View Full Version : SHANGHAI MASTERS 2012, QUARTER-FINAL: Andy rocks up a win against Radek!!! 4-6 6-2 6-3

Andy is one step closer to defending his title in Shanghai.
He took just 57mins to beat Dolgopolov, 6'2, 6'2, in their R3 match and Andy's first match of the tourney.
he played very well but was suffering from a cough and seemed to get frustrated easily when he lost points today - perhaps because he knew he needed to win quickly so he could dose himself up with cough mixture!

A couple of minutes after Andy had completed his match so did his QF opponent; Radek Stepanek, however, took 2.5hrs to beat John Isner in 3 sets so perhaps that puts him at a bit of a disadvantage physically? Although the 33yr old Czech players is reknowned for keeping himself fit ... and he'll need to be to beat Andy.

Muzzah leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=S694)by 4-1 so it's fair to say he knows how to deal with his tricky opponent who has been known to unseat top players in the past. Radek is currently ranked #41 but has a career high of #8 in 2006.
Match details below ...... they've only ever met at Masters events or a Grand Slam.

They'll play on Friday 12th October and for all sorts of reasons I'm hoping it'll be over by 12noon.

According to the schedule Andy plays Radek second on court tomorrow. First match is at 9am our time so probably around 11 ish - which is perfect for me.
He was obviously having breathing problems today with a nasty cough so hope he can dose himself up ready for that.

Jeannie is right. The first match in Shanghai starts at 14.00 local, 07.00 UK time. So Andy could be on anytime from 08.30 to 09.30 UK.

I've posted the OOP and edited the match thread title.

Stepanek is playing well and I think it may be a challenging one but Andy should come through providing the cold is under control. He lost to him in 2009 - wasn't that the year of the damaged thumb after 3 Davis Cup Matches ?
If so, the rec ord has been pretty consistent and Andy should outlast Radek who is 33 now and has had some tough 3-setters.
COME ON ANDY Stan made a dent in Fed today - you could finish it off next round

Will try to remember J.

I think this 2nd set between Berdy/JWT could go to a tie-breaker and it would be Murray's Law that JWT wins it and takes us into a 3rd set making us wait for Andy!!!
Berdy just held so it's 5-5 2nd set (he won the first 6'3) with Jo-Willy serving.

I haven't recorded today as won't have chance to watch it tonight. I'm at work and can't get in to live scores - work ban 'unsuitable' websites but haven't twigged this one yet so I can sneak on now and again.

Hopefully there will be people on here to keep me posted ... pretty please!

Andy serving first. He's still coughing but looks a little better than yesterday.

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:14
Radek is still going for the Serve/Volley tactic - one of the few who does these days.
It works and he holds to love so it's 1-1 in the first set.

Andy will have to keep Steps at the back of the court to try and break him - or come up with some zinging passing shots himself.

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:20
2-1 after a hold to 30 for Andy.
The stadium is almost empty - 10% of seats occupied.
Very poor for matches of this quality today.

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:22
2-2, Andy to serve next.

12-10-2012, 08:25

Andy's *0-40 after some great defence from Steps and poor shots from Andy.

12-10-2012, 08:28
Steps breaks, will serve at *3-2 after the change of ends.

Some poor serving from Andy in that game (only 3 out of 7 first serves in) gave the Czech a lot of chances.

Watching Andy on tennistv and the scoreboard for Flemchins doesn't leave much space on the desktop for the forum! ;)

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:31
Hiya Jaysee! I'm following Flemchins too ... flipping between tabs at the mo'.

Bit worried about Andy not being able to make inroads into Stepanek who now leads 4-2 in the 1st set.

david1610
12-10-2012, 08:32
Oh dear. Not like Andy to hit two basic shots over the baseline. He has not got his groove today. Officially worried.....
C'mon Andy!

david1610
12-10-2012, 08:35
Easy hold for Andy but it was as if Step is just waiting for his service game.
I remember when Andy lost to him I felt something, er, similar to how I do now.
He can be very tricky to work out when he is on song, and if he continues to serve the way he has, Andy may need three sets AND a lot of concentration.
C'mon Andy!

Jan
12-10-2012, 08:39
oh dear, just seen the score.

jaysee
12-10-2012, 08:40
Last time I saw Andy live he was playing Stepanek.... with Laura in the mixed at the Olympics. The score in a close match was 7-5 6-7 10-5 - hoping for the same result today!

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:42
Andy serving at *3-5. He seems to be trying to make Radek run a lot maybe in the hope of tiring him out? Could be tricky 'cos the Czech is a keep fit fanatic and he can run as fast as Andy!

RFS
12-10-2012, 08:42
grr - went to do a call... and came back to a 3-5 scoreline... huh?

Keep moving him around and keep the ball in play! C'mon Andy. Let's hope for lots of second serves.

But the Czech takes the first set 6'4 who has played extremely well.

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:53
Andy holds 1-0 2nd set. This will have to go to 3 if he wants to progress to the Semi's.

1-1 but Andy took that to 30 so he's obviously trying to get a break. Steps looked a bit rattled in that game.

clancy
12-10-2012, 08:58
Andy just isn't playing to his strengths the last couple of months and his mental state seems to have back-tracked - when does he link up with Lendl again? He needs to get himself sorted out or all the doubting Thomas's will be back in earnest and his excellent work will be forgotten. Do hope he can turn the end of the year around!

