Sloane Stephens recovered from losing the first 8 games to oust Pliskova 0-6,6-4,6-1, however unfortunately fell short in the final. Still great week for Elina Svitolina who took the WTA champs title 3-6, 6-2,6-2 , even if she is still to excel at slams

Saw a fantastic final at Wimbledon between Aga and Serena a few years ago. Also remember a lot of perverts taking photos of her at Eastbourne!

Quite a young age to retire but I am she knows her body best.

Alis
14-11-2018, 18:24
I'll miss her too. In her heyday, Aga was probably one of the most versatile players on the women's tour. I think Andy said she was his favourite female player at one stage.

JAMES4578
14-11-2018, 21:25
Certainly was a fan of Aga's style(with so much variety and guile though at times could be challenge against big hitters) and pity she feels it is best to retire now. However has been struggling somewhat lately and I guess understandable, would have loved her to take a slam but think that chance had likely gone in the past few years. Was tough against Serena in her only slam final appearance at Wimbledon in 2012 (though did push her to 3), the following year may have missed her best chance when she lost a long semi to Lisicki (the year Bartoli won).

Donna Vekic having a great week in St Petersburg. Today she beat Zvonareva (herself having a bit of a resurgence this week) to reach the final when she will play Bertens. Must be her reward for sending the massive get well teddy to Andy!

JAMES4578

Upsets in last 16 of Indian Wells as top 2 seeds Osaka and Halep out,Simona to to Vondrousova 6-2 in 3rd whilst Bencic crushed Naomi 6-3,61. Venus Williams put out 3rd seed Kvitova 6-4 in decider in 2nd Round and now into quarters .Serena though retired after losing first to Muguruza in 3rd R, stated dizziness and fatique, Gabrine then put out Bertens 6-4 in 3rd to advance.

Bencic's good run came to an end with 6-4,6-2 loss to kerber (german also beat Venuzs in straights) but some good form lately. Angie will face surprise Canadian finalist Bianca Vanessa Andreescu who demolished Muguruza and put out Svitolina 6-4 in 3rd-could be interesting one.

JAMES4578
17-03-2019, 23:21
Amazing performance from Andreescu who beat Kerber 6-4,3-6,6-4 to take the title, playing bold tennis and having a variety at her disposal. Kerber seemed to be turning it around and had first break in 3rd but whilst Bianca began to struggle physically she found another gear to finally get over the line, great mental toughness! Angie though was a bit too defensive overall.

18-03-2019, 00:56
Well I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thrilled for Bianca! For her! And for Canada. And for her parents' country of Romania. And the fact she's only 18 is incredible.

But I am (again) really disappointed this was not televised on Canadian television. And I had to take my husband to the airport so could only follow the match on livescore and as it wasn't on tv I couldn't PVR it to watch later. But when I got home I watched 15 mins highlights on YouTube so at least that was something. And she played GREAT!!!

I just can't believe in this day and age we have to deal with such nonsense.

JAMES4578
24-03-2019, 17:35
Bianca has beaten Kerber again (this time in 3rd Round of Miami) 6-4,4-6,6-1! Osaka also out early, going down to 27th seed Hsieh 4-6,7-6,6-3, Serena pulled out with knee injury before 3rd Round. Andreescu though out in last 16 as she retires with shoulder injury whilst trailing Kontaveit 1-6,0-2. However it was her 35th match this year.

Ash Barty took the biggest title of her career 7-6,(7-1) 6-3 over Karolina Pliskova, well done! Pliskova put out Halep in the semis 7-5,6-1 but Barty took control once she fought back from 1-3 down to take 1st breaker as Pliskova faded. 15 aces for the Australian in the match in an impressive all court game. The Ladies line-up is currently:

However, it's not yet clear if Osaka will play her Semi-Final with a series of tweets between tennis media folk as follows:-

Very strange. The cause is very just and its admirable but now for her to play seems a backtrack? Imagine an athlete in a 15k ITF posting a message and taking a stance in a similar way. Defaulted and fined would be the result.

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/54051989) - Bianca Andreescu's open letter to Billie Jean King & Original 9 before 50th anniversary

Fifty years ago, nine female tennis players - including Billie Jean King - risked their careers by signing up for a new tournament. Despite the threat of being banned from Grand Slams, they made the move to try to improve pay and opportunities in the women's game. Their actions on 23 September 1970 eventually led to the creation of the WTA Tour, and then later equal prize money at the Grand Slams and other events, making tennis one of the most equal sports.

