A most convincing win, well done! Really pleased for Laura as whilst Venus is not the same force with all her experience she's still be a tough opponent for upcoming players. Obviously Serena is a class above but whilst it is a tough ask to get close let's hope Laura performs as well as she can on the day and is not too overawed.

Not known for my fashion sense, I can report Laura is wearing what she wore in Estoril - is that some designer fashion thing - with the cuts in the side?
C'mon Laura. One sister down one more to go!

Linda
14-05-2013, 19:07
It's a bit strange. It would be much better if the skirt was the same all the way round, rather than with that white bit at the front - makes it look a bit like a maid's uniform.

david1610
14-05-2013, 19:31
Just a minute. Serena stops a point thinking the ball is out. The umpire says it was good. So why do they reply the point? Favouritism to the no. 1!

Jan
14-05-2013, 19:34
yes I didn't understand that - surely it's like getting a hawkeye challenge wrong??

JAMES4578
14-05-2013, 19:39
Very questionable decision but Laura needs to move on as Serena now getting into her stride and dictating. At least an easy hold for 2-4 though. Tough for Laura now at 6-2, 1-0 down and really needs to hold now.

david1610
14-05-2013, 19:57
First set gone 2-6 but manages to hold serve in second 1-1.

david1610
14-05-2013, 20:24
Laura held to 2-2 and had a chance to break for 3-2 but Serena held, broke and held. Laura has done well here and played some good tennis. 2-5
C'mon Laura. Make her serve it out!
Well, another match ending on a DF... lots of UEs from Laura but... good experience and not disgraced.

pabbers
14-05-2013, 20:32
Looked like Serena said something really nice at the net and Laura tried to brush it off nicely with true Brit reserve and self deprecation.

JAMES4578
14-05-2013, 20:37
Whilst not a bad performance Laura will feel she could have done better but will learn from the experience. She certainly had a few moments but didn't have the consistency and the serve was a bit of a weakness again. However, she obviously felt under pressure as Serena got into a groove.

I'm sorry Laura lost but it was a huge ask to beat Williams sisters back to back and especially the younger Ms Williams who is playing some awesome tennis right now. I think/hope it'll have been a massive learning experience and I hope Laura isn't too disheartened by the scoreline because there are many more talented players who've failed to win that many games against Serena!

Maybe indeed following in Andy's footsteps, but not quite in the way you meant Pabbers :)

PS I think that could be very good for her. Reading between the lines she did not respond well to a "sergeant major" type coach and perhaps a gentler Miles, and of course the experience he brings, plus the overlapping of their tennis worlds, might be very good indeed for her. As long as somebody sorts the second serve out at some point!

Glad it was a comfortable win for Laura, well done! obviously the serve has been an issue but don't think 3 doubles a problem if they're not at crucial times. It is Wozniacki next and let's hope Laura performs better than she did in Paris as Caroline still seems vulnerable. Seedings for Wimbledon are announced tomorrow so unfortunately Eastbourne won't affect the rankings they are based on. It is still a commitee for the women's event but they tend to make very few changes.

Yeah, although I thought Women's rankings were done differently so not yearly as in the Men's? Although I could be wrong here, I've never really understood the Women's ranking system and can't get my head around why they don't use the same system as the Men's .

A hard match to watch being a Laura fan, she did pretty well, not loads of DFs, but far too many UEs surprisingly on her forehand, and Kanepi able to deal with alot of her power. Kanepi was just cool as a cucumber even when she was down. something I feel laura needs to learn as a certain Mr Murray is learning right now, compliments of Mr Lendl.
She was handed the last two matches, but we all knew Kanepi wouldn't blink too much - although it did take her about five match points to win.

I was watching the Serena match at the same time, and it was verry noticeable the difference in the amount of movement between the two matches. Laura's done well, but she's still got alot of work to do on that movement. I'm glad she's served well this tourney though. I was worried that the old demons would have got her in that area. Well done Miles!

Onwards for Laura then, I wonder whether she'll play the mixed? I only hope she can take all the positives out of this and do well in her run up to the USO.

