Andy Murray opens the tournament with his match against Janko Tipsarevic.
It'll be played on Thursday 27th December at 5:00pm Abu Dhabi time (13.00hrs UK).
There's been some speculation as to why Federer isn't playing at this event (he's been there for the last 3 years since it's inception). Most think it is because it's organised by IMG who last year lost the management of Federer. There's some comment in this article. (http://www.tennisworldusa.org/Federer-not-invited-for-Mubadala-World-Tennis-Championship-articolo7064.html)
Really looking forward to this. It will be great to see an Andy-Rafa match, even if only an exho. (I seem to recall that the last time they played each other here, they both put almost as much into the match as they would have done in a 'real' match!)

That was the first match I ever taped on my new PVR (at the time) and I still have it. Some breathtaking shots I might add.

It's usually been shown on Sky.
I always enjoy this tournament - nice to see some tennis again after a bit of a break and the field is always good. It will be great to see Rafa again after so long.

Same here and I have the added bonus of the return of Rafa!!! :yahoo:
I'm sure Andy will be glad to have the chance of two matches but does anyone know why Rafa has a bye rather than Andy?
We've said the same thing in a previous year. They don't go by rankings; I think they just accommodate the players with how many matches they want to play. It's only an exho after all.
So I guess it would be sensible for Rafa to take it a bit easy during his come back.

This is going to be such a treat during the Christmas period. Really looking forward to seeing Andy and Rafa.
Yes, I'm really looking forward to seeing Andy and Rafa too. Although I don't expect too much of Rafa - of course the tennis will come back quite quickly, but he's not been able to play tennis or run or anything like that for 6 months - although he's swum, it's not the same - so he'll be seriously out of condition. He won't be able to cope with long rallies or 5 set matches (when it comes to AO). I expect it will take several months to get back to his normal level of fitness - probably just in time for the clay season.

Looking forward to seeing Andy again. The break is short for the players but seems ages to me
Got all excited seeing the OZ Open thread set up and ready to go. Could almost (I did say almost) forego Xmas to get on with 2013 tennis!
I'm back at work on 27th so will have to record it and just hope I can get a look in on the TV to actually watch it!
We have limited broadband (dongle) until we can have our phone line fitted at our new house - would you believe the first date they can do is 9th Jan?!!! So can't watch on line.
Why is Andy seeded below Rafa?
Here is an explanation of why Andy is seeded below Rafa which I have taken from the Mubadala World Tennis FBook page:-
During the time when the players were invited to play the tournament and the draw was made, Nadal was ranked higher than Murray, thus Nadal and Djokovic received the byes. Hope this helps.
It probably suits them both to have it that way anyway.
There are details of a comp to win 2 tickets to this event plus an Andy Tshirt in this thread - http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?558-General-tennis-competitions&p=112535#post112535
ESPN now have the rights to show this tournament in the UK (which is £10 a month extra for existing Sky Sports subscribers). This is the schedule:
27/12: 1-5pm
28/12: 11-3pm
29/12: 9.30-11.30pm (the final isn't being shown live).
I've always enjoyed Sky's coverage in the past - it's disappointing that ESPN have got the rights now.

He is not there because the theme is A. Oh and it is B. Oh and we wanted C. Oh and also D.
I suspect the IMG MD Sproule would if necessary have ended up with "we wanted anybody except those who have twins" ....
Do not think his interview will be given any managerial awards any time soon!
Think it's a great reason. So glad for once that it's something he HASN'T won and the others have.
I assume that Roger will be knackered after his exhausting South American exho tour (including a very unfortunate attempt at a tweener *ouch* I can bring a vid over if wanted) so that is why he wouldn't want to take part in this.
"These guys have more Grand Slam victories ahead of them rather than behind them.” quote from the article explaining why fedX is out. that's a red rag for a bull, and i expect goats react the same way. fireworks may ensue from fedX.

Yes and the real point surely is he did not just give one reason. He kept on giving more and the tone of the article was "we will keep on finding reasons to justify his abscence for as long as is necessary"!
;

I have taken ESPN for just one month. I thought it would cost me much more than £10.00 if I actually went to a tournament so my hubby said just to get it for the month.

I'll be at work for the first few days of this, but thankfully will be able to record the ESPN coverage. I know people must decide on priorities but if you're already paying for Sky I don't think the extra cost for the month is really excessive, particularly if you can't watch it live.
on another note Feds may be handsomely rewarded with the South american exhibitions, but other rivals may be better prepared for the Australian (not that I'm particularly concerned if that turns out to be the case!)
I'm relying on whatever live streams will be available. I have to work on Thursday but will be watching (hopefully) on Friday.

