Doh! Beaten to it! Andy so deserves it! What an amazing year! #murraysyear OBE is a step up from MBE right? Fitting that he got it as proof his achievements were awesome!
Andy Murray, who also won gold at the Games, becomes an OBE. After his men's singles victory at London 2012 the Scot became the first British man in 76 years to win a Grand Slam tournament when he triumphed at the US Open in September.

I already edited the banner too ............ and made it bigger for those who wanted it so.
:p
Congratulations Andy!
It being an award there is always controversy around the corner and it could be asked why Andy didn't receive the CBE (the next highest award) like Mo Farah and Jess Ennis. It's as if his US Open is not being included in the decision. Knighthoods/Dameships have been awarded to those who have won medals at more than one Olympics hence Wiggins, Ainslie etc.

Aaaaah!!! Am I going nuts???
Just reading the BBC report and it gives Andy a CBE!!! Which is right?
Andy Murray was rewarded with a CBE in a year which saw him win Olympic gold and become the first British man to win a grand slam singles title for 76 years when he triumphed in the US Open.

CBE - Commander of the Order of the British Empire
OBE - Officer of the Order of the British Empire

Yep it's deffo OBE - here's the official list. BBC typo I guess.
http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/sites/default/files/resources/NY2013-honours-London-2012.pdf
Just a note - some of those who have CBE's already had an MBE so went to a higher honour than Andy e.g. Jess Ennis.
However, his achievements to me really merited more - NO OTHER ATHLETE GOT GOLD AND SILVER ON THE SAME DAY!!! (or won a major event outside the Olympics in the same year).
Andy is still young and will have many other opportunities to warrant a higher honour whereas the majority of Olympians can only be rewarded every 4 years. Rory McIlroy was awarded an MBE last year for winning the US Open and wins another major this year but no further recognition. Probably if he'd won his first major this year he'd have received the OBE. Royal honours are subjective and it's easy to see why many find them a hollow award.

From Andy's FBook page in........
It is with incredible pride that I have been named in the New Years Honours List to receive an OBE from Her Majesty the Queen for Services to Sport.
2012 has been an amazing year for British sport and I am proud to have been able to play my part.
I reached my first Wimbledon final, competed and won gold at the London 2012 Olympics with Team GB at Wimbledon, and then won my first grand slam title at the US Open.
Being recognised in such a way at the end of such a great season is the finishing touch on 2012.
Thank you all for your support, I hope everyone has a very happy New Year.....and here’s to 2013!

^^ It surprises me that even in Andy's FB entry above, there's no mention of his Silver medal.
I think to win 2 Olympic medals on the same day should be acknowledged as part of Andy's immense achievement in 2012.

Must say I was a bit peeved when I first saw that it was OBE, but, yes, it is his first and I can only think that it is firmly expected that a knighthood is on the cards in the coming years.
Congratulations, Andy  delighted for you
I too thought he merited a CBE but never mind, OBE is great and at least recognition!
Wonderful
I am sure that a higher honour will be bestowed on him in the future, either on winning Wimbledon or when he retires.

Well done Andy :) :) Great news to wake up to! Must say, I agree with others saying he should have got a higher award but when he becomes world no.1, Wimbledon champion and a multi Grand Slam Champion, it would be an outrage if he doesn't get a knighthood!
Well, that caps off a pretty good year. I still think 2013 will be better...

Whilst I expected Andy to have some type of honour it is fabulous to see it confirmed, well done Andy! of whilst we may feel Andy deserves an CBE like some of the other olympians longevity and stage of career are part of the criteria, whilst of the CBE recipients only Mo Farrah had not been honoured before. cohttp://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/sites/default/files/resources/NY2013-honours-London-2012.pdfurse
I'm sure Andy will be upgraded in the future and of course winning another major would give me so much more joy!

