, yes. I had been competing for every tournament that I played and competing against all the players with good chances to have success. And that's the most important thing.
“The level of tennis had been high during that period of time, but, it took a lot of effort for me. I worked so hard to be what I was in that moment. When you break the rhythm with an injury it’s a little bit unlucky, and you need to accept and give more. And that's what I'm doing. I am trying to finish well and try to be ready again for the next season. That's my real goal.”
“My only pressure is trying to feel good on court and enjoy doing what I am doing,” said Nadal. “The goal is just to try to finish the season in the best way possible. Having a very painful injury in the worst moment of the year, it's tough to be back and especially when you are back and still with pain.
“I will keep working hard as I did today, as I did yesterday, as I do every day to recover the level of my tennis before the injury.”

It would be great to see Rafa playing his best tennis again. It is 13 years since neither Roger nor Rafa were in the top 5. Amazing.
It seems that Rafa is out for the rest of the season.
In Manacor Rafa celebrates the grand opening of his tennis academy as well as a reunion with Fed.

That's strange, as I've previously read that some Spaniards look down on Rafa because of his regional accent.
He has gone in for a very short haircut - just short of a complete head shave. (Always the best way to go when you are losing your hair, although I didn't think he was quite ready for it just yet). Some people on Twitter are speculating that this is in preparation for a hair transplant, although he has said nothing about it.

He might have to go for the transplant to keep his modelling contracts. I remember James Blake said he lost millions of dollars of modelling contracts when he shaved his head.

Yes it was like that. Judy refers to it in the BBC doc. Andy had to train with his mum and brother and had to go to school while Rafa had no school and played with Moya the world no. 1 at the time 😊

Interesting indeed - I never thought I would see the day! I think it's great for Rafa - I've always thought Uncle Toni was a bully. Now Rafa and Carlos can concentrate on what they want to do without interference.
They haven't 'split' but Toni will not be travelling any more, as he needs to spend more time coaching the youngsters in Rafa's academy.
That's not exactly what Toni's saying, Linda. He's saying that he feels he's not included in the decision making any more. He says he used to make all the decisions - now Carlos and Rafa's dad are in the frame and Toni say's he's not going to stick around until he has no say at all. He sounds very disgruntled to me but he certainly does have the academy to focus on. I just hope he doesn't bully any young talented hopefuls like he bullied Rafa and, if you don't believe that he is a bully, just read Rafa's autobiography!
I have read it, of course. But I think that report is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill - in the original Spanish interview, Tony did talk about how he made all the decisions when Rafa was young but as Rafa got older it gradually became less necessary for him to do so. He didn't sound disgruntled at all.

Well done Rafa on winning the 1,000th match he has played in his career.
“One thousand matches is a lot of matches. Obviously that’s good news because that says I am having a long career. During a lot of years, I heard that I’m going to have a short career, so it's something important for me,” said Nadal. “I remember the first match very well because it was at home in Mallorca. It was my first victory on the ATP and was a great feeling.”
Is it me...or has anyone else noticed Rafa suddenly has more hair??

Just had a quick look at ranking points, Rafa has a Semi and QF to 'defend' from Madrid and Rome last year. He will need to make up about 300 points in these 2 tournaments to overtake Federer into the top 4 for Paris. So making the final in Rome would certainly do it, winning either would also resolve the issue. I fancy Andy would prefer it if Rafa was removed from the potential QF opponents in Paris.
Interesting - I will be very surprised if Rafa doesn't manage that.

First Carlos Bernardes, now this to Carlos Ramos:
Nadal’s mixed feelings by Stuart Fraser, The Times:
Rafael Nadal eased into the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win against his Spanish compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut, but was furious with the umpire, Carlos Ramos, after receiving a time violation for exceeding the 20 seconds allowed between serves. “You are going to have to give me many more warnings in this match because you are not going to be in the chair again,” Nadal said.
This is the Nadal by friend who worked at Wimbledon for years said he behaved off court. Anyone telling him what do were told he would have them dealt with. Imagine if Andy behaved like this. He would be castigated for ever. Djokovic also gets away with far too much. Ramos was probably concerned the other day that Djokovic would wham a ball into the crowd as he frequently does
Josephine
05-06-2017, 08:47
Both Nadal and Djokovic are breaking the 20 sec rule around 95% of the time. Maybe it should be 25 sec as in ATP matches, but they are still taking the proverbial.
Thank God we have the time rule, or imagine what we would have to endure if they met in the semi-final - many boring minutes of ball bouncing and pant-pulling.
Find Nadal's threats to umpires really distasteful. And though people criticise Andy for his on-court behaviour sometimes, at least I have never seen him make any threat to an umpire!
They all break the time rule in the slams because it is shorter than at other tournaments. Another commentator said that Rafa takes 24 seconds on average and Andy takes 23 seconds on average. Both would be within time normally, but are over time at a slam. So the rule needs to be changed.
I read somewhere that Rafa was up to 38 seconds on occasion.
Apparently he was well over a lot of the time
This (time violations) is Inverdale's pet subject at the moment and he tries to draw everyone into that conversation. This morning he asked, (Oh dear! I can't remember if it was Petch or Santoro!), anyway the answer was that the umpires should start to enforce it much earlier in the matches rather than leave it until deeper in the matches when it might occur at important points. If the warnings are later in the match the players have become used to getting away with it whereas if it's enforced quickly they will be more aware they are not going to get away with it. The whole thing is very inconsistently applied anyway.

this is something that could be trialled at Challenger or Futres level - having a digital clock on court, counting down to zero (Jo Durie's favourite idea). Trouble is, all the players would find excuses why they gone over the limit, ballkid threw the ball too slow/in the wrong place, ball was dirty, insect got in my eye, somebody moving in the crowd.