Fantastic achievement for Laura at 19. Remember when Nole was called Chokervic???? She's got lots of time and a long way to go in terms of mental maturity - strength in that department will come with experience. Her movement I'm sure will improve. Let's hope Jez Green has some more input there. I'd actually love to see Andy invite her to train with him in Miami - that would provide her with a challenge!

Anyone know whether Miles is going to become a more permanent fixture?

I hope it will become permanent, I think they could do well together. But I guess trial period is best for the minute.

I had court 1 ticket for 2nd Monday and so seen Laura's match and it was disappointing she could't come through here as she definitely seemed the better player for much of the first set but she just seemed to tighten up on the crucial points and Kanepi took advantage. one rather loose game at 5 all in the 2nd virtually decided and though Laura fought bravely in the tight final game ultimately she went down, I would say she got great support from the crowd though. obviously it was still a good run and whilst Laura was gutted hopefully on reflection she will see the positive strides she is making, though obviously still a work in progress.

I would have thought that Miles ticks so many boxes as a coach for Laura. He even has doubles coaching experience and that is something Laura should continue as much as she can.
I think she does not want the hard task master, but rather the quiet inspirer. I nearly wrote the tennis whisperer!
And Miles links to the UK and London, and Andy.

"Of all the teenagers, I think Madison Keys is by far the best,” Gilbert said. “Of the other young ones I like Sloane Stephens and I like the Croatian girl, Donna Vekic. And I like Laura Robson as well. Those four have all got great futures. But when you’re 18, 19 you want to improve all aspects of your game. Nothing you do at 19 you can say you’re set with.”

Laura broke to go 3-2 up in the third and was then 0-40 on her serve. Five points in a row! 4-1.
This match is 2:28 and seems to have been a real fight. Would love a double break!
Somebody was listening! 5-1. Nice boring service game please!
Not to be 5-2. C'mon Laura!
Yeah! Laura won 4-6 7-5 6-2 Two hours and forty minutes.
That victory against Morita is probably as important as some of the GS ones. Not in terms of points, but Morita on paper has had a much better WTA year than Laura in terms of grinding results out. Good win for Laura! She now plays Kvitova. She has earned the chance and more experience!
And, more importantly, points to try and keep that no. 32 ranking (or better) to get that seeding at the US Open!

PS Just seen that Laura is playing doubles with Lisa Raymond again! If she gets through Kops-Jones and Spears (3 seeds) and Hingis and Hantuchova get through their match, she will be playing somebody she probably never though she would be playing against!

Sallydaisy

Really glad to hear that, I've been trying to find out what's been going on with her to no avail. I think Miles was good for her at Wimby, let's see how it goes on. I heard some of her DFs were back though :-( which we attributed to him helping her with at Wimby.

She has broken her opponent twice though, and perhaps the most important thing today was not to be completely railroaded.

david1610
05-08-2013, 23:57
Yes, poor Laura. Went to her site but there is no news how serious it is. She had a lot of "growth injuries" in the past and it had seemed she was through all that.

On a difference note, I had felt a bit mean to Laura about being happy she lost to Sloane Stephens in the AO and also was happy in a way she did not get beyond the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

This (badly written) article is why I had felt that .... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1717642-ranking-the-10-most-overrated-players-in-tennis/page/3
it is called Ranking the 10 Most Overrated Players (US player heavy btw). Sloane Stephens is number 9!!!!

How dare they call a young developing player overrated! They are not celebrating her early success, but criticising her for not doing it consistently. She is a work in progress and this shows the spotlight Laura would have been under if she had done something sensational at the AO or Wimbledon this year.

I would rather Laura progress as she has been doing, come to everybody's attention, but do it "a round at a time" and when she has made the necessary progress, then get to the QFs, SFs Finals etc and have the consistent tennis to back it up. Otherwise she falls victim to this.

Well done Laura. I think they said Andy had said the Garcia girl could be a future #1 - can't see it myself.......

Here is an article from the New York Times that mentions that.. http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/29/early-match-between-teens-provides-glimpse-of-future/

I thought the regularity of Garcia's rallying and her ability to create angles set her apart from most other players. She has to learn to control her nerves deep in a set. First time I had seen her and I was worried for large parts of the match. Laura needed to be very mature to come through that.
