View Full Version : BRISBANE 2013, R2: Andy makes it past Aussie Millman: 6'1, 5'7, 6'3

Andy starts his tennis year proper with a R2 match against Australian Qualifier John Millman.
Today the Ozzie recorded his first full ATP tour win, 6'4, 6'1, over Tatsuma Ito.
His reward is to play the world #3, current US Open Champion and an Olympic Gold Medallist.
;)
There's no H2H because they've never played each other before.
So, here's some background on Millman - mostly taken from his ATP profile.
He's 23yrs old and currently ranked 199 with a CH of 179 in October 2010.
He began playing tennis aged 4 because his 4 olders sisters played and he tagged along.
Although he showed much promise as a Junior he opted to complete his schooling to age 18 and only began to seriously try his luck as a tennis pro from 2007. Unfortunately, he injured his shoulder that year so only really began to climb the ranks from 2008 onwards. One of his coaches in 2009 was Felix Mantilla and he travelled alongside fellow Australian Sam Groth for a while.
He's played mostly Challengers and Futures events in Australia and the Far East. A couple of forays last year to try and get into ATP250's didn't come off and the only event he Qualified for in 2012 was this same tournament in Brisbane where he lost in R1 to Santiago Giraldo.
He seems to have notched up several wins in Challengers and Futures in 2010 which resulted in the CH of '179 but 2011 was a dire year during which he exited the first round of most events he entered. Much of that is explained, on his own website (http://www.johnmillman.com/), by another, more serious, shoulder injury he picked up which prevented him from playing/training much and resulted in being given a protected ranking.
Andy is probably looking forward to getting some match practice ahead of the Australian Open so this match should give him chance to play himself in nicely.
It's understood that the match will be played on Thursday and could well be one of the night matches on Pat Rafter Arena. If that's the case and it's a 19.00 start there it'll be 09.00 here in the UK - not good for those having to return to work. However, given that Hewitt will be playing sometime Thursday the TD might opt to put him on in the evening and Andy during the afternoon ... 14.00 Brisbane is 04.00 UK time.
Good Luck Muzzah for this, and all the other matches to come in 2013.

Yes, Wednesday's OOP is out now and Andy isn't on it, so this match must be Thursday.

It's understood that the match will be played on Thursday and could well be the night match on Pat Rafter Arena. If that's the case and it's a 19.00 start there we'll have to be up at 05.00 over here!!!
You sure about that time, Sally? I'm notoriously bad about calculating time differences, especially for countries ahead of us, but according to the World Clock site 7pm Brisbane seems to be 9am here?
Brisbane is 10 hours ahead of us at present (in our summer it is only 9 hours ahead because they don't do daylight saving in Queensland). 7pm there would indeed be 9am here. (I phoned my brother in Brisbane on Christmas Day at 9.30 am and it was 7.30 pm there.)

You're right Madeline, I calculated it the wrong way round i.e. 7pm here being 5am there!!!
:thanks:
I'll edit my post ... but tbh we don't actually know if it's going to be a night match yet.
The TD could opt to put Hewitt/Istomin's match on as the main event and put Andy/John on earlier in the afternoon session.
Well deffo won't be getting up at silly o'clock to watch a live stream - curses on ESPN! I'm not going to be blackmailed into subscribing we pay enough for Sky Sports as it is! :grrr:

Looking at live scores http://www.protennislive.com/lshd/main.swf?lang=en&ref=www.atpworldtour.com I cannot even see Andy's match for tomorrow on the Schedule. I may be wrong of course but they seem to be playing half of the last 16 matches for both ATP and WTA.
Sally said above that it would be played on Thursday.

That's why we've got him down as playing his R2 match on Thursday rather than tomorrow.
With a combined event they quite often mix up the WTA/ATP halves like this.

I'm peeved that tennistv.com are only showing WTA from Brisbane. As I don't have access to tv coverage I rely on livestreams: if tennistv had been showing Andy's match I could have watched it on catch-up when I got home - but you can't do that with the free livestreams. At least if you can, I don't know how.

