There's some query as to whether our Grand Slam winner Jonny Marray will be playing at London. Short answer is - don't know!
:p

The ATP selection process for the World Tour Finals is complex so I've posted it in full below. Given that Marray/Nielsen are not playing together at all at the moment it'll be interesting to see if they play in London. Will try to find out more regarding their participation.

Fleming and Hutchins would need to win between 2000 and 2500 to be secure of a place or close to being the "9th Men". Long shot but they're in sight of 250 if they win tomorrow (and definitely 150 for reaching the Final) and there's another 3250 winner points up for grabs in the next 5 weeks.
:)

Colin and Ross won't qualify now :(. Don't think they'll be competing in Shanghai as they only just made the cut for Beijing. They've had a great season, but missing the entire clay court season and not having a good run at Wimby or US open really hindered their chances

Pity for Colin/Ross but with the setback earlier in the season was going to be a tough ask.

DOUBLES RACE TO LONDON - update (not including todays points from Shanghai)

Fleming/Hutchins have moved up 2 places to 11th.
They will almost certainly move up to 10th next Monday because Marrero/Verdasco lost in R1 to Lindstedt/Tecau (beaten in R2 today by Flemchins).

Freddie Nielsen hasn't played at all since Metz in September so not sure what's going on there.
Bhubop look set to hold on to the 8th spot at the moment.
Flemchins would need to overtake them somehow in the next 2 weeks to be assured of being Alts.

DOUBLES RACE TO LONDON as at 22/10/12

Fleming/Hutchins have moved up another 2 places to 9th!!! However, 10th ranked Marray/Nielsen qualify ahead of them (and 8th placed FyrMat) because they won a Grand Slam this year.

Currently the 8 pairs likely to be in London are those currently in 1st to 7th place + Marray/Nielsen. The first Alts will probably be the Poles who are 1000 points ahead of Fleming and Hutchins but those 2 could be the 2nd Alts on stand-by.

Sooo close for Flemchins. I really hope they somehow make it.

I'm not so sure about the fairness of direct entry by winning a GS. In theory a team could just play once together and qualify whereas other teams who work hard together all year, making a career out of doubles, like Flemchins, then miss out.

What does everyone else think?

hfwardhouse
22-10-2012, 16:34
I tend to agree Caro .... and I see Granollers/Lopez have now qualified too.

supergran

Agree also...seems a tad unfair.

jaysee
23-10-2012, 14:45
They have to be in the top 20, so they are likely to need at least a few points from somewhere else - the 20th team currently have 1075 points. Also they had to play proper matches at Wimbledon, best of 5 sets and none of this no-AD nonsense, so they certainly had to work for it. I just wish Flemchins could have made it too!

Caro
24-10-2012, 13:23
I'm not saying they didn't work for it Jaysee but Flemchins play together all year whereas Nielsen and Marray don't. At least that is my understanding. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Unfortunately Flemchins missed a big chunk in the middle of the season through injury, otherwise they would almost certainly have made it this year.
