View Full Version : Australian Open qualifying 2013
Both Brits have drawn unseeded clay court specialists, which is about as good as we could have hoped for as far as QR1 is concerned.
QR1: Jamie Baker WR 246 v Julio César Campozano (ECU) WR 222 (= CH)
3rd on Court 14 after 23.00 GMT, so probably about 02.00 GMT
(q19) Matteo Viola ITA & former top 5 player (q9) James Blake (USA) are the seeded players in this section.
QR1: James Ward WR 247 v Boris Pashanski (SRB) WR 172 (CH 55 in 2006, best known here as Chris Eaton's Wimbledon R1 victim in 2008)
5th on Court 15, so probably after 05.00 GMT
(q14) Yuichi Sugita (JPN) & (q18) Denis Kudla (USA) are the seeded players in this section.
Anne & Johanna will find out their draws tomorrow.
Andy, Heather & Laura are of course directly into their respective main draws.

Best of Luck to Wardy and Blakey!
Is anyone else saddened to see the likes of James Blake having to play Qualifying to get into a Grand Slam. He managed quite a comeback after he'd had a lot of illness/injury but has now slipped well down the rankings. You can't help but applaud him for carrying on with the sport he loves but, as a contemporary of Roddick, it's slightly surprising that he too hasn't opted to 'retire'.
Poor James  I've been expecting him to retire for some time now
Schedule for tommorrow here - http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/index.html
James Ward is 5th on Court 15.

Perhaps it is pride. Roddick retired at the top, but not the very top, saying there was no point entering slams if he felt he could not beat the very top. It was a guy who had been at the very top who left at the top. Blake would probably like to do that as well, or at the least retire as a top 20 player.
Jamie won 3 & 5 :-) and since he hasn't played at Melbourne Park since qualifying 5 years ago, he has now won 8 sets in a row in AO qualifying!
The women's draw is now out too:
QR1: (q22) Anne Keothavong WR 142 v Grace Min (USA) WR 178
2nd on Court 5 after 23.00 GMT, so probably around 00.30 GMT
The other seed in Anne's section is (q4) Tatjana Malek (GER) WR 115 (CH 64 in 2009), whom she beat in Ismaning in 2011, having lost to her 5 years earlier.
QR1: Johanna Konta WR 153 v Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) WR 179
1st on Court 14 at 23.00 GMT
Sevastova hit a career high of 36 after reaching R4 of the Australian Open two years ago (with Wickmayer her main scalp) - that was her best run at a slam. The seeds in JoKo's section are (q11) Birnerova and (q24) Bouchard.

Good to read that Andy Murray was in the crowd cheering The Baker Boy on to the win!
:cheer:
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) Jamie Baker wins first rd of qualies 6-3, 7-5. A cooler day which suited and
he played some pretty stylish stuff with Andy M in attendance

He took the first set 6'4 and is serving at 2'3 in the 2nd set

Yes I've often thought he should have retired but if he still loves to play then why not.
Johanna Konta won 6-3 6-7 6-4, but Anne Keothavong lost 5-7 5-7.

Suppose retirement'll come soon enoughand obviously Blake wants to play for as long as possible but still a bit sad to see James in qualifying.
Johanna Konta won 6-3 6-7 6-4, but Anne Keothavong lost 5-7 5-7.
Good for Johanna following Ward's win earlier, pity for Anne though.

Well done Jo!!!
Hope she can make it into the Main Draw. Still 2 tough matches to go though.
Shame for Anne.
BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/20969131)- Australian Open 2013: Konta through but Keothavong out
Oh Annie, what a shame.
Well done JoKo!!!!!!! Good luck in next round!
Blake lost to Young :crying:
Johanna Konta lost 5-7 6-2 6-8.
Jamie Baker won 3-6 6-2 6-4
Something wrong with the livescores. Wardy was up 6-7 6-4 5-2 30-0 and it's gone back to 6-7 6-4 4-2 40-40
On the betting sites the score is showing as the same as the official one - but it's probable that Wardy has already won (unless the previous scores that I was watching were made up!) - possibly worth a punt?
It's now gone through 4-3 and is now at 5-3 so maybe the scoreboard was wrong before?
Wardy now serving at 5-4 according to livescore (which I no longer trust).
And Wardy wins 6-7 6-4 6-4 :cheer:
Two excellent wins for the GB men overnight (both are now on 5 match winning streaks in AO qualifying, since James qualified last year and Jamie qualified the last time he played, in 2008) and a very tight loss for Johanna to a player who has already reached a WTA QF (Shenzhen) this year.
The story so far:
QR1: (q22) Anne Keothavong WR 142 lost to Grace Min (USA) WR 178
QR1: Johanna Konta WR 153 beat Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) WR 179
QR2: Johanna Konta WR 153 lost to Zhou Yi-Miao (CHN) WR 169 by 7-5 2-6 8-6
---
QR1: Jamie Baker WR 246 beat Julio César Campozano (ECU) WR 222 (= CH) by 3 & 5
QR1: James Ward WR 247 beat Boris Pashanski (SRB) WR 172 (CH 55 in 2006) by 4 & 3
QR2: Jamie Baker WR 246 beat (q19) Matteo Viola (ITA) WR 137 (CH 123 in Nov) by 3-6 6-2 6-4
QR2: James Ward WR 247 beat Mischa Zverev (GER) WR 159 (CH 45 in 2009) by 6-7(1) 6-4 6-4
FQR: Jamie Baker WR 246 v Donald Young (USA) WR 189 (CH 38 last Feb) - 2nd on Court 6 after 01.30 GMT
FQR: James Ward WR 247 v Julian Reister (GER) WR 296 (CH 92 in 2011) - 3rd on *streamed* Court 3 after 01.30 GMT (so might start around 5 am UK)
Young upset James Blake today but Jamie upset the Don last year in Eastbourne R1, 1 & 4, avenging a defeat a few years earlier.
James has played Reister once before, losing 2 & 3 at Nußloch Futures in 2009.
well done Jamie and James :cheer::skippy:
a close loss for JoKo - what a pity
Still wondering what on earth was going on with live scores when I was watching them earlier

