SHANGHAI MASTERS 2012, SEMI-FINAL: Andy Frazzles Federer 6'4, 6'4. Into the Final of Shanghai.

Andy and Roger meet again across the net - and for 18th time in their careers.

Andy has just nudged ahead in the win/loss stakes (9-8) after his stunning success at the Olympics where he beat Roger in a best of 5 sets match to take the Gold Medal. Just 4 weeks earlier Roger had denied Andy his elusive first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon (but he's got one of those now!).

Andy does well here in Shanghai and 2 of his wins over Roger have been at this Stadium.
2008 in the RR stage of the World Tour Finals and 2 years later in the Final of the Shanghai Masters.
2 years on and can Andy do the business again.
He'll have to if he wants to reach the Final and defend his title.

Fedex will no doubt have other ideas ...
The Swiss is probably smarting from the Olympic medal loss because it was the one 'title' missing from his trophy cabinet and his chances of competing for another one are increasingly slim.

Andy has always managed to get under Roger's skin and that was definitely the case when the H2H was at 6'2 in Andy's favour. Breaking the Grand Slam duck must have given Andy a massive confidence boost and he knows that he can beat the Swiss player.

We'll find out on Saturday; the match is scheduled for 20.00 local time which is 13.00 UK.

Andy has not been playing great tennis last week and this week and has a cold. Mind you, as he himself said, he also was not playing out of his skin in the earlier rounds of the USO but found a way to win. I must admit if I'm honest I'm not terribly optimistic about today, purely because of Andy's cold / virus - I think some of the frustration and racket-smashing this week has been because he's been feeling so lousy and also that his sickness has affected his play, which is frustrating. If he's feeling a bit better then it goes without saying that he can win - but based on this week I have to be honest and say in my opinion it would require Fed to play badly... :(

I really, really hope I'm wrong, as Fed is my favourite player for Andy to beat!! ;) If he can dig down and fight past the virus, then he can definitely do it! :)

I am not a management student but I think it is like brand awareness. It could take a couple of years and three or four more GSs for Andy to become as popular as Fed did. And once you are popular, it does not go away with one or two less successful seasons. Don't underestimate the power of some of Roger's advertising campaigns either!
Not saying it should be like that but it is the same logic as why Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi will be contenders for the Balloon d'Or next year once again even if they were to have crappy seasons, and some Hungarian wunderkind playing out of his skin in his national league will not.... brand awareness transferred to individual sports person awareness.

I had a nightmare with firefox so switched to chrome. Chrome automatically imported my bookmarks from firefox.
