A few people had been wondering why Ross Hutchins wasn't with Colin Fleming this week.
Well now we know ...
Ross Hutchins @RoscoHutchins (https://twitter.com/RoscoHutchins) Happy New Year to all!Unfortunately I will be away from tennis for a while as I was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma..
I am doing well, very positive with excellent medical support, friends and family around me. Looking forward to being back on the court soon!
In his acceptance speech after winning the Brisbane International 2013, Andy Murray had ended with the following words:- “I’d like to dedicate this victory to one of my best friends. He’s back home watching. You’re going to get through it.”
The message to Ross is at the end 02:26 if you wish to watch the presentation/speech:
http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/sport/v...nre=19;sport=5 (http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/sport/video_audio/186987.html?genre=19;sport=5)
All he would say in his presser was that it was for a 'a very sick friend'.
Some of us guessed it might be Ross Hutchins with whom Andy has a great friendship.
A few hours later came a press release from the LTA - copied below - and the tweets from Ross above.
“Over the Christmas period I was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma,” Hutchins said in a statement to the LTA. “This came as a shock but I am ready to move forward with the necessary treatment. I have the best medical support at Royal Marsden and very close family and friends supporting me. I look forward to getting over this hurdle and getting back to the ATP [World] Tour and full steam ahead with my tennis career.”
Ross is well liked by his peers in the tennis world and there have been many many messages of support for him from fans, tennis players and organisations on twitter, tennis forums and other public websites.
Meanwhile the show goes on for Colin Fleming (Ross's regular partner on the doubles tour) who partnered Jamie Murray in Brisbane and is with Bruno Soares in Auckland. The Britpack are all rallying round at this time and that must be some comfort to those for whom this news is such a shock.
We wish Ross all the best for a speedy recovery!

No wonder Andy was upset. All the best to Ross. Just shows no matter how fit etc you are, you never know what's round the corner. Busy counting my blessings and vowing to live every day to the full.

This is the worst news - poor Ross - as Pat says, no wonder Andy was upset - Ross sounds upbeat and I'm sure he can beat this with the medical help available.
Get well very soon Ross..we're all with you xx

So sad to read Ross's tweet telling of his illness. Hope he will be OK. He sounded very positive and that coupled with age and fitness + medical advances should see him restored to full health. Pray he will be all right.

You could well be right Jeannie and I'm sure Jamie was only too glad to partner Colin at the tournament.
It occurs to me that, since we've not had any tweets from Ross since 30/11/12, that he has already been having treatment so might be able to return to play sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed for him anyway.
I hope this won't affect Andy and the others too much at the Australian Open but inspire them all to do well.
I once worked with someone who had recovered from the same illness (and was about the same age) so here's hoping Ross will also make a full recovery with the best treatment and support of friends and family.
Ross - we all wish you well!

Life is the performance, not the dress rehearsal.

Oh dear. So so sad to hear about Ross. Yes it does put everything into context.
Edit: Hopefully this will cheer us all up a little though: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Hodgkins-lymphoma/Pages/Definition.aspx
Treatment and outlook
Hodgkin's lymphoma is a relatively aggressive cancer and can quickly spread through the body. Despite this, it is also one of the most easily treated types of cancer.
Almost all young people with Hodgkin's lymphoma will be fully cured *
*Young = under 35 here

Sorry to hear this about Ross. As some of you know my husband was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Nov 2011 and was given the all clear
last month
It wasn't an easy time but through it now with lots of prayer and good friends! God is good
Andy has such a big soft heart :grouphug:
Sometimes the young and fit take longer to be diagnosed because their very fitness disguises that things are going wrong - happened to a young work colleague of mine a few years ago. Hopefully though, the fact that he is young and fit will mean that he will make a full and fast recovery. All the very best to Ross.

That was so sad to hear about Ross.
I hope he will recover fast.
So sad to hear about Ross' illness and sending him every best wish for a speedy recovery. No wonder Andy was so emotional. And thoughts with Colin Fleming too who must be really feeling the absence of his playing partner and friend. We will miss the Flemchins at Davis Cup in April but the most important thing is for Rosco to concentrate on getting well. thoughts and prayers with him and his family and friends.

Yes, that's very true. He's suddenly without his partner for an unknown period of time and I'm not sure what happens to Ross's ranking. I know in singles they get a protected ranking when out through illness so I hope the same rule extends to doubles.
Meanwhile (and with DC in mind) perhaps Colin could pair with Jonny Marray? JM is trying out a couple of weeks with Andre Sa but no-one knows how that'd pan out.
Sad to hear about Ross and wishing him a complete recovery. He seems such a nice guy. Hopefully the fact he is young & fit will help him fight this.