Same here - what else can you get for £10 that can give so much enjoyment over three days?
I've decided to pay the £10 extra too. ESPN are also covering Brisbane from the QFs (not live though) so the £10 isn't too bad value for the two events.
We subscribed to a BT Vision Sky 1 and 2 sports package which throws in ESPN free. I'm a very happy ppy bunny now as up to now there's been nothing on ESPN that I've wanted to watch. :santa dance:
Just been looking at subscribing to ESPN for 1 month - we already have Sky Sports etc so it wants me to do it through Sky and I can't see any way to do it other than to add it permanently to our monthly subscription. Can you remove it after a month and do you have to remember to do that? I'd really rather find some way of setting up a standalone subscription. I'd be bound to forget a cancellation.

Hi pabbers, if you have Sky Sports you can take ESPN for one month. You order it and cancel it at the same time. I 'phoned up and told them I wanted it for one month only and the girl ordered it and cancelled it at the same time. My subscription ends on 22nd January, 2013. I believe you may be able to do it on the internet rather than 'phone. Hope that helps.

According to Livescorehunter, Andy is playing Tipsy at 2pm - but I don't know if that is British time, European time, or local time! I think it is European time, which would make it 1pm here - but don't rely on that. . .
Edit - I have just checked the tournament site which says play starts at 5pm local, which is indeed 1pm here.

I doubt Andy is worried - although there's one or two on twitter for whom it's the end of the world that he's lost today!!! It's an exhibition for goodness sake!
Looks to be a few subtle changes to his game; they'll need to bed in.
I think he plays one more match against another 'loser' but it's not clear on the website.
Serves the organisers right for not seeding Andy who has been ranked above Nadal for almost 4 months, looks like a severe case of pandering. ;) It is a quick turnaround from Christmas day in Dunblane to playing less than 2 days later in Abu Dhabi. He did seem to be going for the flashy winners and them not coming off as frequently as he would have liked but it is in the spirit of an exhibition.
tipsy on song today - recent davis cup success for him?
andy exuberant, service return shots were back at janko almost while he was still serving! but andy too often just too long, or down the line shots fractionally too wide.
Rado were one of the sponsors of this tournament? Is that why he played perhaps?
He had Christmas at home, so he clearly didn't care about this tournament.
He was really trying to rip his shots in the second set, which was cool to watch.
Tipsy was indeed very good. His serves out wide got Andy every time, he could win this thing if he can remain consistent.

27-12-2012, 16:59
No major problem - he was trying a few new things but couldn't quite get his length of court right. Hope he does get another match, but then I spose he would rather get on to Oz and acclimatize.
Good to hear him introduced as ' Olympic Gold medallist and US open Grand Slam champion'
I felt quite a shiver !
I was hoping Andy might be playing Berdy for 5th place ;) but his only other commitment is an exhibition with local UAE players on Saturday.
I too thought he was trying a few things out - probably wants to go away and work on them a bit more.
I was at work today so didn't see it. I was already disappointed about not seeing Rafa tomorrow, and now I'm doubly disappointed 'cos I won't be seeing Andy either!
david1610

Had to miss it...
Pleased if he was trying some things out because this is exactly the place to be doing that.
Not sure if another arranged match to practise more would be good or if flying to Australia asap is the best thing to do.
JAMES4578
27-12-2012, 20:03
Whilst a disappointment it is an exhibition and don't regard it as too significant, we'll just have to wait a bit longer to see Andy again! Agree that this was the right time to be experimental and sure things will click into place. of course you could question the wisdom of playing the event when he didn't have much preparation time in Abu Dhabi but he hasn't had Chrstmas at home for 4 years and the Brisbane event is a bigger priority in fine tuning for the Oz Open.
I was a little bit surprised - I'd been assuming that I would see Andy play tomorrow - because in previous years he seems to have taken this tournament more seriously than a mere exhibition. Though if he was taking the opportunity to try out new things, then that's all to the good.

He's only played here once before though - back in 2009 when he won it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mubadala_World_Tennis_Championship).
Andy's prep before the Oz Open has never been the same over the last few years ...
2006 Adelaide then Auckland (lost in R16 at both to Berdych and Ancic)
2007 Doha (F), lost to Ljubicic
2008 Doha (W) and then 2 matches at Kooyong
2009 he played Abu Dhabi (W) and then Doha (W) only
2010 he went straight to Australia and played Hopman Cup* with Laura (Finalists).
2011 Hopman Cup again with Laura, played and lost all 3 RR matches and didn't make the Final.
2012 He went straight to Brisbane (W) and then played 1 match at Kooyong.
Either way he's played a 'tournament' ahead of Oz +/- some exhibition matches to play his way in both in terms of matchplay and adjusting to the time zone. Although Hopman Cup is a 'team' event it gives Andy a singles and doubles match (all best of 3 sets) each day he plays so in 2010 that was 8 matches and in 2011 it was 6 matches. So he played between 4 and 6 sets per day.
He played Hopman Cup in 2009 and 2010
Ferru & Nole on court now! :)
Nole takes the first set 6-0
I'm just hoping Ferru will get a game at this point! *please*