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 08:59
Monster crosscourt shot from Steppy; 15-15. Watch it Andy!

david1610
12-10-2012, 09:01
Stephanek has this incredibly effective slight delay on his forehand.
Andy seemed to start out with his standard current game using pace and seems to have to have dropped back to guile (against guile) as Step seems quite happy with dealing with the pace.
This is very dangerous as Andy is still playing, like he did in Tokyo, where he is not moving on to thinking about the next shot, but concentrating on his UEs.
Phew! An ace.

david1610
12-10-2012, 09:03
Just has to play every point in a return game well and hope he gets a couple of UEs from Step.
C'mon Andy!

Last couple of months? Where were you when he won his Grand Slam just a month ago???
;)

Andy has a cold so he's probably not feeling at his best out there; he was coughing constantly in his match yesterday and was still doing so at the beginning of this match.

+ Stepanek has already played 3 singles matches (and 2 doubles) compared to Andy's 1 (yesterday v Dolgo) so he's had a bit more court time AND he's clearly on a bit of a roll.

Give Andy a break - he's only lost one game so far this match.

david1610
12-10-2012, 09:12
Forget that game. Regroup. Think about serves and possibly taking a bit off the first to get it in as you are not serving brilliantly today. C'mon Andy!

Sallydaisy
12-10-2012, 09:14
Nice to see Andy win a point at the net instead of Radek!!!

15-15 on the Muzzah serve.
30-15
40-15 with a fantastic 2nd shot into the corner of the court.

3-2 to Andy.

Reef
12-10-2012, 09:15
Yes on second thoughts we should give him a break with Paris then the O2 coming up, he needs to be okay for the latter in particular and I'm sure that's in his mind.

david1610
12-10-2012, 09:15
Much easier to hold when you get the first serves in....
Oh well, Andy can still turn this around. Just needs to serve well and get that first break.

Yes on second thoughts we should give him a break with Paris then the O2 coming up, he needs to be okay for the latter in particular and I'm sure that's in his mind.

Steps played incredible reflex tennis to save that point; Andy was quick to the net but the Czech has so much experience of playing that sort of point from his doubles matches.

DEUCE.

Andy playing much much better and Steps has dropped his level.

Ooooh, Andy has 3 break points!
Steps saves 2 ...
Still a chance here for a break of serve.
But Andy hits it into the net ...
DEUCE

ERM, that was too good from Steps, much frustrated yelling from Andy!

But a good save from Muzzah and it's DEUCE.

And he holds - good defence from him, Andy couldn't quite take his chances.

Sorry - meant to type weeks (recovering from shingles and brain still frazzled); I watched his US Open success whilst one of my beloved dogs was passing away and will always be grateful to Andy for giving me some brightness during a very dark spell and it was of course something I'd wanted for him and felt he deserved for several years. Let's hope he can finish this match and give us all some more brightness before the year is out.

Well done Andy for turning that around when not feeling well. And thanks for all the updates. I was away from my desk at work so have just read through the thread on my return.

Hope he is feeling better for the semis tomorrow.

From reports on twitter Andy wasn't firing on all cylinders but the important thing is he found a way to win and glad threre were some impressive shots! Of course it is Fed he will need to step it up but surely he will be up for another clash. Hopefully he is feeling a bit better tomorrow.

I always believe Andy can turn things around these days but I must admit I had a dent in my confidence when he was broken in the third.
Magnificent job to turn it around...well done Andy.....and what a lovely message ! Ah

:cheer: was so relieved to see Andy managed the win - hope he's ok for the big match tomorrow - certainly looking like Fed will be on t'other side of the net.

I'm hoping he'll win the Basle title although I doubt it'll go down well with the Swiss crowd who regard it as being owned by a certain Mr Federer.
;)

Goodness me, I didn't realise Andy was playing Basel? He doesn't usually, does he? Well, whichever way it goes tomorrow that could be interesting.

Good match! Well done Andy, showing great fighting qualities!:clap:

Who's the Yank commentating on tennis tv? He was doing mine and I'm sure Robbie Koenig's head in with some of his comments..."Andy is not a good volleyer". Robbie gave him the chance to reconsider but he stuck by it.
Doug Adler. He talks a lot of rubbish, and it is quite an accomplishment to be able to make a rubbish statement then sometimes another contradicting the first which still manages to be rubbish.

Did you notice at this point he said a good volleyer would never miss a volley in that way, then a few moments later when Steps (who he had been lauding to the skies for his volleying skills) missed one equally badly, he was suddenly very quiet?

Great win Andy!

I had to leave at 4th game in the third! Also lost twitter on my phone for about half an hour. I was very pleasantly when my daughter found the score for me!

Can't stand Doug Adler and the other American, Sam Gore, who sounds JUST like him. I wish they'd dump them. The rest of the tennistv guys are great.

Any relation of Larry?...one for the teenagers ;) Was this the first time he'd worked with Robbie Koenig as Koenig seemed taken aback by some of his personal comments about Andy and as a result was less than his ebullient self when great points were played.