Protected rankings must be so tricky in doubles because in principle it should be the pairing - but then some players are more peripatetic than others, so must be very difficult to do. Personally think Jamie might be a better short term solution as if Colin and Jonny formed a fabulout pairing it might create a tricky situation when Ross hopefully comes back...
As far as I can remember, and my memory isn't too good these days, Jamie and Colin played together with some success before Colin decided to resume his studies at Stirling Uni. I think that must be about seven or eight years ago - I do remember having a chat with Jamie about it at the time.

Thinking about this more fully, Jonny perhaps needs to go out and find an existing top doubles player and see if he can make it at that level - bit like Jamie did with Max for a while - and Colin stay with Jamie, particuarly if Jamie is no nearer to finding something more permanent. On the personal side, if Andy, Ross and Colin were friends on tour, then Jamie stepping in for Ross might help everybody on the personal level, including Andy.

The issue with the Flembo/JamieM scenario is that of ranking. Bear in mind that Colin and Ross were the 10th ranked pair in the world last year making them 2nd Alts at the WTF. They actually became the Alt pair because the Poles (9th) declined to attend.
Jonny is #17, Colin #27 and Ross #28 so in any combination of pairing they'd get DA's into Masters and 500's which earn them good points and keep the rankings high. JamieM at #75 brings down the combined ranking to around 90/100 if he plays with any of those 3 and means they might not make the cut at 250's let alone the other events. So, that puts a limit on the tournament levels played offering lesser points and so the upper ranked ones could end up losing points if they can't defend them at the right level. Sorry, that isn't worded very well but I'm sure you get my drift.
There's a lot of discussion to be had amongst them all for sure over the coming days.
It must be awful for Colin and Ross because I'm pretty sure they could have picked up where they left off last year and perhaps moved up in the rankings. Both had 'injury' timeouts last year or they'd have deffo made the last 8 in London.
I wish Ross a full and speedy recovery, and I'm certain that all the support and good wishes he has from this forum, and elsewhere in the tennis community, will help him enormously.

They might just need each other to get through the next few months and certainly it is a very tricky personal and professional balance to strike. It will also depend so much on a number of things. It might even be the case that Andy's occaionsl forays into helping Jamie in doubles might involve Colin, or who knows what else. Wish them well though.
So sorry to hear the news about Ross. Hope his treatment goes well and that he makes a full recovery.
Really sad to hear of this, hope the treatment goes well and he makes a quick recovery.

Yes, she had HL from 2011. This is on the ATP website in the article about Ross.
The WTA’s Alisa Kleybanova recently beat the disease, returning to play the Sony Open Tennis (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Tournaments/Miami.aspx) in March 2012 after a 10-month absence from competition. She opted to take the rest of the season off to build up her stamina and intends to make another comeback in 2013.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ross's illness. Wishing him all the best for a full recovery.
As many of you know I work in cancer care and this is one of the highly treatable cancers with an excellent cure rate. Treatment will be tough but he is young and fit so should cope with it better than many.
Ross and Colin's partnership will be sorely missed at DC and we will miss watching them throughout the season. The most important thing is that he gets well and only comes back when he is ready.
According to this article Ross starts Chemo this week http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/sport/headlinesport/10144981._/

“You see Andy with Ross and Colin all the time in the players’ lounges and they’re all good kids, really supportive,” said Castle. “For me, it really doesn’t matter about the tennis career. No one knows if Ross will have the strength to come back next year. But you do know that he will get every support from his friends and family.
“When I was speaking to Ross and Paul and [Hutchins’ brother] Blake on Sunday, there was a great deal of positivity about the place. The family is very calm and determined to stay that way.
“They found out a couple of weeks ago, so they had to deal with it over the Christmas and New Year period, and they had some tough times privately. But they’re such a friendly bunch, so approachable and united. I’ve actually just looked up the word ‘stoical’, because that’s the sort of bloke Ross is – he’s very calm, very placid. And I know Ross and Paul and everybody has been so moved by the strength of reaction to this news. He really does feel that everybody is right in his corner.”

Extract here:
From the moment Hutchins called his best friend two days after Christmas to tell him he was suffering from the disease, Murray has buried himself in the subject. The greater astonishment for the 27-year-old Hutchins came at the weekend when, in Murray’s speech on court after retaining his Brisbane International title, the US Open and Olympic champion began to cry and to dedicate his success to someone he has become exceedingly close to since they were 12 and 14, sparring against each other in junior competition.
“It made me feel so good that he won Brisbane and my first thought as he started his speech was how much he’s improved his speaking over the years because that used to come hard to him.
Hope the chemo will allow him to feel well enough to do some commentary - that, at least, might provide some relief and distraction for him. Although, commentating on the very thing he loves but can't himself enjoy at the moment may be difficult.

The Londoner's condition came to light as he struggled with severe back pain that did not respond to physiotherapy.
"I was having a lot of sleepless nights, lying on the floor throughout my three-week China trip in October," he added.
"Eventually, one physio said that he thought that I needed to rule out a kidney pain, a cancer pain or a tumour pain.
"He said I needed to have some tests because it is not normal to be in this sort of pain for this amount of time."

'Andy has been brilliant. I have known him well since I was about 12 years old and he is one of my best friends, if not my best. He was the first guy I told outside my own family. I said that I didn't want to ruin his preparations for Australia but that I wanted to let him know because I want him with me.
......
He was especially gratified by the words of Davis Cup colleague Fleming, who is now playing with Jamie Murray in Australia.
'He told me that the partnership will always be open for me and that when I am back we will take on the world together.
'My specialist tells me that I have had this for 12-18 months, and we were joking that it might have been responsible for a few tiebreak losses we shouldn't have had. Getting back on to court is all the incentive and inspiration I need.'
Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/ross-hutchins-andy-murrays-been-so-supportive-8445099.html) - Ross Hutchins: Andy Murray's been so supportive
"After I announced it on Twitter, there must have been more than 1,000 messages," Hutchins said. "I read every single one, from people who are currently going through Hodgkin's lymphoma, people who are going through cancer, people who've had it and come through, strong people who are in remission, people offering advice. I also got support from a lot of players.
"I can't get my head around the fact that all these messages are for me and that I'm the one who has this problem. I'm struggling to believe it. I'm very touched. I am overwhelmed."
"I said to Andy: 'I don't know whether to tell you. I don't want to ruin your preparation. I know you've been working hard, but as my best friend, I want you to know something before it gets out because I kind of want you with me on this one.' He's been brilliant. He's sent a gift and is asking every day how I'm feeling. He wants to know every single detail, however bad or good it is, when I get tough news about whether it's spread or not, or when I get good news.
"It makes me feel good he actually won Brisbane because I think it was very upsetting for him to hear my news, as it was for everyone. Not that it would affect him because he's such a professional and is able to switch off and get back into tennis mode. I had no doubt he would. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it to people I didn't think could handle it. He's been absolutely unbelievable and so supportive with me the whole way."

This sort of thinking could easily help inspire Andy. Zara Philips won her world championship title in eventing a few days after one of her best eventing friends had a fatal riding accident.

Thought I'd just share this small quote from the paper copy of The Times - don't think I've come across it in another article:
[Ross talking about Andy] "..now he wants to know every single thing about the illness, so much so that it has become a cause célebre for him.He has done all the research, he sends me internet links about people who have had it and who have come through. In that sense, he is very pernickety. But it is who he is."
An interesting insight into their characters. Here's to a full recovery.
Sounds like us finding articles about Andy!
I missed the extended interview with Hutchins on 5live last night. Does anyone have the link?
Cazza, I think you'll find it here at 56.00 [it was squeezed in right at the very end of the programme - but worth catching] http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01q7j1f/5_live_Sport_5_live_Tennis_Australian_Open_2013_pr eview/

Earlier in the week I think Andy said he wanted to win the AO to give Ross something to smile about.
I'm sure Ross was impressed and happy that Andy was in the final.

Apparently Andy phoned Ross after the match and told him that he was sorry, that he had wanted to win it for him. Awww :(

So glad he feels like eating. My friend didn't for about a week after each chemo session.
My friend felt terrible after each session - apart from feeling sick, she felt really cold and just couldn't get warm, so she snuggled up in bed with the dog and loads of quilts.
Ah, but Ross is young and very fit, which really helps the body's recovery after chemo.

We have a friend who was getting chemo as a preventative after surgery and had to stop as her body couldnt take it at all, she ended up with chest pain which were really scary. she has now been changed to topical radiotherapy. My husband was chilly most of the time but put on a stone in weight! He was alway too sick for the day of chemo and the next day but for those few days all he thought about was what he would eat when he improved. He was also advised to stay away from take away, so he had more than ever! Definitely not a good patient! Didn't do him any harm though, climbed a mountain half way through and Ben Nevis just 7 weeks after his last chemo. His health was very good before so I would hope Ross will bounce back after even faster. :)

Neil Harman interviewed Ross for The Times (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3679212.ece) - Ross Hutchins happy to have Andy Murray on his side in fight against cancer - unfortunately you have to subscribe in order to read it all.

