Is Novak still playing in Shanghai? I thought I had heard that he had withdrawn.
I had heard that both Fed and Nole had withdrawn.

Monfils is out of Beijing and Shanghai with a right knee problem per this tweet.
Could mess up his chances of making it into the World Tour Finals.
Info L'Equipe : Gaël Monfils forfait pour Pékin et Shanghai (genou droit)
There's rather a lot of top players who are not going to be in Shanghai; doesn't bode well for the players meeting ref the schedule.

Think it's a reasonable draw but of couse it'll depends on his energy after he's got deep 2 weeks in a row and played doubles in Tokyo too. Think he surey will concentrate on the singles here.

You're right - that doesn't look too bad at all., although I hate to tempt fate
He may come in to Shangai pretty tired or well fired up. He seems to be better after a stretch in the early rounds and Tursunov maybe just what he needs.

Restful morning...watching tennis in bed with toast and coffee!;)
Looking forward to seeing Andy on Wednesday. I found it interesting to read that Rafa said that only Nole had played at the same level as Andy did on Sunday against him. Also Andy thanked Nole for setting the standard which had made him work and practise even harder to catch him up.

Instead of Sky you can normally rely on getting a livestream - I always go to www.livescorehunter.com to find one, it comes up with various links to streams - why not give it a go?
Madeline
10-10-2011, 21:54
Or pay for tennistv.com. They show lots of matches on livestream, all the Masters, and several 500s and a few 250s. The stream is good, better quality than many of the free ones. Cheaper than Sky too!

Shall be a cold day in he*l when I saddle up the cash for Sky Sports.
Even taking away my beloved F1 won't make me line their pockets.
:)
One of the prices of staying in a lovely rural location like mine is that the hills deny us a good terrestrial signal (ie none) and our broadband is seldom fast enough for even a basic livestream. Sky is hardly a luxury living here. Admitedly the Sports and Movies packages are an indulgence.

Don't know where to put this, but Andy Murray can't play at the Hopman Cup 2012; the field is full now. Hopefully he'll turn up at the Brisbane International instead. At least he'll get ranking points.
Oh, and Thomaz Belluci has just won the first set against Dmitry Tursunov, 7-6.
Thomaz Belluci has a winning record against Murray, 1-0. He beat Andy 6-4, 6-2 in Madrid earlier this year. Opportunity for revenge?
Dmitry Tursunov has a losing record against Murray, 0-5. Andy last met him in Cincinnati in 2008, but I doubt Tursunov has improved enough to right that record, should he face Murray again.
turunov serving for it 6-5 up in 3rd
Sallydaisy
11-10-2011, 08:11
Tursunov wins 6'7, 6'4, 7'5 and will be Andy's R2 opponent in Shanghai.
Lopez beats Tipsy 7-6, 7-6 not a bad match to watch Lopez had to fight back in the second set!
Don't know where to put this, but Andy Murray can't play at the Hopman Cup 2012; the field is full now. Hopefully he'll turn up at the Brisbane International instead. At least he'll get ranking points.
That's interesting - he seemed to really enjoy playing Hopman Cup the last two years - perhaps Laura has other plans. On the other hand, as all tennis players seem to be very superstitious, maybe Andy thinks Hopman Cup = defeated finalist in the Aussie Open!!
JAMES4578
11-10-2011, 09:17
Certainly tough battle then with Tursunov coming through and should well used to the to the conditions after that match, however as long as he's not too jaded Andy should be a class above and has had plenty of match play of course. A bit surprised Andy and Laura won't be at The Hopman Cup but hopefully other plans will work out.
Roddick serving for the first set against Dimitrov...5-4...Dimitrov broke back & are now Roddick 4-3 in the TB, Roddick gets the set 7-6.
Very close second set 4-4, Trovy broke back 5-4,Rodders b/back 5-5, good fight back from Rodders 7-6!!
Have a nice day folks, must dash!

I am also very surprised at this. I am sure it was not a case of the places filling up without the organizers contacting Andy - nobody is going to ignore the chance to get a top four player to their tournament with a partner who has Australian connections. He must indeed be trying something new.
PS http://hopmancup.com/Teams-Schedule/Team-Lists lists the teams that ARE going.

very impressive win for Weekend at Bernies vs Swordfish the 18 year old has such moxi and is so clever about the court, like watching him

Big win for Bernard Tomic over Mardy Fish. Could open the door for Nicolas Almagro & Gilles Simon here in the race to London.

Tomic lost to Mardy recently and I had a feeling he would learn from it as he is not the ballbasher type, despite his height. He regularly plays all sorts of pace on his balls and often slices it. He's got a good tennis IQ, I believe.

Bit fed up I didn't get to see Milos' match. On tv they only the showed centre court matches during the day and then repeated them tonite. App. they livestreamed it live. Which is useless to me as that was 3 a.m. Why they couldn't televise it so I could tape it and watch it during the day escapes me.

Ferrero def [16] Verdasco in 3 sets.
Tsonga took the first set 7'6 v Nishikori. Just about to start the 2nd set.
So, Rafa's match is unlikely to start on time at 11am, maybe 11.30 if JWT wraps it up in 2 sets.
Might push Andy's match a bit later although Rafa should take out GGL in 2.
Others:-
Dolgo d Ramos
Giraldo d Melzer [14]
Ebden d Harrison
Nishikori got the second set 6-4 & it's 3-3 in the third, now 5-4, and Nishikori gets it 6-7,6-4,6-4

Certainly very surprised by Tsonga's exit as I was with Fish yesterday, Kei must have been in form even if he was given some help. Not looking too far ahead for Andy yet, will need to watch his match later. Nadal a break up on Garcia Lopez at 4-1.
That quarter is now completely dead on my Bracket! Good news for us all though!

