View Full Version : SHANGHAI MASTERS, R3: Andy downs Dolly 6'2, 6'2 (despite a cough), into the Quarter-Final
Sallydaisy
10-10-2012, 10:46
After a walkover into R3 Andy's first competitive match in Shanghai is against Dolgopolov.
Andy leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=D801) 3-0 which means he's worked out how to play and beat the Kiev born player who came through R2 with a 2 sets win over Gilles Simon in 1hr 15mns. Dolgopolov is currently ranked #20 (CH#13 Jan 2012) but his year has been up and down with a tour title in Washington, Final in Brisbane (where he lost to Andy Murray) and quite a few R1 or R2 losses in a lot of other tournaments.
Apparently Andy has been out on the show court practising but he'd probably benefit from a 'match' or 'set' played against another player. He might be well rested but perhaps lacking in match practise at Shanghai where he is defending Champion.
The match is scheduled for Thursday 11th October (as are the other 8 x R3 matches), time tbc

Yes, hope he can adapt to the courts quickly given the lack of an earlier round match. Fed certainly didn't benefit from the rest at the (?) USO........think it was there that he had a w/o. Anyway, wherever, it didn't help him at all.

Andy plays at "not before 11.00" UK time again.
Andy had a walkover against Tursunov in his first match in Shanghai last year and it didn't turnout so badly. ;)
Just an observation but Nishkori has played 4 matches (almost an entire tournament) since Andy lost his semi-final to Raonic and it's only Wednesday.
Andy had a good workout in Tokyo so he's had enough court play I hope and can get right into it tomorrow. GOOD LUCK ANDY
Good luck Andy!
Hope to see this one!

Whilst disappointed Andy didn't have a match today hopefully it won't be much of a factor in this contest and he will be used to the courts even though this will be his first competitive outing here. Dolgo can be tricky on his day and he has given Andy a tough match previously but on form Andy should have the measure of him.

Yes good luck Andy! If all goes well he will be into the QF and the problem then will be, as he has mentioned in the past, he will not have had any real rhythm practice as the Dog sends all kinds of stuff over the net. Dolgopolov beat Simon, and when Andy plays him I always feel it is excellent shot making practice for Andy!

I'm hoping its not too long as I have to go out early afternoon.
Dolgo is never an easy opponent - when he is in the mood - but Andy knows that and will have to concentrate from the outset which is no bad thing.
Serve your way into the next round Andy....cheering for you as always :cheer:

early break for Andy and he'll be serving at *2-1 after the change of ends.
Just what we needed! Now, no murraycoasters today please, Andy!

4-2* with Dolly serving.
Sallydaisy
11-10-2012, 10:34
DF from dolly takes it to deuce; Andy with a rocket return has Advantage, saved by a great serve from Dolly.
Error from Dolly and it's Ad again to Andy who then goes on to break again.
Andy looks a bit under the weather apparently ... ?cold, ?tummy
Anyway - he'll serve for the first set at 5'2.
Loads of Saltires in the audience today.
another kitkat :cheer:
Commies saying Andy is coughing a lot

We got home, I switched on the livestream, my husband watched one point - one which Dolgo won, and won well, said "he's a good player, he had Murray running all over". I ask you! One point - and he thinks he can see how Andy is playing!
Andy takes the first set 6-2
Sallydaisy
11-10-2012, 10:37
6-2 first set to Andy as he serves it out to love.
He's either coughing a lot or burping as if he's got a windy tum.

Great point to win that final rally!

Hmm, Andy muttering to himself when he loses a point. Think he wants to get this match over & be off court to sort out the cough. Whatever it is Dolly has just broken back and Andy is livid with himself and has just totalled his racquet (it took 2 goes though) earning himself a code violation.
Aussie Andy
11-10-2012, 10:53
Hmm. Come on Andy! Best of luck! You can do it!
Sallydaisy
11-10-2012, 10:55
Break for Andy to 30 for *3-2 and he's back in the driving seat - but he needs to hold his serve (and temper!)
Aussie Andy
11-10-2012, 10:57
Righto Andy, well done, you broke back, now focus on holding your serve so you can get off court quickly and see to your health.

Some call for Andy to be more aggressive, the by-product is a couple of "totalled" racquets. ;) So be it.
Andy coughing throughout the interview with Annabel Croft yet does she ask him about it?......

