This got me thinking and so I have looked through the top 100 and quickly through the 101-200 (just the more well-known players) to come up with the players who have most matches played in their careers. I have just logged those with more than 500.
There are 21.
Federer 1096
Roddick 825 (retired)
Hewitt 785
Davydenko 751
Ferrer 734
Nadal 705
Robredo 692
Youzhny 688
Haas 683
Nieminen 612
Chela 603
Verdasco 591
F. Lopez 586
Stepanek 576
Djokovic 572
Melzer 564
Nalbandian 564
Malisse 536
O. Rochus 507
Fish 506
Andy 502
I must admit it is salutary to note that Federer has played 300 more matches than any other player still playing. Quite an amazing testimony to his fitness regime.

I'm amazed Davydenko hasn't more coz he used to enter a tournament a week. Felt like that anyway. :rolling:

I think it also shows that in terms of physical age Roddick may seem to have retired early, but he also clocked up the matches!

Interesting list David, especially the implications it has for some of those guys to miss Masters events*.
Haas has had an amazing year considering he was out for so long with injury/surgery.
Just shows that the opportunity is there to stay at the top of the game for longer too.
* ATP Rules allow for players with 600 matches to skip a Masters w/o penalty. They can skip another if they're 31 or over on 1/1/13 and another if they've been on the tour 12 number of years. It was all updated recently so I need to double-check the details. You get an exemption for each one of the criteria met AND if you meet all 3 you can skip all the Masters events in a year.
It means a few of those guys (including Rafa) can miss a Masters or two this year!!!
Something that strikes me is that there are 3 on the list who are roughly the same age i.e. Andy and Nole who are 25 and Rafa 26. All the others are in their early/mid 30's except Verdasco at 29. Chela has retired too - he announced it at the end of the season.
Age, Name + current and career high rankings + matches played
34 Stepanek 31/8 - 576, Haas 21/2 - 683 (returned from injury and had a great 2012)
33 Chela 176/15 - 603 (retired 2012)
32 Malisse 63/19 - 536
31 Rochus 90/24 - 507, Fish 27/7 - 506, Davydenko 44/3 - 751, Hewitt 83/1 - 785,
31 Federer 2/1 - 1096, Lopez 40/15 - 586, Nieminen 41/13 - 612, Melzer 29/8 - 564
30 Robredo 114/5 - 692, Ferrer 5/5 - 734, Youzhny 25/8 - 688,
30 Nalbandian 82/3 - 564, Roddick 39/1 - 825(ret 2012),
29 Verdasco 24/7 - 591
28
27
26 Nadal 4/1 - 705
25 Murray 3/2 - 502, Djokovic 1/1 - 572
There's some interesting match statistics on this Wikipedia site!
