View Full Version : World Tour Finals: RR1 - Andy gives Tomas the Berd 3'6, 6'3, 6'4

The final showdown ......
Andy faces Tomas Berdych in his first Round Robin match and opens the singles on Monday afternoon not before 2pm UK time.
I'd do a H2H but the ATP site is screwed up today (good timing!).
Sallydaisy

Right, back-tracked to the USO where Andy beat Tomas in the Semi's
So, that made their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=BA47) 3-4 with Tomas leading.
However, on hard courts it's 3-2 to Andy and on the biggest stage of all he got the win!

Everything's crossed for him - I so want him to do well here... <zen>

Sorry can't agree with that Andy had the same conditions, and as we all saw Rafa beat Andy in Indian wells I think it was there in very windy conditions, so Andy can be effected by windy conditions the same as the rest, except for Rafa!

Aaah yes! Because it was that type of wind that only blew on Berdych's side of the court.

Well you would think so, to read what some of them say. I primarily want Andy to win for his own sake as I said, but it would still be nice to be able to metaphorically thumb my nose at them! (Yes, I know I should know better at my age)

Nice way to start my week at the O2, hope Andy is raring to go.
I'm usually out on Monday afternoons, helping at our church mums and toddlers group.... but the good news is we don't have it tomorrow!!!!!!!!
Wishing Andy all the best of luck in the coming week:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:: )
I think Andy does well in first round matches, it's when it goes deep that he gets tired. I think he will win this one and the Tsonga one too but it will be 50/50 with Nole.
Good luck Andy and go for broke as it's the last one and you can rest later. PLEASE TAKE UR FIRST MATCH POINT IF OCCASIONS ARISE.

I have a day off work tomorrow  can't wait for this tournament to begin!
Andy will step up to the plate this week for sure and we're going to see Olympic/US Andy again.
I'm free on Tuesday so was hoping I could watch Andy. Ah well, hope he's on the Wednesday night session.
Going to be a tough match for Andy but having beat Berdych at the US Open should help him.

All the best for Andy tomorrow, I'm sure he will do us proud!

It going to be one of those matches is it?
david1610
05-11-2012, 14:44
Unfortunately, Berdych is a confidence player and was quite tentative at the beginning of his service games. Now he is ahead he might go up another level.... C'mon Andy. Make him serve it out.
Andy hasn't got his head together.....yet. Hope he hasn't got those recent three matches on his mind, eek

05-11-2012, 14:57
No, I'm not enjoying it, first set berdych
david1610
05-11-2012, 14:59
Although you can argue Berdych defended his serve well, the story of that set was very clearly told on the BPs
Birdy 1/2
Andy 0/7
As a minimum, Andy needs a set in this match in case it goes to set countback to get into the SFs.
And simply needs to take the BPs, especially the ones where he gets a chance in the rally!
C'mon Andy!
RoastLamb
05-11-2012, 14:59
Sheesh! All those bp chances.
No, Berdy seems to have lost that "flakiness" that used to be a part of his psyche. So strong on the break points.........and Andy was not!
Murray's putting so much pressure on Berdych's serve, he must break at some point! Really got to take those chances Andy!
david1610
05-11-2012, 15:04
He hasn't got his touch yet either today. Has to find it soon... officially worried ....

In the first half of the games, yes. Not the second half - the important half!
But yes, something should give at some point.
C'mon Andy!

david1610
05-11-2012, 15:13
The second half of that game was some of Andy's best rallying and shot selection so far - had to be, to make up for the lack of first serves.
Now if he can just take advantage of any opportunites...
C'mon Andy!
Hello..... a familiar face there! :)

david1610
05-11-2012, 15:20

Next service game is absolutely crucial.

david1610
05-11-2012, 15:23
Well held! Currently on 47% first serves so if that could improve.....
Double break? Bit greedy but would calm us all down!
C'mon Andy!
Is it just that television doesn't pick up the noise but that crowd would not sound out of place at Queens. Very disappointing.
Mandiemoo
05-11-2012, 15:27
Well, I'm not laid out yet but I have stopped covering my eyes so a bit of an improvement.
4-2 to Muzz, Muzz to serve second set
Mandiemoo
05-11-2012, 15:30

david1610
05-11-2012, 15:44
first serve percentage: First set 50 second set: 63%ยด
BPs first 0/7 second 1/4
The story so far methinks,
Now if Andy can keep on serving that extra 10% and take his break points..... c'mon Andy!
Mandiemoo
05-11-2012, 15:47
Gotta keep it away from Berdy halfway up in the middle of the court, he always wins the point from there
david1610

Looking good Andy.
The atmosphere 2 weeks ago in Istanbul for the WTA Championships was fantastic and not a Turkish player in the draw. Time to move the ATP tour finals elsewhere.
Things are looking good, with the break in the third set, but what the heck happened in the first?? Andy mistakes or Berdy play well too good, or both?

Murray didnt take his BP's - he had 5 & didnt convert any. Berdych grasped all chances with both hands. Pretty similar in terms of quality.

A bit of both I think. I took Andy a while to get into the match.

Had to work for it but he got through that opening match. I've had various appointments and only saw the last 5 games but he seemed to be focussed on getting the job done.
I presume that Berdy came out firing on all 6 and it took a while for Andy to get into the match. No matches are going to be easy at this event that's for sure (well, except perhaps against Tipsy!) so I'm glad he toughed this one out.
Have to remember though that all the games can count if there are ties so I hope he can win his next in 2 easier sets!!!

