Year End Top 8 Predictions for 2013
Can you predict the unpredictable???
Our one-off annual competition is certainly going to tax your little grey cells this year.
Might there be a changing of the guard at the top of the Mens game in 2013? Some of the 'young guns' are bubbling under the top 10 e.g. Raonic, Nishikori and Dolgopolov whilst there are some of the old guard who might find it difficult to retain top 20 status let alone think of ever reaching the top echelons of the rankings. The top 3 or 4 still look to be in unassailable positions but they'll only stay up there if they can defend their points in the rolling rankings system. Where will Rafa end up if he continues to be unable to defend his 4th place?
Who'd have guessed, this time last year, that Mardy Fish would have a heart condition that stopped him playing for most of the year? That Del Potro, after nearly a year out, would end up as #7, that Tommy Haas would end up just outside the top 20 again or that someone a few of us watched at Davis Cup would have risen to #26 and only 36 points behind old hand Mikhail Youzhny.
All you have to do (ho!ho!ho!) is:-
1. Predict the Top 8 players in the order you think they will finish in the ATP rankings as published on Monday 30th December 2013 (before the 2014 season starts).
2. On top of this as a tie breaker you need to predict the total ranking points of the world number 1, world number 25 and our own Andy Murray.
The scoring is as follows:-
* 1 point for each person you correctly guess who ends in the top 8,
* A 2nd point for that player if you have them positioned 1 place away from where they end up (eg you predict Andy as number 2 and he ends up as either number 1 or number 3 then you score 2 points for Andy) - you will also still score 1 point if the player you predicted in 8th spot ended up 9th despite missing out on the 1 point for that player not being in the top 8
* You get the maximum 3 points for each player you predict in the right spot.
The maximum points are 24 for getting all 8 in the top 8 and
getting them all in the correct order. Simples ...
;)
If we end with a tie under this main scoring system then it will be the closest person to the correct total tie-break score. In the unlikely event that the tie-break is also tied then it will be the person predicting closest to Andy's ranking points, then the number 1's ranking points and if this has still not broken the tie break it will be a tied competition.
As an example, the perfect prediction for 2012 would have been:-
1 Djokovic 12920
2 Federer
3 Murray 8000
4 Nadal
5 Ferrer
6 Berdych
7 Del Potro
8 Tsonga
25 Youzhny 1335
which would give your tiebreak total of 22255.
The deadline for entry is start of the first mens singles match of the Australian Open.
Play begins at 11.00 Monday 14th January in Melbourne so for clarity that's 00.01 in the UK.
Last year we tried adding in other stages to post predictions and gain points. However, those running this competition (and the CoC) have been extremely busy and the scoring hasn't been done. So, we've opted to revert back to the original concept and make this a 'one prediction only' competition. There are other comps to be played during the year to keep us on our toes!!!
We'll endeavour to post a final score for the Top8 2012 over this coming weekend.
Good Luck everyone with your predictions for 2013!!