A dead quarter for me too - although I did have Tomic battering Fish:worship: before going out to Cilic.
I still have Dolly to beat "Fish" before losing to "Tsonga". You know things are bad when you lose a semi-finalist but still climb slightly!

If Tursunov had walked on court and played one game and withdrawn Andy would have got the points but he withdrew before the match so as no games played no points are awarded. Also No points for a bye in the first round.

does Andy not get the points for the walkover??? I never knew that.
Now that seems unfair. Until what round? Imagine that the last match of the year, the WTF final, the no. 2 was playing the no. 1 and if he won would finish the year no. 1. What would happen if the no. 1 pulled out to protect the no. 1 ranking. Surely the tournament and points would be awarded to the no. 2?
Or put another way, imagine all of Andy's opponents withdrew this week. What would happen?
On the ATP site they are saying Andy not before 3.30pm. so is that 6.30am UK:confused:

I thought players got 10 points for a bye. I think points are given for walkovers too - although these matches aren't counted in the win/loss record.

Peter Fleming was saying on Sky that Andy has to win tomorrow to get any points at all - which they felt might put extra pressure on him. No points are awarded for a bye or a walk-over and if Andy loses tomorrow he will lose all 1000 points that he earned from this tournament last year. It would really put back his hopes of passing Fed before the end of the year.
They also mentioned that the match wasn't sceduled to begin before 8.30 a.m.

Maybe they said that but I think they're wrong, hopefully Andy goes to the quarters anyway! Though in he one sense he might benefit from another's day's rest of course but Stan is tough for his first match, he'll want to be in form! However, I'm sure Andy is keen to put the record straight.

I heard Peter Fleming say that as they discussed whether it was fair. Doesn't seem fair to me but that's obviously how the points are worked out. It would be ghastly if Andy lost but I don't think he will.
I agree it doesn't seem fair - it's not Andy's fault that Tursanov pulled out.

I would hate to contradict Peter Fleming who is not only very knowledgable but a very sane commentator but the points on offer at this tournament are set out on the Drawsheet and per below:-
ATP Ranking Points
W: 1000
F: 600
SF: 360
QF: 180
R3- R16: 90
R2 - R32: 45 (Seeds 1-8: 10)

Q: +25
Q14: 14
Q28: 0
There isn't a 0 listed anywhere for a Bye but those that benefit from it i.e. seeds 1-8 only get R64 points if they lose in R2 (R32) i.e. 10.
Andy skipped R1 with a Bye and by reaching R2 he got 10 points.
Had he lost today in R2 that's all he'd have come away with.
He's now reached R3 and if he loses he'll pick up another 80 to make his total 90 for going out in R3.
If he reaches the QF he'll get another 90, if he reaches the SF he gets another 270.
Tursunov reached R2 - he'll get 45 points from this event as he did it by winning R1 rather than receiving a Bye.

I've not read the entire ATP rulebook - but I think the seeds are penalised for their Bye by only getting 10pts (instead of 45) if they go out in R2).
Fleming is widely respected - hope someone sorts it out so he can retract if he's wrong.

It does appear to be very ambiguous. I've just been looking at Andy's points breakdown on the ATP site and it would appear that if he loses to Stan tomorrow he would pick up the round 3 points i.e. 80. I can only assume that perhaps Fleming meant that he wouldn't get the 10 points for round 2 so would go home with 80 instead of 90 - quite honestly I don't think 10 points here or there will make much difference.
What we need is Andy to win tomorrow and go deep into this tournament - not just for the points but for his confidence and his fans' blood pressure!!!!!

I'm not a tennis stat junkie, but even I know players always receive full ranking points even if a player hands them a walkover.
tursunov must have cried off at the last minute, did he hurt his wrist in practice i wonder?
sky showed andy in the stadium watching rafa play, andy wearing his game kit
:grrr:we aught to know better than to listen to stupid commies by now
(Long-time reader of posts here, just trying to stand up for the much-maligned commentators... :) )
I think to an extent everyone is actually correct about the ranking points. As I understand it, Peter Fleming is right to say Andy would receive no points (well, 10 rather than 0, but either way the minimum amount) if he lost to Wawrinka in the next round - winning a match by walkover DOES give you points, BUT in any tournament you play, you can't receive more than the minimum number of points (in this case, 10) unless you actually win a match that takes to the court. If this was the Final and both players had already won 4/5 matches to get there, the winner would still get their 1000 points if the loser withdrew. But because in this situation one of the players hasn't won a match yet, he could still get just 10 points.
(This is the same reason why seeded players with a bye only get the minimum points if they lose their first match, but then the points become the same as usual for the rest of the tournament.)
I'm sure this will now be shown to be wrong, but that's what I believe to be the case...
well let's hope that it's all academic anyway and Andy gets his points for beating Stan!:)
(Would still like to know categorically what the rule is...)
I rushed home to see Andy only to find out Tursunov had withdrawn, what a disappointment. After reading about the points, I'm not concerned about Andy not getting any points as I'm confident he will win. he's had 3 days rest and with his recent form, he won't have just gone lame. BE POSITIVE, I hate all the negative vibes from the forum. sometimes some people are way ahead of themseves. :grrr::grrr::grrr:
