This will be Andy's next event on the ATP Tour.
He's not down to play either of the ATP250's that start the 'Asian swing' (Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur) and which precede this event. It means he'll drop the 250 points gained when he won the title in Bangkok last year.
So, this is his only warm-up for the Shanghai Masters 1000 which starts the week after Tokyo/Beijing.
For now he's probably going to take a short break before heading East in time to acclimatise and hopefully defend his title here in Tokyo.
Who needs a warm up - he's hot!! ;)
Stuart Fraser's article in the Herald says Andy & Jamie are planning to defend their doubles title in Tokyo too.
The Asian swing last year was amazing - I remember following livescores in class and running back home to catch some of his matches.
Let's hope he has similar success this time. It would be lovely if he beats softballs in the final to turn around their H2H.
GO ANDY!

Is it just me or do I suddenly see very little danger in a 32 draw for a GS winner. Birdy yes. Two or three do not match up that well for Andy (Stephanek for example) but otherwise, up to Andy how well he does!
It's certainly a strong field for a 500 event.
If the "Grand Slam Winning" Andy turns up, he ought to do very well.
Hopefully this Andy will turn up more and more often now!!

Well if you look at this draw and look at the Beijing one, I think Andy chose well as a warm-up for a Master's, which I suspect he will want to do well in, as he mentioned in his interviews that while the GSs and Olympics have been good, his Master's performances have not been at the same level.

Obviously I want Andy to do well here and Shanghai, though I don't think I'd swap his Olympic and Us Open wins for a few Masters! Whilst Andy done really well in the Asian swing last year he possibly overplayed, the injury at the World Tour finals was unfortunate.

Yes, I was thinking yesterday what I'd love to see Andy achieve now, and for me it would be to win the WTF in London.

Yes, I was thinking yesterday what I'd love to see Andy achieve now and for me it would be to win the WTF in London.
My thoughts exactly RL - what an end to a fatastic year that would be. After the semi he played against Rafa 2 years ago which was just about the best match of the tournament, I'm sure that Andy loves it there and so want to do well. And we now know that when Andy 'so wants' - Andy can get !!!
I just hope Andy can stay fit for the rest of the season. I'm sure if he's fit he will have as good a shot as he has ever had at the WTF.
I agree with winning the WTF as top priority for the rest of the season, although I really think Andy should win at least one masters event in the year as a top player. It would also help him in his bid for No. 1 around spring next year

He's not defending any points at the WTF either. Who knows? With a good run enhanced by his boosted confidence and Champion aura, why not wish for a Masters (or two) and the WTF?
Back to earth: Tokyo. So Rafa is playing then?

Back to earth: Tokyo. So Rafa is playing then?
Where did you hear that? Rafa is not on Tokyo entry list, and the last I heard he wasn't even certain for the WTF. In fact in an interview in the Daily Mail this morning posted on another forum, he is quoted as saying he "hopes" to be back for Qatar and the Aussie Open, that "is the biggest goal for me".

There's a rumour doing the rounds that he might play doubles for the Davis Cup Final but that may be wishful thinking from Rafa/Spanish fans rather than based on fact. As Madeline has posted the report in the Daily Mail suggests he's much more likely to focus on 2013 and be 100% fit to play from the New Year.
That's borne out by further interviews with L'Equipe:
Carole Bouchard @carole_bouchard (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard) "I'm not worried about my fitness. My goal is to start next season in perfect shape, in Doha then at the Australian Open", Nadal in L'Equipe

Andy's comments about the tournament
Japan is the first stop on my Asia swing this year and I’m really looking forward to it. We were googling sushi restaurants at the beginning of the year, which tells you something about why we’re so pumped to be coming to the city. Home of the best sushi in the world, and a very good tournament too. I played well here last year, so hopefully I’ll be able to produce a similar performance in 2012.
I hope he doesn't try that fish that can kill you if it's not cooked properly :sofa:

Really weird - Gilles Simon has beaten Tipsarevic this morning to reach the Final of the Bangkok ATP250 but at this event (a 500) they play each other in R1.
I predict revenge for the Serbian ... and he's potentially Andy's Semi-Final opponent here.
Depends on Raonic I guess.
It'll give Andy some good matches for practice here ahead of Shanghai that's for sure!
Not an easy draw but then when does Andy ever get an easy draw?

While Andy has shown he can beat anybody, anywhere, now, not the easiest of first round matches. Andy has had an "all or nothing" pattern at times i.e. going out first round or then doing well in tournaments, so this is certainly one where he will have to be on his game from the very first match. No gentle paying himself in this time round.
C'mon Andy! Show us the confidence and self-belief of a slam winner tempered with the respect and preparation for the opponent!

Pretty tough facing Monfils in the opening round but an in form Andy should outclass Gael. Whilst Monfils was out of action for a while he did reach the semis in Metz beating Kohlschreiber along the way. Tough for Tipsy and Giles too!

Does anyone know for definite if Andy has a bye or is playing Karlovik?
Very difficult to know. The initial information that Monfils had withdrawn to be replaced by LL (implying Lucky Loser) and that would be Karlovic (the highest ranked Lucky Loser from FQR) came via well known journalists. If Ivo couldn't play then, in order, Petzschner, Pospisil and Lajovic if they were still in Tokyo and available.
The BBC report was updated at 17.15 UK time (23.15 Tokyo) so perhaps they had some late night information.
There's nothing on the ATP site (which would usually update with this sort of information) or the Japanese tournament website and on no other tennis forums.
The only possible explanation is that Karlovic has an injury so cannot play and the other 3 LL's have already left Tokyo to prepare for their next events.
That would force a Walkover (rather than the Bye stated by the BBC).
Sallydaisy
01-10-2012, 21:27
what a mess!
Isn't it just.
Maybe the BBC and ESPN read LL as Lukas Lacko instead of Lucky Loser ...
Or the TENNIS journos this morning read LL as Lucky Loser rather than Lukas Lacko.
I'm getting up early tomorrow just in case!
You would think that at least the ATP website ought to have the correct info on it.
Yes, I'll try and be around just in case - and there's Laura's match to follow too.

Yep, I think it'll be livescoring though 'cos no TV coverage tomorrow of Tokyo.
For anyone who hasn't seen the Tokyo R1 match thread there's increasingly reliable information that Andy will play tomorrow against a Lucky Loser.

The Chardy v Wawrinka match has just started (winner plays Andy in the Qtr Final).
If they play 2 sets it could be all over in an hour or so (as was the prior match between Monaco and Dimitrov which Pico won 6'1, 6'2 putting Andy on court around 09.00 our time.
If they play 3 sets it might be another 2 hours before Andy starts his match.

It's a very early start for anyone wanting to livescore the R1 Mens Doubles Muzzahs match.
I'd say around 06.30hrs UK time.
I bet the tournament director wants Chardy & Wawrinka off quickly, as well as us! On today's revised OOP here (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Scores/Schedule.aspx?EventId=329&Year=2012&Seq=5) they're hoping to get two doubles matches under the roof this evening after Andy's match, and it's already 6.10pm!

Just found the revised OOP (see below). Presumably the rain has stopped play on all the outside courts. The good thing about the doubles is that with CTB's they're likely to take less time BUT it could be gone midnight before they finish in Japan.

No sign yet of the OOP for Friday. It might be delayed until the end of play today because there's a Japanese player currently in action (Nishikori v Robredo) and another one to follow (Ito v Tursunov) so they'll probably wait to see if those 2 make it into the QF before assigning playing times.
I'd guess (since Andy has to play QF's in both doubles and singles) that Andy might play his QF first up and his doubles later on. However, as #1 seed they might want him to play an early evening match and get the doubles done first thing - not sure that'd be good for Andy tbh.

Andy plays 2nd on Centre Court tomorrow after the first match starting at 11.00 local, 03.00 UK.
Estimate he'll be on court around 05.00 UK time depending on Raonic v Tursunov.
Doubles with Jamie not before 07.00 UK time but it'll depend on when his singles finishes and he'd probably have an hour 'suitable rest' so that is more likely to be nearer 08.00/09.00 UK.

Dimitry Tursunov has made it to the QF in Tokyo after beating Ito of Japan in 2 sets.
It's a while since the Russian has made it this far in any ATP tournament let alone a 500.
He's been exiting in R1 most of this year and ended up playing a few Challengers.

Surprised Milos got the W vs Tipsy. But Tipsy seemed a bit flat to me.
Tipsy looked good the 1st set , then not so much , and Milos improved as he went along .
I love Kei's gamestyle - really pleased he got the win today. I read that Berdych has never beaten him on hardcourts - there definitely must be a matchup issue there.

