Andy among the list of contenders. :)

Andy Murray
Ben Ainslie
Chris Hoy
David Weir
Ellie Simmonds
Jessica Ennis
Mo Farah
Nicola Adams
Rory McIlroy
Sarah Storey
Bradley Wiggins
Katherine Granger

Indpendent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/sports-personality-of-the-year-2012-the-nominees-8352752.html) - Sports Personality of the Year 2012: the nominees

Andy Murray
In any other year victory in the US Open – the first Grand Slam win by a Briton for 76 years – would have made Murray a shoo-in, especially when you add an Olympic gold medal and runner-up at Wimbledon.
SPOTY chances: 4/5

Bradley Wiggins
Has become perhaps Britain’s most admired sportsman. Became the first Briton to win the Tour de France and followed it with Olympic time trial gold. His sport may be reeling from the Armstrong fall-out, but here is a champion to have faith in
SPOTY chances: 5/5

So many sportsmen and women deserve this, this year! I don't think I'll be placing any bets - it could be anybody's!

I think Mo Farah or Bradley Wiggins will win. If Andy had won Wimbly then I think he'd hands down be the winner. However, I hope I'm wrong and Andy gets it. I mean the USO AND Olympic gold. Hard to beat.

I looked at a poll running on the Radio Times website a little while ago. Andy was running 4th behind Jessica, Mo & Bradley.

Earlier in the month, there was media coverage about Andy harming his chances by not attending the show. Such is the way sportspeople are viewed as celebrities these days, the fact that Andy does not want to lose 3/4 days out of his intense training block is portrayed as a negative. If this is the criteria that they are being judged on, I would rather Andy not be placed.

26-11-2012, 21:38
Some peeps were saying Andy was more likely to win it if we won the ATP World Tour Final at the O2.

I wonder if having Chris Hoy on the list will dilute Bradley Wiggins vote, as some peeps tend to go for those doing their favourite sports.

I will get this out of the way now! Such a great year of sport for the UK, the winner deserves to win. If it is not Andy - and I suspect it will be Bradley or just possibly Mo or Jessica - I will not look for negative reasons why Andy lost, but be recognising the sport achievement of the winner.

Yes, this year, I do. There are just too many fantastic stories of achievement to crown one of them as the 'victor' in my opinion .......... and it's not just my opinion - many of the sporting fraternity agree, including Andy.

so who gets the award do we have some mechanism to separate the success from the failure or is the bloke who crashed oot in the 1st rnd of taekwondo to share in the glory along with oor gold medalist, i thaught we had all decided to leave the bad auld days of handing out ribbons for participation behind. sports nothing without competition

That's not what I'm saying. I think Andy deserves the award but that doesn't blind me to the fact that the other 11 nominees - and several others not nominated - might be equally deserving. Besides which I give Andy more creditbility than you do - I'm sure his comments were his and not what '19' dictated - he would have no reason to do that.

I'm with J on this. It's called Sports Personality of the Year and just because it's an Olympic year that's no reason to stop the competitive element. Let's face it as long as I've been watching there are always omissions and people on the list who don't really deserve to win....but that's life in sport according the BBC. I will be voting for Andy as I did last time he was on the list.

Whilst it can be difficult in a year of sporting excellence, still think it's right to have a competitive contest and see where the public affection lies (notwithstanding that of course voting is only on the night for a few hours) Whilst I hope Andy wins and is definitely my first choice realise a few sportsmen and women also have great credentials. At the end of the day don't think this is the be all and end all.

Fina

^^ Not sure about 'public affection.' There's been so much sporting achievement, it's a pity it leads to so much mud-slinging.

I agree Alis, I think to pick out one person from the list of 12 is crazy, and also to leave it to Jo Public to decide we have seen what happens when the public get involved with the voting on these reality shows, I rest my case.
I think if Andy wins another Slam next year he will win in 2013.

karanga
27-11-2012, 09:36
I imagine if 'public affection' is the deciding factor, then I guess Jess, Mo and possibly Kathleen Granger would be the top contenders.

If it's 'real sporting achievement', then it will be hard and perhaps unfair to separate Wiggo, David Weir and Andy. Why can't there be a break with tradition and the top 3 athletes from the voting all be given the joint title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year? :swingin: :swingin: :swingin:

Any one of the 12 would be a banker in any other year I'm sure. Look at what Rory McIlroy has done and yet he isn't featuring in the favourites. According to Clare Balding on BBC Breakfast this morning it would appear the Bradley Wiggins is a given because he is laid-back, has sideburns and is everybody's ort of guy!