I felt a little nervous watching him in the first set, perhaps he was just a little nervous too.
He got the job done though, and he'll be immensely satisfied with that win.
Yes!!! Good news after work!!! Congratulation Andy!! Not easy against Berdych...
Speculation on twitter that the lacklustre crowd was due to the fact they were mainly Federer fans who assumed he would be opening the championships and that Andy's fans are all going tonight thinking he'd be playing then for television. Apparently the loudest cheer of the afternoon was for Federer when the 8 finalists were shown on the screens. It will be interesting to hear the views from those who were there but general opinion from the journalists on twitter is disappointing considering Andy's achievements.
always feel disconnected when i cant watch the matches but good win for andy
hopefully the match will be on the bbc iplayer

Watched from tier 1,amazing to see Andy! Shouted my best but didn't hear a peep from people around me! I would admit there wasn't a whole lot to get your teeth stuck into it was very stop start and patchy play from both, but I did really want someone to start a chant! I asked a group of kids next to me to start one but they wouldn't lol. But to confirm fed on the big screen did not get loudest cheer lol, that was on andys entrance and win!

05-11-2012, 19:16
Well done Andy!
oh BTW andys win today sees him pass Kafelnikov into 7th all time career earnings, outside chance he could catch BB by end of the week
Just got home and caught up with what you all thought! The crowd sounded pretty loud where I was - certainly no comparison to Queen's!
However it was restricted to shouts of "Come on, Andy!" - or, from a lady quite near me "Come on, Muzzah!" The couple next to me couldn't work out what she was saying! ;) Patmoren did try to get a "Let's go, Andy, Let's go!" going at one point but didn't get enough help.
However, the music was pretty loud and at change of ends etc you couldn't even hear yourself shout so no point trying! The cheer for Fed at the beginning was noticeable but no more than that and certainly nothing like the one for Andy's entrance (although that was competing with the music).
It was great to finally meet Zainab (Xenon21) afterwards, as well as patmoren, Chris (Lankster) and others. Xenon had great fun training with the ballkids in the Fanzone!!

Must say I had to have a brandy to fortify me when he was missing those break points - phew ! But a good and resolute win in the end. Andy always seems to do best when he's up against tough opposition...and his group it tough.
But then, there is no-one in the other group who he cannot beat so - providing he qualifies - he could well be .....- couldn't he ?
Did the crowd give him the welcome and applause he deserved ? - I missed the start
Maza1987

no longer has a career losing record vs berdy now.
well done muzz
Was a very nervy match especially the 1st set but I knew Andy would pull it back!
There were loads of shouts of come on Andy! Patmoren as well as me and a few others in my area did at times try the chanting of let's go andy, let's go! The atmosphere did pick up.
And seconded that Federer definitely didn't get the loudest cheer of the night. Andy did on arrival, his announcement, in the leadup to the win where i think before he served for the match, the crowd had to be told to quieten down. And then loads of cheers for the win and for repeating the fact that he was the olympic and USO champion :)
Music was a problem in that even when we wanted to chant we only had a few seconds inbetween when the music stopped and the serving started
Am still aching after the ballkiding ;)

Well done Andy! One down 2 more wins until the semis :)
Managed to avoid the result and watched last night when I got home from work. Was definately a bit nervous, especially as it was Berdy but well done Muzz!
Crowd did sound very quiet at times but quite loud at others so well done those of you who were there. My turn tomorrow - can't wait!!
Really busy at the moment, so only just had time to get on here - saw some of the match on the tv and recorded the rest, which I managed to watch in the evening. So pleased Andy managed to turn that one around!
Well done to those who are there cheering for him!! Keep it up

I was one of the lacklustre crowd.....thanks for that comment by the way!
It wasn't the easiest of matches to get involved in - very tense at times due to Andy's inability to take his break point chances but Andy was greeted with the loudest cheer of the afternoon on entry and during the interview with Petch on court.
The O2 is also quite a large arena and it is difficult to fill that with sound......

It wasn't the easiest of matches to get involved in - very tense at times due to Andy's inability to take his break point chances but Andy was greeted with the loudest cheer of the afternoon on entry and during the interview with Petch on court.
The O2 is also quite a large arena and it is difficult to fill that with sound......just watched the match and lacklustre seemed a bit generous, they wernt total zombies like queens but wasnt exactly an feverish home coming either, out of interest how would you describe them ?

Weird comment and as part of the "lacklustre" crowd I would disagree as Andy got huge cheers! Yes it was different from olympics where every point was cheered especially at the end. But the crowd here picked up in the second and third sets and parts of the crowd did try and get chants set up too. And huge cheers when he came out and towards the end and end too. I have seen Wimbledon matches which have struggled to get started because of the tense start to match too
Hey guys, I was present at this match! First of all I want to say how much it inspired me - I've been having a really rough time lately but seeing Andy come back against all adversity to win really inspired me that I can turn my own problems around. I know that sounds daft, but as I've always said, Andy's tennis career has always lit up some of my darkest moments of the last few years and that's definitely been true this week! :)
As to the atmosphere, I think the way I'd describe it was "tense" - the crowd sensed how closely matched Andy and Berdych were, and the overwhelming feeling I felt in the arena was tension. Andy was never really winning until the final set and even then you always felt like Berdych was waiting to come back and seize the momentum back right at the end.
Andy got huge roars of support at key points (such as when he served for the match) and whilst there were some quite vocal Berdych supporters with overseas accents, overall I would say that the crowd was very much behind Andy. :)
Xenon, I saw you on the screens, somehow they seem to pick you up every year!! :D
Take care... :)

It was a tense atmosphere and that made it difficult......it was very obvious that the match would be decided on a few points especially once Andy let 7 bps pass by in the first set. But the crowd was generally behind Andy and he was cheered loudly on several occasions.....when the mood and music allowed.

I would agree, Andy needs to bring the crowd with him a bit more, the majority were on his side but the brits aren't very vocal without a lead and that wasn't happening a lot of the time. I tried very hard but was often a lone voice.
