View Full Version : AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2013, ROUND 1: Andy rolls over Robin 6-3 6-1 6-3

Andy will play Robin Haase in R1 at the 2013 Australian Open.

There were audible groans on twitter and from those of us who remember Haase beating Andy in Rotterdam R1 in 2008 and then taking him to 5 sets at the 2011 USO. For some reason this is not a good match up for Andy. Mostlybecause when Haase is having a good day he is fearsome and makes you scratch your head wondering why he isn't in the top 10.

Haase can play aggressive accurate tennis and can demolish the best in the world and has given the likes of Nadal and Baghdatis (besides Murray) a run for their money over 5 sets. Thankfully, he doesn't do it often enough and that inconsistency is why his ranking is #54 (CH#33, July 2012). Also, Robin was injured and off the tour for nearly a year so, for his age (25, the same as Andy), he's dropped back in terms of playing experience particularly in the Slams and 5-setters.

The Dutchman has beaten Andy once and had a 2 sets lead at their next encounter before Andy came back from the 0-2 deficit to win in 5 sets. H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=H756) is 1-1. It's absolutely vital that Andy comes out firing on all six and gives Haase no quarter; when he's ahead he oozes confidence and keeps thumping the ball for winners.

Muzzah needs to be calm and clinical and get off the court in 3 sets to conserve energy.
We all know that ..... but equally we all know the match might not go to any sort of plan!

You've been warned; sofas at the ready, medicinal alcohol stocked up and plenty of these!

On the other hand we could go for .......
:jitterbug::jitterbug::jitterbug::jitterbug::jitte rbug:

Let's go Andy, Let's go!!!

I was sat in the Ahoy stadium watching the 2009 Rotterdam match between Andy and Robin.
It was awful.
:crying:

To put it in context though ... at the time Haase was deemed to be the next big thing in Dutch tennis and the night before there'd been a hugely emotional ceremony when stalwart Raemon Sluiter retired. So, I think in his first appearance at the Rotterdam event, and fuelled by much local crowd support, Robin just went for broke in much the same way as Rosol did at Wimbledon against Rafa. Andy just wasn't expecting it, I think it was a morning match when he wasn't fully awake and he definitely wasn't on top form.

In a Bio article on 24th June 2010 Haase put this:
Greatest Sports Moment: “I beat Andy Murray in front of the home crowd (Rotterdam).”
:shades:
(Haase took Rafa to 5 sets in R2, Wimb 2010, with Nadal finally winning 7–5, 2–6, 6–3, 0–6, 3–6).

In the USO 5-setter Andy had to battle from behind and win from a 0-2 set deficit because once again Haase had come out in barnstorming mode. However, Muzzah's great experience paid off and as Haase's confidence began to dip his game faltered.

Haase is still having trouble with playing well consistently week in, week out, and he does collapse mentally when playing in some matches. Having returned in April 2010 from serious injury and surgery which took him out of the tour for 10 months, he did well to reach the year end at #45 in 2011.

2012 was poor by his standards with a 19/28 win/loss record and the 2nd half of the year was very bad. After retaining his Kitzbuhel title he then posted a string of losses and in 6 months a 2/9 win/loss record.

Haase must have had some personal woes affecting his play per this extract from his official website:

The year 2012 has been a learning experience particularly in my personal life, both in a negative and positive way ... Explaining what went on in my mind or why I think I lost a match. I will therefore keep trying to tell my story and version of events ... Let’s talk about the 2012 season. Unsurprisingly, I had hoped for more and I expected more of it. Things did not turn out the way I wanted to, so the only thing I can do now, is to try to perform better next year. The answer on how I will achieve this is simple: keep on working hard, be confident and work even harder.

As I've said before - Andy is always better with a tough draw. When he knows concentration is vital he comes out ready for a close encounter and - unless he has a nightmare day - he shouldn't have any problems. :no worries: Oh dear, did I really say that?

Looking ahead I am more concerned about DelPo in the quarters but we'll worry about that this time next week

True that Andy has experienced Robin's lashings but surely he will come ready for it and with coach Ivan L in the box, he will expect Andy to come through come what may. Good Luck Andy. I watched a repeat of last year Semi against Nole on Eurosport yesterday and knowing that Andy lost that match, I was relaxed and enjoyed some of the most amazing shot making from Andy. Now with his confidence and focus, I hope he goes deep in the tournie before facing The Fed.

I'm feeling confident about this match - Haase has hardly won any matches for months while Andy's a much more confident player than he was in 2011. I'll be surprised if Haase is able to take a set this time.