I won't be bitter if Andy doesn't win. Tennis isn't a sport that the general population follow. I'd guess someone from athletics like Mo or Jessica is more likely to win. Looking at the list of nominees, they're all deserving IMHO but there can only be one winner.

I'm with Alis all the way - they could have found another way to recognise the outstanding achievements of the year without picking out one. The great British Public cannot be relied upon for a balanced judgement. Fortunately we haven't got a footballer in there to mess things up this year !!!

I shall, of course, vote for Andy - I reckon Andy would have voted for Mo Farah given his comments after his Olympic Gold at Wimbledon

Going back to my post this morning LC that is exactly what I said but I think you put it more succinctly
Re your 2nd paragraph in the Mail today people on the short list for SPOTY were asked who would they pick as their winner and Andy said I quote " It's been an amazing year for British Sport and it's tough to pick a winner I hope it will be a celebration of the year as a whole and of what we, as a nation have achieved"
What lovely words form Andy.

How on earth you choose from so many great sports people is beyond me - yet in other years they almost seem to be struggling to get enough nominees!thats easy you dump out the ones who have achieved the mundane ie jess winning gold is great but not that londg between female heptathlon golds for the uk so she is out, there are only about 5 female boxer in the world so she is gone, sir Chris couldn't even make it into his main event so he has gone( tho he should get the lifetime achievement award, its nice cath won gold but again not a rare success in rowing or for that matter sailing so there gose ben too, same for rory golf is going through a week era at the moment and Brit major winners have been ten a penny lately, you can rule out all the paras as you have to beet far fewer people to win a para gold than you do for a regular Olympic gold
which leaves you three contenders andy mo and Bradley each of whom would be a deserving winner (IMHO of course)

Linda

Someone on the radio this morning said that only Andy and Wiggo had won both an event at home and an event abroad, so it should be between those two. Seems reasonable to me!

I believe him because I don't think Andy's particularly bothered whether he wins SPOTY or not - it most certainly won't be in his list of 'goals' for the season. I'm sure he would be chuffed but it's not something he has any control over so there's little point in being competitive about it.

Yes - having seen Sally's post I went, as usual after work to buy my copy. Just as well I had the heads up from Sally or I'd have bought the front one on the stand which was of Mo. I looked all along that row and found lots of Mo, Jess and a couple of Chris Hoy. Next row......loads of Mo and Jess, a couple of Chris Hoy and a couple of Bradley Wiggins. Getting hot under the collar, I finally found the only one of Andy, second from the back! Now I could surmise he's soooo popular that the ones with him on the cover have sold out, or I could be cynical and say that they've printed fewer and are backing Mo and Jess to win and even, arguably, promoting them by shoving them under the public's nose. But as I said earlier, I'm not bitter.

I was about to pick up the Ellie Simmonds one on top of the pile, then saw it said x of 12 special covers - the first Andy one was about 4 down. I suppose I should have put another Andy one at the top of the pile - product placement! ;)

It's interesting to see who the contenders support - Andy gets Rory's vote, and a runner-up spot from Chris Hoy. However Mo's either the most honest or the most arrogant - take your pick - when he refuses to name anyone, saying "I want to win it myself"!

So much sporting achievement this year indeed but some of the contenders have 'just' won a gold medal. Andy got gold, silver and USO.

I think Wiggo will win despite the fact that in RT he is quoted as saying he couldn't care less about the Olympics .... before it happened that is. I can't imagine any of the other medalists thought that way!!

^ It's great that Andy's winning all these Awards and getting the recognition he deserves for his brilliant year. It's funny that the fact that he isn't present in person has not been a factor - so why should it be of significance when SPOTY is mentioned?

Related to this line of thinking, today's Times has this small article:
Farah may snub BBC
Mo Farah has yet to confirm whether he will attend the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. Farah is second favourite to win the top honour on Sunday week...Farah, who departs soon for his training camp in Oregon, said:"You'll just have to wait and find out if I'm there."

Rusedski puts his 1997 Sports Personality Award, when he beat Tim Henman and Steve Redgrave having reached the US Open tennis final, right beside his on-court feats.