Great win by Nishikori. Amazing how often someone has played out of their skin to beat Andy and lose their next match unexpectedly.
And Kei wins the title!
The match was a 3-setter: 7-6(5) 3-6 6-0
How great for the home player to win this!
Yes - brilliant for Nishikori in front of his home crowd. Great returning and amazing speed around the court - again reminiscent of someone we know??? Raonic really struggling to find his form today.
I'm so pleased for Kei. :) He was outstanding against Berdych and Baghdatis and now again today too. I love his game - fantastic returning and he takes the ball so early. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 8 before too long.

You're right. Kei did say, in fact, after the US Open that he'll draw inspiration from Andy's win and his improved forehand to follow in his footsteps and go up in the rankings as he thinks their games are very similar, and I certainly believe he plays like Andy a bit.
-------
I'm so disappointed for Milos. I wanted him to win but he clearly didn't play his best tennis today, at least not as well as he did yesterday.
But I'm equally happy for Kei as he played superbly all week and to do it in front of the home crowd is extra special. Well done to him.
Great result for Kei! Really pleased. And a podium for Kobayashi in F1 makes it a good day for Japanese sport on home turf
Good result for Kei, really enjoyed the match. It was good to watch with no pressure about who would win. I think he does have a similar style to Andy.
Delighted that Kei won. I recorded the match but they switched channels at 3-0 in the last set so I missed all the excitement at the end - so very annoying! I agree Kei does have a similar style to Andy - what a great win for him.

Delighted to hear that Kei won, as there is something about Milos that I don't like.
I sincerely hope Milos didn't play his best (anything like best) tennis today or with the scoreline that Kei achieved it makes Andy's loss yesterday look embarrassing! Also rather worrying. Did anyone see it?

Raonic certainly didn't play well. At least not in the 3rd set. And he played nowhere near as well as he did yesterday at any point. Maybe he was a bit tired, I'm not sure.

Raonic played his final yesterday. He played out of his skin against Andy - it was always going to be difficult for him to maintain that standard and he didn't today. Not taking anything away from Kei as he played very well. His style is quite similar to Andy's, which is probably why I like him - that and his engaging personality.

Milos has a winning record against Andy, is that why?
(Have to confess I don't really like Raonic either.)
I was delighted to see Kei win as I love his tennis. He plays very much the same way as Andy. Raonic did not play well today just as on previous occasions he has difficulty maintaining form throughout a tounament. I also do not like him. I woke up last night and came to the conclusion it may be that he reminds of Federer-smug. Dealing with people all my working life I just have a gut feeling about this. Kei has also said that he has been inspired by Andy's win at USO.

Glad that Kei took the title in his home country. I don't dislike Milos and think he is a talent but find Kei's game more entertaining. Whilst there are some similarities with Andy he'll obviously never be in the same class. I was most surprised Milos was bagelled in that final set, though he obviously couldn't produce the semi form.

Yes, good for Kei. Great to see a local guy win the big one. He must be chuffed to bits.
Disappointed for Milos coz he had a 0-3 lead in that first set tb and could have won it in straights but then Andy could have won the semi too coz he had 2 mps. C'est la vie. Still, he had a nice run to the final beating Tipsy and Andy - pretty good!
I really don't know why people don't like Milos? He's such a nice polite guy, doesn't fly off the handle during matches, remains calm, says lovely things about his opp's. He made a lovely runner-up speech today and was so nice to Kei and the Japanese people. What does a player have to do? Don't get it.
I'd thought the same about Raonic/Federer! Still think it should have been Andy/Kei final and wouldn't have been too disappointed at a Kei victory at that.

He was a bit arrogant during the USO, that's probably why.

I don't dislike Milos as a person, but like -J- say's I don't care for his tennis, just doesn't excite me!
I thought Milos' tennis against Andy this time was something special, and as I said earlier I definitely retract the "only a serve" label I gave him. His backhand has improved and his volleying is, at times, magnificent. His ground strokes too were amazing. Just don't want him to keep beating Andy.
Thought he was overawed at the USO in his postmatch interview, so not sure where the arrogance was.
I agree with you pabbers - Raonic played a very varied game against Andy which surprised me. Although I think part of that was that Andy wasn't on the top of his game and so allowed Raonic to shine. I think the arrogance before the USO match with Andy is what has put a lot of people off - that and some of his post match comments in Tokyo. He may be a little less arrogant after his 0-6 last set against Nishikori though!

Milos is NOT arrogant! Give the lad a break.
He's a Canuck. He couldn't be arrogant if he tried. ;)
