The waiting has been so worthwhile, the murraycoasters so tolerable.
Because Andy has finally won his maiden Grand Slam!!!
:trophy:

Massive congratulations Muzzah!!! It's been wonderful to watch.

I couldn't keep my eyes open any more from the start of the 4th ... Something made me wake up outside so I stole a look.
Never before will we have to endure slamless "history" lesson of how many years it has been since we had a slam winner.
I always said he would win his first in a hard court, and that it would most likely be USO and that this is where he feels most comfortable.

I don't even feel bad that he's won in an outstanding year for British Sport ... SPoTY is insignificant this year I think.

Irritatingly my Sky Plus recording stops at 5-2 in the decider but I am sure I will see it everywhere today.

Well done champ.

Huge congratulations to Andy on a fabulous win - so worth staying up until 2 am for.

There were places in that match where a lesser player might have given up the ghost as Nole fought his way back, but despite quite a few people on my timeline apparently giving up on Muzz when he lost the 4th set, things have changed this year (not much - they didn't need to change much), and I knew he'd either win in that final set or die (at least figuratively) in the attempt. He certainly never gave up on himself and I was very happy but not that surprised to see him take control again in the 5th. As it was, he played it almost as clinically as he played the 3rd set against Fed at the Olympics and had won over the crowd completely by the end.

I guess it is quite appropriate that he won his first grand slam title by completing a century of grand slam match wins, exactly half of which have come in just the last 27 months, from the start of Wimbledon 2010! More proof, if any were needed, that he had been getting closer and closer and closer before this ultimate triumph. He is of course the only one of the big four to have beaten a previous slam winner to win his first slam too.

I wonder if Ivan Lendl was the missing piece that made the difference, or if the Olympics played a big part like the DC win did for Nole. Whatever it was, as Lendl himself said afterwards, in the end it was virtually all down to Andy himself - out on the court tonight and of course all those years of hard work and grafting (as Mo Farah would put it!) he has done to get to this stage.

To see Andy do what lots of us believed he would do but so many didn't was fantastic and very moving ... not to mention the perfect way to end the best ever summer for a GB sports fan, let alone a GB tennis fan!

Just think ...

Less than a month before the Olympics, Andy became the first Brit for 74 years to reach the Wimbledon men's singles Final and Jonny Marray the first Brit for 76 years to win the Wimbledon men's doubles Final ...

Less than a week before the Olympics, Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour de France ever ...

At the Olympics, GB won more gold medals than at any Games for over a century and Andy won its first tennis gold for that long too ...

GB then held indisputably the best Paralympic Games ever (I'm still buzzing from the 6 days spent there!)

... then just one day after the Paralympics finishes, Andy Murray becomes the first British man to win a grand slam singles title for 76 years!

If we'd been offered that at the start of June, I think we might have taken it (!) and what's even better is that this summer's biggest sporting heroes have been people who play by the rules and have clearly worked like crazy to fulfil their potential.

P.S.

Oh what a night! It is everything we hoped for, all we dreamed of and no less than Andy deserves!

I want to give Ivan Lendl a knighthood, he has made the difference, convincing Andy of all that we have always known: that he is a truly great player in a truly great era of Tennis.

We've waited, we've endured, we've laughed, we've cried, we've congratulated, we've commiserated, we've defended, we've encouraged, we've berated, together we have lived the highs and the lows. Now we can celebrate together, a wonderful victory and look forward to more of the same from our Grand Slam champion and Olympic Champion!

Well said everyone! What an absolutely fabulous night - I'm so bleary eyed at work this morning but don't care a jot!

Huge huge congratulations to Andy and the whole of Team Murray - they've worked their socks off over the years and the last 12 months especially have seen such an improvement in Andy's mental strength. I'm sure Ivan Lendl was the key to that - Andy just needed someone to tell him how to cope with these situations. I think also the difference being in 2 slam finals and winning the Olympics in a row helped with the pressure too but even so, when his legs were jelly in the 3rd and 4th, I was so worried his tension was going to get the better of him. I never doubted he'd win though and I'm so happy for him, for the team and for all of us who've been through the highs and the lows.

One person on my FB timeline doesn't care .... but then she hasn't been able to get over the ABE comment ... silly woman ... I'm sure Andy will have and will continue to win over lots of new fans after such a monumental victory.

What a match - what a player - happy happy day :)

Very many congratulations to Andy! And to his team as well!

