View Full Version : AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2013, ROUND 2: Andy marches past Sousa 6'2, 6'2, 6'4, into R3
Sallydaisy
15-01-2013, 01:38
Andy's through to R2 after a strong performance against Robin Haase with a 6'3, 6'1, 6'3 scoreline.
He'll next face Joao Sousa, WR100 (CH92, Oct 2012) of Portugal who is aged 23.
(not to be confused, as David Mercer did this morning, with Joao Souza WR131).
This is the first time the Portuguese player has reached the 2nd round of a Grand Slam.
Bet he's well chuffed to be playing Andy!!!
;)
They've never met before so the H2H is 0-0.
During 2012 Sousa played predominantly in claycourt Challenger events and did consistently well enough to raise his ranking into the top 100. He failed to go further than Qualifying in most of the ATP tournaments he entered and on the few occasions he did qualify he lost in R1. The exceptions were during the clay court season when he managed to reach the QF in Estoril (L to Ramos) and the R32 in Barcelona (L to countryman Federico Gil).
The match will be played on Thursday 17th January - time to be confirmed.

If anyone can get the ATP Player H2H to work please could they post a link for me?
Last night, when prepping this thread, I couldn't open the Players H2H service at all.
This morning it opens but when I put in the 2 names it just gives a blank form.
:grrr:
If others have trouble please could they say?
:thanks:

Comments from Sousa on his pending R2 match against Andy from the BBC match report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/21021951):
Joao Sousa on Andy Murray
"Murray is one of the best players in the world. He's won a lot of big tournaments and is a very strong player. And weaknesses? I don't know if he has it, but I'll try to find it. He looks to be in very good shape and probably had a vey good pre-season and feels confident about this match."
H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=SH90)
Andy will be able to get some information from his bro Jamie Baker who beat Sousa 7-6, 6-2 in Tallahassee Challenger qualifying in 2010.
Andy is second on Hisense Area.......(roughly) 1am(UK)....
OOP:- http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/schedule9.html
It will be 2am, won't it? I don't think I'll get up for this one.
Just going to have to tune in to Radio 5 Live tennis breakfast for the news on this one. Can't handle a middle of the night effort this week. Hopefully get to see the next match at the weekend......

The timing will depend a lot on the match between Peng and Kirilenko but allow 90mins for that and Andy would start approx 12.30/13.00 in Oz making it 01.30/02.00 here in the UK. Not a good time for most people.

Definitely not a good time for me, I have to be up fairly early and with my wits gathered together enough to drive (a strange car at that, our own is in for repair). So good luck Andy, make it as quick a win as possible and get out of the heat!
Will go to bed and set the alarm for this one.

Unfortunately for Andy he's been scheduled to play during the hottest part of the day!
It's forecast to reach 39 degrees tomorrow in Melbourne and down on court that'll seem even hotter.
Hopefully all that training in extreme heat in Florida will stand him in good stead.
He's on Hisense which has a 'shade' roof I believe and also I presume the extreme heat policy will kick in allowing players a break between sets?
Surprise surprise and Wodger has the night match! :grrr:
Surprise surprise and Wodger has the night match! :grrr:
On this occasion I'll let the organisers off - Fed V Davydenko is, on paper, more likely to be a close match than Andy's.:cauldron:

Hells bells! Hope the Andy boys have super strong sunscreen. It will take super fans to be out in the sun for this one!
I get up at 6 for work but can't seem to help myself, I HAVE to watch Andy and deal with the tiredness! I'll do what I did for the last match - rely on my inner alarm clock to wake me. It usually works - when I know our boy is playing I just wake up .... sometimes a bit late but as long as I see at least some of the match, I'm happy.
LET'S GO ANDY LET'S GO :skippy::skippy:
I feel ill just thinking about 40 degrees - I wouldn't last 15 minutes just sitting watching, never mind the thought of playing! But, this is why Andy spends a lot of training time in Miami and hopefully his December training camp will show the dividends its going to pay. Another match where our boy just needs to come out, concentrate and get the job done as efficiently as possible.
So this match is at approximately 1:30am Thursday - as in, about 12 hours' time? That's perfect for this night owl! :D I'll be getting in from a gig at about midnight and it takes me hours to cool down (I'm rarely ever in bed before 3:00am because that's what my body clock has become conditioned to!), so this is perfection! :)
However, I get the feeling that the conditions won't be perfection for Andy! He's in a different class to his opponent so hopefully he can get it done in three straight sets and back in the shade!! :)
Take care... :)

Prob be awake for this as sleeping pattern is up the creek at the moment.
I'm sure they will have the roof closed on the court, so Andy won't be dealing with direct sun. I'm sure he will be fine and get the job done quickly.
Perfect timing for me as will just be getting home from work so will be able to watch on the computer to save having to jump between TV channels. Really annoyed at Round 1 as had to record and TV only showed the first set before jumping to other games!!!!!! C'mon Andy :skippy::yahoo:

I'd give anything for 30C at the moment. Andy gets a court move again, why don't thet move Fed! I don't think this one should keep him on court for too long. Depends on whether I get my heating back as to whether I watch or not.

Eurosport really annoys me - can't rely on them so going to bed is not an option :grrr:
Hope you get your heating sorted Pat. Mind you I didn't have mine on on Monday evening - just got a hot water bottle and wrapped myself in a sleeping bag!

Well, as I said the other day, if they even things out in terms of the top three all having to do a shift or two in the hottest part of the day and a court change, I would rather it was against João Sousa than somebody like del Potro!
Great timing for Fiona & I , hope Andy gets this done quickly !!!
I wonder if it gets hotter than expected whether they will bring in their heat policy. I believe the Hisense has aretractable roof though, so play would probably not get delayed for too long if the policy is brought into play.

I think that's a plan for everyone!!!
ESPN Star (http://www.espnstar.com/tennis/news/detail/item920787/Murray-faces-the-unknown-in-Sousa/) - Murray faces the unknown in Sousa
Should Murray care to delve deeper into Sousa's past, he will see the two have more in common than he perhaps realised.
Murray shunned football for tennis - declining an invitation to train at Rangers' School of Excellence aged 15 - while Sousa chose the same path despite a promising career at hometown club Guimaraes.
After spurning the Glasgow giants, Murray left Scotland having become frustrated at a lack of opportunity and suitable training partners and headed for Barcelona. Sousa has spent the last eight years in the Catalonian capital after also deciding the grass was greener elsewhere.
World 100 Sousa said: "It is not easy in Portugal with the (financial) crisis in Europe and also tennis is not very popular.
"When I was 15 it was not easy to find someone to practise with. If you want to improve you have to move so I went to Barcelona.

I can Cope with a midnight match or getting up at 4.30 but this timing is hopeless for me. Make it a quick one, Andy and Will watch it tomorrow hopefully in peace and pleasure. Later rounds will get priority
Good luck Andy - no lapses, no let up, please get the W!!!
Might creep down and peep at the score if I happen to wake up, but otherwise hope to be pleased in the morning!

I will be watching and cheering Andy on as I can sleep tomorrow. Though I keep waking up as I leave the tv on in the bedroom. Managed to catch 2 sets of Heather this morning which really made me wake up. I watch Andy downstairs as prefer the larger screen and don't want to disturb Supergramps with my loud support.
All the very best of luck, Andy:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::)