Here, 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu writes an open letter to those players, known as the "Original 9": Peaches Bartkowicz, Rosie Casals, Judy Dalton, Julie Heldman, King, Kerry Melville Reid, Kristy Pigeon, Nancy Richey and Valerie Ziegenfuss.

A few good contests in Rome, Gabrine Muguruza put out Victoria Azarenka 3-6,6-3,6-4 in the quarters a few switches in momentum during the contest but Vika started to struggle somewhat on serve with Gabrine pilling on the pressure with her returns. Muguruza lead 3-1 in the 3rd before Vika came back for 4-3 but there was another charge from the spaniard. Along the way Vika inflicted a double bagel on the Australian Open champion Sofia kenin and was taken to a 1st set breaker by Kasatkina before she injured her ankle running for a drop shot and had to retire.

In the semis however the top seed Seed Simona Halep was the stronger coming through 6-3,4-6,6-4. Halep the more consistent and generally had the court craft to blunt the spaniard's bigger weapons. However Muguruza made a fightback in the third from 1-5 but two doubles in last game ended her challenge. Halep will play 2nd seed Karolina Pliskova in the final (who has foundsome form after struggling on the Us hard courts) beating 12th seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-2,6-4. https://www.wtatennis.com/news/1836104/halep-slides-past-muguruza-into-rome-final

A disappointment as Pliskova retires trailing Halep 0-6,1-2. Signs that Karolina was was injured early on, left thigh strapped and when physio attended appeared to be an issue with her back. Simona though certainly was in form and takes first Rome title, even if not the way she would have wanted . https://www.wtatennis.com/news/1837632/halep-trimphs-in-rome-as-defending-champ-pliskova-retires

Emma has just edged into the top 20 in the WTA rankings today.

There is a caveat below from one of the regular tennis journalists on Twitter. (https://twitter.com/tumcarayol)

An interesting rankings day on the WTA with Indian Wells, Rabat and Rosmalen all off:
- Emma Raducanu makes her top 20 debut at #20
- Johanna Konta has dropped 39 places and is out of the top 100 at *#112*.
- Bianca Andreescu is down to #46
- Wang Qiang, top 30 pre-Covid, #102

He goes on to say
ATP Indian Wells 2019 points should have dropped... during IW, but the WTA have done a better job of getting old, stale points off the rankings since March. The ATP's decision to maintain 50% of points from certain events was overkill and their rankings are still clogged up.

Good for her for taking control over her life and not letting others expectations get in the way.

But I always thought if a player rubs out a ball mark then they are saying the ball was ok, so as the mark was on her side of the net, if the original call was out then it's either replay the point, or point conceded if she didn't have a play on the ball. If the original call was in and she's erased the mark then why would she do that. Any explanation or opinions

Found a video here https://www.tennis.com/news/videos/tearful-zhang-shuai-quits-amarissa-toth-after-dodgy-mark-sportsmanship-budapest

She rubbed out after the umpire got out of her chair and looked at it and said it was out. Looked like it was in on camera.

I found a match replay on Amazon Prime. The tennis.com video shows only part of the incident. There was a very long delay while the umpire's decision was disputed - had she looked at the correct mark? but play had resumed and at least one point more had been played before Toth deliberately walked across the court and rubbed out the mark - perhaps implying it had been in as the camera replay indicated. To me, this is just one more incident showing how necessary electronic line calling is.

If another point had been played, Toth has no case to answer. Her reaction after the match, however, is something else entirely

From the video-I see the ball from Zheng being called out. Umpire checks the mark, confirms the call. A lengthy dispute follows over the call, Supervisor comes on court and won't get involved in checking the mark. It's clear the umpire won't change her mind under pressure from Zheng. Then Toth, having had enough of waiting for the next point, erases the mark, which she is allowed to do although it's not 'the done thing'. The umpire could have said to Toth,,the point is still under discussion,,you shouldn't have erased the mark, replay the point. Zheng then quits the match, either through injury or upset. Toth (wrongly) celebrates the win before Zheng has left the court. She'll learn