It has been such a privilege to watch Andy develop from a cramp-suffering teen to the US Open Champion! Some of the lows were very low, and how we all felt for him. The Murraycoasters have tested the nerves of even the toughest of British tennis fans! But his hardwork and determination, coupled with the undoubted talent he possesses, have brought their just reward.

In a year of so much sporting success, this is the icing on the cake! Such a shame that Andy couldn't be on the parade yesterday - but, hey, maybe he should have a parade all of his own!

So pleased I stayed up last might - I almost caved in, but decided I'd never forgive myself if I missed such a huge moment.

CONGRATULATIONS ANDY MURRAY - WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF YOU :trophy:

I am so proud to be British right now and we have at last a No 1 tennis player to be soo proud of as he is a Grand Slam champion.
All those years of hard work and never stop believing have paid off and this is only the beginning, still only 25 there are plenty more where last night came from have a feeling its the start of a fantastic run of wins. Wimbeldon next year maybe even the Aussie Open and beyond.
Hugh congratulations Andy and your team.

Dearest Andy

Congratulations on achieving your first slam at the US Open 2012. As a fan from overseas (Switzerland) I have rooted for you in events round the world for years and I have seen you in live some of the most impressive stadiums.

Days like today make all that effort and money spent being a fan worth it. You are a role model to me.

You have shown you should never give up on your dreams and to keep going through the good times and bad.

Enjoy this Andy because you have earned the right to be in the history books as a Grand Slam Champion.

Right - the matchsticks have done their job at work and I'm off home to bask in some of Andy's glory - need to read/watch/listen to everything possible this evening. Even Mr P, when I got into bed at 2.45 am, woke up and cheered and then wanted a match report - no chance I needed some sleep! But I couldn't sleep as I was buzzing. Silly me, for some reason I didn't think to record it *sigh*. Never really felt Andy was going to lose even after sets 3&4 - there's just a look he gets now and it's game on, no messing. Mr P has even said we need to open a bottle tonight to celebrate :dance::dance:

Didn't see this thread this morning. Not surprising really on such little sleep but I really don't care, I would not have missed that match for the world even though I could barely watch at times!

Like many people on here I have supported and believed in Andy from the start and shunned all the negativity. Well now he has done it, he has won his first grand slam just as I knew he would (just didn't know when). I truly believe this is the springboard and he will go on to win more and become world no 1.

So, so proud to call myself a fan of Andy Murray. You know what, we should arrange a get together to celebrate ......

Andy first came on to my radar at Queens 2005, although I was aware he had been junior champion at the us open the previous year. At Wimbledon I was there for his third round match as a wildcard against David Nalbandian. At the time I admit a consolation prize for Tim Henman's early exit but I soon started to sit up and take notice!

And then I was hooked, religiously following Andy's matches, staying up late or waking myself up in the early hours to cheer him on. I remember the genuine shock when he won his first title - San Jose, beating ARod in the semi then Hewitt in the final. Doesn't sound much now but at the time it was HUGE! I was so happy for him.

And to this year, I cried when he made Wimbledon final and once again I found myself sobbing last night. This time he was serving for the championship, the long awaited slam. This time it was his time, his time and our time, at last.

Andy Murray I salute you, a fierce competitor and magnificient champion. No one deserves it more and I could not be prouder. In an era of greatness you delivered and outclassed the best. Enjoy it to the full as you have created history and fantastic memories.

Congratulations :cheer:

Good to see this in lights! Absolutely fantastic that Andy is now a grand slam champion and he came through a few tests throughout the tournament to claim the honour. All the more remarkable that he won the Us Open it an olympic year when he wasn't able to do his usual training in Miami after Wimbledon and he had to cope with a variety of conditions! Though my instinct some years ago was that his first slam would come at Flushing Meadows which proved to be correct. From the early days knew that Andy was something special and believed he could win slams but in a tough era it was going to be challenging. Whilst I believe Ivan Lendl has made a difference in the quest it was Andy himself who had to be strong to achieve his goal.

Following Murray has been a real pleasure as he is such a creative player. There may have been highs and lows along the way but being a fan involves taking the rough with the smooth and awesome we now have this great moment. So happy for Andy as he deserves all the plaudits!

Congratulations Andy I am so pleased for you and very proud of you. Yesterday I wore my "I Love Andy Murray" tshirt to work. I bought a tin of Celebrations and took a photograph of Andy holding the trophy from the tv, printed a big size photo and put it on front of the tin and left it in the main office. Everyone was pleased for him and I kept getting emails from friends and family from early in the morning - it felt as if I had won.