You can try livescorehunter who offer a few - this one (http://lsh.streamhunter.eu/static/popups/128025377317980.html)seems to work OK at the mo'.
Or Bet365 for a clear but small picture but you have to lodge a deposit.
Andy toughs out a break in the opening game, holds to love and then Millman holds.
To say the crowd are behind the local lad is a bit of an understatement!
JAMES4578
03-01-2013, 10:57
Well Andy couldn't do much on Millman's 2nd service but good start nonethelesss, come on! Certainly a few classy shots early on,come on!
Sallydaisy
03-01-2013, 11:00
The umpire sounded really surprised to be saying Advantage Millman!
Enjoying this match, Aussie crowds are great. Andy's really up for it too.

Great rally - and a lesson in defence from Andy Murray.

Wow this is some match already - loving it - although would love it better if Mr Millman would remember he's a qualifier ;)
COME ON ANDY!!!
Chance for Andy to get the vital double break.
hfwardhouse
03-01-2013, 11:09
Another kitkat - nice one Andy!
And he does! Somehow I always expect Andy to make mincemeat of qualies but I guess the gap isn't as big as I think.
JAMES4578
03-01-2013, 11:11
Proves how significant that hold was as Andy now gets the double break and can hopefully assert his authority. Recovers fro 0-30 for 5-1 lead, come on!

And he does! Somehow I always expect Andy to make mincemeat of qualies but I guess the gap isn't as big as I think.
The trouble with qualifiers, especially at the start of a season, is that they've got competitive matches under their belt and also become used to the courts/playing in the heat (it was 36degrees yesterday in Brizzy). Whereas Andy, and a number of others this week, are playing a R2 match 'cold' so I'm quite pleased to see Andy up and running so quickly tbh.
The Ozzie crowd are treating this as a DC tie!!!
There was just a chat of 'lets go Aussie lets go'.

Good match though.

First set to Andy 6'1.
The Aussie is playing as well as he can but Andy's got far too much in his armoury to be troubled by him for long.
Andy is playing solidly rather than with his A game.
JAMES4578
03-01-2013, 11:17
Andy gets the breadstick and will hopefully keep Millman down! Of course it was a bit closer than the score line would suggest.
score flatters andy, millman keeping much better length than aandy, let down by dfs, but he's playing a decent game

03-01-2013, 11:20

Love hold for Andy to go 2-1 in the 2nd set. Shame about that point in the previous game which was called wrongly, over-ruled by the umpire and then the point replayed 'cos it could be 3-0 already.
Andy robbed of his break by a dodgy line call.
Well he had his fair share of luck in the last set.
Sallydaisy
03-01-2013, 11:40
3-2 after Andy holds despite being taken to *15-40 on his serve.
Millman hitting well and he's getting a read on some of the serves but there was a classic from Andy at *15-40 to win the point and Millman could only look at it whizzing by.
Time for a kitkat Muzzah!
JAMES4578

Uh ooooh and what's with all these shots into the net? Did you see him clutch himself before? Is something hurting and hindering him?
I wondered that - it was about 2 games ago and he seemed to be clutching at an area across ribs.
Maybe a bit of a 'pull'? He often gets 'tweaks' at the start of the season.
Was expecting Andy to break back there
Pretty sloppy this set. One more chance to stop it going to a third.
PHEW!
I definitely don't think he's throwing the ball so high on serve and his movement might be hampered hence the shots into the net.
Sallydaisy
03-01-2013, 11:59

There will always be Murraycoasters throughout his career - I also expected this. I wish it wasn't the case but Andy is Andy and even a GS isn't going to change who he is. He will always be clutching body parts, losing concentration and then at other times be utterly brilliant......

I think it is concentration and motivation. Hey I am a slam winner... I have shots others dream of.... no need to use them until I meet somebody a bit tougher later on in the tourney. ooops I got broken and lost the set and getting angry with myself oops now I am struggling even more.
Versus... what did Ivan say? Show no mercy. 45 minutes concentration playing well will get a 6-2 3-0 lead and then coast home.
The slam was another piece in the jigsaw but being ruthless with this kind of match is still another one...