Threats? This I cannot imagine for a nano second. Yes, he does take too long. I never watch his matches live, as I fast forward after every point by 30 seconds but his behaviour towards other people is exemplary imho and I've watched every single match he's ever played. But yes he should be cautioned and disciplined for taking too much time I agree. He could cut out five seconds by stopping all his OCD flicks for one thing.

I wouldn't believe any of the nonsense the tabloids spout. They are far too involved in these people's lives. I hope that Nadal recovers well and that we see him at wimbie. That being said I hope the powers that be don't give into his demands about who should umpire his matches again.
Where did this come from? I have never thought he was gay. Why would you think that?
There is a lot of stuff out there. Google "Is Nadal gay". Mind you if you Google "Were the moon landings faked?" You get a lot of stuff as well. It doesn't matter one whit. I just think it's sad if he is and can't be open about it in the 21st Century.
A year ago, when Rafael Nadal and his dodgy wrist were bundled out of the US Open in the fourth round and Roger

El Mundo has asked Rafa what he thinks about Catalonia's upcoming referendum on independence. He claimed he couldn't see Spain without it. It reminded me of when Scotland had a referendum and Andy was asked how would be voting.
Except that Andy was for independence and Rafa is against it.

Nadal’s health status will impact the year-end race for No. 1 with Federer trailing by 1,960 points. There are 3,000 possible points available for winning Basel, Paris and the ATP finals in London.
While Federer is best on fast surfaces and more rested with 48 total matches played in 2017, Nadal has logged 75 total matches with his more gruelling baseline tactics.

Poor Raffa having to withdraw from the wtf. I wanted goffin to win yesterday just because I was there and wanted to see goff win one, but I still wanted Raffa to get his first finals trophy. I think for many players it cements the no 1 of course having to withdraw is not the same as losing to the number 2 in the finals. I still remember nadal face when he got the year end no 1 but was whipped by djoko the no 2 in the final. It will still hurt him to leave though. It seems a full season is a struggle. Perhaps futher reductions next year. I can't see him making Oz but there is time I guess.

Glad for nadal that it's final sorted and over so he can move on
In an interview afterwards, Rafa repeated what he's been saying for years: that every time an athlete has a doping test, it should be announced immediately that so-and-so has had a doping test and the result was negative/positive. That is the only way to complete openness, and would put a stop to all these unfounded rumours (Bachelor had alleged that when Rafa was out with injury, he was really serving a 'silent ban'. She had believed rumours put about by Fed fans, but the ITF confirmed that Rafa has never failed a test.) However the powers that be have never agreed to his suggestion.

I completely agree, Jerry. I used to really like Rafa but over recent years became pretty irritated by him, however anything I dislike (tics, slow play, strong comments to umpires) are always things I've seen with my own eyes. I wouldn't dream of calling any player a cheat without irrefutable evidence, but in our social media era far too many people think they can say whatever they like and damn the consequences. Lives and careers being destroyed on mere allegations. I commend Rafa for taking this stand.
With Rafa's 32nd birthday approaching at the beginning of June and his hugely successful 2017 ending with him again troubled with knee problems at last month's ATP Finals, even the most loyal fan of the Majorcan cannot hide away from the fact retirement cannot be that far away. :pirate:

'Top seed Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this week's Mexican Open in Acapulco after aggravating the leg injury that forced him out of the Australian Open last month.
The world No 2, who was due to face fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday, said he felt a sharp pain during his final training session on Tuesday and decided not to compete on the advice of his medical team.
Doctors have told me that it is impossible to play, regardless of whether it hurts,' said Nadal. 'There is a significant risk of increasing the injury and I have no choice.
'I was well prepared to play and I had hopes of doing something important here.'

I'm beginning to feel really concerned for Rafa's future in the game.
Starting from the 2017 Swiss Indoors event in Basel, Rafa has withdrawn or retired from 18 of his past 19 tournaments on hard courts. That includes retiring during the fifth set of his 2018 Australian Open quarter-final with Marin Cilic, and after two sets of his 2018 US Open semi-final with Juan Martin del Potro.
The one hard court tournament Nadal has completed over this period was the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada; he won that, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

Rafa's getting married! I've always really liked his girlfriend, now fiancee, she's the only one of the top wags who genuinely carved out her own path. Good for her.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be (must have missed her career ). I'm not criticising - to each their own - I just relate more easily to Xisca.