Isn't it lovely that we, his devoted followers are so happy. we have suffered the Murraycoasters, cried at his losses at Finals but always supported him. Now we can say that he did it!!!! We believed he would, we never doubted and he's done it. You are all fantastic supporters and I always knew that I could turn to you in the bad times and celebrate with you all in the good times. We have shared his success this summer and can honestly say that as the true and loyal supporters of a great Olympian and a Grand Slam Champion we have been vindicated. We have stood by him ......and he has not let us down. All hail, Andy Murray.....Olympic Champion and US Open Champion

Loving it all! Andy will never know how his successes over this summer has brought much light to my life when all else is black. Does anyone else remember a post - just after Wimbledon - that said some astrologer said Federer's stars were all aligned good at that time but would then decline and Andy was just coming into a 'golden' period which would last til the end of the year - or did I dream it??

Yes, clancy, I do remember that. I also remember someone posting that they had read a prediction by an Indian seer who had said that Andy would have an extremely successful 2012 - particularly the second half of the year. I do hope it lasts into 2013 though!!

I am just happy that he's shut his doubters up! Someone said to me in July that he was arrogant!! I can't think of a less arrogant sports-person but I do know a very arrogant tennis player two above him in the rankings! Obviously when the AO, FO and Wimbledon come along next year, I'll be hoping for great things but for now I just want him to enjoy his achievements and keep happy and healthy; one thing I would really like to see in 2013 is his wedding to Kim!

I could not have put it better Supergran. Yes "suffered" "cried" and frustrated at times when he should have won but did not. I always say in the end "It was not to be" This is his moment now.

I never doubted he would win a grand slam. I'm so proud of him.
All the heartbreaks and tears were worth it in the end.

This week has been special. All these years of wondering if he'll ever manage it, and now he finally has. :)

His tennis career has lit up some of the darkest moments of my life - including this week where (without wanting to get too dramatic) at one stage I thought I was having a heart attack and nearly rang the Samaritans - that made sense to me at 4:00am when it happened!! ;)

Andy is a special player, and always will be. I make a point of savouring every Andy match because I think he's the type of player who comes along once in a generation. I hope that he will inspire other people as he's inspired me - to be the best that he can be, to make the most of every moment, to strike out and live the dream, to believe in himself and to take opportunities when they come. I will be a Murray fan from now until the day I die, because of his talent, and because of Andy as a person. Thank God that we have him, and here's to many more moments of glory and triumph as he rewrites the history books to become, quite possibly, the best British tennis player of all time. :)

And as a side note, my hope is that one day, somewhere in Britain, perhaps at Wimbledon - there will be a statue of Sir Andy Murray. :)

Take care... :)

Here are some photos I took the day Andy won (and the morning after). Sorry it's taken me sooooo long to stick these on here but my computer blew up. The headline on our Globe and Mail newspaper, the gold medal stamps that Lizzi kindly sent me, I framed them and they're over the piano in our study and me during Andy's trophy presentation.

I meant to tell you all that I won £85 from betting that Andy would win the us open!

Felt very smug picking up the winnings especially as I had bet on him winning a grand slam twice before - I have never bet

Upon anything before this!

Just curious, what are the odds of Andy winning a Golden Career Slam? Or for that matter, a Golden Calendar Slam?

Very slim I would imagine coz he'd have to win the French and I can't see him doing that right now altho' you never know with Lendl by his side..

Sorry, I can't help AA.
But - think I've read somewhere that nobody in recent tennis history has managed to win their first 2 slams in consecutive events - including Federer in 2003. So that must be a tricky thing to pull off.
Here's hoping Andy can re-write the record books!

Haven't checked but I wonder if the consecutive events were on the same surface? Think Fed won Wimbly first didn't he? So USO next would have been hard court. So for Andy it's hard court at USO to hard court at Oz Open........just saying.........not jinxing or anything.

Nobody had done the Olympic/US Open double before, so if Andy can do that for the first time he can do the US double/Oz Open double for the first time.

Linda

Andy could well win Oz too! Actually I think Oz is wide open. It could be won by any of the top four, or even by one of the players just outside such as Tsonga or Berdych (I don't think it would be Ferrer as he seems to be unable to beat either Fed or Rafa).

To think he was only two sets away from having the Wimbly-Gold Medal-USO triple. Darn that Federer!

One could probably also say darn that weather - as if the final had continued outside there would have been less of an advantage for Fed.

Still can't believe his year, has been amazing to get a slam title AND olympic gold. I know it's wierd but I almost feel a sense of relief for myself not just him. It's just lovely to see someone get all the rewards they deserve, no more nearly man. Really makes everything worthwhile.