Jan62
13-01-2013, 14:01
Haase has shown in the past that he could trouble Andy. However, Haase has had his difficulties last year and Andy is a completely different player now than their last match. Once Andy gets in to full flow in this match, Haase will not be able to keep up - he might take the odd game but Andy will just be too strong. Feeling confident for a good opening match from Andy, sure he will win in straight sets.

banskogirl
13-01-2013, 15:01
I think Andy will want to get this match done and under his belt. I'm hoping he won't let Haase get comfortable at all. Just a solid win and out of the heat.

Oh dear, a midnight start UK .... which means I have to stay awake rather than grabbing some sleep first then waking up to watch the tennis later, which bizarrely I find easier when I have to work. I get up at 6 so find staying up difficult. I might have a power hour late evening.

Andy will be fine. I have every confidence. He is a different player .... I'll still be a bit nervous until I see he's in to his stride though. Good luck Andy!!!!

Aaaggh. Midnight start - not sure I can stay up for this. Have to get up at 6.30am for work and as I have my appraisal meeting tomorrow morning I suppose I had better look awake and interested when I am there  Will save my energies for later in the tournament, and just have to wake up to hopefully the good news of Muzzah through in straight sets. Really hope he comes out firing on all cylinders - or as much as he needs to - to get the match done as efficiently as possible, conserving energy for subsequent matches and to get out of the heat. Let's go Andy :yahoo:

Aren't the Eurosport times for continental Europe i.e. 1 hr ahead of us. That would make it 01.00 in France/Germany etc and 00.00 in the UK.

Andy is definitely on the OOP for an 11am start on RLA and that is 00.00 (midnight) here.

Laura is 3rd on Ct 3 after a Ladies and then Mens Singles so around 4am UK time live.

Rusedski must mean that they're showing a replay of Andy at 08.00 followed by a replay of Laura. Maybe???

At best you never know if you are getting a continental time for Eurosport or a UK time (or Lisbon time for that matter).

If in any doubt, Google Australian Open or remember www.austalianopen.com click on Schedule Note Time (11:00) change a.m. to p.m. and ADD one hour. Then unless the ao sites messes up, you are not relying on anything else! Add the hour, add the hour David..... determined to get it right this year :)
Laura is third on with a women's singles and men's singles before here. Court starts at 11:00 local so wildy ambitious 3 hours later 2:00 p.m. = 3 a.m. but more probably 4 or 5 am or....

Your Lisbon correspondente signing in......
The winner will face the winner of J Sousa and J Smith in the next round, with Sousa leading 6-4 and 5-1.

To give you a bit of local context, if João Sousa wins it will be
(i) the first time he has ever won a GS match
(ii) the third time a Portuguese male has gone beyond the first round at the AO. The first was Nuno Marques in 1991. The second....
(iii) Last year João Gil got to the third round of the AO. That was the best result ever for a Portuguese player in the AO.

Not counting chickens but a bit of local context :)

Yep, it only took a teensy lack of concentration and *boom* game lost.
Lendl impassive courtside ...
;)

Haase really does have a good forehand can rip some winners so I think it was vital that Andy kept on top of the match throughout. I thought Robin gave up at the end of the 2nd set, looked more hopeful when Andy faltered a bit with a couple of games in the 3rd but tbh didn't really look as though he'd beat Muzzah. Andy regained the breaks of serve pretty quickly after losing them which was good to see.

Ah well, just 1hr and 37mins and 3 straight sets to win R1; it's a decent start really.

That is a great post Linda. Sums it all up!

When I watch Rafa and Roger and Nole in the early rounds, 99/100 I simply do not expect them to have any problems. The odd game even set, perhaps but, overall, I very rarely start to think of them as being in danger. With Andy and the Murraycoasters, I never had the same certainty. Last night I did. And it wasn't because of what Haase was or was not doing. It was because of what ANDY was doing. He was playing his tennis, controlling the match, shortening rallies (see the Radio Times article where Lendl has told him to use less energy this year in winning points). The discussions of the past about whether Andy should be aggressive now seem a thing of the past - controlling the points seemed a natural part of the game.
To me last night marked a new phase of the career. I just sat back and enjoyed the match without the normal nervousness. Long may this continue!
Then we can limit the nervousness to the closer matches against the other top players, where the margins are much smaller.
Well done Andy. And well done Ivan!

I am happy to call myself a dedicated Andy fan who will always be here to cheer him on.