Extracts from The Times article (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3679212.ece) on Ross below. Apparently he got engaged last week to Lindsay Wood, his long-term girlfriend, so that's positive news!
Somehow, Wimbledon and February don’t quite go together. Like Ross Hutchins and cancer. Yet here we are, seated upstairs at the All England Club, a stiff breeze blowing across the lawns and a chillier one ransacking your mind as you try to make sense of the story he tells as matter-of-factly as if we were discussing the unfolding of an Andy Murray rally.
The special bond between Murray and Hutchins was further enriched as they dined together in Wimbledon Village last night, a week after the Australian Open finalist landed from Melbourne and spent that same evening* in the company of his best friend, along with their contemporaries, Colin Fleming, Jonny Marray and Jamie Baker. At some time yesterday, hair will have come up in the conversation because they have long ribbed each other about their respective, ever-so-slight hair loss.
“I think Andy’s going to win the contest in a few months’ time,” Hutchins says, preparing for what will happen as his chemotherapy course intensifies.
“It just means three months more, or tougher drugs, or a more intense programme, but as sportsmen we’ve gone through a lot of body and mental pain and maybe we can handle it better. I tend to persuade myself of that. Maybe it’s bluffing, but . . .”
I find myself marvelling at the man’s honesty, although I have known him since he was 13 and never doubted it for a moment. That was about the time he was developing a kinship with Murray, one that manifested itself when they played doubles.
“He was 16, and the older players like [David] Sherwood and [Andrew] Banks were desperate to beat him to show he wasn’t that good,” Hutchins says. “But he was superb. We lost a match and he was so angry. No time did he blame me but I’ve never seen a greater drive or passion or hatred to lose than the guy next to me on the court. I felt I was competitive, but he was unbelievable. I knew he would be a champion.”
Hutchins admitted he bawled the night Murray won the US Open last September; the same way in which Murray has responded to his friend’s plight in his private moments.
* 29/1/13: On the day Andy arrived back in the UK they all got together at the AELTC Wimbledon for dinner and snooker and the party also included Jamie's Delgado & Murray and others.
Awww congratulations to Ross and Lindsay. I had the pleasure of meeting Lindsay at wimbly one year and she is a lovely and gorgeous girl!
Thanks for the extracts Sally .... brought tears to my eyes! Funny isn't it? I sit here at work where every day I meet people with cancer and often tell them dreadful news. I rarely cry .... yet here I am getting emotional about someone I have never met!! Go figure!

Well done Ross! He's being so positive and that's such a big part of this battle. Hubby was told he would have 3 months of chemo with a scan at the end to see if he needed more. Thanks Fina :) yes it's the pet scan I was thinking about. If he's clear he will know then although as you say they verify it again in October. At my hubby's pet scan last June (his chemo finished in May) they told him he was clear and said the 3 month later was just for his peace of mind. Praying Ross will be exactly the same :grouphug:

Anyone know when Ross gets his results? Did I hear somewhere it's to be the middle of this month?I've been going through exactly the same as Ross this year, I found out I had 'The Hodge' in Sep (the day after Andy's win in NY coincidently) and started my chemo at the beginning of Nov after about 5-6 weeks staging, as far as I am aware Ross began treatment around the New year about 2 months behind me, my chemo finished early april, I had scans in the middle of may and I found out the results in early June (thankfully promising results) so expect Ross to be 2 months behind with everything which means he should find out early August. And then it will be 3 months before he has another ct scan, mine is at the end of August. Fingers crossed Roscoe, if I can do it, you can do it matey.

Hey listen thanks guys, I wasn't fishing for sympathy or anything haha but well wishes always make you smile so cheers folks, personally I believe that Ross will take the same point of view that I took and that is that we are lucky to have gotten Hodgkins Lymphoma as it is 2nd only to Testicular Cancer as far as successful treatment rates are concerned, and as no fella wants to have his nackers chopped off (ouch!!!) I think that if you are gonna get a cancer then the hodge is the one to get. It may seem a bit churlish but it was so annoying during queens when bouncy kept referring to it as non-hodgkins lymphoma, as that is a completely different dissease. Maybe it was a bit of the after effects from the chemo making me so sensitive to it, but I was getting so annoyed at his constant references to the wrong thing, haha I look back now and thing that I was such a melt, but venting at Castle is better than those close to me I suppose haha. For those who are interested, a healthy male has somewhere around a 90% chance of getting through the next ten years without relapse after chemo treatment for Hodgekins Lymphoma, there aren't any figures yet for 15 years or 20 years survival as the regime you are given now hasn't been administered for that long.

Being extra irritable is a common side effect of chemo, I'm quite lucky that I'm quite easy come easy go, so I don't get irritated by much, but even I'm not immune to the ramblings of our favourite former breakfast TV, former British No.1, and current Claim Advert/tennis commy warbler Andrew Castle. If your hubby can find something to be annoyed at and vent in that direction, it may make things a bit easier for you and others close to him. I always admired Roscoe's seemingly brush it off the shoulder attitude to his chemo, but I'm sure he had his tough times off camera, stick in there though millypops, when the chemo is over you begin to feel better within weeks x x

I used to love AC but he irritates me enormously, I am still cross that the BBC allegedly paid out a sum of money to David Lloyd because of his big mouth