I don't know how they do it, but an article I read said that people with lower awards can always be moved up later on. There is a limit to the number of the higher awards they can offer. They did not make Rebecca Addlington a dame after the 2008 olympics as they thought she was not near the end of her career and could win some more medals.
My fingers are crossed for the year if/when Andy can top the achievements of this year and move his award up then...
Congratulations Andy, well deserved, I'm sure there will be more accolades to come in the near future. Get that Wimbie

Yes it is - see ranking order below.

Knight or Dame
CBE - Commander of the Order of the British Empire
OBE - Officer of the Order of the British Empire
MBE - Member of the Order of the British Empire
BEM - British Empire Medal
As someone has already said they quite often award honours with the long-term in mind.
e.g. Ellie Simmonds got an MBE after the 2008 Olympics and was moved up to OBE this time around.
Others have also been upgraded e.g. Sarah Storey who was already an OBE has moved up to become a Dame. The 4 men who became Knights already had a CBE.
Only Mo Farah went straight in with a CBE; the others who got one had MBE's already.
Pleased that Andy gets an OBE, but can't really see how Mo Farah deserved any more - should have either been both OBE or both CBE

Really pleased for Andy, what a way to end this year and begin the next. Just puts the 'tin hat' on it as my Gran would've said! An early new year's present to us all!
Scotsman (http://www.scotsman.com/news/uk/andy-murray-tells-of-pride-at-obe-in-new-year-s-honours-1-2712351) - Andy Murray tells of pride at OBE in New Year’s Honours
Herald (http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/tennis/you-cannot-be-sir-ious.19792901)- You cannot be sir-ious
The Wimbledon final was the fourth Slam showpiece Murray had lost, but he matched coach Ivan Lendl in winning at the fifth time of asking with a five-set victory over Djokovic. Murray revealed after his triumph that his friends had been teasing him about the possibility of a knighthood – something he definitely was not expecting.
The world No 3 said: "My friends have been messaging me about it and I don't really know what to say. I think it should take more than one or two good tournaments to deserve something like that. It would be a bit rash."
ATP (http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2013/01/Features/Murray-OBE-New-Year-Honour.aspx) - Murray Named In New Year Honours List
Is this only me or Jessica Ennis is really overrated?? comparing to Andy, Mo, Bradly and so on...
When you look at the number who got MBE and the number who got OBE, Andy did well to go straight in at OBE. Most of the ones who got CBE already had a lower award.
Thanks very much Sally for explaining it all and for the list.

With all that going for him I think they would make him a saint !!!! To be canonised ie made a Saint one has to be dead. Beatification comes first and a long process follows. Miracles have to be authenticated and proof that the Blessed one has been the cause of these miracles is needed before canonisation. There is also the role of the Devil's Advocate who tries to disprove cures and other claims regarded as miraculous etc in order that the Church makes no errors in elevating someone to Sainthood.;)
Andy actually deserved it..!!

Do we have any idea when Andy will be awarded his OBE ? Cant wait to see it. Presumably HM will have to wait until he comes back to UK for Queens and Wimbledon although I suppose he could come over just before Roland Garros.
If he doesn't make it soon there will be another list of the b irthday honours to get through

The award ceremonies are spaced out through the year and there are around 25 in all.
See this page (http://www.royal.gov.uk/RoyalEventsandCeremonies/Investitures/Overview.aspx)for information.
Buckingham Palace will contact the people concerned with proposed dates and work with them to come up with an option that suits - and the 'suits' will undoubtedly understand Andy's 'working' schedule.
Andy's only likely to be in the UK for a week between Miami and Monte Carlo, although he could zip back to the UK if he doesn't play Barcelona, and then not back until after the French Open. He'll have 4 weeks for Queens/Boodles?/Wimbledon and then usually takes a week or so off to 'recharge'.
I wonder if he'd go to an investiture at Holyrood? There are a number of Scottish citizens to receive honours and there's always an event when the Queen is in residence at Holyrood in the summer (http://www.royal.gov.uk/RoyalEventsandCeremonies/HolyroodWeek/HolyroodWeek.aspx). Last year Holyrood Week was 2-6 July which co-incided with Wimbledon 2nd week!!! Prince Charles also carries out investitures at Holyrood as does Princess Anne.