Congratulations James and Jamie!!!:skippy::skippy:
Jamie Baker def D. Young 6-4, 1-6, 6-3
J.Reister def James Ward 6-3, 7-5
Fantastic win from Jamie - the last few games were on the AO live stream (as was the interview afterwards) and he was really going for it, both aggressive and clever.
It is exactly 5 years to the day (12 Jan 2008) since he beat Daniel Köllerer to qualify the last time he played at Melbourne Park, and apparently that match was even played on the same court. It also means he has won 6 matches in a row in AO qualifying!
A few tweets:
David Law: "Quality celebration from Baker as he seals match point with a Donald Young Forehand long. Baker threw racquet into air. Roared. Great." and "Andy Murray did about 5 TV interviews just now. After every one he asked for a score update on Baker's match."
Piers Newbery: "Star treatment for Jamie Baker, a very happy man... http://lockerz.com/s/276270513" and "Aaargh! Not quick enough with the camera to snap @andy_murray nipping out of the player's tunnel to give JB a huge hug. People screamed."
Judy Murray: "Separated at birth. Jamie Baker and The Cheshire Cat. #ausopen"
Neil Harman: "Jamie Baker qualifies for @AustralianOpen and second biggest smile in the place (and fist pump as we pass in corridor) is Andy Murray's"
Dan Kiernan: "Do not underestimate just what an amazing achievement that is from Jamie Baker to qualify @AustralianOpen .Chuffed for him #example"
Great pic of the winning moment from Ella Ling - http://pic.twitter.com/EBnjmwJs
:thanks: Steven....I was just following that beautiful live scores:faint:
Now placed in the main draw:
L128: (Q) Jamie Baker WR 246 v Lukáš Rosol (CZE) WR 75 (CH 65 in 2011)
Rosol may have upset Rafa at Wimbledon but he also lost 6-0 6-0 6-2 to Petzschner in R1 at the AO a year ago, so this looks like a reasonable draw, though obviously Rosol will be the favourite to win.
Even if he loses in R1, 25 points for qualifying plus 10 main draw Round 1 points will see Jamie rise over 30 places to around WR 210.
Very well done Jamie! :skippy:
Nice to hear Andy's so pleased too!
Fantastic win for Baker! :yahoo:
A fantastic achievement by Jamie Baker, one of the hardest workers out there who has been through the lowest of lows. Hopefully this will help him to achieve some of what might have happened 5 years ago but for his serious illness.
His match from the second game of the final set is now on youtube as part of the entire days qualifying. The video starts at that point. To see the winning final game, jump to 4hrs 41mins and also his post match interview follows shortly after.

What wonderful news!!! Congratulations to Jamie Baker.
He's such a hard worker, as any of us who've watched him play live will know.
So well deserved and he's a lovely bloke.
He's clearly benefitted from accompanying Andy on the winter training camp in Florida.
Both Baker and Oli Golding went along and, from Oli's tweets, they were put through the mill.
I also think the British players are 'bonding' as never before (perhaps as a result of Ross's news); they seem to be drawing together more as a group and giving one another visible and vocal support where they can. I think it's inspiring them, and firing them up, to really go for it here in Oz - there's already 2 titles this year for Andy and Colin (with Bruno Soares) which have been dedicated to Ross's recovery!. Perhaps too there's some residual feelgood factor from the Olympics which must have left every British sports person feeling proud.

From Jamie Baker's presser:
Barry Flatman @Barry_FlatmanST (https://twitter.com/Barry_FlatmanST) Jamie Baker on his very British Melbourne support.
"There was even a guy in a Celtic shirt cheering me on. As I won I can forgive him that."
Did -J- go to the AO? He's definitely MIA.
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) Superb press conference by Jamie Baker. Open, frank, decent, humble, inspirational (the way he's always been)
hope there might be a video of Jamie's presser!
BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/20997242) - Australian Open 2013: Jamie Baker qualifies for main draw
Fantastic news. The best thing to come out of Ross's illness may just be a determination within the Brit camp to do everything they can to raise his spirits and show him support. Sometimes winning for someone else can be more motivational that simply doing it for yourself.