Murray has made the 12-man shortlist for this Sunday’s BBC ceremony for going one better and claiming the US Open title, as well as winning Olympic gold and making the Wimbledon final.

But Rusedski feels it is highly unlikely the world No3 will be lifting the trophy as he is up against a host of other big-name Olympians after a sizzling summer of sport.

I have to say, I'm rooting for Scotland's Andy Murray.

Perhaps a contradiction in terms being named sports "personality" of the year but his US Open win has been the greatest sporting spectacle of the year. There were very few people in the UK who didn't want him to win.

However, it's all down to what happens on the night and hopefully many Murray fans will vote, though not expecting anyone to beat Wiggins. Wiggo is obviously a very strong candidate but the fact that his much spoken about chief desire after winning his medal was to get 'blind drunk' doesn't exactly make him role model material - a bit like Darren Clarke after his Open win who said he was 'drunk for a week'. Don't get me wrong, I've no objection to anyone celebrating their success but this seems to be much vaunted as 'showing personality' whereas Andy's hard work and dedication to his sport is dismissed as 'boring'. There's no justice in this world!

I was right, from the Guardian LiveBlog:
Well, that was a fun night, and I must say the BBC know how to make an awards ceremony fly by. Oscars take note. My own favourite moment was Andy Murray’s brilliantly impassive response when told he’d come third. Was there a delay on the line? Or is he now wholeheartedly embracing his image as a dispassionate Scot? Anyway, like Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins, he thoroughly deserves his place in the top three. Here are all the winners in full:

BBC are reporting the totals as:

Bradley Wiggins 492,094 (30.25%)
Jess Ennis 372,765 (22.92%)
Andy Murray 230,444 (14.17%)
Mo Farah 131,327 (8.07%)
David Weir 114,633 (7.05%)
Ellie Simmonds 102,894 (6.33%)
Chris Hoy 42,961 (2.64%)
Nicola Adams 35,560 (2.19%)
Ben Ainslie 35,373 (2.17%)
Rory McIlroy 29,729 (1.83%)
Kath Grainger 28,626 (1.76%)
Sarah Storey 10,342 (0.64%)

It's worth bearing in mind that Mark Cavendish won in 2011 with 169,152 votes and Andy's vote has gone up to about 12x what it was last year. So I don't think Andy would have any trouble winning if he won a slam in a non-Olympic year.

Steven
17-12-2012, 00:22
It's ridiculous how many people have been tweeting conspiracy theories about a trophy (and presenter) already having been arranged in Miami. They produce masses of those trophies, so how hard do people think it is to get a spare one (and a presenter) on hand for a person the bookies gave a 50:50 chance of being in the top three? Not to mention the fact that they have done the same thing many times in the past for those potentially in the top three who couldn't attend. They probably even had a spare in Perth for Chris Hoy just in case too.

Am torn. Part of me is relieved that Andy came at least in the top 3. But part of me is annoyed that he didn't come 2nd or 1st because I think his achievements were at least better than Jessica Ennis. Well done Andy on a great year and lovely words from Andy on FB

Congratulations Bradley Wiggins on winning, what a truly amazing year for British sport. Congratulations to everyone involved, there were so many deserving cases for the award. It was an honour being part of it all.

Apologies I wasn't there this evening, I am currently working hard out in Miami in my off-season to make sure I give myself the best possible chance to win more slams. Thank you again to anyone that voted for me, here's to a successful 2013!

So proud of Andy and he was definitely my SPOTY. First time I have ever voted in things like this but I di about 12 times lol!

The awarding of the trophy from Lennox (nice touch btw as Andy loves boxing) was hilarious and one of my highlights of the evening! And andy's laugh! :rolling:

Have every faith that when Andy wins Wimbly next year he'll win SPOTY ;)

Agree wholeheartedly Steven. Some of the tweets I read about conspiracies were so silly.
They've always had to prepare for people being overseas when they won e.g. Joe Calzaghe IIRC. They had all the nominees on stand-by (Hoy was in a studio with an earpiece on) last night no matter where they were.
Andy got a load of votes and I'm pleased about that. Take away the Olympic gold medallists from the list and you'd still have Wiggo (Tour de France), Andy (US Open) and Rory (golf major) so I think this year would still have been Wiggo's. Next year - we'll see won't we ...........
:p

I have to say that I think so many were deserving of the top spot. Am delighted Andy was placed. I do think IMHO it's a bit harsh to say Jess Ennis's achievements were less than Andy's. Some of this is like comparing apples with oranges. As some have said, Wiggins was a team thing, so not all on him. In the case of the athletes, like Jess, they put in hard graft for not even a fraction of the financial reward that comes Andy's way (I don't think he'd begrudge her second place) and on top of that it's great for women's sport and women that with all the men who watch sport, she's managed to top others in the list.