Not as historic a day as a month ago, but worth noting that in the past few hours 3 British tennis players have won matches to progress to ATP and WTA main event QFs (singles). When was the last time that happened (Heather and Laura also through to QFs in Osaka)? :)

Hardly broke sweat winning that one - pity he broke a racquet instead. But it does show he isn't prepared to coast and is striving for constant top play. Many a time he's lost his service and not reacted.
Great to see him in so much control of the match....onwards to Stepanek who is playing pretty well but Andy should handle it......just hoping Stan keeps it up against Fed

Per Steven from BT.net:
Steven @GBtennis (https://twitter.com/GBtennis) Bally+Anne Memphis 2010 was the only other time this century

Well done Andy but I am worried about his his cough. He seemed to be troubled with it throughout. Loved the comment from Lief who said he had seen Nole break racquets and not get a warning. Some quite brilliant play from our man. Keep going Andy!!!:clap:
Why has he started breaking his rackets like that? He NEVER did that.
Particularly now he might be getting even more coverage over here, its frustrating that people might judge him on that.
Didn't see the match, but impressed he got in done that swiftly. Given it being his first match and Dolgo getting to play a couple, I thought it'd be a tough one. :)

Maybe getting rid of his frustrations that way instead of swearing. He can win what ever he does.
Great match by Andy today, very comprehensive win. Trouble is I have run out of my monthly GB allowance, will have to pay extra to watch the rest of the week.

Nearly all other tennis players smash their racket, and no one makes a big deal of it, so can't see the problem. Fleming even said nothing wrong with it, do it and move on, better than Andy berating himself!
In Andy's interview on the BBC News 24, Andy said he had been sick since getting to Shanghai and he wanted to get the match over as quickly as possible.
I've also got no problem with Andy smashing rackets, so long as he's not doing it excessively I can't see the harm. Most of the other players do it from time to time, it seems to me like a good way to quickly get rid of any frustration freeing them to move onto the next game.
Oh dear, he probably picked up a virus on the flight - classic. Worrying though as he really didn't look at all well and the cough was almost constant. Poor souls, they all suffer one way or another at this time of year....as for the raquet, I don't see that as a problem either. I would rather he did that than bang his kuckles like he used to do.

Exactly, even the likes of Federer and Djokovic do this and noone makes a big deal out of it so why should it be different for Andy?

He's a lot bigger than I am!
Breaking rackets, for me, is a heck of alot worse than swearing.
Kids are going to swear these days whether Andy does or not, but smashing rackets? Yeah, the parents will love that.
Andy's never done it in the past, and thats for a good reason. I hope he stops it soon, its unessecary, particularly when your as good as Andy.

Yes, I don't like the racquet smashing either. He did it last week as well. Headscratcher.
Managed to avoid the result yesterday and watched it on sky+ when I got home. Easy peasey lemon squeezy
As for the racquet smashing, virtually ALL the players do it at some time. Rightly or wrongly, I have to say it doesn't bother me that much. I've never been a fan of 'iceman' tennis players. Always loved McEnroe while Borg left me cold.
Maybe his new psychologist has advised raquet smashing rather than swearing and mumbling and grumbling and dropping the shoulders. Better out than in?
Mr P reckons sports people are not nice when in competition mode - do we want Andy to be nice or win? Every one of the top players misbehaves at times. Even Rafa and Roger. We had Tim nice but........and he didn't manage a slam. I'm just thankful for Andy. I loved John McEnroe and he was nothing if not disrespectful to the umpires - so a bad example to kids? Maybe, but it made for great watching, great tennis and he was a champion. Show me a nice champion.

Rafa's never damaged a racquet. I don't care if most of the players have done it, it's ugly and sends a bad message to youngsters. Racquets are not inexpensive. I saw this one girl behave like such a diva last week at a tennis tournament my daughter attended. She behaved just like Sharapova and Bartoli combined and was obviously copying them in order to intimidate her opp's. Kids copy the pro's. And it's not pretty.

The intent is not there to actually break a racquet. It's frustration and nothing more. First thing to hand. Literally.

I don't want to say much about the racquet smashing except that I love going into school and the kids excitedly telling me they watched Andy on the news but when I know he has done the swearing and now the racquet damage I don't want to encourage them watching him. How can I condone this with Andy when I would never condone it for them?

the raquet smashing doesnt bother me , but I wish hed cut out the " F " bombs .

Being a massive Rafa fan I think I would have heard of that, and seen pictures on VB.
Always hated Andy's bad language too. Sadly, he's never going to change that as much as I'd like him to. But the racquet smashing is pretty new.