Andy just got a time violation warning!!!
He was flexing his left shoulder a lot after the point for 30-30 and took his time.
But he's held and is 2-1 in the 3rd set.

Andy really stepped it up in the last few games to secure the win, never in doubt! Certainly a few nervy moments there and some Nervewracking viewing. However, he's through and first matches not always straightforward. Needs to be more consistent but sure he'll go up a few gears.:bravo::bravo:

03-01-2013, 12:53
My thoughts entirely, Jane. Can never make up my mind whether Andy's matches get tough because his opponents are playing out of their skin, or because he's allowing them to play that way. A bit of both, I guess.
andy hit 7 aces, millman 2; andy 3 dfs, millman 5. total points won 96/84
It's all about getting the W and remember he took 3 sets to win his first 2 matches in Brisbane last year. Andy seemed to tire quickly in the 2nd set, maybe still suffering from some jet-lag. Hopefully there isn't a problem looming with his left arm.
It's a pity there wasn't an "Australian" stream with their commentary.

2nd set best forgotten - I thought if he hits the net again I'll scream but I just left for a few games to calm down instead!
Millman didn't play well and whatever Andy's been working on didn't seem to BE working well today although he served some briliant aces.
Still he got the win as others have said so onward we go

I wasn't expecting an easy match (just as well!), despite Millman's ranking, as youngsters are often under-ranked until they get going - so few points are available in the early rounds of tournaments. Plus the Brisbane lad had 4 matches under his belt, and Andy hadn't played for a couple of months so he was bound to be ring-rusty.
I see Dimitrov toppled Raonic too.
Edit - Hmmm - Millman isn't as young as I thought, he's 23. Still, maybe a late bloomer.

Good first set, went walkabout in the second , pulled it together in the middle of the third and served out to love. Usual Murray coaster.
couldnt get livetream working....but a bit late now! I take it he won?????

Ah! I enjoyed watching a match on telly instead of livescores! It was a pretty good match too, although the net seemed to be fighting for Australia in the second set. No matter, Andy's through, and I'm interested to see how Millman turns out. In Andy's on court interview he talked about Millman - evidently had done some decent research, and showed respect for his opponent, which will keep the Aussie crowd happy. Bit of a Murraycoaster, so I was relieved to see Andy getting back into the swing of things in the third set.
IMO, it was good that Andy had a difficult first match, I think it lifts his game earlier, and helps him move forward against tougher opponents in the next rounds. Not that Brisbane is exactly full of top players at the moment, but even so...
Congratulations Andy!

I suppose if you are going to go walkabout for a while Australia is the right place to do that! :)
It's all about getting the W and remember he took 3 sets to win his first 2 matches in Brisbane last year. Andy seemed to tire quickly in the 2nd set, maybe still suffering from some jet-lag. Hopefully there isn't a problem looming with his left arm.
Thought it was his midriff............
Missed this match as I will tomorrow (as start work at 7 then and leave home at 6)
Sounds like a murraycoaster to start the year off with! Hopefully next round less of that ;) How did Andy play?
Well done Andy for starting the season with a win!

Yes and then his arm............

I think Millman was lifted a lot by the support he was getting from the "slightly" ;) partisan crowd!!! I thought it was a very entertaining match to watch (most of the time) both players were playing really well and Andy was getting lots of good practice in .... he just needed the extra set to get himself "bedded" in properly .... hopefully we'll have a routine match tomorrow!
Been out all day, but as I got in the car to come home, the first thing I heard on the radio was that Andy won! :phew:

Just got in and delighted with the news.
Somehow it never works easily when Andy has what looks like a walkover in his first match. I much prefer it when his opponent is a tough one - it makes Andy focus. However, from your comments I gather he had to focus and did so when it mattered.
The next one wont be easy if the guy beat Hewitt - unless Lleyton was having a bad day
Yeah, I think the crowd lifts the Ozzy well because Novak had no such luck against Tomic yesterday @ the Hopman in Perth, at least Andy found a way. good luck for 2moro Andy.