I am so pleased for Andy, pity he didn't win, but surely next year??? Saw the video, very funny. Oh dear. Kinda was hoping Andy would be cheeky and give it to the presenter!

Have to say I am delighted with Andy's 3rd place. As much as we all thought in terms of sporting achievement, he should have won, realistically tennis was never going to be top of the country's thoughts in an olympic year. I am sooo happy that Andy is not as disliked as we may think in this country. And to think he beat Mo Farah .... I am gobsmaked that he was not placed TBH.

As for the voting .... we don't have a land line at the mo so I tried constantly on my mobile and could not get through once!! So frustrating and I therefore can't take any credit for the 3rd place.

Really enjoyed the whole show - in tears for much of the time!!

The really great thing about the result is the sheer number of votes compared to last year for Andy.

For years it has felt like being a fan of Andy and supporting him has been a lonely road. I'm sure many of you have experienced the eye rolling when you talk about Andy winning Grand slams, the 'never mind, he did well to get to the final' comments (generally from elderly relatives) or the many comments about him being scottish & anti-England.

The press who have been most unkind at times are supporting him more & more. Heck, Marting Samuels from the Daily Fail wrote a great piece about how Andy deserves to win!

people are beginning to see what we see & have always seen: A dedicated, hard-working, determined, patriotic, talented young man who gives everything in his pursuit of being the best. A true hero.

Well done Andy but felt sorry for Mo and also wished Seb Vettel had won the International Award or something for being the youngest ever F1 driver to win 3 titles in a row after trotting around the globe all year round for 20 races for the last 3 years. see I'm bias as I'm a die hard F1 fan. Your turn will come Andy when u win Wimbie.

Nowis it, Wimbledon attracted 484,805 folk last year paying anything from £10 to hundreds, similarly 263,229 payed to go to theWTFat the O2( ANOTHER 200000 IN THE FANS ZONE), Throw in another couple hundred thousand for Olympic tennis and 50,000 for queens and your not far away from a million people paying a lotta dough to watch tennis, only one fifth of that voted for andy at 15p a time ;)

Well he would have got another vote if I had ever managed to get through! I don't suppose I'm alone in that. I see some people voted several times - I don't know how they managed it. If they were the ones keeping me from getting through, I don't mind as long as they were voting for Andy!

A lot of the wimby and queens would be the same people. And sports fans could well have voted for any other candidate. I'm just glad that Andy was recognised in the top three - yet another step forward for our boy.
You are all right , if he wins wimby he'll probably be knighted let alone win spoty

I think Andy did well to get 3rd place. I eventually managed to get through - my mobile wouldn't connect for some reason, so I borrowed my husband's!!! Once his had worked, of course I had to try mine again - and it worked!....several times!!!

80% of them are probably still sitting at home wondering why Fed didn't get the international award.

Very chuffed with Andy being third when there was so much competition from 11 other fantastic sportspeople. He's finding a place in many more British peoples' hearts and minds and he's still one of the best sporting role-models around. As well as one of the best looking! Well done Andy and I'm so looking forward to next season and you pounding your way through the Slams to that No 1 slot!! :happy new year:

I am really chuffed for andy that he got 3rd place in a list of such great athletes.
Bradley I thought would win it and he did have a fantastic year winning 3 major races being the first brit to do so and the olympic gold. If it had been any other year Andy would have won but I am sure he is pleased to win a trophy showing that he DOES have support.

I think it was great that Andy came third in a year when there were so many deserving athletes, and of course most of the people voting won't particularly be tennis fans. I think people really loved Mo so Andy did especially well to get more votes than he did!

Very happy to see Andy in 3rd place. :bravo: :santa dance:

I thought Bradley would win it but surprised Mo Farah wasn't in the top 3. Great to see David Weir and Ellie Simmonds in 5th and 6th place.
