Was looking up meanings of names, came across Andy and Murray and decided to investigate for fun:

Novak (newcomer) Djokovic (some say it means 'following after'). Following after Federer, Novak is the new tennis leader. (Serbians, apparently, don't have midde names. Novak doesn't either)

Roger (famous spearman) I suppose that translates to a famous forehand for a tennis player? Federer (was the surname of traders in feathers for quill pens, eiderdowns, etc. that sort of thing) Hence we could say Roger Federer moves softly and is a danger to his enemies. (Roger doesn't have a middle name)
:pillows:

Andy (man, warrior) Barron (baron, young warrior) Murray (sea warrior) this is why you can never count him out. Never gives up, keeps on fighting.
:battle:
Ah, now I understand - Murray being a sea warrior can handle water/rain/wind, but Federer cannot afford to get his feathers wet.

Rafael (God heals; God has healed) - there you go, what are you worried about? Nadal (Christmas/birthday or lucky, depending on where you look) Parera (pear tree) Well, he'll be coming back after Christmas, hopefully healed. Don't know where the pear tree comes into things. Partridge in a pear tree?
:xmas:

As for my name, well, my surname has many meanings. But as my ancestors come from Norfolk I shall go with that meaning - so I'm an odd old princess who is consecrated to God.
I thought I was a bit eccentric!

Out of interest what did you use to find out the meaning of names?

Baby name books and websites, a few websites on the origins of surnames (I just googled the surnames) and got the info that way.

My name is from the Gaelic and means Star of the Sea. Another more mundane explanation is Little Mary but Mary means bitter or rebellious in Hebrew.......I prefer the Irish meaning. In the Gaelic it is also the feminine of Maurice which was my father's name.

Ah, but Star of the Sea is one of the titles of the Virgin Mary so it's still the same meaning really!

Interesting story -J-. These Spanish, were they from the Spanish Armada (of Elizabeth I's reign), do you know?

Star of the Sea, what a picturesque, poetic meaning! I'm put in mind of stormy seas, lighthouses, constellations, guiding lights. No wonder you prefer the Irish meaning.
